Deciding When And How To Impair Goodwill: The Case Of Enervate Inc., Jason Porter, Jane M. Weiss, Philip Church
The North American Accounting Studies
Constituents to the accounting profession recommend that educators teach critical thinking skills, thus improving accounting graduates’ abilities to achieve long-term career success. Students in upper division accounting courses possess the basic understanding of accounting principles and are provided new content requiring analysis and evaluation, which makes these courses a good setting for motivating students to develop critical thinking skills. This paper discusses an exercise for upper division accounting courses that provide students the opportunity to examine the challenging concept of goodwill impairment for a parent company with three separate subsidiaries. The suggested exercise requires students to research, properly cite, and …

A Technique For Calculating Flexural Rigidity Of Nonlinear Systems, Chase Hartquist
A Technique For Calculating Flexural Rigidity Of Nonlinear Systems, Chase Hartquist
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
Faculty Adviser: Guy Genin
Geometric, kinematic, force, and material nonlinearity arise in manufactured products. Flexural rigidity, or relative stiffness of a beam, cannot be measured accurately for flexible, composite medical devices like catheters and sheaths using linear beam theory because they undergo high deformations when subject to relatively small loads. Surgeons depend on the relative stiffness of their catheters to determine the maneuverability of their devices. For neurovascular interventions, surgeons rely on stiffness to determine if their catheter can navigate arduous vasculature, especially around the aortic arch1. Navigation has become increasingly difficult as surgeons have adopted the …

The Lighting Programmer As Creative Collaborator, Kelli Zezulka
The Lighting Programmer As Creative Collaborator, Kelli Zezulka
Behind the Scenes: Journal of Theatre Production Practice
The lighting programmer as a discrete profession is a relatively recent development in UK theatre production and one whose job description and responsibilities vary widely. Being an excellent programmer is not merely a case of manual dexterity and syntactical knowhow; it encompasses a range of interpersonal skills and empathetic awareness. Using two examples from recent fieldwork, and through an analysis of the language-in-use of lighting programmers, this article positions the theatre lighting programmer as an important member of both the creative and production teams and argues for greater awareness and promotion of their influence on theatre-making.
Legal Certainty For Foreign Investors In Coal Mining In Indonesia, Rouli Anita Velentina Anita Velentina
Legal Certainty For Foreign Investors In Coal Mining In Indonesia, Rouli Anita Velentina Anita Velentina
Jurnal Hukum & Pembangunan
Since 2009, there have been significant regulatory changes in coal mining in Indonesia, beginning with the enactment of Law No.4 of 2009 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining, which replaced the prior system of contracts and mining authorizations (Kuasa Pertambangan; KP) with mining business permits (Ijin Usaha Pertambangan; IUP). There are two types of IUP: exploration and production operation. Then, the mechanism of Clean and Clear was created to reduce the large numbers of overlapping licenses. This article explores Indonesian regulatory changes and court rulings in coal mining and clarifies share divestment requirements for foreign investors in Indonesian coal-mining operations, which …

Measuring Affect-Related Cognitive Bias: Do Mice In Opposite Affective States React Differently To Negative And Positive Stimuli?, Ac Trevarthen, S Kappel, C Roberts, Em Finnegan, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Affect-driven cognitive biases can be used as an indicator of affective (emotional) state. Since humans in negative affective states demonstrate greater responses to negatively-valenced stimuli, we investigated putative affect-related bias in mice by monitoring their response to unexpected, task-irrelevant stimuli of different valence. Thirty-one C57BL/6J and 31 DBA/2J females were individually trained to return to their home-cage in a runway. Mice then underwent an affective manipulation acutely inducing a negative (NegAff) or a comparatively less negative (CompLessNeg) affective state before immediately being tested in the runway with either an ‘attractive’ (familiar food) or ‘threatening’ (flashing light) stimulus. Mice were subsequently …

