Bet You Can’T Eat Just One: Binge Eating Disorder Promotion In American Food Advertising, Debbie Danowski
Bet You Can’T Eat Just One: Binge Eating Disorder Promotion In American Food Advertising, Debbie Danowski
Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications
"Eat Like Andy“; "What Would You Do For A Klondike Bar?“ For well over a century, American food manufacturers have been competing for consumers’ attention through the use of catchy jingles, iconic characters and celebrities. At the same time, the products being advertised contain greater amounts of addictive ingredients, which encourage binge eating resulting in an unprecedented obesity epidemic. Combine this with the full-scale commercialization of the culture today“. Jhally identifies and the powerful impact of food advertisements becomes clear as does the need to evaluate these ads. As Kilbourne noted nearly a quarter of a century ago, the majority …
The Efficacy Of Curcumin And Oil Palm Phenolics, As Potential Antidepressants, On The Serotonin Pathway In A Neuronal Rat Cell Line, Melanie Hutchings
The Efficacy Of Curcumin And Oil Palm Phenolics, As Potential Antidepressants, On The Serotonin Pathway In A Neuronal Rat Cell Line, Melanie Hutchings
Wayne State University Theses
Depression can be experienced by individuals of all ages, and can result in alterations of mood, decreased ability to function, and fatigue. Current treatment involves pharmaceuticals, which can result in adverse side effects, and there is a risk of relapse. Nutraceuticals are of interest because they may be able to work as efficiently as current treatments, and will cause fewer adverse effects. Curcumin and oil palm phenolics (OPP) are polyphenolic compounds that exhibit beneficial properties, including anti-oxidant and anti-cancer, and may assist in the regulation of diabetes. For this experiment, we utilized a neuronal rat cell line, RN46A-B14, which exhibits …
From The Dirt Up: Layering Story, Place, And Environmentalism Within Three Picture Books, Lucinda Rowe
From The Dirt Up: Layering Story, Place, And Environmentalism Within Three Picture Books, Lucinda Rowe
Children's Book Writing and Illustrating (MFA) Theses
The world is changing before our eyes – species are going extinct, the amount of habitat available to wildlife has decreased, and children are spending less time outside than in the past. Through analyzing environmental ideology within early childhood education and children’s literature, I demonstrate that picture books can inspire nature conservation, appreciation, and stewardship by encouraging outdoor play and exploration. I compare picture books that successfully demonstrate eco-consciousness without being didactic, how my thesis fits within the current environmental movement, and how it helps stretch the definition of what is considered eco-writing.
This thesis consists of three illustrated picture …

Amae And Japanese Learners Of English : Their Strategies To Deal With Problems In Understanding In Conversations With Native And Non-Native Speakers, Emiko Kamiya
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of the study is to investigate how amae may affect Japanese learners of English when they are exposed to intercultural communication, so that educators can take advantage of the study’s findings to improve English education in Japan. Amae is a concept that a Japanese psychiatrist Takeo Doi introduced as a key to understanding the psychology of Japanese people. It is roughly translated as “dependence” but actually refers to a psychological disposition that is observed in specific patterns of behavior. Although the concept is frequently mentioned in studies of Japanese culture and society, not much is known about how …
"Farre Fetched And Deare Bought" : Cosmetics And Englishness 1570-1625, Marta Josie Schoel
"Farre Fetched And Deare Bought" : Cosmetics And Englishness 1570-1625, Marta Josie Schoel
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study examines cosmetic practice, discourse, and material to explore the ways in which face paint, often made from a mixture of foreign and domestic ingredients, challenges the emergent notion of a pure English identity. Within a broader discourse found in recipe books, anti-cosmetic treatises, public and private documents, and plays for public spectacle—as well as court masques—I examine how early modern performances use cosmetic mixtures as theatrical devices to stage, represent, and negotiate anxieties about England’s increased engagement with the nascent global economy. Worn on the permeable surface of the skin, cosmetic material, such as alum, mercury, and mummia, …
Getting Serious With Comedy : Power, Stand-Up Comedy, And American Public Life, Andrew Michael Cutrone
Getting Serious With Comedy : Power, Stand-Up Comedy, And American Public Life, Andrew Michael Cutrone
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This master’s thesis theorizes the political and cultural significance of stand-up comedy as an institution in the contemporary US public sphere, against the dominant perception that it is an enterprise severed from social consequence. Via a critical application of Ferguson’s theorization of power in The Reorder of Things (2012), in addition to a reading of stand-up comedy routines and related public discourse that utilizes feminist and queer of color theory, I show how subjective terrains of race, gender, and sexuality produce the discursive and political materials which organize stand-up discourse and performance in moments of “racial comedy,” “gender comedy,” and …
The Fiction Of Women In Contemporary American Literature : The Borderlands Of Intersectional Feminism, Postcolonial American Studies, And Creative Writing, Skye Anicca
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A collection of nine short stories entitled THE TROUBLE WITH BRIGHT GIRLS is unified by women’s diverse coming-of-age experiences in late twentieth century transnational America. The story collection relies on techniques that highlight dislocation—temporal skips and wide temporal frames, fragmented and recursive narratives, borrowed genres, absurd premise, anti-heroines and anti-epiphanies—which gesture toward collective human experiences while troubling notions of universal knowledge and values and resisting redemption or closure. The critical introduction situates the collection through the theoretical lens of intersectional feminism, informed by Gloria Anzaldúa’s concept of the borderlands, and in relation to field of multiethnic/transnational literature of the U.S. …

