Mapping Spatial Variations Of Structure And Function Parameters For Forest Condition Assessment Of The Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve, Lin Chen, Chunying Ren, Bai Zhang, Zongming Wang, Yeqiao Wang
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Forest condition is the baseline information for ecological evaluation and management. The National Forest Inventory of China contains structural parameters, such as canopy closure, stand density and forest age, and functional parameters, such as stand volume and soil fertility. Conventionally forest conditions are assessed through parameters collected from field observations, which could be costly and spatially limited. It is crucial to develop modeling approaches in mapping forest assessment parameters from satellite remote sensing. This study mapped structure and function parameters for forest condition assessment in the Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve (CMNNR). The mapping algorithms, including statistical regression, random forests, …

The Rural Educator
This longitudinal case study explored one rural elementary art teacher’s praxis for two years after she participated in professional development sessions on place-based education (PBE). These sessions focused specifically on PBE within the discipline of art for K-12 art educators in a geographically-large southeastern school district. Through surveys, observations, interviews, and document analysis of curricular materials, the researchers investigated the teacher’s experiences with PBE as she taught art in a rural area of the district. Her curricular decisions transitioned from a focus on art reflecting her personal knowledge base to art that built on students’ expressions of, experiences in, and …
Extended Orientation: The Influence On Academic Achievement Of Transfer Students, Nicholas Gordon
Extended Orientation: The Influence On Academic Achievement Of Transfer Students, Nicholas Gordon
Theses and Dissertations
Students who transfer from a community college to a university need to learn about their new environment in order to succeed academically at their new institution. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of attending an extended orientation on transfer students’ academic achievement. An extended orientation is a program hosted by the 4-year institution to teach new students about the culture, campus, resources, and opportunities offered. This study compared the academic achievement of transfer students who attended an extended orientation and a similar (based on GPA and number hours transferred) group of transfer students who did not …
Rural Multilingual Family Engagement, Maria Coady
Rural Multilingual Family Engagement, Maria Coady
The Rural Educator
Rural teachers and educators are increasingly called upon to build partnerships with families who use languages other than English in the home (US DOE, 2016). This is equally true for rural schools, where the number of multilingual families is small, and the language and cultural backgrounds of students differs from those of school. This article reviews the research on parental involvement and three common models of parental involvement. In this article, I propose a revised conceptual model for teachers and educators for rural multilingual family engagement. This article calls for increasingly refined research that addresses the sociohistorical backgrounds of families …

A Geographical Analysis Of Gentrification And The Changing Foodscape In Seattle 2010-2017, Alice Tiffany, Michele Romolini
Honors Thesis
Anguelovski defines food privilege as “the exclusive access to desirable ‘natural’ and fresh food thanks to one’s economic, cultural, and political power” (Anguelovski 2015a). Previous studies have demonstrated that access to fresh, healthy, affordable food is correlated with socioeconomic status (LA Food Policy Council 2017; Walker et al. 2010; Alkon & Agyeman 2011; Raja et al. 2008). However, as is being increasingly noted, the introduction of environmental amenities, such as farmers markets and community gardens, can have unintended consequences and trigger environmental gentrification (Kern 2015; Pearsall 2010; Eckerd 2011; Curran & Hamilton 2012; Wolch et al. 2014; Alkon & Cadji …
Conceptualizing The Promise Of Life Skills Education For Adolescent Girls In The Global South: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Olivia Casey
Conceptualizing The Promise Of Life Skills Education For Adolescent Girls In The Global South: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Olivia Casey
Master's Theses
In recent years, international development organizations have increasingly championed life skills education as a crucial tool for empowering girls in the global South. However, while life skills education continues to gain momentum and popularity within the international development landscape, the heterogeneity of life skills interventions remains significant. In this study, I aimed to uncover how key global actors differently conceptualize life skills and the promises they are understood to hold for adolescent girls in the global South at the current moment. Utilizing the methodology of critical discourse analysis, I examined key documents on girls’ life skills education published by central …
Visualization And Analysis Of Environmental Data, Sean Macdonald
Visualization And Analysis Of Environmental Data, Sean Macdonald
Publications and Research
The virtual exploration of place has been employed in a variety of learning environments across many disciplines, creatively expanding upon the experience of place. This chapter explores the value of mapping environmental data as a tool that can enhance students’ virtual exploration of place as they investigate local environmental policies and problems within their own urban surroundings. This visualization project engages students in making meaningful connections between the theoretical study of local and global environmental problems and the “observation” and investigation of these data using mapped data. The virtual learning environment is viewed as one that is interactive, exploring how …

