Defining Infidelity And Identifying Offending Spouses, Yabin Tang
Defining Infidelity And Identifying Offending Spouses, Yabin Tang
Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences
Research on infidelity has suffered from inconsistency in how infidelity has been operationalized across studies. This study was designed to advance methodological considerations for defining infidelity and identifying offending spouses. A subjective definition of infidelity was obtained from each respondent via both closed- and open-ended items. The open-ended responses were applied to explore the definition of infidelity. Additionally, an indirect questioning method was adopted to identify offending spouses according to their own subjective definitions of cheating and test the effectiveness of this approach relative to direct questioning for identifying offending spouses. Furthermore, gender differences in acknowledging infidelity through both direct …

Handling George Eliot’S Fiction, Peter J. Capuano
Handling George Eliot’S Fiction, Peter J. Capuano
Department of English: Faculty Publications
An argument that George Eliot was a novelist intellectually, philosophically, and aesthetically ahead of the majority of her peers thankfully needs no defense two hundred years after her birth. This lofty status, however, does not mean that Eliot was impervious to the cultural preoccupations of her time. Quite the contrary. A central contention of this essay is that Eliot, despite her imposing intellectual reputation, engaged with her culture’s popular interest in human hands in ways that profoundly affected her fiction. As I have argued elsewhere,1 the Victorians became highly cognizant of the physicality of their hands in large part …
Star Wars And Franchising: Emotional Ownership And Tensions In The Digital Age, Claire A. Pukszta
Star Wars And Franchising: Emotional Ownership And Tensions In The Digital Age, Claire A. Pukszta
Scripps Senior Theses
This paper unpacks the franchise system and the often-tumultuous relationship between Producers and Consumers, especially around the release of new films by the Producers. Star Wars represents far more than just a corporate product. There is a thriving ecosystem around pieces that have touched fans lives personally.
The reaction of fans to new media texts in existing franchises is in constant flux. Tumultuous emotions of betrayal come in waves from fans immediately following the release of new content. Specifically focusing on reception to prequel films, Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (1999) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), reveals …

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Ameloblastoma, the most clinically significant odontogenic epithelial tumor, is a locally-invasive and destructive lesion in the jawbones. However, the nature of this infiltrativeness and destructive behavior remains ill-understood. To address this, we established an in vitro three-dimensional (3D) co-culture system to simulate an amelobastoma disease model aimed at investigating the interactions between tumor cells and osteoblasts. Osteoblastic cell lines (KUSA/A1 and mc3T3-E1) and one stromal cell line (ST2) were separately co-seeded with ameloblastoma-derived cell line (AM-1) in a collagen scaffold (representing the extracellular bone matrix) and incubated with mineralization medium. Inununohistochemistry, double immunofluorescence and mineralization assay were performed. Only Am-1/KUsA-A1 …
Towards A Critical Game Based Pedagogy, Justin K. Egan
Towards A Critical Game Based Pedagogy, Justin K. Egan
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis outlines and examines core concepts of game-based learning as identified by James Paul Gee, and Kurt Squire, among other scholars. These findings are then connected to the contemporary, transformative threshold concepts of composition—as explored in Naming What We Know. This connection seeks to argue game-based pedagogy may be an invaluable tool for introducing critical perspectives to composition students in order to better equip them with critical thinking strategies and cultural critiques, while improving their writing skills. A theoretical framework is presented in the form of four “Pillars” of a Critical Game-Based Pedagogy: Literacy, Identity, Social Learning, and Multimodality—all …

