The Conclusion From One Million Tonnes Of Experience In Galvanizing Steel – Lmac Is Not A Primary Instigator Of Cracking, C Leighfield, Mn James Jan 2019

The Conclusion From One Million Tonnes Of Experience In Galvanizing Steel – Lmac Is Not A Primary Instigator Of Cracking, C Leighfield, Mn James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In the period 2000–2006 occasional instances of serious service cracking in galvanized structural steelwork were detected. At the time it was suggested that the cracks had occurred during the galvanizing process, been covered up by the zinc coating and then opened up during service. Several significant European-wide research projects were initiated to identify and understand the mechanisms that control LMAC during hot dip galvanizing. However, experience in the UK has shown that the frequency of cracking of structural steel during galvanizing is very low, and that when it does occur it is almost invariably due to known factors that influence …

Fatigue Life Prediction For Rotary Friction Welded Ti-6al-4v Under Variable Amplitude Fatigue Loading, Der Merwe Hb Van, Mn James, Dg Hattingh, W Rall

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The present paper considers variable amplitude fatigue lifing for rotary friction welds in Grade 23 6Al-4V titanium alloy. The work reported in this paper aimed firstly at optimising the parameters necessary to successfully rotary weld 6 mm diameter hourglass specimens of Ti-6Al-4V and, secondly, at generating CA stress-life (S-N) fatigue data to underpin a VA fatigue life prediction that was then experimentally verified against the results obtained from VA fatigue testing using an 3200 turning point sequence extracted from the simulated aircraft load spectrum mini-FALSTAFF (a modified Fighter Aircraft Loading Standard for Fatigue). It was found that the real damage …

Characterisation Of Fatigue Crack Growth Using The Cjp Model Of Crack Tip Fields Or Plastic Ctod, Mn James, Jm Vasco-Olmo, Fa Díaz, Fv Antunes, Y Bing, Y Huang

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper provides an update on the current status of work that has been done to validate the CJP model of crack tip stresses and also summarises some findings from linked work that has used DIC to determine the range of plastic crack tip opening displacement as a correlator of fatigue crack growth rate. The paper considers several ways of calculating an effective range of stress intensity factor that have been proposed in various papers, as the preferred option is not yet fully clear. It further highlights the potential value, in terms of elucidating the mechanisms involved in plasticity-induced crack …

School of Nursing and Midwifery

This paper presents the final phase of a national project exploring grading of practice in programmes leading to registration as a midwife in the United Kingdom. The aim was to develop a generic framework for grading practice, enhancing standardisation while enabling flexibility in application of current and new educational standards. A mixed method on-line survey considered existing practice assessment tools, factors contributing to robust and reliable assessment and perceptions of two assessment tools developed by the research team: a ‘Lexicon Framework’ and ‘Rubric’, which were tested through scenarios. Participants included 170 midwifery and nursing academics, clinicians and students, representing 20 …

Non-invasive coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography-derived fractional flow reserve (cFFR) is an emergent approach to determine the functional relevance of obstructive coronary lesions. Its feasibility and diagnostic performance has been reported in several studies. It is unclear if differences in sensitivity and specificity between these studies are due to study design, population, or "computational methodology." We evaluate the diagnostic performance of four different computational workflows for the prediction of cFFR using a limited data set of 10 patients, three based on reduced-order modelling and one based on a 3D rigid-wall model. The results for three of these methodologies yield similar …

IntroductionAcute pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease of the pancreas with high risk of developing multiorgan failure and death. There are no effective pharmacological interventions used in current clinical practice. Maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance is the mainstay of supportive management. Goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) has been shown to decrease morbidity and mortality in surgical conditions with systemic inflammatory response. There is currently no randomised controlled trial (RCT) investigating the role of GDFT based on cardiac output parameters in patients with acute pancreatitis in the ward setting. A feasibility trial was designed to determine patient and clinician support for recruitment into …

Would A Robot Trust You? Developmental Robotics Model Of Trust And Theory Of Mind, S Vinanzi, M Patacchiola, A Chella, A Cangelosi Jan 2019

Would A Robot Trust You? Developmental Robotics Model Of Trust And Theory Of Mind, S Vinanzi, M Patacchiola, A Chella, A Cangelosi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Trust is a critical issue in human-robot interaction: as robotic systems gain complexity, it becomes crucial for them to be able to blend in our society by maximizing their acceptability and reliability. Various studies have examined how trust is attributed by people to robots, but less have investigated the opposite scenario, where a robot is the trustor and a human is the trustee. The ability for an agent to evaluate the trustworthiness of its sources of information is particularly useful in joint task situations where people and robots must collaborate to reach shared goals. We propose an artificial cognitive architecture …

Virtual Source Method Simulation Of Progressive Water Waves, O Al-Tameemi, Di Graham, K Langfeld Jan 2019

Virtual Source Method Simulation Of Progressive Water Waves, O Al-Tameemi, Di Graham, K Langfeld

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The virtual source method (VSM) has been developed to simulate water waves based upon the solution of Laplace’s equation for the velocity potential integral equations with full nonlinear surface conditions. The basis of the method is the use of specific Green’s functions for a rectangular ‘virtual domain’ which is an extension of the physical domain. The solution variables are frequency components of the velocity potential at the upper virtual boundary and these are found by specifying appropriate conditions on the physical boundaries (i.e. wavemaker, walls and wave surfaces). The authors have shown that the model successfully simulates both linear and …

Y2O3 Optical Constants Between 5 Nm And 50 Nm, Joseph B. Muhlestein, Benjamin D. Smith, Margaret Miles, Stephanie M. Thomas, Anthony Willey, David D. Allred, R. Steven Turley