Over, Under And Around: Spanish Heritage Speakers' Production (And Avoidance) Of Subjunctive Mood, David Giancaspro
Over, Under And Around: Spanish Heritage Speakers' Production (And Avoidance) Of Subjunctive Mood, David Giancaspro
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
The present study explores the subjunctive mood production of 29 heritage speakers (HSs) of Spanish (17 advanced proficiency and 12 intermediate proficiency) and 14 Spanish-dominant controls (SDCs). All participants completed a Contextualized Elicited Production Task (CEPT), which tested their oral production of both lexically-selected (intensional) and contextually-selected (polarity) mood morphology in Spanish. Between-group analyses of the CEPT reveal that the HSs diverge significantly from the SDCs in subjunctive production, specifically by underproducing, overproducing, and avoiding subjunctive mood morphology. Despite these differences, however, the HSs still exhibited sensitivity to mood, producing significantly more subjunctive mood in expected subjunctive contexts than in …
History, Humanity, And The Literary Construction Of Haiti In ÉVelyne Trouillot’S Works, Jason Herbeck
History, Humanity, And The Literary Construction Of Haiti In ÉVelyne Trouillot’S Works, Jason Herbeck
World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations
Évelyne Trouillot’s novels, short stories, poetry, children’s stories, and play—not to mention her interviews, op. ed. pieces, and academic articles—introduce us to chapters of Haiti’s history spanning roughly two hundred and fifty years. From a plantation in the former French colony of Saint-Domingue during the 1750s to present-day, postearthquake Haiti, the experiences, trials, and tragically haunting memories of her characters serve to bring into focus countless rifts in the country’s complex and often conflicted past. Despite the turbulent time periods in which we discover these protagonists, and the resulting adversity to which they are prone, their struggles are not waged …
Mujeres Que Trabajan: La Economía Feminista En La Narrativa De Eider Rodríguez, Iker Gonzalez-Allende
Mujeres Que Trabajan: La Economía Feminista En La Narrativa De Eider Rodríguez, Iker Gonzalez-Allende
Spanish Language and Literature Papers
This article analyzes four contemporary short stories written by Basque author Eider Rodríguez that address women’s obstacles and oppressive conditions in the labor market. Using the theories of feminist economists such as Amaia Pérez Orozco, Cristina Carrasco Bengoa, and Lourdes Benería, I analyze how in these narratives women are forced to leave their paid jobs when becoming mothers, being reduced to a maternal and domestic identity, or they try to reconcile their professional and family life, thus suffering physical and mental exhaustion and emotional instability. The short stories also show the poor working conditions that women face, having to work …
Portraiture In Africa & The African Diaspora, Joshua I. Cohen
Portraiture In Africa & The African Diaspora, Joshua I. Cohen
Open Educational Resources
This course explores portraiture in Africa and the African diaspora, although it does not purport to be a comprehensive survey. The main focus is photography, but we will also consider portraiture in other mediums, such as sculpture, painting, and collage, as well as a range of departures from portrait conventions. The course is structured to allow students to think comparatively across contexts. We will particularly explore contemporary artists’ tendencies to make reference to earlier portrait forms.
"Remember Me, In Your Stories And In Your Songs": The Magical Journey To Celtic Cultural Resurrection And The Re-Discovery Of Self In Song Of The Sea, Wisarut Painark
"Remember Me, In Your Stories And In Your Songs": The Magical Journey To Celtic Cultural Resurrection And The Re-Discovery Of Self In Song Of The Sea, Wisarut Painark
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This study examines the deployment of magical realism along with cinematic techniques in Song of the Sea. Analysing the animated film as a cultural text in light of magical realism, it argues that the film intermingles two different worlds, the mundane and the fantastic, to provide audiences with a more inclusive view of reality. The existence of Celtic mythical beings, selkies, brought to life by magical realism, becomes the cornerstone in the protagonists' healing process as their interactions with these mythical beings gradually reshape their conception of reality. A new "reality" is, thus, employed to vex the protagonists' mind and …
Democratic Policing Before The Due Process Revolution, Sarah A. Seo
Democratic Policing Before The Due Process Revolution, Sarah A. Seo
Faculty Articles
According to prevailing interpretations of the Warren Court’s Due Process Revolution, the Supreme Court constitutionalized criminal procedure to constrain the discretion of individual officers. These narratives, however, fail to account for the Court’s decisions during that revolutionary period that enabled discretionary policing. Instead of beginning with the Warren Court, this Essay looks to the legal culture before the Due Process Revolution to provide a more coherent synthesis of the Court’s criminal procedure decisions. It reconstructs that culture by analyzing the prominent criminal law scholar Jerome Hall’s public lectures, Police and Law in a Democratic Society, which he delivered in 1952 …
A Phenomenology Of Flesh: Heidegger, The Body, And The Work Of Art, Trisha Famisaran
A Phenomenology Of Flesh: Heidegger, The Body, And The Work Of Art, Trisha Famisaran
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation begins by asking, what is the body, and how does one develop an understanding of the body? In this study, I aim to rework the notions of discursive practices and material phenomena, seeking to examine the relationship between the two in light of the work of art, so conceived within the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, in an attempt to deal with the question: “what is the body?” This dissertation avoids reifying certain normative descriptions of the body or constraining the matter of the body as strictly the effect of discursive power. I attempt a phenomenological observation about subjectivity …

