Exploring Relationships Between Parenting Style, Perceived Stress, Coping Efficacy And Coping Strategies In Foster Parents, Jason Coleman
Exploring Relationships Between Parenting Style, Perceived Stress, Coping Efficacy And Coping Strategies In Foster Parents, Jason Coleman
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Removing a youth from the care of their biological family can place them at heightened risk for behavioral, emotional, social, and academic problems, and contribute to parenting stress. Foster caregivers with a high burden level may be impeded in their ability to function effectively. Our study investigated relationships between foster parent stress, coping efficacy, coping strategies, and parenting style to identify effective coping strategies in 178 foster parents. Current foster parents completed self-report measures assessing parenting styles, Coping Self Efficacy Scale (CSE), Brief COPE, and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Results indicated foster parents with more than three years of experience …
Gender, Politics, Market Segmentation, And Taste: Adult Contemporary Radio At The End Of The Twentieth Century, Saesha Senger
Gender, Politics, Market Segmentation, And Taste: Adult Contemporary Radio At The End Of The Twentieth Century, Saesha Senger
Theses and Dissertations--Music
This dissertation explores issues of gender politics, market segmentation, and taste through an examination of the contributions of several artists who have achieved Adult Contemporary (AC) chart success. The scope of the project is limited to a period when many artists who figured prominently in both the broader mainstream of American popular music and the more specific Adult Contemporary category were most commercially viable: from the mid-1980s through the 1990s. My contention is that, as gender politics and gendered social norms continued to change in the United States at this time, Adult Contemporary – the chart, the format, and the …
Psychological Well-Being And Acculturation Of Mexican Alumni Of U.S. Colleges And Universities, Cynthia L. Ruelas
Psychological Well-Being And Acculturation Of Mexican Alumni Of U.S. Colleges And Universities, Cynthia L. Ruelas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Hispanic population is the largest and fastest growing population in the United States, which necessitates research on the acculturation process, especially because of the current events regarding the Texas–Mexico border. Although research has indicated the need to develop coping skills to support positive mental health during acculturation, there is a lack of empirical information regarding acculturation and mental health among Mexican alumni of U.S. colleges and universities. Based on social identity theory and acculturation theory, this quantitative, correlational study was conducted to examine the relationship between acculturation and psychological well-being (PWB) among Mexican alumni of colleges and universities in …
Why The Gospel Of John Is Fundamental To Jesus Research (Chapter One Of Jesus Research: The Gospel Of John In Historical Inquiry), Paul N. Anderson
Why The Gospel Of John Is Fundamental To Jesus Research (Chapter One Of Jesus Research: The Gospel Of John In Historical Inquiry), Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The constellation of the Johannine riddles—theological, historical, literary—and their implications for understanding the Jesus of history as well as the Christ of faith, and thus the historical and religious basis of western civilization, comprises arguably the most difficult set of biblical critical issues and discussions in the modern era: full stop. Just as John’s theological tensions precipitated and contributed to the most intensive and extensive of theological discussions in the patristic era, so John’s literary and historical tensions have contributed to most intensive and extensive literary and historical biblical discussions in the modern era. Understandably, the issues are complex. The …

