Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Do Not Affect Tree Swallow Stress Levels, Bradley D. Scholten, Abigail R. Olen, Margaret E. Caulfield, Darren S. Proppe Jan 2019

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Do Not Affect Tree Swallow Stress Levels, Bradley D. Scholten, Abigail R. Olen, Margaret E. Caulfield, Darren S. Proppe

Summer Research

  • Movement and anthropogenic noise can cause physiologic stress in animals. Unmanned aerial vehicles, such as drones, are becoming widespread in society, and in biological field research. As drones become more commonplace, they are invading the same airspace as birds.
  • There is little information on how drones affect wildlife, specifically birds, and if they cause any physiological response or stress. This study sought to answer these questions by flying a drone over the nest boxes of tree swallows (TRES; Tachycineta bicolor). Stress levels will be measured by comparing corticosterone (CORT) levels and telomere lengths from before and after birds received either …

Vulnerability Of Resource Users In Louisiana’S Oyster Fishery To Environmental Hazards, Austin T. Humphries, Lauren I. Josephs, Megan K. La Peyre, Steven Hall, Rachel Dowty Beech Jan 2019

Vulnerability Of Resource Users In Louisiana’S Oyster Fishery To Environmental Hazards, Austin T. Humphries, Lauren I. Josephs, Megan K. La Peyre, Steven Hall, Rachel Dowty Beech

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Knowledge of vulnerability provides the foundation for developing actions that minimize impacts on people while maximizing the sustainability of ecosystem goods and services. As a result, it is becoming increasingly important to determine how resource-dependent people are vulnerable to environmental hazards. This idea is particularly true in coastal Louisiana, USA, where the current era of rapid land loss has the potential to undermine oyster fisheries. However, little is known about how such environmental change might differentially affect resource users and stakeholders. We examined social components of vulnerability to environmental hazards using indicators of susceptibility and adaptive capacity within the oyster …

Summer Research

In 2014, Dr. Jason VanHorn began a project aimed at producing an Online Bible Atlas using ESRI software. This summer, that work was continued in laying down the framework for an atlas comprised of freely-available, high quality, interactive, and downloadable maps to be used by the Church at large, ideally in a corporate worship setting and in personal Bible study.

The goals for this inaugural summer of research were to:

  • Compile an academic literature review of existing Bible atlases
  • Build online and printable template to serve as long-term frameworks for future map production
  • Construct map prototypes

Move It Or Lose It: Interspecific Variation In Risk Response Of Pond-Breeding Anurans, Philip Matich, Christopher M. Schalk Jan 2019

Move It Or Lose It: Interspecific Variation In Risk Response Of Pond-Breeding Anurans, Philip Matich, Christopher M. Schalk

Faculty Publications

Changes in behavior are often the proximate response of animals to human disturbance, with variability in tolerance levels leading some species to exhibit striking shifts in life history, fitness, and/or survival. Thus, elucidating the effects of disturbance on animal behavior, and how this varies among taxonomically similar species with inherently different behaviors and life histories is of value for management and conservation. We evaluated the risk response of three anuran species—southern leopard frog (Lithobates sphenocephalus), Blanchard’s cricket frog (Acris blanchardi), and green tree frog (Hyla cinerea)—to determine how differences in microhabitat use (arboreal vs …

Sustainability Literacy In French Literature And Film: From Solitary Reveries To Treks Across Deserts, Annette Sampon-Nicolas

French Faculty Scholarship

This essay explores the imperative to embrace a new model of education that will engage students in learning about the interconnectedness of our multi species world, sustainability, and global solidarity -- the belief "that unity of humankind can be established on the basis of some basic or core human values" (Korab-Karpowicz 305). Foreign language courses -- in particular advanced-level offerings that address literacy, critical thinking, and cultural comparisons -- are ideal settings for educating for sustainability literacy. Such literacy is essential to our collective twenty-first-century global identity, but it requires transformative educational practices. As we design foreign language courses, we …

Reintegrating Biology Through The Nexus Of Information And Energy, Kim L. Hoke, Sara L. Zimmer, Mary Jo Ondrechen, Amedee Des Georges, Adam B. Roddy, Nicole R. Buan, Craig E. Williamson

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Recent rapid advances in biology have led to diversification and sub-specialization of many fields, as well as a corresponding explosion of new findings. Advances in tools ranging from genomic techniques and high-resolution imaging to automated ecosystem- and biosphere-level sensors, along with correspondingly advanced analytics, have led to critical new insights that are transforming our understanding of biological systems. One of the consequences of these rapid advances has been accelerated splintering of biology into sub-disciplines with highly focused questions, vocabulary, and techniques. This splintering creates barriers to synergy across fields of biology and hinders the insights that could be gained at …