Success Factors For Power Project Development Businesses In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kodjo Galevissi Afidegnon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite the financing gap in the sub-Saharan Africa power sector, private investors struggle to capitalize on the opportunity because of the high failure rate of power project development companies. Using the conceptual framework of the behavioral finance theory, this multiple case study was conducted to explore the strategies used by executives of 4 companies in sub-Saharan Africa who successfully developed power projects within the last 5 years. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and a review of government and institutions' websites. Yin's 5-phased cycle for analyzing case studies provided the guidelines for data analysis. Three themes emerged from data analysis: …

Attitudes Of Black Americans, Towards Police Misconduct In An Urban Area, Demetric Rayshawn Armstead
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Little is known about Black Americans' experience with and attitudes toward the police. For Black Americans and the police to improve their relationship, police need to understand the factors that influence Black Americans' perceptions. Asante's concept of Afrocentric theory assisted with exploring the attitudes of Black Americans about police misconduct in a Southeastern United States urban area. The purpose of the qualitative ethnographic study was to understand the attitudes of Black Americans towards the police and the factors that influence those perceptions. This study precisely addresses three main questions: (1) how has media coverage impacted Black Americans' perceptions of officer …

Qualitative Examination Of Historical Trauma And Grief Responses In The Oceti Sakowin, Anna E. Quinn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Past research regarding historical trauma in the Lakota, one of the three major groups of the Oceti Sakowin or Sioux, has contributed to the historical trauma theory, but gaps continue to exist. The purpose of the study was to examine the historical trauma experiences and grief responses of individuals who identify as Oceti Sakowin, specifically the Nakota and Dakota, including present experiences. Interpretive phenomenological analysis was the study's methodology and the conceptual framework of this research was historical trauma theory, which refers to the persistence of trauma and transmission of trauma from generation to generation. Participant interviews were conducted using …
Veteran Anger Dysregulation: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Help-Seeking Through Social Media, Deanna Bishop-Deaton
Veteran Anger Dysregulation: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Help-Seeking Through Social Media, Deanna Bishop-Deaton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In combat, anger becomes a new baseline and is promoted by peers as an acceptable means of militaristic motivation and coping with the atrocities of war. Unable to reconcile anger upon returning home, some veterans are forced to seek help via nontraditional paths. This interpretative phenomenological study explored the lived experience of male combat veterans who struggled with anger dysregulation issues and sought help from veteran peers on social media. Research questions were developed using the modal model of emotion as a guide for emotional dysregulation. Interviewed participants were invited to share lived experience of anger dysregulation, what help-seeking meant, …
Exploring Subcultural Perceptions That Influence Change Success Within A Hybrid Organization, Kevin Morgan Sorbello
Exploring Subcultural Perceptions That Influence Change Success Within A Hybrid Organization, Kevin Morgan Sorbello
