Learning Frame-Level Classifiers For Video-Based Real-Time Assessment Of Stroke Rehabilitation Exercises From Weakly Annotated Datasets, Ana Rita Cóias, Min Hun Lee, Alexandre Bernardino, Asim Smailagic, Mariana Mateus, David Fernandes, Sofia Trapola
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Autonomous rehabilitation support solutions, such as virtual coaches, should provide real-time feedback to improve motor function and maintain patient engagement. However, fully annotated dataset collection for real-time exercise assessment is time-consuming and costly, posing a barrier to evaluating proposed methods. In this work, we present a novel framework that learns a frame-level classifier using weakly annotated videos for real-time assessment of compensatory motions in stroke rehabilitation exercises by generating pseudo-labels at a frame level. We consider three approaches: 1) a baseline approach that uses a source dataset to train a frame-level classifier, 2) a transfer learning approach that uses target …

Inference-Time Gaze Refinement For Micro-Expression Recognition: Enhancing Event-Based Eye Tracking With Motion-Aware Post-Processing, Panahetipola Mudiyanselage Nuwan Bandara, Thivya Kandappu, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Event-based eye tracking holds significant promise for fine-grained cognitive state inference, offering high temporal resolution and robustness to motion artifacts, critical features for decoding subtle mental states such as attention, confusion, or fatigue. In this work, we introduce a model-agnostic, inference-time refinement framework designed to enhance the output of existing event-based gaze estimation models without modifying their architecture or requiring retraining. Our method comprises two key post-processing modules: (i) Motion-Aware Median Filtering, which suppresses blink-induced spikes while preserving natural gaze dynamics, and (ii) Optical Flow-Based Local Refinement, which aligns gaze predictions with cumulative event motion to reduce spatial jitter and …

A Lifespan Perspective On Positive Affect Fluctuations On Purpose In Life: Findings From A 9-Year Longitudinal Study, Jonathan L. Chia, Verity Y. Q. Lua, Andree Hartanto
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Existing research has examined how static or average levels of positive affect (PA) influence purpose in life (PIL), but theoretical work suggests PA fluctuations may also play a role, potentially undermining PIL, especially in older adulthood. To this end, the present study examined the longitudinal association of PA fluctuations on PIL and the moderating role of age among 1,294 midlife and older adults in the United States, over a 9-year period (between 2004 and 2014). Results revealed a conditional effect of PA fluctuations on PIL – particularly among older individuals, and greater PA fluctuations were associated with a poorer sense …
Full Circle: Historiography, Missiology, And Theology In Lin Yutang’S From Pagan To Christian, Teng-Kuan Ng
Full Circle: Historiography, Missiology, And Theology In Lin Yutang’S From Pagan To Christian, Teng-Kuan Ng
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Lin Yutang (1895–1976) is renowned for bridging the Chinese and Western worlds through his prolific writings, but the vital role of religion in his intercultural endeavors remains underappreciated. This article situates his seminal work of religious reflection, From Pagan to Christian (1959), within the context of World Christianity, defined as both movement and method. Lin’s departure from the Christianity of his youth into Chinese religions—and back again to the church in his later years—presents timely insights for the study of religious change and pluralism in global modernity. Analyzing the text’s decolonizing, dialogical, and polyphonic dimensions, this article brings Lin’s spiritual …
Revealing Building Operating Carbon Dynamics For Multiple Cities, Winston Yap, Abraham Noah Wu, Clayton Miller, Filip Biljecki
Revealing Building Operating Carbon Dynamics For Multiple Cities, Winston Yap, Abraham Noah Wu, Clayton Miller, Filip Biljecki
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Achieving carbon neutrality is a critical yet elusive goal for many cities, hindered by limited understanding of the relationship between building emissions and their surroundings. To address this challenge, we present a generalizable open science framework that integrates building energy-consumption data, multi-modal geospatial inputs and graph deep learning to quantify building operating emissions and their links to urban form and socio-economic factors. Applying this approach to five cities with diverse climates and planning contexts—Melbourne, New York City (Manhattan), Seattle, Singapore and Washington DC—we demonstrate that our models explain 78.4% of the variation in building operating carbon emissions across cities, achieving …
Learning Regulatory Dna-Sequence Code Of Epigenetic Events Using Deep Neural Networks, Sanjeeva Reddy Dodlapati
Learning Regulatory Dna-Sequence Code Of Epigenetic Events Using Deep Neural Networks, Sanjeeva Reddy Dodlapati
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Epigenetic events, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications, arise from a complex interplay among genomic sequence, chromatin-remodeling factors, and environmental cues. These regulatory mechanisms can induce changes in gene expression without altering the underlying DNA sequence, playing critical roles in development, disease, and cellular differentiation. Among these events, DNA methylation is frequently profiled using bisulfite sequencing (e.g., whole-genome bisulfite sequencing [WGBS], reduced representation bisulfite sequencing [RRBS]). However, predictive modeling of epigenetic states—including methylation patterns and regulatory variant effects—remains challenging due to data sparsity, label noise, and limited uncertainty estimation in current deep learning approaches. This dissertation addresses these issues …

