Directory Of Services And Resources To Support Breastfeeding Initiation, Exclusivity, And Longevity In The El Paso Texas Region, Tiffany Nichelle Butler

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Human milk is recognized as the ideal food for infants; however, in order for human milk to get to the infants, breastfeeding requires the support of the healthcare system. Among infants born in 2015 in United States, 4 out of 5 started to breastfeed and despite of this high rate, only 22% of mothers exclusively breastfed for 6 months. The decisions to breastfeed are influenced by multiple factors including breastfeeding education and support, hospital practices, and participating in tailored education programs. The Office of the Surgeon General has identified the need for healthcare systems to "guarantee continuity of skilled support …

Cross-Language Sense Priming, Jennifer M. Blush Jan 2019

Cross-Language Sense Priming, Jennifer M. Blush

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Research has yet to systematically examine the extent to which activation spreads across multiple senses of words. The two present experiments focused on examining the effects of cross-language sense priming via processing polysemous words in and out of a sentence context. In Experiment 1, participants made semantic verification of word pairs; critical trials contained polysemous words. In Experiment 2, participants read sentences in an eye-tracker with critical sentences containing both instantiations of a polysemous word. Results from both experiments suggested that senses can be primed within and across languages. These results give support for the DFM's interconnective network of conceptual …

The Battle Off The Battlefield: Exploring Medical Cannabis Use Among U.S. Veterans Looking For Relief, Viridiana Edwards

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study analyzed the reasons U.S. veterans use cannabis, focusing on what ways cannabis is socially acceptable, what ways it is viewed as deviant, and to what extent veterans are using cannabis for pain and/or mental relief. To answer these questions, an open and closed ended questionnaire was created and was available online. My results showed that U.S. veterans were using medical cannabis due to the negative side effects from the pharmaceutical medication that they were prescribed, physicians not listening to them during their appointments, and for social integration.

Patient Perception In Quality Of Health Care In Civilian And Military Hospitals, Rodolfo Gonzalez Garza Jan 2019

Patient Perception In Quality Of Health Care In Civilian And Military Hospitals, Rodolfo Gonzalez Garza

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to examine and relate Erving Goffman's theory and concept of total institution to the perceived experienced quality of health care that occurs in the treatment of patients, in both preoperative and postoperative surgical procedures, at civilian and military hospitals. Goffman argues that there is a distinct relationship between the medical staff and patients at the hospitals. The staff most often feels superior and correct in their actions, while the patients perceive themselves as weak, inferior, and defenseless. In my thesis, I use a qualitative method approach to determine how veteran patients perceive their quality …

Examining Perceptions Of Service Quality Of Student Services And Satisfaction Among International Students At Universities In Indiana And Michigan, Mordekai Ochieng Ongo

Dissertations

Problem

Universities in the United States face financial constraints, intense competition for students, declining student enrollment, and constant student attrition. However, an increasing number of international students seek higher education abroad, especially in the U.S. Providing quality services to these international students might help institutions attract and retain more of them. Unfortunately, little empirical research has been done on international students’ perceptions of service quality, especially of non-academic services. This study fills that gap by using a modified SERVPERF questionnaire to investigate international students perceived service quality and satisfaction at eight universities in Indiana and Michigan.

Method

The purpose of …

Islam, Christianity, Traditional Religions And Power Politics In Northern Nigeria Since Pre-Islamic Period, Emmanuel M. Abar

Dissertations

Problem

Currently in Northern Nigeria, religious interaction among the three major religious traditions, Islam, Christianity, and African Traditional Religion, is marred by violent religious conflicts. Also, competing concepts of religious legitimacy, which appeal to the historical heritage of Nigeria, are often used to validate and justify the violation of religious freedom. Does the current state of religious interaction among the various religious groups reflect the true heritage of religious interaction in Northern Nigeria? Or is it possible that the history of the interaction between African Traditional Religions, Islam, and Christianity in the past might actually be a heritage that points …

A Satellite Assessment Of Environmental Controls Of Phytoplankton Community Size Structure, Colleen B. Mouw, Audrey B. Ciochetto, James A. Yoder

