Breast Cancer Screening In Uninsured Women, Carla Porter
Breast Cancer Screening In Uninsured Women, Carla Porter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. African American and Hispanic women have a higher incidence of breast cancer mortality rate than their counterparts. Minority women are more are unlikely to receive breast cancer screening and are often diagnosed at later stages. Women diagnosed with abnormal breast screening can experience barriers to timely follow-up care resulting in delays in cancer diagnosis. Early cancer screening and prevention does reduce mortality rates. Despite breast cancer screening programs, minority women continue to have lower screening rates compared to non-minority women. A non-profit Community Health Center (CHC) in South Florida serves …

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading, and third most preventable cancer in the United States (U.S.) (Center for Disease Control [CDC], 2019a) As the second leading cause of deaths in the U.S., more than 90% of CRC cases occur in people age 50 and older (CDC, 2019a). Roughly about 21.7 million of those at greatest risk of developing CRC have not been screened as recommended (CDC, 2019b). According to the national guidelines, the United States Preventative Service Task Force [USPSTF] recommends screening for CRC using a fecal occult blood testing (FIT or gFOBT) yearly, a sigmoidoscopy every 5 years …

Although there are clinical guidelines in place for the treatment of hypertension (HTN), many African Americans (AA) fail to reach controlled levels within the primary care setting. The ultimate goal of this quality improvement project is to provide evidence-based information that could be used to improve HTN care and decrease the rates of uncontrolled HTN among AA adults with HTN. The project was conducted at a Federally Qualified Health Center in Fort Pierce, Florida. The intention of this quality improvement project is to address the need for attention to this concerning issue, to highlight best current evidence, and to provide …

Improving Hgba1c And Overall Insulin Resistance For Patients With Type Ii Diabetes: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Whole-Food, Plant-Based Diet, Jennifer Seegott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), quality improvement project was to assist participants in the management of their type 2 diabetes through the use an evidencebased Whole-Food, Plant-Based (WFPB) diet approach. The project described the effectiveness of individual WFPB instruction and counseling. Following recruitment, the participant attended weekly dietary counseling sessions focused on incorporating a WFPB diet over a 6-week period. The participant completed the 16-item food intake questionnaire (16-FIQ) pre- and post-dietary counseling along with HgbA1c measurements during the project period. Building A Sustainable Agricultural Career Pipeline: Effective Recruitment And Retention Practices Used By Colleges Of Agriculture In The United States, Antoine J. Alston, Richie Roberts, Chastity Warren English
Building A Sustainable Agricultural Career Pipeline: Effective Recruitment And Retention Practices Used By Colleges Of Agriculture In The United States, Antoine J. Alston, Richie Roberts, Chastity Warren English
Journal of Research in Technical Careers
This national study examined effective student recruitment and retention practices used by colleges of agriculture in the United States among 1862 land-grant, 1890 land-grant, and non-land-grant institutions. Respondents reported that faculty at colleges of agriculture were primarily white. Through the analysis of sub-group percentages, the researchers found that the ethnic makeup of faculty was not reflective of the general population. The researchers found that administrators from 1862 land-grant institutions reported statistically significant differences (p < .05) regarding the use of specific strategies to target underrepresented populations in student recruitment as compared to other institutional types. Further, 1862 land-grant institutions reported statistically significant differences in student retention strategies (p < .05) as compared to other institutional types regarding the delivery of programs that aimed to retain first-year students. Based on key findings from this investigation, the authors developed the agricultural student retention model (ASRM) to help guide colleges of agriculture in improving their holistic retention program as they navigate inclusive and diverse institutional contexts. Additionally, key recruitment strategies were identified as well, that could facilitate holistic student recruitment efforts. Perhaps more significant progress can be made toward creating a sustainable agricultural workforce that is more reflective of U.S. population demographics using this model.

A Case Study Of The Development Of A Career Academy: Good Intentions Not Enough?, Victor M. Hernandez-Gantes, Edward C. Fletcher Jr., Sasha Keighobadi
Journal of Research in Technical Careers
The purpose of this study was to explore how a career academy featuring an information technology (IT) theme approached the adoption of the model and the particular curricular focus. We used a case study design to explore the experiences of school personnel and community partners associated with the implementation of the career academy. We found that growing enrollment in the local district was a major driver to pursue small school designs as an alternative to the traditional high school comprehensive model. The small school size associated with small learning communities was valued by stakeholders and used to adopt and implement …