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Global change-failure rates remain over 70%, despite over a half-century of research, theory development, and mitigation strategies. Although researchers studying the problem of change failure recognize that subcultural perceptions influence change success, especially in hybrid organizations where subcultural differences are more profound, the perceptions that predispose a subculture to support or resist organizational change remain relatively unknown. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to address the problem of the high cost of change failure by identifying perceptions that influence change success within a maritime organization. The study's conceptual framework was founded on the interpretive paradigm and social constructivist …

The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the nonmonetary reward strategies that nonprofit organizations' managers used to increase employee job satisfaction. The targeted population included nonprofit managers who had successfully implemented nonmonetary reward strategies to increase employee job satisfaction. Kalleberg's theory of job satisfaction was the conceptual framework for the study. The primary data collection method was semistructured, face-to-face interviews with 3 participants. Secondary data sources included review of company documents such as employee evaluations and …
Relationship Between Juvenile Offenders' Psychosocial Maturity And Experienced Parenting Style, Denesha Alexander
Relationship Between Juvenile Offenders' Psychosocial Maturity And Experienced Parenting Style, Denesha Alexander
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Juvenile delinquency continues to be a social ill with parents often being liable for their child's reprehensible behavior. In this nonexperimental, correlational study, the relationship between experienced parenting style and psychosocial maturity was examined in a sample of juvenile offenders receiving intensive in-home services. The General Theory of crime by Gottfredson and Hirshi provided the framework for the study along with parenting style typologies by Baumrind. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 60 11th grade juvenile offenders and their parent/caretakers using questionnaires. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the data. The Psychosocial Maturity Index was used to …
Increasing Clergy's Knowledge Of Mental Illness, Confidence, And Willingness To Refer, Suzan Mae Davis Merritt
Increasing Clergy's Knowledge Of Mental Illness, Confidence, And Willingness To Refer, Suzan Mae Davis Merritt
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over 43 million Americans suffer from mental illness annually with 40% seeking support from clergy (Polson & Rogers, 2007) who claim to be ineffectively prepared (Farrell & Goebert, 2008). This study investigated if mental health training administered to clergy would increase their knowledge of various mental disorders, alter their opinion regarding helpful resources, grow their self-confidence to help individuals experiencing mental health issues, and increase clergy's willingness to refer out. The theoretical basis for this research was attribution theory that attempts to explain social perceptions (Mannarini & Boffo, 2013) and the struggle individuals (i.e. clergy) have regarding the causation of …

The Latinx population has steadily increased in the United States with individuals immigrating from several Latin American countries. Latinx individuals have unique experiences and challenges in regards to immigration, acculturation, language, socioeconomic status, along with other factors. While research focused on psychotherapy with the Latinx community is limited, the studies available tend to focus on Latina female. The purpose of the study was to explore psychologists’ experiences working with Latino male clients, focusing on culture and gender roles. A qualitative method was used to interview six licensed psychologists who work with Latino males. The focus of the study was to …