The Dilemma Of Being Colin Kaepernick: An Examination Of The #Takeaknee Protest Using Heider's Balance Theory, Ashley A. Hanna Edwards, M. Elizabeth Thorpe
Iowa Journal of Communication
Colin Kaepernick and the #takeaknee protest have been simultaneously criticized and praised. Critics argue that Kaepernick disrespects veterans and the country, while supporters suggest he is an advocate for social justice in the mistreatment of people of color, particularly by law enforcement. Beyond partisan politics, this paper shows that critics and supporters alike are evaluating Kaepernick's protest on the basis of perceived consistency between his identity and behavior. Drawing on Heider 's balance theory, we argue that individuals who focus on Kaepernick 's identity as a professional athlete will be critical of the protest because it is out of balance …
The Paradox Of Patient Consent: A Feminist Perspective Of Illness And Healthcare, Kristen Cole
The Paradox Of Patient Consent: A Feminist Perspective Of Illness And Healthcare, Kristen Cole
Faculty Publications
Through autoethnographic analysis, I present my personal illness story as a case study in patient consent. In doing so, I explore the complexities that emerge at the intersection of gender and health, including issues of autonomy and choice. Specifically, I reflect on the ideological and systemic factors that contribute to a paradox of consent versus noncompliance in US healthcare contexts. Within this paradoxical binary, control is both persistent and illusive, which is a condition fueled by individualism, paternalistic antagonism, and medical colonization. As an alternative, I offer two viable options for facilitating patients’ agency in gendered health contexts, even under …
Living Sqélix: Defending The Land With Tribal Law, M. Jordan Thompson, Chelsea L.M. Colwyn
Living Sqélix: Defending The Land With Tribal Law, M. Jordan Thompson, Chelsea L.M. Colwyn
Connecticut Law Review
The Salish and Pend d’Oreille—known today as part of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) of the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana—have been part of the landscape of what is now Montana, Idaho, and eastern Washington ever since Coyote prepared the world for them. The Salish and Pend d’Oreille traditionally “managed” their “natural resources” by living in relationship with the land. European settlers directly and indirectly interfered with this relationship and imposed a very different view of natural resources management. Despite these relentless efforts, the Salish and Pend d’Oreille have survived the invasion of European colonization and made enormous …
Comparison Of Scrupulosity Self-Report In Mexico Versus The United States, Johanna E. Hidalgo
Comparison Of Scrupulosity Self-Report In Mexico Versus The United States, Johanna E. Hidalgo
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The prevalence rate for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is between 0.8% to 2%. Many of these individuals experience scrupulosity or religious obsessive-compulsive disorder. Although scrupulosity is a salient theme for those who suffer from OCD, there is limited amount of research on scrupulosity across cultures. Research is particularly limited in relation to individuals from Latin American countries, including Mexico. In response to this limitation, the purpose of this study is to determine if there is a significant difference in symptoms of scrupulosity in non-referred samples of college students from the U.S. and Mexico. Results indicated that scrupulosity is a valid and …
#Metoo And The Politics Of Collective Healing: Emotional Connection As Contestation, Allison Page, Jacquelyn Arcy
#Metoo And The Politics Of Collective Healing: Emotional Connection As Contestation, Allison Page, Jacquelyn Arcy
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Participants in the #MeToo movement on Twitter expressed emotions like rage, pain, and solidarity in their personal accounts of sexual violence. This article explores the digital circulation of these affects and considers how the outpouring of tweets about sexual harassment and abuse contribute to a feminist politics centered on collective healing. The particular emotions expressed in the #MeToo Twitter archive subvert the logics of quantification and visibility that undergird popular feminism and the attention economy, and produce an affective excess that works toward movement founder Tarana Burke’s original project of “mass healing.” At a moment wherein popular feminism emphasizes individual …

A Cope Study (2019): Exploring Publication Ethics Issues In The Arts, Humanities, And Social Sciences, Committee On Publication Ethics
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) is a non-statutory body which aims to provide practical publication ethics guidance for journal editors working in all research disciplines. COPE was first conceived by an editor of a specialist medical journal at the BMJ Publishing Group but has since grown to become a fully multidisciplinary organisation. As a result of perceptions within COPE that some members not in Science Technology and Medicine (STM) disciplines might not consider COPE to be as relevant, in early 2019 COPE, with the support of Routledge (part of the Taylor & Francis Group), commissioned primary research to better understand …
Multiethnic And Missional: God’S Heart For An Integrated And Diverse Church, Justin Saul Hiebert
Multiethnic And Missional: God’S Heart For An Integrated And Diverse Church, Justin Saul Hiebert
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The American church is largely segregated and homogenous. This has not only stunted the growth of the church but led to an ineffective and limited mission vision. The contemporary American church must reclaim the biblical mandate to be both ethnically diverse and missionally minded. Through a qualitative research methodology this research project focuses on creating a healthy and sustainable multiethnic identity and leadership structure. Through interviewing and visiting some of the leading multiethnic churches of the Central Valley of California, the researcher lays out a clear understanding and argument for multiethnic churches. This paper examines the book of Acts, interviewing …

Terms such as failure, mistakes, errors, obstacles, and struggle are used interchangeably, but each carry different connotations and discipline-specific meanings. Reactions to experiencing a failure can range as well, from being seen as having educative value to be debilitating. These reactions are based on criteria like environment, prior experiences and individual characteristics, to name a few. The purpose of this chapter is to synthesize and clarify how these terms are articulated and utilized in research studies and commentaries published between 1970 and 2017. Through a systematic literature review, we will discuss similarities and differences in how researchers defined these terms, …