Spatiotemporal Mode Analysis Of Urban Dockless Shared Bikes Based On Point Of Interests Clustering, Zhang Fang, Bin Chen, Yanghua Tang, Dong Jian, Chuan Ai, Xiaogang Qiu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The city’s dockless shared bikes have developed rapidly, and its features of convenience, economy and efficiency have been widely welcomed. The digital footprint they generate reveals the movement of people in time and space within the city, which makes it possible to quantify the activities of people in the city using shared bikes. In this paper, based on the collected shared bikes data of Beijing, a clustering method based on the point of interests is proposed to divide the urban space, so as to construct a mobile network of urban shared bikes, and analysis the spatiotemporal mode of bike …

Art-Based Health Education For Homeless And Marginally Housed Women In San Francisco, Trineca R-N Godfrey
Master's Projects and Capstones
San Francisco currently has the highest rate of unsheltered homeless persons in the United States. Between limited resources and stigma many women included in this most vulnerable population are left with little to no support. Cis women as well as trans and non- binary people are at high risk for negative mental health outcomes due to violence (physical and psychological), stigma, lack of social support, societal marginalization, and the lack of healthcare. Lyon-Martin Health Services and the Women’s Community Clinic, in San Francisco’s Mission Neighborhood, caters to this community through its Outreach Department. Following a staff and outreach client needs …

The Museum Of The Infinite Scroll: Assessing The Effectiveness Of Google Arts And Culture As A Virtual Tool For Museum Accessibility, Megan K. Udell
Master's Projects and Capstones
As technology evolves, the concept of the virtual museum continues to come into focus. Google Arts and Culture (formerly the Google Art Project) has been a leading platform in virtual exhibitions and digital collections since 2011. Arts and Culture presents itself as a democratic platform that allows any museum, regardless of size or resources, access to the same new digital technologies. However, its model tends to favor institutions with more staff time to spend on their virtual presence. By analyzing Google Arts and Culture within the context of larger museum trends in virtuality and interviewing museum professionals responsible for their …

The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the effectiveness of a freshman orientation program on second-semester retention, second-year retention, and cumulative GPA for students enrolled in a community college in the Deep South. The problem addressed in this study is a lack of sufficient academic and social support for college students, limiting their ability to remain in school and with high levels of academic performance (Nora & Crisp, 2007). For this study, the following research questions were analyzed: (1) Are there differences in 1st to 2nd semester retention for program completers with a 17-18 ACT as compared to …
Effect Of Frontal Passage On 24-Hour Thermal Variability Of Urban Heat Islands, Mary-Stewart Wachter
Effect Of Frontal Passage On 24-Hour Thermal Variability Of Urban Heat Islands, Mary-Stewart Wachter
Theses and Dissertations
Building materials, lack of vegetation and absence of open spaces in urban areas cause surfaces such as asphalt to become warmer than nearby vegetated surfaces that surround the city, creating the urban heat island (UHI) effect. Little investigation has been done regarding temperature changes across these surfaces before and after frontal passages. This study analyzes the 24-hour temperature difference as a result of a cold front passage by examining the transitional seasons (Spring and Fall) for Dallas, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; and Kansas City, Missouri. This research focused on investigating the pattern of moist and dry tropical air masses preceding a …

