Reading Behaviors Of Deaf Bilingual College Students, Jean F. Andrews, Andrea Karlin Nov 2019

Reading Behaviors Of Deaf Bilingual College Students, Jean F. Andrews, Andrea Karlin

JADARA

Of the 2 million deaf Americans in the US, many go on to higher education and learn to read English without hearing conversational speech. Despite the fact that numerous studies have documented low reading levels of deaf students on standardized tests of English language achievement (Traxler, 2000), many deaf adults read of ten and read very well for everyday purposes. Few studies have examined the strategies of successful skilled deaf bilingual readers. Bilingual deaf adults use American Sign Language (ASL) and English daily in a variety of contexts. While a small minority of deaf adults are monolingual using only spoken …

Confidentiality In Mental Health With Deaf Populations Perceptions Of The Consumer, Carol Cohen Nov 2019

Confidentiality In Mental Health With Deaf Populations Perceptions Of The Consumer, Carol Cohen

JADARA

Confidentiality issues have drawn concern among clinicians in the field of mental health. In part, managed care, fax machines, electronic records, and the use of the internet have added to the concerns related to the protection of client rights, especially related to confidentiality. The issues of confidentiality have always been a concern for therapists who work with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Due to the close-knit nature of the Deaf community, clinicians who provide psychotherapeutic services have the added burden of protection of confidentiality as it relates to chance encounters, dual role and boundary issues between consumers, and the use of …

Accessibility Of Interpreting Services For Deaf Prisons Inmates At Arrest And In Court: A Matter Of Basic Constitutional Rights, Katrina R. Miller, Mccay Vernon Nov 2019

Accessibility Of Interpreting Services For Deaf Prisons Inmates At Arrest And In Court: A Matter Of Basic Constitutional Rights, Katrina R. Miller, Mccay Vernon

JADARA

Self-reports of 72 profoundly deaf, signing inmates incarcerated in the state of Texas post-ADA revealed that only 27.8% had been provided a sign language interpreter at arrest. Furthermore, almost 20% reported that they received no interpreting services in the courtroom, despite being charged with felony offenses. The average educational achievement of these 72 individuals was second grade. Specific barriers to due process that deaf suspects and defendants face when interacting with the criminal justice system are stereotypes that all deaf people can speech read (read lips) and read written English proficiently enough to preclude the use of sign language interpreters. …

"Remembering Betsy" By Her Two Professors And Editors, Thomas Green, Dirk Hartog Nov 2019

"Remembering Betsy" By Her Two Professors And Editors, Thomas Green, Dirk Hartog

Tributes

On November 23, 2019, immediately following the conclusion of the annual meeting of the American Society for Legal History, Boston University School of Law held a ceremony marking the opening of an archive devoted to the scholarship of Elizabeth Clark. Betsy Clark, who taught at BU before her untimely death in 1997, was an important presence in the world of legal history in the 1980s and early 1990s. And the archive includes a number of short “responses” to her scholarship. Her colleagues David Seipp and Pnina Lahav were responsible for making the archive a reality.

No Change Detected In Culturable Fungal Assemblages On Cave Walls In Eastern Canada With The Introduction Of Pseudogymnoascus Destructans, Karen J. Vanderwolf, David Malloch, Donald F. Mcalpine

KIP Articles

Studies of fungi in caves have become increasingly important with the advent of white-nose syndrome (WNS), a disease caused by the invasive fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) that has killed an estimated 6.5 million North American bats. We swabbed cave walls in New Brunswick, Canada, in 2012 and 2015 to determine whether the culturable fungal assemblage on cave walls changed after the introduction of Pd and subsequent decrease in hibernating bat populations. We also compared fungal assemblages on cave walls to previous studies on the fungal assemblages of arthropods and hibernating bats in the same sites. The fungal diversity of bats …

One Half Billion Strong They Came: Gray Squirrel Migrations In The American Old Northwest During The 19th Century, Diana L. Ahmad

History and Political Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

After the American Revolution ended in the 1780s, the citizens of the new United States moved north of the Ohio River into the Northwest. As they established homes, they saw many gray, furry creatures known scientifically as sciurus carolinensis. It took little time for the farmers to discover that the gray squirrels were their new enemy. Instead of being cute little forest dwellers, the squirrels proved to be a danger to the newly transplanted farmers when the animals suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere appeared by the millions. The squirrels ate the freshly planted seeds, as well as the crops …

Away With The Apprentice: Graduate Worker Advocacy Groups And Rhetorical Representation, Zachary B. Marburger Nov 2019

Away With The Apprentice: Graduate Worker Advocacy Groups And Rhetorical Representation, Zachary B. Marburger