Democratic Policing Before The Due Process Revolution, Sarah Seo
Democratic Policing Before The Due Process Revolution, Sarah Seo
Faculty Scholarship
According to prevailing interpretations of the Warren Court’s Due Process Revolution, the Supreme Court constitutionalized criminal procedure to constrain the discretion of individual officers. These narratives, however, fail to account for the Court’s decisions during that revolutionary period that enabled discretionary policing. Instead of beginning with the Warren Court, this Essay looks to the legal culture before the Due Process Revolution to provide a more coherent synthesis of the Court’s criminal procedure decisions. It reconstructs that culture by analyzing the prominent criminal law scholar Jerome Hall’s public lectures, Police and Law in a Democratic Society, which he delivered in 1952 …
Promoting Equality Through Empirical Desert, Ilya Rudyak
Promoting Equality Through Empirical Desert, Ilya Rudyak
Texas A&M Law Review
According to empirical desert theory, good utilitarian grounds exist for distributing criminal punishment pursuant to the (retributive) intuitions of the lay community on criminal liability. This theory’s insights, based on original empirical research and informed by social science, have significantly influenced contemporary criminal law theory. Yet, ostensibly, the theory is hampered by serious limitations, which may have obstructed its progress and its potential to guide criminal justice reform. Chief among them: it draws from community intuitions, and community intuitions—as the theory acknowledges—are sometimes immoral. In addition to these “immorality objections,” (commonly illustrated by alluding to the antebellum South and Nazi …

Exploring Age-Related Metamemory Differences Using Modified Brier Scores And Hierarchical Clustering, Chelsea Parlett-Pelleriti, Grace C. Lin, Masha R. Jones, Erik Linstead, Susanne M. Jaeggi
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Older adults (OAs) typically experience memory failures as they age. However, with some exceptions, studies of OAs’ ability to assess their own memory functions—Metamemory (MM)— find little evidence that this function is susceptible to age-related decline. Our study examines OAs’ and young adults’ (YAs) MM performance and strategy use. Groups of YAs (N = 138) and OAs (N = 79) performed a MM task that required participants to place bets on how likely they were to remember words in a list. Our analytical approach includes hierarchical clustering, and we introduce a new measure of MM—the modified Brier—in order to adjust …
Understanding The Politics Of Knowledge And How It Unfolds In The United States: The Mexican American Studies Program, And The Ethnic Studies Ban In Tucson Az, Jorge Rodriguez
Education Faculty Articles and Research
The increasingly diverse demographics can no longer submit to the old paradigms and Eurocentric views behind westernized conceptions of learning and instruction (Grande, 2015). Scholars point to disengagement of marginalized communities of color from the schooling environment and express concerns over national curricula as being non-relevant to the historical and social-cultural realities of these communities in the United States (Ladson-Billings, 1995, 2009). Within this paradigm, notions of success are often measured by cognitive benchmarks like grades, GPA, graduation rates, and standardized test scores. By 2044, more than half of all Americans are projected to belong to a minority group, and, …
Containing The Jeremiad: Understanding Paradigms Of Anxiety In Global Climate Change Experience, Brian Glaser
Containing The Jeremiad: Understanding Paradigms Of Anxiety In Global Climate Change Experience, Brian Glaser
English Faculty Articles and Research
This essay uses Bion’s concept of “containing” to read the psychological dynamics of jeremiads about global climate change, arguing that their structure reveals a strategy of communication that may be useful for more broadly raising awareness about this challenging state of the planet. More specifically, I argue that contemporary global climate change jeremiads have a structure that first elicits alarm and then moves to discuss solutions, and that this structure may be beneficial to those who are awakening to the reality of global climate change by rendering anxiety bearable and therefore open to purposive and creative response.
Trajectories In The Evolution Of Mormon Studies On Faith And Science, Steven L. Peck
Trajectories In The Evolution Of Mormon Studies On Faith And Science, Steven L. Peck
Mormon Studies Review
The relationship between science and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been and continues to be a complicated story. Concerns and differing perspectives about science provided the underlying context for a number of formal and informal institutional directions taken by the church in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-centuries. Often, these were influenced by differences in opinion about science among various leaders of the church. Areas in which science played a role include: the relationship between secular and church education, a battleground in framing doctrinal questions about creation—including syncretic influence from the rise of Christian fundamentalism and …
