The Right To Support: Severely Disabled Children & Their Mothers, Sheila Kathleen Jennings Nov 2019

The Right To Support: Severely Disabled Children & Their Mothers, Sheila Kathleen Jennings

PhD Dissertations

The author examines how severely disabled children and their mothers, who are usually their primary caregivers, are treated by Canadian law and policy. She identifies and analyzes deficiencies in care and other supports the state makes available to them. She further provides an analysis of the role of the state as it increasingly privatizes responsibility for supports, including unpredictable and often complex forms of care, situating them in practice, with mothers. Caregiving mothers are required to provide what comprises maternally complex care, which may be medical, neurological or psychiatric in nature. Within complex care, visible and hidden costs have been …

Become An American Board Of Professional Psychology (Abpp) Board Certified Specialist In Behavioral And Cognitive Psychology, Linda C. Sobell

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

This workshop will focus on how to become a Board Certified Specialist in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology. Certification by ABPP demonstrates psychologists have met their specialty’s standards and competencies. Board Certification is valuable for several reasons: (a) it is increasingly becoming an expectation in our profession; (b) it enhances practitioner credibility for patients; (c) it distinguishes you from other psychologists; (d) there are potential salary increases by the VA, hospitals, the military, and other health care facilities; (e) it enhances qualifications as an expert witness; (f) it facilitates inter-jurisdictional licensing and practice mobility; and (g) it streamlines the credentialing process …

Imagine Being Accused Of Scientific Fraud!, Linda C. Sobell, Mark B. Sobell

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

Our careers have been characterized by wonderfully serendipitous opportunities; being accused of scientific fraud was not one of them. The study involved a randomized controlled trial we conducted in 1970-1971 with alcohol abusers using a low-risk drinking goal rather than an abstinence goal, and the low-risk drinking goal group had better outcomes over 3 years of follow-up. In 1982 it was alleged that we had committed scientific fraud. The attack received national and international attention, including on 60 Minutes. Fortunately, we had maintained meticulous records from the study for 12 years and were vindicated in four major investigations and a …

Examining Pharmaceutical Exceptionalism: Intellectual Property, Practical Expediency, And Global Health, Govind Persad Nov 2019

Examining Pharmaceutical Exceptionalism: Intellectual Property, Practical Expediency, And Global Health, Govind Persad

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Advocates, activists, and academics have criticized pharmaceutical intellectual property ("pharma IP") rights as obstacles to access to medicines for the global poor. These criticisms of pharma IP holders are frequently exceptionalist: they focus on pharma IP holders while ignoring whether others also bear obligations to assist patients in need. These others include holders of other lucrative IP rights, such as music copyrights or technology patents; firms, such as energy companies and banks, that do not rely on IP; and wealthy private individuals. Their resources could be used to aid patients by providing direct medical assistance, funding prizes or biomedical research, …

African-American Baccalaureate Nursing Students' Perceptions Of Nursing Programs And Factors That Support Or Restrict Academic Success, Sharon Marie Mills-Wisneski Nov 2019

African-American Baccalaureate Nursing Students' Perceptions Of Nursing Programs And Factors That Support Or Restrict Academic Success, Sharon Marie Mills-Wisneski

Dissertations

The nursing literature is limited in reporting African-American nursing students' perceptions of nursing programs and factors that are viewed as supportive of or restrictive to academic success in this selected population. Bean and Metzner's (1985) conceptual model of Nontraditional Student Attrition proposed that there are four sets of variables that have a direct affect on whether nontraditional students will persist in their educational endeavors: (1) background and defining variables, (2) academic variables, (3) environmental variables, and (4) psychological outcomes. The National agenda to increase workforce diversity and leadership succession is critical to improving access for a culturally diverse society. The …

What Does Time Management Mean To You? Exploring Measures Of Time Management And Group Differences., Allison Burrus Nov 2019

What Does Time Management Mean To You? Exploring Measures Of Time Management And Group Differences., Allison Burrus

Dissertations

For centuries people have been trying to find ways to effectively manage their time. Meanwhile, research in this area has lagged and provided inconsistent results about the outcomes (i.e., well-being and job performance) of the use of time management behaviors. A potential reason for the inconsistent results is the lack of a universal conceptualization of time management making it difficult to compare results. Further, it may be that certain groups use and/or interpret time management behaviors in different ways. This study investigated three of the most popular measures of time management concurrently. First, the measures were examined for statistical artifacts, …

Meeting Gifted Students’ Classroom Needs: A Phenomenological Study On Teachers’ Needs In Order To Effectively Implement Differentiated Instruction In The Classroom, Renee D. Mallot Nov 2019

Meeting Gifted Students’ Classroom Needs: A Phenomenological Study On Teachers’ Needs In Order To Effectively Implement Differentiated Instruction In The Classroom, Renee D. Mallot

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

There are a wide variety of learners in each classroom. Students have different needs, learning styles, motivations, strengths, and weaknesses. Gifted and talented learners are often those students who understand the concept being taught before any other student; they are the ones whose brains are constantly working, sometimes solving a problem differently than anyone else. The problem addressed was that gifted learners are not typically given the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills. Instead, they are taught as a whole class with the rest of the students. The goal of this qualitative phenomenological study was to identify the ways …

Radon (222rn) Concentrations In The Touristic Jumandy Cave In The Amazon Region Of Ecuador, Felipe Alejandro García Paz, Yasser Alejandro Gonzalez Romero, Rasa Zalakeviciute Nov 2019

Radon (222rn) Concentrations In The Touristic Jumandy Cave In The Amazon Region Of Ecuador, Felipe Alejandro García Paz, Yasser Alejandro Gonzalez Romero, Rasa Zalakeviciute

KIP Articles

This work consists of the detection and quantification of the concentration levels of radioactive gas radon-222 (222Rn) of natural origin, as well as the determination of the critical points and the estimation of the effective dose absorbed by the tourists and guides inside the Jumandy cavern in Napo, Ecuador. According to the feasibility map of uranium of Ecuador, the study area is located in one of the top-priority areas for obtaining uranium, suggesting possible radioactivity in this unstudied region. The measurements were carried out from July to October of 2017, in three different monitoring points inside the cavern. The average …

Trends And Disparities In Self-Reported And Measured Osteoporosis Among Us Adults, 2007-2014., Qing Wu, Yingke Xu, Ge Lin

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

(1) Background: Studies examining osteoporosis trends among US adults by different socioeconomic status (SES) are limited. The prevalence of self-reported osteoporosis in the US is rarely reported. (2) Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007–2008 and 2013–2014 cycles were analyzed. Age-adjusted prevalence of self-reported and that of measured osteoporosis were calculated overall and by sex, race/ethnicity, education attainment, and SES. (3) Results: The prevalence of self-reported osteoporosis was higher than that of measured osteoporosis in all three survey cycles for women, and in 2007–2008 and 2009–2010 for men. Participants with high school/GED or higher …