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

While graduate workers have a long history of organizing and advocating on their own behalf, concerns specific to their unique identity as both laborers and students have not yet permeated the discourse surrounding worker rights in higher education. Using Edward Schiappa’s work on how definitions are created and circulated, I position that the work and labor of the graduate student is under-discoursed because of the mundane definition of the graduate worker as an apprentice first and foremost. Drawing on the public literature of the Committee on Rights and Compensation (CRC), a current effort to unionize graduate workers underway at the …

Snapshots Of #Wpalife: Invisible Labor And Writing Program Administration, Megan Mcintyre Nov 2019

Snapshots Of #Wpalife: Invisible Labor And Writing Program Administration, Megan Mcintyre

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

Writing program administration work is a significant reality for many within the field of rhetoric and composition, and though such work has long been part of our disciplinary fabric, it often remains invisible to departments and institutions. In this article, I offer two brief snapshots of how writing program administration work is often obscured by seemingly brief documents or interactions, which elide the complex communicative and political work at the heart of program administration. I then offer a hashtag-based Twitter community, #WPALife, as one potential way of making this work more visible and of building the capacity to create more …

(Mis)Alignments Between Institutional Mission Statements And Service Learning Handbooks, Charisse S. Iglesias Nov 2019

(Mis)Alignments Between Institutional Mission Statements And Service Learning Handbooks, Charisse S. Iglesias

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

Institutions self-identifying as social justice advocates are expected to perform social justice roles through their disciplines, policies, and actions (Feldman, 2008). Applying Tania Mitchell’s critical service learning framework (2008), this study examines (mis)alignments between service learning handbooks and their respective institutional mission statements. The first phase was a critical discourse analysis of the service learning handbooks to measure expressions of reciprocity. The second phase was a content analysis of the corresponding institutional mission statements to analyze conceptions of community engagement, social justice, etc. Findings reveal how institutions frame handbooks, considers how that framing undermines reciprocity, and analyzes how universities practice …

Sustaining Community-Engaged Projects: Making Visible The Invisible Labor Of Composition Faculty, Jessica Rose Corey, Barbara George Nov 2019

Sustaining Community-Engaged Projects: Making Visible The Invisible Labor Of Composition Faculty, Jessica Rose Corey, Barbara George

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

Increasingly, service-learning, community-engaged projects, or community-engaged learning are encouraged in higher education as part of HIPs, or High Impact Practices. While the authors' experiences with service-learning or community-engaged learning in our composition courses have been positive, and while student engagement is generally acknowledged as a desirable outcome of any pedagogy, we posit that there are questions about the labor system needed to sustain such practices. We use narratives to reflect upon our experiences holding various identity positions within academia (from graduate student, adjunct, to NTT and TT positions), and research about the work involved with community engaged projects, to interrogate …

Developing Device-Equivalent And Effective Measures Of Complex Thinking With An Information Processing Framework And Mobile First Design Principles, Darrin M. Grelle, Sara L. Gutierrez Nov 2019

Developing Device-Equivalent And Effective Measures Of Complex Thinking With An Information Processing Framework And Mobile First Design Principles, Darrin M. Grelle, Sara L. Gutierrez

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Organizations are increasingly offering pre-employment assessments on mobile devices to evaluate candidates. The aim of this study is to investigate whether employing a mobile first responsive web design based on an information processing framework will result in device-equivalent measures of cognitive ability. Tests of numerical and deductive reasoning composed of interactive item types were tested for measurement equivalence across device types. Hypotheses were tested using data collected from paid participants over 3 weeks in 2018. Participants completed the test on both a PC and a mobile device. Paired samples t-tests indicated no mean differences in scores or number of items …

Validity Evidence For Off-The-Shelf Language-Based Personality Assessment Using Video Interviews: Convergent And Discriminant Relationships With Self And Observer Ratings, Louis Hickman, Louis Tay, Sang Eun Woo Nov 2019

Validity Evidence For Off-The-Shelf Language-Based Personality Assessment Using Video Interviews: Convergent And Discriminant Relationships With Self And Observer Ratings, Louis Hickman, Louis Tay, Sang Eun Woo

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Technological advances have led to the development of automated methods for personnel assessment that are purported to augment or outperform human judgment. However, empirical research providing validity evidence for such techniques in the selection context remains scarce. In addressing this void, this study focuses on language-based personality assessments using an off-the-shelf, commercially available product (i.e., IBM Watson Personality Insights) in the context of video-based interviews. The scores derived from the language-based assessment were compared to self and observer ratings of personality to examine convergent and discriminant relationships. The language-based assessment scores showed low convergence with self-ratings for openness, and with …