Stories We Don’T Tell: Research’S Limited Accounting Of Rural Schools, Michael Thier, Paul Beach
School Leadership Review
To help build capacity among PK-12 school leaders and policymakers whose decisions can impact rural settings, often without full understanding of the nuances most salient to rural places, this study asked (1) To what extent do education researchers account for geographic locale in their reporting? (2) Do highly ranked journals account for geographic locale in their reporting more readily than education research in general? Hybridizing three systematic approaches to literature review—rapid, mapping, and scoping—the study examined a population-level dataset of nearly 109,000 school-focused, peer-reviewed articles in ERIC during a 10-year period and dove deeper into 4,001 articles from highly ranked …
A Framework For Firm-Level Critical Material Supply Management And Mitigation, Gillian A. Griffin
A Framework For Firm-Level Critical Material Supply Management And Mitigation, Gillian A. Griffin
Theses
Organizations of all sizes are vulnerable to critical material supply disruptions. Although there is a significant body of literature that examines how large entities such as nations and governments can assess and mitigate criticality, there is very little work that addresses firm-level criticality in a way that is actionable for businesses. This work uses literature review and case study analysis to understand the impact of critical material supply risk at the firm level, and to determine salient internal indicators. A total of 42 criticality studies were reviewed and the findings were used to develop a framework to assess and monitor …
Implications Of The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem For Wildfire Analyses, Timothy P. Nagle-Mcnaughton, Xi Gong, Jose A. Constantine
Implications Of The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem For Wildfire Analyses, Timothy P. Nagle-Mcnaughton, Xi Gong, Jose A. Constantine
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Wildfires pose a danger to both ecologies and communities. To this end, many large-scale analyses of wildfire patterns and behavior rely on the aggregation of point data to polygons, typically those based on distinct disparate ecological areas. However, the sizes, shapes, andorientations of the polygons to which data are aggregated are not neutral factors in the resulting analysis. The influence of the aggregation polygons on calculated results is known as the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP), which is well-documented in the spatial statistics literature. Despite the documentation of the MAUP, relatively few wildfire studies consider the effects of the MAUP …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: With the development of urbanized transportation, the perceptual computing plays an important role in smart cities. Aiming at the problem that the traditional density clustering algorithm cannot adapt to massive taxi GPS trajectory data and visualization, the BCS-DBSCAN (Big-Data Cluster Center Statistics Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) clustering algorithm is proposed. The algorithm can segment and parallelize the trajectory data, extract the maximum density cluster, and adapt the result to the visualization model. The experimental results show that compared with other popular methods, this method has significant advantages in extracting clustering speed, accuracy and visualization of urban …
Nof Kdumim: Remaking The Ancient Landscape In East Jerusalem’S National Parks, Irus Braverman
Nof Kdumim: Remaking The Ancient Landscape In East Jerusalem’S National Parks, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
This article explores two national parks in East Jerusalem and their legal administration as the focus of contradictory and complementary attempts at preservation, colonization, and normalization. Drawing on in-depth interviews with, and observations of, officials from the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and others, I expose the Judaizing of the landscape in Jerusalem. Nature never stands for itself; it is always an echo of a human presence and, in this case, of a Jewish past and its modern reunion. The project of imagining the natural landscape as one that embodies an ancient past—what Israeli officials have referred to in our …

Design Of Spatial Agent Simulation Platform Based On Webgis, Zheng Zhong, Zhengyang Chang, Yunfeng Fei
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Task simulation is important in planning of national defense facility system. An architecture with a simulation model system and task data management system scheme is proposed to combine geo-processing service of traditional GIS and Agent simulation to overcome the shortness in temporal analysis and task simulation of traditional GIS. Potential benefits include: shareable simulations, rich spatial analysis resources, and high credibility. Based on that, an experimental Spatial-Agent simulation prototype is developed with WebGIS technology. Taking a transportation task as an example, the feasibility of the design is verified.

A 30-Year Climatology Of Meteorological Conditions Associated With Lightning Days In The Western United States, Dmitri Alexander Kalashnikov
A 30-Year Climatology Of Meteorological Conditions Associated With Lightning Days In The Western United States, Dmitri Alexander Kalashnikov
Dissertations and Theses
A 30-year climatology of lightning and associated synoptic meteorological patterns are characterized across the Western United States (WUS), utilizing a comprehensive composite analysis. Results generally show a preferred synoptic meteorological setup with positive 500-hPa geopotential height anomalies to the northeast of the location experiencing a lightning day, and negative sea level pressure anomalies co-located and to the northwest. Variation in preferred anomaly patterns across the western US reflects the divide between those areas affected by the North American monsoon system and areas outside the monsoonal core. Locations in the western Great Basin and northern Rocky Mountains, which are outside the …