Examining Access, Outcomes, And The Experiences Of Black Women: Improving Racial Equity In Adult Drug Treatment Court, Laquana N. Askew
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Black women face compounded systemic barriers in the criminal legal system because of oppression and erasure of their racial and gendered identities. Although Adult Drug Treatment Courts (DTCs) are designed to divert individuals with substance use disorders from incarceration with the alternative of therapeutic intervention, Black women, compared to their Black male and White female counterparts, remain underrepresented and experience less favorable outcomes despite their increased presence in the criminal legal system due to drug related offenses. Using an intersectional Black Feminist framework, the current study critically examines the processes and structural barriers that contribute to Black women’s limited access …

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The production of cement ranks as a major source of global CO₂ emissions because of the high energy requirements needed to create clinker. The construction industry is actively seeking ways to reduce its carbon footprint. Utilizing industrial waste materials to partially replace cement can lower emissions. This research evaluates a ternary binder system which uses Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) and Glass Powder (GP) to replace a portion of Type IL (Portland Limestone) cement. The mixes were made with a fixed water-to-binder ratio of 0.44 and contained 15% GP by mass while the CKD content ranged from 0% to 10%. The …
Endotherm Energetics Under Environmental And Physiological Constraints, Zachary Andrew David
Endotherm Energetics Under Environmental And Physiological Constraints, Zachary Andrew David
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Metabolic rate governs how animals allocate energy toward maintenance, activity, growth, and reproduction, linking physiology to environmental context. This dissertation investigates how two endothermic mammals regulate metabolic rate in response to environmental variability, focusing on thermoregulatory flexibility and physiological constraints. Using flow-through respirometry, I measured resting metabolic rates (RMRs) in two complementary systems: tropical bears housed in semi-natural outdoor enclosures and marsh rice rats (Oryzomys palustris) exposed to controlled thermal treatments. Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) exhibited unexpectedly low mass-specific metabolic rates even under high ambient temperatures, yet their RMR increased with temperature, suggesting proximity to their …

