Multi-View Cluster Analysis With Incomplete Data To Understand Treatment Effects, Guoqing Chao, Jiangwen Sun, Jin Lu, An-Li Wang, Daniel D. Langleben, Chiang-Shan Li, Jinbo Bi Jan 2019

Multi-View Cluster Analysis With Incomplete Data To Understand Treatment Effects, Guoqing Chao, Jiangwen Sun, Jin Lu, An-Li Wang, Daniel D. Langleben, Chiang-Shan Li, Jinbo Bi

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Multi-view cluster analysis, as a popular granular computing method, aims to partition sample subjects into consistent clusters across different views in which the subjects are characterized. Frequently, data entries can be missing from some of the views. The latest multi-view co-clustering methods cannot effectively deal with incomplete data, especially when there are mixed patterns of missing values. We propose an enhanced formulation for a family of multi-view co-clustering methods to cope with the missing data problem by introducing an indicator matrix whose elements indicate which data entries are observed and assessing cluster validity only on observed entries. In comparison with …

The Relationship Between An Alternative Form Of Cognitive Reflection Test And Intertemporal Choice, Jiuqing Cheng, Cassidy Janssen Jan 2019

The Relationship Between An Alternative Form Of Cognitive Reflection Test And Intertemporal Choice, Jiuqing Cheng, Cassidy Janssen

Faculty Work

The cognitive reflection test (CRT) has been popular because it has demonstrated a good predictive validity of a variety of biases in judgment and decision making. Thomson and Oppenheimer (2016) further developed a second version of the cognitive reflection test, CRT-2. Although CRT-2 has been found to be associated with several biases in judgment and decision making, its relationship with intertemporal choice remains unclear. Previous studies have shown that intertemporal choice characterizes the competition between intuition and reflection, and can be predicted by the original CRT. To further validate CRT-2, the present study tests the relationship between CRT-2 and intertemporal …

The Effect Of Cold Stratification And Perigynia Removal On The Germination Of Three Prairie Carex Species, Christina M. Boeck Crew Jan 2019

The Effect Of Cold Stratification And Perigynia Removal On The Germination Of Three Prairie Carex Species, Christina M. Boeck Crew

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Sedges (Carex spp. Linneaus. [Cyperaceae]) are a major component of Midwestern U.S. tallgrass prairie and prairie wetland plant communities, yet they are often lacking in restoration projects because they can be difficult to germinate. Cold-wet stratification and perigynia removal have been shown to increase germination in some Carex species. The germination response of 3 native species, plains oval or shortbeak sedge (C. brevior (Dewey) Mack.), field oval or troublesome sedge (C. molesta Mack.), and prairie or Bicknell’s sedge (C. bicknellii Britton.), was tested to cold-wet stratification (28d) and perigynia removal in stored seed (10 months). Seed treatments …

Code Readability: A Proposal On The Effects Of Psychology And Comprehension In Software Development And Maintenance, Ethan Brian Sankey Jan 2019

Code Readability: A Proposal On The Effects Of Psychology And Comprehension In Software Development And Maintenance, Ethan Brian Sankey

Honors Program Theses

Because of the diversity and complexity of the hundreds of coding languages out there, code readability has become more and more of an issue as the years have passed and as the popularity of technology that required built-in computers has increased. With so many different formats, styles, and restrictions on each language, even a developer with experience in only a few common languages may have trouble remembering which language allows for certain indentation, which language requires variable instantiation, which language requires return statements at the end of functions. While I can appreciate the diversity and efficiency that having many different …

Antidiscrimination Ordinances In Northwest Indiana: An Event-History Analysis Of Municipal Policies Since 1992, James Paul Old, Kimberly Palmer Fields Jan 2019

Antidiscrimination Ordinances In Northwest Indiana: An Event-History Analysis Of Municipal Policies Since 1992, James Paul Old, Kimberly Palmer Fields

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

In recent years, municipalities throughout Indiana have passed antidiscrimination ordinances that protect the rights of individuals who belong to racial, ethnic, or sexual minorities. Political scientists have proposed competing theories of policy-adoption processes that suggest a number of internal factors (such as socioeconomic characteristics, governmental capacity, or issue salience) or external factors (such as mandates/incentives from higher-level governments or influence from neighboring communities) as predictors of policy adoption; however, most existing studies focus on state-level processes, and those that focus on municipalities consider only large cities in different states. To more clearly distinguish between state-level effects and local effects, this …

Measures Of Challenging And Excitatory Parenting Behavior As Predictors Of Later Child Self-Regulation, Zachary Havlin

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

Challenging and excitatory parenting behaviors play an important role in children’s development, particularly in regard to the development of selfregulation; however, no well-established measures of parent-child interactions exist that record such behaviors. In the current study, I compare two recently developed coding systems that intend to address this issue: the Risky Interaction Support and Challenging (RISC) and Marbach coding systems. A subset of videos from the New Parents Project (NPP) data set at 12 and 18 months was coded using both scales, then a factor analysis was conducted for each scale. Regressions were conducted to look at the predictive power …

