Specification Tests For Temporal Heterogeneity In Spatial Panel Models With Fixed Effects, Yuhong Xu, Zhenlin Yang
Specification Tests For Temporal Heterogeneity In Spatial Panel Models With Fixed Effects, Yuhong Xu, Zhenlin Yang
Research Collection School Of Economics
We propose score type tests for testing the existence of temporal heterogeneity in slope and spatial parameters in spatial panel data (SPD) models, allowing for the presence of individual-specific and/or time-specific fixed effects (or in general intercept heterogeneity). The SPD model with spatial lag effect is treated in detail by first considering the model with individual-specific effects only, and then extending it to the model with both individual and time specific effects. Two types of tests (naive and robust) are proposed, and their asymptotic properties are presented. These tests are then fully extended to an SPD model with both spatial …
Environmental Protection Services And Salvage Law : Emerging Issues In Perspective, Huiru Liu
Environmental Protection Services And Salvage Law : Emerging Issues In Perspective, Huiru Liu
World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations
This dissertation primarily concerns the law and practice of salvage focusing on its environmental dimension which started to evolve since the Torrey Canyon disaster in 1967, which until that time, was the biggest oil spill in maritime history. In the contemporary era of shipping, a major part of salvorial operations has shifted from property preservation to environmental protection. This dissertation centers on the services provided by salvors to prevent or mitigate damage to the environment. This phenomenon is generally referred to as "environmental salvage" which, it is submitted, is an anomaly and a misnomer. It is therefore proposed that the …

Food-Insecure Household’S Self-Reported Perceptions Of Food Labels, Product Attributes And Consumption Behaviours, Lucy M. Butcher, Maria M. Ryan
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Dietary compromises related to food insecurity profoundly undermine health and constitute a serious public health issue, even in developed nations. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of food labelling and product attributes on the purchasing choices of food-insecure households in Australia. An online survey containing 19 food choice and 28 purchasing behaviours questions was completed by 1056 adults responsible for household grocery shopping. The short form of the US Household Food Security Survey Module was used as the food security indicator. Multinomial logistic regression modelling was employed to analyse the survey data. Respondents were classified as …
The Consumer Imaginary: Labor Rights, Human Rights, And Citizen-Consumers In The Global Supply Chain, Kevin Kolben
The Consumer Imaginary: Labor Rights, Human Rights, And Citizen-Consumers In The Global Supply Chain, Kevin Kolben
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Consumers are increasingly demanding that the goods and services they consume be produced in a way that meets their social expectations. By extension, they are exhibiting greater willingness to pay more at the cash register for products made in good working conditions, and they are willing to punish companies that do not satisfy these expectations. Driving these "citizen-consumers" is what this Article terms the "consumer imaginary," which is defined as the narratives that consumers tell themselves about the people that make their things--people whom consumers will likely never meet, and whose lived experiences are distant from their own. Policymakers have …

Emerging Market Economies And International Investment Law: Turkey-Africa Bilateral Investment Treaties, Uche E. Ofodile
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Article offers a critical and penetrating insight into the bilateral investment treaties (BITs) between Turkey and countries in Africa. Since 2003, Turkey has concluded BITs with twenty-eight countries in Africa. This Article seeks answers to some very important questions. In the BITs between Turkey and countries in Africa, is Turkey merely conforming to the norms and standards established by Western countries, or is Turkey changing these norms in fundamental ways? Compared to BITs between Western nations and countries in Africa, are Turkey-Africa BITs more oriented towards sustainable development and, if so, in what respects? In what ways are emerging …
In Defense Of Human Rights, Karima Bennoune
In Defense Of Human Rights, Karima Bennoune
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Article argues that international human rights law, and the human rights movement more generally, need more defenders than critics in the current international political environment. Groups ranging from academics to governments have taken stances critical of human rights, and this Article seeks to defend the rights framework from some of these while also arguing for the importance of human rights in today's world. Noting that the field of human rights is not beyond criticism, this Article embraces some of those criticisms. However, it suggests that human rights law specialists need to spend at least as much time defending human …

Researchers from academia and the corporate-sector rely on scholarly digital libraries to access articles. Attackers take advantage of innocent users who consider the articles' files safe and thus open PDF-files with little concern. In addition, researchers consider scholarly libraries a reliable, trusted, and untainted corpus of papers. For these reasons, scholarly digital libraries are an attractive-target and inadvertently support the proliferation of cyber-attacks launched via malicious PDF-files. In this study, we present related vulnerabilities and malware distribution approaches that exploit the vulnerabilities of scholarly digital libraries. We evaluated over two-million scholarly papers in the CiteSeerX library and found the library …

Code Readability: A Proposal On The Effects Of Psychology And Comprehension In Software Development And Maintenance, Ethan Brian Sankey
Code Readability: A Proposal On The Effects Of Psychology And Comprehension In Software Development And Maintenance, Ethan Brian Sankey
Honors Program Theses
Because of the diversity and complexity of the hundreds of coding languages out there, code readability has become more and more of an issue as the years have passed and as the popularity of technology that required built-in computers has increased. With so many different formats, styles, and restrictions on each language, even a developer with experience in only a few common languages may have trouble remembering which language allows for certain indentation, which language requires variable instantiation, which language requires return statements at the end of functions. While I can appreciate the diversity and efficiency that having many different …
General Nutrition Knowledge Among High School Students, Annique Cornejo
General Nutrition Knowledge Among High School Students, Annique Cornejo
Loma Linda University Research Reports
Background: Obesity now affects 1-in-5 children and adolescents in the United States. As of 2018, the prevalence of obesity has reached 18.5% and affects about 13.7 million children. Obese children are at increased risk for high blood pressure and high cholesterol that can lead to cardiovascular disease, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Since health habits are commonly established during the formative years, it is imperative that good food choices and basic knowledge about nutrition be taught at an early age. This study examined whether students had received sufficient teaching about nutrition, particularly as it relates …

The Effects Of Mindful Eating Education On Increasing Satiety Signals, Audrey Bamford, Evelyn Gonzalez, Sneha Lalla
The Effects Of Mindful Eating Education On Increasing Satiety Signals, Audrey Bamford, Evelyn Gonzalez, Sneha Lalla
Loma Linda University Research Reports
Background: Mindful eating is a practice that incorporates focusing on thoughts, emotions and sensations within the body when consuming food. Satiety is defined as a state of fullness where there is no longer an intake of food. Mindful eating techniques could help college students identify their hunger and satiety signals and respond to those cues over environmental or psychosocial cues that could lead to over-eating. Giving mindful eating education has the possibility to help people recognize their satiety signals and stop eating sooner.
Objective: To examine the effects of mindful eating education on increasing satiety signals.
Design: …