Faculty Publications

We report optical constants of e-beam evaporated yttrium oxide Y2O3 thin films as determined from angle-dependent reflectance measurements at wavelengths from 5 to 50 nm. Samples were measured using synchrotron radiation at the Advanced Light Source. The experimental reflectance data were fit to obtain values for the index of refraction and thin film roughness. We compare our computed constants with those of previous researchers and those computed using the independent atom approximation from the CXRO website. We found that the index of refraction near 36 nm is much lower than previous data from Tomiki as reported by …

From Ocean Sprawl To Blue-Green Infrastructure – A Uk Perspective On An Issue Of Global Significance, Ally J. Evans, Louise B. Firth, Stephen J. Hawkins, Alice E. Hall, Joseph E. Ironside, Richard C. Thompson, Pippa J. Moore

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Artificial structures are proliferating in the marine environment, resulting in ‘ocean sprawl’. In light of the potential environmental impacts of this, such as habitat loss and alteration, it is becoming increasingly important to incorporate ecologically-sensitive design into artificial marine structures. The principles of eco-engineering and green infrastructure are embedded in urban planning practice for terrestrial and freshwater development projects. In marine planning, however, eco-engineering of blue-green infrastructure remains an emerging concept. This note provides a UK perspective on the progress towards uptake of eco-engineering approaches for enhancing biodiversity on artificial marine structures. We emphasise that, despite a clear ‘policy pull’ …

Experimental Study Of Wave Loads On A Small Vehicle In Close Proximity To A Large Vessel, Nan Xie, Gregorio Iglesias, M. Hann, R. Pemberton, D. Greaves

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Operations involving the launch or recovery of a smaller vessel from a larger one are extremely dangerous in high sea states and, therefore, they are normally carried out in low to moderate sea states. However, this can be severely restrictive and in some situations, carrying out such operations in high sea states is unavoidable. Here we report on a detailed investigation of the interaction between two vessels of different size in order to characterise their hydrodynamic interaction under different conditions and to provide insight for operational purposes. Model experiments were conducted to investigate the hydrodynamic interaction between two vessels in …

Accurate Eye Center Localization Via Hierarchical Adaptive Convolution, H Cai, B Liu, Z Ju, S Thill, T Belpaeme, B Vanderborght, H Liu

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Eye center localization has been an active research topic for decades due to its important biological properties, which indicates human's visual focus of attention. However, accurate eye center localization still remains challenging due to the high degree appearance variation caused by different kinds of viewing angles, illumination conditions, occlusions and head pose. This paper proposes a hierarchical adaptive convolution method (HAC) to localize the eye center accurately while consuming low computational cost. It mainly utilizes the dramatic illumination changes between the iris and sclera. More specifically, novel hierarchical kernels are designed to convolute the eye images and a differential operation …

Teasing Apart The Impact Of Illness And Iq On Functional Neuroimaging Findings In Schizophrenia, S Graham, Tm Oh, V Manning, J Jiang, Ib Yeh, S Kang, Pj Mckenna

Peninsula Medical School

Schizophrenia is a major psychiatric disorder associated with cognitive impairment. Functional brain imaging (fMRI) studies of schizophrenia patients reveal a complex pattern of brain differences in the prefrontal cortex. Both decreased (hypofrontality) and increased (hyperfrontality) activity have been reported in patients – inconsistencies that this paper argues could be explained by differences in IQ between patients and healthy controls. This study demonstrates a novel method to tease apart IQ and schizophrenia effects on brain activity. Twelve schizophrenia patients were matched to twelve healthy controls matched to patients’ estimated (premorbid) IQ before their illness, and twelve healthy controls matched to patients’ …

Trichoderma species are known for their ability to produce lytic enzymes, such as exoglucanases, endoglucanases, chitinases, and proteases, which play important roles in cell wall degradation of phytopathogens. β-glucanases play crucial roles in the morphogenetic-morphological process during the development and differentiation processes in Trichoderma species, which have β-glucans as the primary components of their cell walls. Despite the importance of glucanases in the mycoparasitism of Trichoderma spp., only a few functional analysis studies have been conducted on glucanases. In the present study, we used a functional genomics approach to investigate the functional role of the gluc31 gene, which encodes an …

Seagrass Soil Archives Reveal Centennial-Scale Metal Smelter Contamination While Acting As Natural Filters, Anna Lafratta, O Serrano, Pere Masque, Miguel Mateo, Milena Fernandes, Sam Gaylard, Paul Lavery

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia hosts the world's largest single stream Pb-Zn smelter, which has caused environmental and health issues related to elevated metal concentrations in the surrounding environment. The area also has extensive seagrass meadows, occupying >4000 km2. We reconstructed the fluxes of heavy metals over the last ~3000 years through a multi-parameter study of the soil archives formed by the seagrass Posidonia australis. Pb, Zn and Cd concentrations increased up to 9-fold following the onset of smelter operations in the 1880s, and the stable Pb isotopic signatures confirmed the smelter has been the main …

In May of 2018, the University of Denver repeated on-road optical remote sensing measurements at two locations in Lynwood, CA. Lynwood area vehicle tailpipe emissions were first surveyed in 1989 and 1991 because the area suffered with a large number of carbon monoxide (CO) air quality violations. These new measurements allow for the estimation of fuel specific CO and total hydrocarbon (HC) emissions reductions, changes in the longevity of emission-control components, and the prevalence of high emitters in the current fleet.

Since 1989 CO emissions decreased approximately factors of 10 (120 ± 8 to 12.3 ± 0.2 gCO/kg of fuel) …