Cartografías Afectivas Para Tiempos De Crisis. Emocionalidad Textual En La Poesía Española Reciente, Alberto López Martín
Cartografías Afectivas Para Tiempos De Crisis. Emocionalidad Textual En La Poesía Española Reciente, Alberto López Martín
The Coastal Review
This article pays attention to the mobilizing potential of certain poetic productions in the context of the 2008 Spanish financial crisis. From the perspective of Affect and Emotion studies, I use Jonathan Flatley’s notion of affective cartography to illustrate how Antonio Orihuela and Pablo García Casado’s poems extrapolate from personal dimensions of the financial crisis’ drama (unemployment, evictions, etc.) to the socio-political sphere. I argue that, in such context, the poems studied possess the potentiality of arousing an empowering empathy and indignation in a historically-situated reader.
Radical Vulnerability, Richa Nagar, Roozbeh Shirazi
Radical Vulnerability, Richa Nagar, Roozbeh Shirazi
Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications
The co‐constitutive concepts of radical vulnerability, situated solidarities, and hungry translations are rooted in evolving journeys of saathis of Sangtin Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan or SKMS, a movement of 8000 small kisans and mazdoors in Sitapur District of Uttar Pradesh in India that emerged from the battles summarised in Playing with Fire and Muddying the Waters. Radical vulnerability seeks to reimagine the temporalities and meanings of knowledge‐making partnerships by surrendering to a politics of co‐travelling and co‐authorship, politics that are accompanied by difficult refusals. A relationality embedded in radical vulnerability strives to internalise that our self is intensely co‐constituted and entangled …
Where We Belong: Spatial Imagining In American Women’S Life Narratives, 1859-1912, Gokce Tekeli
Where We Belong: Spatial Imagining In American Women’S Life Narratives, 1859-1912, Gokce Tekeli
Theses and Dissertations--English
Where We Belong: Spatial Imagining in American Women’s Life Narratives, 1859-1912, studies three marginalized and disadvantaged American women’s self-life narratives during a transitional period in American history. In this dissertation, I am taking an interdisciplinary approach. Where We Belong borrows from social geography, new materialism, and autobiography studies in order to complicate critical discussions of women’s space and place in nineteenth-century women’s self-life narratives. Each chapter of Where We Belong presents a case study with the goal to provide a broader understanding of women’s strategies of belonging due to and despite their spatial exclusions. The overarching emphasis in each …
Fathers And Sons In Modern British, Irish, And Postcolonial Fiction, Alison Hitch
Fathers And Sons In Modern British, Irish, And Postcolonial Fiction, Alison Hitch
Theses and Dissertations--English
In this dissertation, I examine the portrayal of filial relationships in the fiction of James Joyce, Hanif Kureishi, and Zadie Smith. I assert that each of these authors, albeit in different ways, uses the archetypal father and son relationship to interrogate the formation of national identity and the concept of national belonging in modern, anticolonial or postcolonial cultures, including Ireland at the dawn of the twentieth century and Britain in the late twentieth century. Chapter one focuses on Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Ulysses (1922). I argue that rather than solely bonding in …

Virtual Ethnography: The Post Possibilities Of Not Being There, Lauren Angelone
Virtual Ethnography: The Post Possibilities Of Not Being There, Lauren Angelone
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The purpose of this paper is methodological. It serves as a defense of virtual ethnography as a method, not only well suited to postpositivist research, but as a tool to further interrogate the tenuous truth that all research produces. To accomplish this, virtual ethnography is situated within the history of qualitative inquiry and then examined in terms of data collection, analysis, and the types of productive challenges virtuality presents. The paper concludes by considering the use of virtual ethnography in education, particularly in the field of educational technology.
All Money Ain’T Good Money: The Interest Convergence Principle, White Philanthropy, And Black Education Of The Past And Present, Arcasia D. James-Gallaway
All Money Ain’T Good Money: The Interest Convergence Principle, White Philanthropy, And Black Education Of The Past And Present, Arcasia D. James-Gallaway
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This paper uses Derrick Bell's interest convergence principle, which argues that whites will support racial justice efforts only if they believe they will see gains for themselves, to examine white philanthropic support of Black education in the postbellum South and in current school reforms. Using the concept of “bad" (or compromising) money to describe philanthropy’s curtailment of Black self-determination and agency, this conceptual paper demonstrates how such philanthropy has promoted white capitalistic gain to the detriment of African American communities for decades. To build this claim, the author synthesizes key points from extant literature that address these topics. The paper …

A Rhetoric Of Zaniness: The Case Of Pepe The Frog, Sean Milligan
A Rhetoric Of Zaniness: The Case Of Pepe The Frog, Sean Milligan
Wayne State University Dissertations
A Rhetoric of Zaniness: The Case of Pepe the Frog argues that Sianne Ngai’s aesthetic category of zaniness is an essential concept for understanding and studying digital rhetoric in the post-truth era. To illustrate how zaniness has come to define online discourse, the dissertation traces the character of Pepe the Frog through various moments of, what Laurie Gries calls, “rhetorical transformation.” Specifically, the dissertation focuses on his initial appearance in Matt Furie’s Boy’s Club comics and transformation into a meme, his appropriation by the alt-right, and his adoption as propaganda for the Trump presidential campaign.