The unique experiences of people who identify with a gender beyond the binary paradigm dominant in the Global West are not well understood. The literature provides little insight into the experiences and perspectives of these individuals in a variety of contexts, including in their workplaces. As various social movements collide, they bring amplified attention to the mental health of marginalized communities and to workers, as well as the dynamics of modern work environments, and the specific needs of certain individuals doing certain types of work. The current study explored the experiences of gender non-binary individuals (GNI) working as helper-educators engaged …
Computational Investigation Of Energetic Materials: Influence Of Electronic And Steric Properties On Sensitivity And Decomposition Mechanisms, Elizabeth Ruth Zengel
Computational Investigation Of Energetic Materials: Influence Of Electronic And Steric Properties On Sensitivity And Decomposition Mechanisms, Elizabeth Ruth Zengel
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Developing novel high energy density materials (HEDMs) requires knowledge of the causes and mechanisms of detonation. These chemical events are almost instantaneous and involve the release of a large amount of energy, which limits the experimental studies that can be performed on them. Computational methods including density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been used to investigate trigger bonds, those which break to initiate detonation. These bonds are commonly found within explosophores, substituents that increase the explosive potential of a molecule.
The Wiberg bond index (WBI) is an estimation of orbital overlap and bond strength between two …
Towards Improving Computational Modeling Of The Lumbar Spine - Impact Of Material Properties And Laminotomy On Spinal Biomechanics, Isaac K. Kumi
Towards Improving Computational Modeling Of The Lumbar Spine - Impact Of Material Properties And Laminotomy On Spinal Biomechanics, Isaac K. Kumi
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Spinal ligaments play a crucial role in maintaining the mechanical stability of the lumbar spine. These dense, collagenous tissues not only resist excessive motion but also distribute loads between spinal components to protect neural structures. Traditionally, the mechanical response of ligaments has been modeled using linear elastic assumptions, which treat the tissue as having a constant stiffness regardless of loading history. While this simplifies analysis, it fails to capture the time-dependent behaviors, such as creep, stress relaxation, and hysteresis, that are characteristic of biological tissues.
Viscoelastic modeling may provide a more physiologically accurate representation by incorporating both elastic and viscous …

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have revolutionized high-energy physics by enabling generative models to address key detector-related Challenges. This work explores the generative model to mitigate smearing, acceptance, and inefficiency in particle detectors, enhancing experimental precision.
We present a generative model-based framework to model and correct detector distortions. Using the Jefferson Lab CLAS g11 experiment as a case study, our approach successfully unfolds detector effects in multi-particle final states while preserving multidimensional correlations despite complex reaction mechanisms. A key focus is addressing the acceptance problem—accurately modeling detector acceptance without computationally expensive simulations. By training generative model-based framework on simulated detector …

Effects Of Sediment Composition On Spartina Alterniflora And Juncus Roemerianus Productivity In Coastal Virginia: A Thin-Layer Sediment Placement Experiment, Caitlin Hemphill
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Climate change poses a major threat to the health of estuaries and their coastal wetland systems. The Chesapeake Bay’s coastal salt marshes are at high risk of inundation due to sea-level rise and land subsidence. Restoration techniques for maintaining coastal marsh resistance to sea-level rise are being developed and refined, with thin layer placement (TLP) emerging as a feasible solution in many areas of the United States. Despite TLPs use across the country, additional research is needed on species-specific responses, sediment types, and geographically focused studies in the lower Chesapeake Bay. My research addresses these gaps by combining both greenhouse …
Good And Safe: Exploring The Impact Of Mindfulness And Primal World Beliefs On Psychological Well-Being, Katelyn J. Haschke
Good And Safe: Exploring The Impact Of Mindfulness And Primal World Beliefs On Psychological Well-Being, Katelyn J. Haschke
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Dispositional mindfulness refers to the ability to intentionally focus on the present moment, which positively affects psychological well-being (PWB). Mindfulness can be practiced through formal interventions—such as meditation or body scan, where individuals engage in structured activities to cultivate awareness—or informal practices, such as focusing on one task at a time where mindfulness is integrated into routine activities. A person’s phenomenological perspective, shaped by their core beliefs about the world (primals), also influences PWB. For instance, those who view the world as mostly safe or good may be more likely to form close relationships and engage more deeply with their …
Two Essays On Lottery-Like Stocks, Reihaneh Haghighi Zadeh
Two Essays On Lottery-Like Stocks, Reihaneh Haghighi Zadeh
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
Essay 1: Momentum and Investors' Lottery-like Preference
Previous empirical studies have consistently shown that lottery-like stocks exhibit unconditionally low average returns due to investor overreaction to extreme short-term gains. However, the results show when the momentum strategy is jointly conditioned on stocks with high maximum daily returns (MAX), high-MAX stocks yield significantly higher future returns than their low-MAX counterparts. For value-weighted portfolios, a momentum strategy applied within the high-MAX category generates an average monthly return of 2.5%, compared to only 0.25% in the low-MAX category. This return premium exceeds that of the standard momentum strategy proposed by Jegadeesh and Titman …
Empowering The User Through Inclusive Technical Writing, Robert Enriquez
Empowering The User Through Inclusive Technical Writing, Robert Enriquez
English Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the issues in technical writing due to a disconnect between writer and reader/user. I am basing this study on my real-life job. I am a manager at a well-known sneaker retailer. In August 2024, there was a Workforce Management (WFM) software that the sneaker retailer launched in the retail stores. The WFM itself was glitched and unfinished. Not much disclaimer, training or preparation was given other than these procedural documents the sneaker retailer gave. If all the store managers had to depend on was technical documentation to prepare for this already glitched WFM, then I argue there …