Ignatian Intent: Using Ignatian Pedagogy For Sustainability In The Sociology Classroom, Erin E. Robinson Jan 2019

Ignatian Intent: Using Ignatian Pedagogy For Sustainability In The Sociology Classroom, Erin E. Robinson

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

In the sociology classroom, students expressed thoughts of denial of the importance of a number of social issues, including climate change. During this time, I was involved in two initiatives which were collaborative efforts to weave Ignatian Pedagogy with sustainability education. First, at Canisius College, we developed a Sustainability Initiative to embrace a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability in academics, community and campus culture. Second, I was invited to become involved with the AJCU Ecology Educators group working on the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability. Through the application of the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability tool kit, I took the opportunity to …

In The Heights: An Analysis Of Transit-Oriented Development And Its Impacts On Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, Alex Caruso Jan 2019

In The Heights: An Analysis Of Transit-Oriented Development And Its Impacts On Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, Alex Caruso

Theses & ETDs

Transit-oriented development can be a useful approach to urban planning, and can assist in remedying many of the issues that face modern cities. However, there is a certain irony in that transit-oriented development is possibly complicit in effects such as gentrification and displacement of communities. Through this investigation into the literature, applications can be made towards understanding events in the case of Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. Boyle Heights, which has seen an increasing amount of attempts at transit-oriented development in the last ten years, has been in conflict with planners at many levels of the process. Through the interactions of …

Resetting The Connection: Legal Personhood And Decolonization In Aotearoa New Zealand, Sarah Kelly Jan 2019

Resetting The Connection: Legal Personhood And Decolonization In Aotearoa New Zealand, Sarah Kelly

Theses & ETDs

Exploitation and pollution of the environment has led some to search for a better way to protect the environment in law. In its current form, the majority of Western environmental policy only considers human interests. This shortcoming has been confronted in a few notable cases around the world where law has granted nature itself with “all the rights, powers, duties, and liabilities of a legal person.” Synthesizing philosophical, historical, ethnographic, and legal sources, this thesis examines how the “rights of nature” movement provides an avenue for decolonization and the legitimization of indigenous worldviews in mainstream policy. Two New Zealand examples …

Taking Coal To The Polls: A Critical Analysis Of Voting Patterns In West Virginia, 1960-2018, Jessie Sinitch Jan 2019

Taking Coal To The Polls: A Critical Analysis Of Voting Patterns In West Virginia, 1960-2018, Jessie Sinitch

Theses & ETDs

From 1960 to 1996, West Virginia voted for just two Republican presidential candidates. West Virginia was known for being filled with “New Deal Democrats” and had all Democratic Senators and just three Republican Governors from 1961 to 1997. Since 2000, West Virginia has voted for Republican presidential candidates each election cycle. This paper seeks to examine this change in political voting outcomes through a historical and political analysis of voting trends in West Virginia from 1960 to 2018. Gubernatorial and congressional data are also examined. The results of this paper illustrate that positions for the Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, …

I evaluate the role of agroforestry through combining research into historical agriculture and Delaware Valley ecology as well as five interviews conducted with three current agroforestry practitioners. Ecosystems that grow fruit and nut crops throughout urban, suburban, and rural communities of the Delaware Valley can address issues of crop diversity preservation, lack of community green spaces, food insecurity for community members, and natural disaster …

Breaking The Bee’S Knees: An Overview Of Global Pollinator Decline And Conservation Efforts On The New College Of Florida Campus, Jackie Lebouitz Jan 2019

Breaking The Bee’S Knees: An Overview Of Global Pollinator Decline And Conservation Efforts On The New College Of Florida Campus, Jackie Lebouitz

Theses & ETDs

We live in a world where anthropogenic activity and its consequences (pollution, habitat destruction, climate change, etc.) have led to the loss of pollinator biodiversity. Both agricultural operations and general ecosystems require pollination for stability. Biodiversity provides an excellent ecological buffer for compromised species that may disappear due to environmental stressors, disease, and genetic bottlenecks. In fact, bats, birds, butterflies, beetles, and even some species of lizards can provide pollination services to plants. Some flowering plants rely on specialist pollinators for their continued persistence in an ecological community, and the vulnerability of these species can lead to disruptions in the …

Fill The Earth And Subdue It: Evangelicals, Environmentalism, And Religious Divides, James Spencer Powell Jan 2019