Axion-Like-Particle Decay In Strong Electromagnetic Backgrounds, B. King, B. M. Dillon, K. A. Beyer, G. Gregori
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Abstract The decay of a massive pseudoscalar, scalar and U(1) boson into an electron-positron pair in the presence of strong electromagnetic backgrounds is calculated. Of particular interest is the constant-crossed-field limit, relevant for experiments that aim to measure high-energy axion-like-particle conversion into electron-positron pairs in a magnetic field. The total probability depends on the quantum nonlinearity parameter — a product of field and lightfront momentum invariants. Depending on the seed particle mass, different decay regimes are identified. In the below-threshold case, we find the probability depends on a non-perturbative tunneling exponent depending on the quantum parameter and the particle mass. …
Comparing Levels Of Environmental Literacy Between Stars- And Non-Stars-Rated Universities, Analisa Kathleen Campos
Comparing Levels Of Environmental Literacy Between Stars- And Non-Stars-Rated Universities, Analisa Kathleen Campos
Master's Theses
The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) is a program that measures university sustainability levels. STARS ranks university campuses based on the number of points received from individual specifications such as green buildings, access to mass transit, number of environmental courses, and more. Therefore, the rank a school receives translates directly to its level of sustainability as an institution. Currently, it is unknown if there is a relationship between a campus’s STARS-rating and individual students’ environmental literacy (EL). The purpose of this project was to analyze the impacts of university’s sustainable features on student EL. Surveys were administered to …
Factors Affecting Polymer Brush Thermal Stability, Alexis Sarabia
Factors Affecting Polymer Brush Thermal Stability, Alexis Sarabia
Master's Theses
Nanostructures, features that are generated on the scale of 1-100 nm, have potential in many applications including semiconductors and sensors. Mixed polymer brushes, which are composed of two or more unique polymer types covalently tethered to a solid surface, have been shown to give rise to distinct nanostructures. The solid support for these systems can be flat surfaces, such as silicon wafers, or 3-dimensional surfaces, such as nanoparticles. Polymer brushes are mechanically and chemically robust, but their thermal stability is not well understood. Because many potential applications require elevated temperatures, understanding and tuning their thermal stability is important. We studied …
The Evolution Of The German-Chinese Strategic Partnership: A Case Study Approach, Marian Ehret
The Evolution Of The German-Chinese Strategic Partnership: A Case Study Approach, Marian Ehret
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This paper examined current and future tendencies in the evolution of the German-Chinese strategic partnership. Because of current events, both countries acted increasingly aligned. The central research question is: will the strategic partnership between China and Germany supersede the American-German alliance regarding political importance? A literature review and a media content analysis in a German context, focusing on the years from 2013 until 2018, showed that German scholars and publishers evaluated the direction and potential of the binational relations as (mostly) positive. As their judgment came from a short-term observation, Oswald Spengler’s culture-historical approach was applied, as it allowed embedding …

In this study, Bacchi and Benan’s (2016) framework is used to analyze the story of Vice Mayor Fely of Tubajon, Dinagat Islands. Her story is looked into to serve as a platform where the habits, practices, and situations in connection to structures and power relations in the political arena in her municipality and the province are brought to the fore to be in dialogue with a few critical questions. Some of these questions include: (a) Why do women politicians find it difficult to land a political position? and (b) Should women politicians be forced to carve political identities when their …
Understanding The Role Of Consciousness In Maruyama’S Political Philosophy, Pamela Ann J. Boongaling
Understanding The Role Of Consciousness In Maruyama’S Political Philosophy, Pamela Ann J. Boongaling
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
In this paper, I will argue that Masao Maruyama’s concept, basso ostinato, is best understood in conjunction with the evolution of the term consciousness in Japanese intellectual thought. Doing so allows us (1) to provide a more charitable interpretation of Maruyama’s basso ostinato and (2) to supply a more methodological account of Maruyama’s political philosophy. Such an interpretation of Maruyama’s views also enables us (3) to demonstrate the continuous significance and applicability of his framework and methodology as I use his basso ostinato to show why Japan’s “education-based nation” policy cannot sustain its post-war form of ultranationalism due to the …