Political science faculty members have often used simulations to promote civic engagement and build political efficacy in students. However, the use of political simulations with community college students has not been studied as extensively as it has with their four-year counterparts. Through the interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) methodology, this study examined the experiences of nine political science faculty members who use simulations with community college students to understand how instructional designers might better support their civic engagement and design efforts. Faculty members who participated in the study use simulations as constructive social interactions; as comprehensive learning experiences integrating preparation, facilitation …
“We Are Trans, But We’Re Not Transitional”: Exploring Safety, Place, And Space In The Lives Of Transgender Individuals In Southeastern Virginia, Susana Avalos
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
In general, little research exists on trans people’s spatial experiences despite space being highly relevant to their experiences of violence and perceptions of safety. To date, two criminological studies have examined LGBTQ people’s fear of crime in relation to public or private places and spaces. This is in stark contrast to the sizable place and space literature on cisgender men and women. These topics from the perspectives of trans people are underexplored primarily because most criminological research has historically upheld binarized understandings of gender. Safety should not be privileged or limited to certain groups, individuals, or spaces. Instead, safety should …
Analysis On Plasma Propulsion Thruster Material Reconfiguration For Thrust Stabilization, Chinedumu Chidiebere Okafo
Analysis On Plasma Propulsion Thruster Material Reconfiguration For Thrust Stabilization, Chinedumu Chidiebere Okafo
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Rocket propulsion has been a primary focus for scientific and technical advancement supporting space exploration. For long-duration, low-thrust space missions, propulsion systems designed with plasma energy as the primary source for generating thrust are of high interest. Plasma energy, like electric propulsion, involves the excited state of ionized atoms, where the ionized particles are separated and then act as a propellant to push a spacecraft in the intended direction for flight. Although more energy efficient compared to traditional rocket systems, plasma propulsion has the deficiency of consistent erosion of the metallic containment substrate, as plasma is being generated and released …

Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Cannabis use among young adult college students has risen steadily over the past decade, raising concerns about the associated health, academic, and psychological consequences. While cannabis use motives and readiness to change have each been linked to use patterns and outcomes, limited research has examined how these factors interact. The current study investigated whether readiness to change, based on the Transtheoretical Model (TTM), moderates the relationship between cannabis use motives and cannabis-related consequences as well as past-30-day use frequency. A sample of 100 college students 18-25 years old (Mage = 20.08, SD = 2.12; 67% female; 55.0% Black or …
The Influence Of Monsoon Variability On The Circulation Of The Near-Surface Indian Ocean And The Depth-Integrated Chlorophyll, Marufa Ishaque
The Influence Of Monsoon Variability On The Circulation Of The Near-Surface Indian Ocean And The Depth-Integrated Chlorophyll, Marufa Ishaque
OES Theses and Dissertations
The Indian Ocean experiences a strong semiannual reversal of monsoon winds, which determines the weather and climate of Asia, including freshwater fluxes between the atmosphere, land, and ocean. Studies and model projections suggest that the timing and intensity of the seasonal monsoon have already started to change, with more dramatic changes likely in the future. However, the impact of these changes on the Indian Ocean circulation system, including the inter-basin salt/freshwater transport between the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, remains unclear. To better understand how monsoon variability affects Indian Ocean circulation patterns, a Regional Ocean Modeling System simulation …
