Sustainability Values Of Students As Influences On The Image Of A University Transitioning To Sustainability, Anna A. Mendiola

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

The journey toward sustainability is a difficult process for a university given the complex requirements necessary for becoming sustainable. To implement sustainability initiatives effectively, therefore, it is important to obtain the support and commitment of university stakeholders. Having a good image as far as the school’s efforts at sustainability are concerned engages stakeholders and encourages that commitment. It is an important element of change as it provides evidence that the school is indeed serious in its activities. Yet is the perception of the school’s image influenced by the students’ sustainability values? A survey of 798 college students at a private …

Prediction Of Haul Units’ Requirements For The Open Pit Mines Operating Towards Closure, Bartłomiej Skawina

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

The determination of haul units is one of the important steps in the equipment selection process. The process should aim at minimizing the operational costs and create an optimal match for the haulage system. When open pit mines operating towards closure, reducing the operational costs results in significant gaining, and the savings can be used to implement some of the closure plans. In this paper, the prediction of haul units for an open pit mine which operates towards the final pit limit was analysed using discrete event simulation and multiple linear regressions. The result shows that the changes in production …

Is Vertical Orientation Ability And Visual Feedback Training Strategy Useful For Pusher Syndrome After Stroke: A System Reviewarticle, Chien-Hsun Lee Dec 2019

Is Vertical Orientation Ability And Visual Feedback Training Strategy Useful For Pusher Syndrome After Stroke: A System Reviewarticle, Chien-Hsun Lee

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Stroke patients with pusher syndrome (PS) have a longer recovery time than those without this disorder. This special syndrome causes difficulty in maintaining balance when sitting or standing, with sufferers "pushing and leaning" automatically to hemi-side. PS patients may also have cognition impairment, hemi-neglect, or aphasia. Alleviating all these factors requires extensive training for therapists, however, few undergo such training. Wang et. al. published a reviewarticle article in Taiwan Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2005, and the conclusions drawn were: 1) PS patients have abnormal subjective posture and vertical orientation ability; 2) training strategies that use visual feedback …

Affective Misattribution Following Memory Decisions Does Not Transfer To Interleaved Items, David Grybinas Dec 2019

Affective Misattribution Following Memory Decisions Does Not Transfer To Interleaved Items, David Grybinas

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The outcomes of memory search appear to have affective consequences. For instance, during recognition memory tests, concluding that a retrieval probe is from a prior study period (‘old’) leads to higher pleasantness ratings for the probe than concluding it is novel (‘new”). Grybinas, Kantner, and Dobbins (2019) explained this and related findings via a Confirmation of Search (COS) hypothesis that assumes that the affective consequences of successful versus failed episodic retrieval are misattributed to probes used to elicit memory search. While these affective misattributions clearly occur for the memory probes themselves (within-item misattribution), social psychological research has previously shown that …

Do Monetary Aggregates Belong In A Monetary Model? Evidence From The Uk, Mehmet Ezer Dec 2019

Do Monetary Aggregates Belong In A Monetary Model? Evidence From The Uk, Mehmet Ezer

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

Conventional monetary models focus on interest rates and omit monetary aggregates from policy discussions. This paper examines whether augmenting the measure of monetary policy with monetary aggregates helps determine more robust links between policy and economic fluctuations. After constructing the Divisia money index for the UK, I employ structural vector autoregression to identify two different UK monetary policy regimes. Inclusion of this (correct) measure of money and disentangling the money supply from demand resolve the price and liquidity puzzles. The results point to the informational content embedded in monetary aggregates, suggesting they should be taken into account in evaluations of …

Financial Intermediation Costs In A Dual Banking System: The Role Of Islamic Banking, Mansor H. Ibrahim, Siong Hook Law Dec 2019

Financial Intermediation Costs In A Dual Banking System: The Role Of Islamic Banking, Mansor H. Ibrahim, Siong Hook Law

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This paper empirically analyses the role of Islamic banking in financial intermediation costs as measured by net interest margins for a leading dual banking country, Malaysia. Controlling for theoretically motivated determinants of the margins, the paper compares the interest/financing margins of conventional and Islamic banks and examines the impacts of Islamic banking presence on bank margins. The analysis provides evidence of the higher margins of Islamic banks compared to those of conventional banks. Further, the difference in bank margins between the two types of banks can be attributed to differences in market power, operating costs, and diversification. Finally, Islamic banking …