Fill The Earth And Subdue It: Evangelicals, Environmentalism, And Religious Divides, James Spencer Powell

Theses & ETDs

Christianity contains numerous ecotheologies that present humans as the epitome of creation, but also instruct them to care for the Earth. While Christian environmental organizations have flourished over the past few decades, studies have consistently linked belief in Christianity and Evangelicalism in particular to negative environmental ethics and lack of support for environmental regulation. Numerous explanations for Evangelical’s aversion to environmentalism have been explored and tested such as biblical literalism, religiosity, morality, eschatology, and political conservatism with different explanations ultimately resulting. This led me to explore what aspects of Christianity are responsible for these environmental ethics by studying the social …

The Effect Of Anthropogenic Noise Pollution On The Foraging Efficiency Of Corn Snakes (Pantherophis Guttatus), Margaret Hoffswell Jan 2019

The Effect Of Anthropogenic Noise Pollution On The Foraging Efficiency Of Corn Snakes (Pantherophis Guttatus), Margaret Hoffswell

Theses & ETDs

Travel by car produces many types of pollution and one of the most disregarded of these types is noise pollution. Sadly, the vast majority of populations that may be affected by noise pollution remain unstudied. This research aims to investigate the effects of such traffic noise on the widespread and charming corn snake. Snakes rely on highly sensitive mechanoreception to hunt, including an acute articulation of their ear bone directly to their jaw. Because noise pollution may interfere with these senses, it may hinder their ability to forage effectively. To study this relationship, I subjected eight snakes to artificial traffic …

Rough And Tumble Play In The Domestic Dog (Canis Familiaris), Aren Hendrickson Jan 2019

Rough And Tumble Play In The Domestic Dog (Canis Familiaris), Aren Hendrickson

Theses & ETDs

Rough-and-tumble play is a type of social play characterized by both competition and cooperation. The experience of rough-and-tumble play may allow juveniles to calibrate their emotional response and improve motor, neural, and social development. Playing as adults has been shown to reduce current stress levels. In the animal kingdom, rough-and-tumble play typically happens between familiar individuals. At off-leash dog parks, familiar and unfamiliar individuals play, which requires intricate social coordination. How do they do it? Here we observed naturally occurring playful behaviors of domestic dogs in 14 dyadic play bouts at an off-leash dog park in Bradenton, Florida. We video-recorded …

Critiquing Environmental Rhetoric: An Exploration Of Ecocriticism And Its Value To Activism, Tristen Johns Jan 2019

Critiquing Environmental Rhetoric: An Exploration Of Ecocriticism And Its Value To Activism, Tristen Johns

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the field of ecocriticism, tracing its conceptualization as a subgenre of literary critique and discussing its implications for the community of scholars and environmental activists. I explore commonly cited definitions of the field and examine ecocritics’ works. I also discuss the importance of the ecocritical approach and its value to the field of environmental study and activism. I advocate for the importance of the humanities to work in environmental studies, a perspective often missing in my experience from research related to the ecological crisis. Ecocritics do far more than contribute critiques of specific pieces of literature, but …

The Yucatec Maya Milpa: Integrating Livelihood, Environment, And Culture, Allegra Nolan Jan 2019

The Yucatec Maya Milpa: Integrating Livelihood, Environment, And Culture, Allegra Nolan

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the milpa agricultural system utilized by the indigenous Maya of the Yucatán Peninsula. Informed by both personal fieldwork and anthropological texts, the first two chapters describe the technical and cultural practices within the system. Through this description, I demonstrate the multi-faceted character of the milpa, a framework for food production, environmental management, and cultural expression. This traditional system is not confined to a period of history, but rather continuously adapts to changes in environmental conditions, human needs, and market influences. However, the productive capacity of the milpa field has declined under the pressures of increasingly intense change, …

Food Justice, Or Just Foodies?: Cultivating Local Food In Segregated Spaces, Timothy Manning Jan 2019

Food Justice, Or Just Foodies?: Cultivating Local Food In Segregated Spaces, Timothy Manning

Theses & ETDs

Farmers markets have grown more prevalent in recent years as different cities and communities use them to invigorate public spaces and provide healthy food. They are a manifestation of the alternative foods movement, a broad movement dedicating to changing the way that food is produced, distributed, and consumed. Increasingly, the alternative foods movement has become a site of food justice work, which is focused on bringing healthy food to communities that have historically not had access and creating socially sustainable forms of agriculture. This thesis examines two farmers markets in the city of Sarasota, Florida, which are geographically close but …