The teachers in the US classrooms are facing an unprecedented challenge of serving significantly large population of students who come from culturally and linguistically different backgrounds. These challenges are further exasperated because many teachers are not prepared to work with English Language Learners (ELLs) who have specific needs and require pedagogy that goes beyond content teaching. Therefore, many ELL students are not receiving the appropriate principles, practices and strategies necessary for them to succeed in the American classrooms. As the population of ELL students is steadily …
Cultivating Transmedia Storytelling: Real World Perceptions Derived From Popular Media, Tabitha Lynn Cassidy
Cultivating Transmedia Storytelling: Real World Perceptions Derived From Popular Media, Tabitha Lynn Cassidy
Wayne State University Dissertations
With continued interest in media convergence, transmedia storytelling is as prevalent to communication studies as ever. However, research into the effects of transmedia storytelling remains scarce. Looking at the difference between heavy and light viewers, cultivation theory purports that those who more frequently view violent programming on television are more likely to think the world is a violent place. As of writing, such effects have not yet been extended to transmedia storytelling. This dissertation fills in those gaps in research by examining the cultivation effects of transmedia storytelling usage on participants. First, the main themes or messages of content within …
The Many Worlds Of American Communism, Joshua James Morris
The Many Worlds Of American Communism, Joshua James Morris
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation examines the American Communist movement between 1928 and 1957 by dividing up sources into worlds of activity, such as political work, labor organizing, and community organizing, and examining the multiple forms of engagement and experience by individuals’ part of a social movement. My research demonstrates that a social movement such as advocating radical political change in the United States can take on a wide variety of forms and can mean different things to different people based on where they came from, how they got involved in the movement and what they directly contributed to that movement. For example, …
From Talking Softly To Carrying A Big Shtick: Jewish Masculinity In Twentieth-Century America, Miriam Eve Mora
From Talking Softly To Carrying A Big Shtick: Jewish Masculinity In Twentieth-Century America, Miriam Eve Mora
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation follows the progress of American Jewish men in the difficult and often backsliding process of acculturation into American life. Jewish men have historically been held to a different standard of masculinity, one which both Jews and non-Jews throughout American history have ascribed in both positive and negative ways, often depicting Jewish men as bookish, gentle, weak, and even effeminate. Those Jews who strove to attain American manhood engaged in masculine American endeavors to the extent of their access and ingenuity. Their struggle to enter institutions of American masculinity reveals a great deal about Jewish acceptance in the United …