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Phytoplankton play a key role as the base of the marine food web and a crucial component in the Earth's carbon cycle. There have been a few regional studies that have utilized satellite‐estimated phytoplankton functional type products in conjunction with other environmental metrics. Here we expand to a global perspective and ask, what are the physical drivers of phytoplankton composition variability? Using a variety of satellite‐observed ocean color products and physical properties spanning 1997–2015, we characterize spatial and temporal variability in phytoplankton community size structure in relation to satellite‐based physical drivers. We consider the relationships globally and by major thermal …

The Southern Ocean is in an era of significant change. Historic overharvesting of marine mammals and recent climatic warming have cascading impacts on resource availability and, in turn, ecosystem structure and function. We examined trophic responses of sympatric chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarctica) and gentoo (Pygoscelis papua) penguins to nearly 100 y of shared environmental change in the Antarctic Peninsula region using compound-specific stable isotope analyses of museum specimens. A century ago, gentoo penguins fed almost exclusively on low-trophic level prey, such as krill, during the peak of historic overexploitation of marine mammals, which was hypothesized to have …

Upper Ocean Distribution Of Glacial Meltwater In The Amundsen Sea, Antarctica, Louise C. Biddle, Brice Loose, Karen J. Heywood Jan 2019

Upper Ocean Distribution Of Glacial Meltwater In The Amundsen Sea, Antarctica, Louise C. Biddle, Brice Loose, Karen J. Heywood

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Pine Island Ice Shelf, in the Amundsen Sea, is losing mass due to increased heat transport by warm ocean water penetrating beneath the ice shelf and causing basal melt. Tracing this warm deep water and the resulting glacial meltwater can identify changes in melt rate and the regions most affected by the increased input of this freshwater. Here, optimum multiparameter analysis is used to deduce glacial meltwater fractions from independent water mass characteristics (standard hydrographic observations, noble gases, and oxygen isotopes), collected during a ship-based campaign in the eastern Amundsen Sea in February–March 2014. Noble gases (neon, argon, krypton, and …

Microstructure Evolution Of Chalcogenide Materials Via Molecular Dynamics, Sharmin Abdullah

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The properties of a material are defined by its granular microstructure which is determined by its grain evolution and the types of grain boundaries present in the structure. For example, the performance of Cadmium Sulfide/Cadmium Telluride (CdS/CdTe) solar cells can be affected by the presence of grain boundaries which makes the study of grain structure evolution a very important part of solar cell performance optimization. Grain boundary mobilities are important properties in material science and engineering as they determine grain structures under given processing and operating conditions.

In this thesis, several computational tools were used to analyze the formation and …

Confidence Intervals For The Expected P-Value, Emmanuel Kofi Abrefa Jan 2019

Confidence Intervals For The Expected P-Value, Emmanuel Kofi Abrefa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The p-value is widely used in many application fields. In common practice, a scientific finding is deemed statistically significant if its resultant p-value is less than a pre-specified significance level, for example α = 0.05, albeit many statistically significant results are not reproducible in new studies. Mixed reasons including misuses, abuses, misunderstanding and misinterpretation arouse intensive debates and conservatives around the p-value from time to time over the years. Yet no reasonable solutions have been proposed. In this research, we make efforts to close the gap by advocating the use of confidence level for the expected p-value p0. This allows …

Since ISTEA, Bridge Management Systems (BMS) have been utilized to inform decision-making regarding bridge projects such as maintenance, rehabilitation, and replacement (MR&R) under financial limitations (Agrawal, Kawaguchi, and Chen 2010). …

Comparative Study Of Analytical Models Of The Gruneisen Parameter Of Metals As Function Of Pressure, Celia Garcia Amparan Jan 2019

Comparative Study Of Analytical Models Of The Gruneisen Parameter Of Metals As Function Of Pressure, Celia Garcia Amparan

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Commonly used Gruneisen parameter (γ) models only hold accurate in limited regimes making them inapplicable for use over wide temperature-pressure conditions. The accuracy of these analytical models of γ and of the thermal expansion of solids are of particular interest as these are considered proxies for quantifying anharmonicity, which may be a significant contribution to the thermal pressure at high temperatures. This work reviews various definitions of γ and their relations to the equations of state and apply them to two simple metals: Tantalum (Ta) and Copper (Cu), for which a high body of experimental data exists. Classical Molecular Dynamics …