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship
Cave animals are a fascinating group of species often demonstrating characteristics including reduced eyes and pigmentation, metabolic efficiency, and enhanced sensory systems. Asellus aquaticus, an isopod crustacean, is an emerging model for cave biology. Cave and surface forms of this species differ in many characteristics, including eye size, pigmentation, and antennal length. Existing resources for this species include a linkage map, mapped regions responsible for eye and pigmentation traits, sequenced adult transcriptomes, and comparative embryological descriptions of the surface and cave forms. Our ultimate goal is to identify genes and mutations responsible for the differences between the cave and …
Analysis Of Newspaper Headlines: A Case Of Two Tanzanian English Dailies, Erasmus Akiley Msuya
Analysis Of Newspaper Headlines: A Case Of Two Tanzanian English Dailies, Erasmus Akiley Msuya
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The current study analyses newspaper headlines in respect to three categories: international, local, and business news (irrespective of the geographical scope) of two English dailies: a government-owned Daily News, and a privately-owned The Guardian. The study sought to analyse newspaper headlines guided by semantic under-determinacy, an important theoretical framework in accounting for a balance between linguistic economy that characterises newspaper headlines and communicative precision. The data were collected via documentary review. The headlines were analysed under three categories: local, international, and business news that included local and international spectrums. A total of 2004 headlines were randomly selected for analysis: 1088 …

The Doors Of Perception, Gary Charness, Alessandro Sontuoso
ESI Working Papers
We investigate how a player’s strategic behavior is affected by the set of notions she uses in thinking about the game, i.e., the “frame”. To do so, we consider matching games where two players are presented with a set of objects, from which each player must privately choose one (with the goal of matching the counterpart’s choice). We propose a novel theory positing that different player types are aware of different attributes of the strategy options, hence different frames; we then rationalize why differences in players’ frames may lead to differences in choice behavior. Unlike previous theories of framing, our …
Emotional Intelligence And Knowledge Management: A Necessary Link?, Isabel Rechberg
Emotional Intelligence And Knowledge Management: A Necessary Link?, Isabel Rechberg
Publications and Research
This theoretical paper studies the effect of emotional intelligence (EI) on individuals' participation in knowledge management (KM) practices. Individuals are the sources of knowledge, and EI may advance individuals' self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship-management skills, which in turn positively impacts their knowledge processing behavior. The argument is made that knowledge creation is enabled through individuals' ability to recognize and correctly interpret emotional and environmental clues. Knowledge sharing is facilitated through individuals' interpersonal, communication, and team-working skills, enabled through self-awareness and social awareness. Knowledge is retained in organizations where EI enacts individuals' corporate citizenship behavior, adaptability, and job satisfaction. Where …

Disaster Resilience As Communication Practice: Remembering And Forgetting Lessons From Past Disasters Through Practices That Prepare For The Next One, Rebecca M. Rice, Jody L. S. Jahn
Communication Studies Faculty Research
Communities learn important lessons about their vulnerabilities from disasters. A crucial aspect of resilience is how communities apply past lessons to prepare for future events. We use a practice lens to examine how communities remember and forget lessons through everyday communication surrounding their preparedness activities. We analyze two cases of disaster preparedness in one community. The first site, a local Office of Emergency Management, adapted national policies to the community while also keeping local disaster lessons in mind (i.e. remembering lessons). The second site represented an intractable conflict between the U.S. Forest Service and a community group that inhibited the …

I Don’T Know How To Talk About These Wor(L)Ds, But I Do Walk, I Shoot, And I Write: Autoethnographic Written And Visual Cures For A Fragmented Identity, Ursula-Helen Kassaveti
The Qualitative Report
In this article, I examine how my unprogrammatized and spontaneous informal fieldwork in Athens, undertaken in a rather unconsciously autoethnographic vein, has helped me while on the process of investigating my personal identity. My temporary change of academic direction and my delving into the ocean of fieldwork have shaped and answered my endless quest for important answers about a researcher’s own self. Through the use of written text, photography and other visual indexes, “thin” and “thick” description, I argue that autoethnography as a method could be a healing process, providing therapy for a researcher’s “fragmented” heart and identity.