Road Trippin': Twentieth-Century American Road Narratives From On The Road To The Road, Scott M. Obernesser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
"Road Trippin:’ Twentieth-Century American Road Narratives and Petrocultures from On The Road to The Road" examines late-twentieth century U.S. road narratives in an effort to trace the development of American petrocultures geographically and culturally in the decades after World War II. The highway stories that gain popularity throughout the era trace not simply how Americans utilize oil, but how the postwar American oil ethos in literature, film, and music acts upon and shapes human interiority and vice versa. Roads and highways frame my critique because they are at once networks of commerce transportation and producers of a unique, romantic …
Rambling Blues: Mapping Contemporary North American Blues Literature, Josh-Wade Ferguson
Rambling Blues: Mapping Contemporary North American Blues Literature, Josh-Wade Ferguson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“Rambling Blues: Mapping Contemporary North American Blues Literature” revises the methodological assumptions that have underwritten our understanding of blues literature and the politics of race and region that surround it. Where previous commentators have defined blues literature primarily through its formal and thematic connections with blues music and with the sociohistorical contours of black southern life more generally this dissertation expands the boundaries of how we conceive blues literature by examining Langston Hughes’ poems “The Weary Blues” (1925) and “Po Boy Blues” (1926) August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (1984) Jesmyn Ward’s Salvage the Bones (2011) James Hannaham’s Delicious Foods …
Content Analysis Of The Journal Of Historical Research In Music Education: 1980-2019, Gail Simpson
Content Analysis Of The Journal Of Historical Research In Music Education: 1980-2019, Gail Simpson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive study is to explore the trends in historical research over a period of forty years (1980-2019) as presented in peer-revieJournal of Historical Research in Music Education (JHRME). This content analysis is geared towards examining categories of research conducted particularly within the last decade (2010-2019) with comparisons to previous studies. Adopting categories and definitions from Heller (1985), McCarthy (1999, 2012), and Stabler (1986), five questions guide the focus of investigation to include historical periods of study (e.g., 20th century), individuals, events, outcomes, and process variables, i.e., the teacher, the learner, the interaction of the teacher and …

Comparative Kinetic Modeling Of Growth And Molecular Hydrogen Overproduction By Engineered Strains Of Thermotoga Maritima, Raghuveer Singh, Rahul Tevatia, Derrick White, Yaşar Demirel, Paul H. Blum
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
Thermotoga maritima is an anaerobic hyperthermophilic bacterium known for its high amounts of hydrogen (H2) production. In the current study, the kinetic modeling was applied on the engineered strains of T. maritima that surpassed the natural H2 production limit. The study generated a kinetic model explaining H2 overproduction and predicted a continuous fermentation system. A Leudking-Piret equation-based model predicted that H2 production by Tma200 (0.217 mol-H2 g–1-biomass) and Tma100 (0.147 mol-H2 g–1-biomass) were higher than wild type (0.096 mol-H2 g–1 -biomass) with reduced rates of maltose utilization. …
The Demon Of Hope: Race, Disability And The White Researcher’S Complicity With Injustice, Gene Fellner
The Demon Of Hope: Race, Disability And The White Researcher’S Complicity With Injustice, Gene Fellner
Publications and Research
My ethical stance demands that my research mutually benefit all research
participants and that it should serve to reverse systemic policies of anti-blackness that
permeate the educational system in the United States. Through publications and similar
academic activities, however, my research advances my own career, but it is doubtful
that it significantly advances the trajectories of the students with whom I work. Indeed, it
could be argued that this imbalance in benefits advances the very system of white
dominance that I claim to contest. In this arts-based, auto-ethnographic study, I
document how, through the creation of pastel drawings and digital …

Exploring Diversity In The Workplace, Benjamin Olewiler
Exploring Diversity In The Workplace, Benjamin Olewiler
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
From its inception, the United States has been a country of immigrants. However, the recent trends of both legal and illegal immigration when combined with longevity have created a uniquely diverse population. This population diversity has introduced a dynamic human behavior challenge for supervisors and managers at workplaces across the nation. As larger percentages of minorities and women are entering the labor force and older generations stay at work longer, it is vital to be inclusive to all cultural backgrounds and generations within an organization. With the growth of women and minorities in the work force there is evidence that …

An Exploration Of Teacher Perceptions Of The Presence Of Cultural Reproduction In Two Middle Schools, Kaitlyn Montcrieff
An Exploration Of Teacher Perceptions Of The Presence Of Cultural Reproduction In Two Middle Schools, Kaitlyn Montcrieff
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Contemporary challenges to education pose threats that our current educational system remains unable to meet. With the prevalence of school shootings, rapid technological development, threats to mental health, superficial curriculum content, increased testing standards, and continued inequality in classrooms, now more than ever it is imperative to define, explore, and quantify the ways in which the system of education reproduces or replicates norms, values, behaviors, and practices and the effects these possibly have on students and teachers. The purpose of this research is to redefine 'cultural reproduction' into reproduction and replication in order to explore how the education system in …