The Historical Hazards Of Finding Aids, Gregory Wiedeman Jan 2019

The Historical Hazards Of Finding Aids, Gregory Wiedeman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Archivists have traditionally understood access through finding aids, assuming that—through creating them—they are effectively providing access to archival materials. This article is a history of finding aids in American archival practice that demonstrates how finding aids have negatively colored how archivists have understood access. It shows how finding aids were originally a compromise between resource constraints and the more familiar access that users expected, how a discourse centered on finding aids hindered the standardization of archival description as data, and how the characteristics of finding aids as tools framed and negatively impacted the Encoded Archival Description (EAD) standard. It questions …

Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) is, by definition, a process that occurs in any system where electrical energy is transmitted from a power source to a load without the connection of electrical conductors. WPT is the driving technology that will enable the next stage in the current consumer electronics revolution, including battery-less sensors, passive RF identification (RFID), passive wireless sensors, the Internet of Things and 5G, and machine-to-machine solutions. WPT-enabled devices can be powered by harvesting energy from the surroundings, including electromagnetic (EM) energy, leading to a new communication networks paradigm, the Wirelessly Powered Networks.

Drug Repositioning Based On Bounded Nuclear Norm Regularization, Mengyun Yang, Huimin Lao, Yaohang Li, Jianxin Wang Jan 2019

Drug Repositioning Based On Bounded Nuclear Norm Regularization, Mengyun Yang, Huimin Lao, Yaohang Li, Jianxin Wang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Motivation: Computational drug repositioning is a cost-effective strategy to identify novel indications for existing drugs. Drug repositioning is often modeled as a recommendation system problem. Taking advantage of the known drug–disease associations, the objective of the recommendation system is to identify new treatments by filling out the unknown entries in the drug–disease association matrix, which is known as matrix completion. Underpinned by the fact that common molecular pathways contribute to many different diseases, the recommendation system assumes that the underlying latent factors determining drug–disease associations are highly correlated. In other words, the drug–disease matrix to be completed is low-rank. Accordingly, …

Waiting For A Queer Change: Gender Identity Through Performative Waiting And The Boudoir Chronotope In Call Me By Your Name, Gregory R. Clarke Jan 2019

Waiting For A Queer Change: Gender Identity Through Performative Waiting And The Boudoir Chronotope In Call Me By Your Name, Gregory R. Clarke

Theses : Honours

This thesis analyses André Aciman’s novel, Call Me By Your Name (2007), in light of its portrayal of a nineteen-eighties gay relationship that is not entirely defined by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Rather than the abjection associated with illness and death, I focus on the narrative’s evocation of pleasure and love for its protagonists, Elio and Oliver, who do not identify as exclusively gay. My argument focuses on Elio exemplifying and undermining Roland Barthes’ trope of the lover-who-waits as historically ‘feminine’ in A Lover’s Discourse. In doing so, I demonstrate how Barthes’s work prefigures Judith Butler’s gender performativity theory.

First, …

Intrinsic Variations In Geometric Properties Of Nonlinear Equivalent Strut Models For Infill-Rc Frames, Bruna Kirch Nienkotter Rocha Jan 2019

Intrinsic Variations In Geometric Properties Of Nonlinear Equivalent Strut Models For Infill-Rc Frames, Bruna Kirch Nienkotter Rocha

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Reinforced concrete frames infilled with unreinforced masonry are commonly used in structures worldwide. The interaction between the frame and the infill panel is usually ignored in engineering practice, and the masonry infill is not considered as a structural element. However, observations made after the occurrence of strong earthquakes have shown that the bare frame and infill-frame behave differently when subjected to in-plane lateral loads. Extensive research has been conducted on the behaviour of infill-frames when laterally loaded. This research focuses on the analysis of infill-frames using the equivalent strut modelling method, whereby an infill-frame is simplified, and the infill panel …

Who Should Be Invited To My Party: A Size-Constrained K-Core Problem In Social Networks, Yu-Liang Ma, Ye Yuan, Feida Zhu, Guo-Ren Wang, Jing Xiao, Jian-Zong Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we investigate the problem of a size-constrained k-core group query (SCCGQ) in social networks, taking both user closeness and network topology into consideration. More specifically, SCCGQ intends to find a group of h users that has the highest social closeness while being a k-core. SCCGQ can be widely applied to event planning, task assignment, social analysis, and many other fields. In contrast to existing work on the k-core detection problem, which aims to find a k-core in a social network, SCCGQ not only focuses on k-core detection but also takes size constraints into consideration. Although the conventional …

Template-Based Math Word Problem Solvers With Recursive Neural Networks, Lei Wang, Dongxiang Zhang, Jipeng Zhang, Xing Xu, Lianli Gao, Bing Tian Dai, Heng Tao Shen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The design of automatic solvers to arithmetic math word problems has attracted considerable attention in recent years and a large number of datasets and methods have been published. Among them, Math23K is the largest data corpus that is very helpful to evaluate the generality and robustness of a proposed solution. The best performer in Math23K is a seq2seq model based on LSTM to generate the math expression. However, the model suffers from performance degradation in large space of target expressions. In this paper, we propose a template-based solution based on recursive neural network for math expression construction. More specifically, we …