Understanding Indonesia's City-Level Consumer Price Formation: Implications For Price Stability, Paresh Kumar Narayan Dec 2019

Understanding Indonesia's City-Level Consumer Price Formation: Implications For Price Stability, Paresh Kumar Narayan

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

Using the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data of 82 Indonesian cities, we propose the hypothesis of heterogeneity in the cities’ contribution to the aggregate Indonesian CPI. Using a price discovery model fitted to monthly data, we discover that (1) of the 23 cities in the province of Sumatera, five contribute 44% and nine contribute 66.7% to price changes, and (2) of the 26 cities in Java, four alone contribute 41.6% to price changes. Even in smaller provinces, such as Bali and Nusa Tenggara, one city alone dominates the change in aggregate CPI. From these results, we draw implications for maintaining …

Monetary Policy Rules And Macroeconomic Stability: Evidence From Sri Lanka, Kesavarajah Mayandy Dec 2019

Monetary Policy Rules And Macroeconomic Stability: Evidence From Sri Lanka, Kesavarajah Mayandy

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This study estimates the forward-looking monetary policy reaction function for Sri Lanka using monthly data from 1980 to 2017. The results indicate that the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) followed the Taylor rule to set interest rates. Our forwardlooking model estimations show that the coefficient on inflation increases over time, reflecting the greater focus on price stability by the bank. The results suggest that the CBSL reacted to nominal exchange rate depreciation by tightening monetary policy. Although the degree of interest rate smoothness gradually decreases over time, the study shows that the CBSL did not react to movements in …

Effectiveness Of Early Warning Models: A Critical Review And New Agenda For Future Direction, Rakesh Padhan, K. P. Prabheesh Dec 2019

Effectiveness Of Early Warning Models: A Critical Review And New Agenda For Future Direction, Rakesh Padhan, K. P. Prabheesh

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This paper suggests a new agenda for constructing early warning models (EWMs) to enhance their effectiveness in predicting financial crises. The central argument of the new agenda aims to eradicate the weaknesses of existing EWMs, since their failure to predict the global financial crisis of 2007–2008 demonstrates the need to improve their efficiency. We document the history of EWMs and propose a new agenda as follows: 1) the accurate measurement of a financial crisis, 2) implementation of a fourthgeneration crisis model to capture the dynamic nature of the financial crisis, and 3) the inclusion of interconnectedness/contagion variables as explanatory variables …

Bali Mawacara: Is A Quasi-Common Law System Developing In Balinese Customary Law?, Danial Kelly, Wayan P. Windia

Indonesia Law Review

The Indonesian island of Bali is internationally renowned as a popular tourist destination. Tourists from around the world have been attracted to Bali’s rich and colourful displays of culture and its friendly people for many decades. Intertwined with the predominately Hindu culture that is so readily visible is the invisible customary legal system of Bali that regulates much of the daily life of the Balinese. This autochthonous legal system exists in plurality with the Indonesian state legal system. As with all legal systems, the Balinese customary law system is in a state of flux. This article will examine the foundational …

Contextualizing Restorative Justice Through Diversion Mechanism: A Study Of Indonesia Juvenile Justice System, Faiz Rahman

Indonesia Law Review

Implementation of restorative justice in the juvenile justice system in many countries has undergone its dynamics in the past few decades, including in Indonesia. The enactment of Indonesia Juvenile Justice System Law in mid-2014, which invalidates the 1997 Juvenile Court Law, became a significant point of juvenile justice reformation in Indonesia. The new Law began to shift the retributive paradigm in the Juvenile Court Law, as the previous statutory basis for juvenile justice in Indonesia, to restorative justice paradigm. The new Law introduces the Diversion mechanism as a means to implement the restorative justice approach. This article seeks to discuss …

Temporal Poetics In Thomson And Craighead’S The Time Machine In Alphabetical Order, A Prior Dec 2019

Temporal Poetics In Thomson And Craighead’S The Time Machine In Alphabetical Order, A Prior

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This paper considers The Time Machine in Alphabetical Order (2010) by Thomson and Craighead as an exploration of contemporary media technologies and their problematisation of time. After a brief hermeneutic reading of the work’s narrative, aesthetic and semiotic registers, the paper undertakes an analysis at the level of materiality and processuality. This approach concludes by drawing out some connections between hermeneutic and material/processual characteristics of the work as an exploration of mediality. Key to Thomson and Craighead’s approach is the simultaneous foregrounding and manipulation of both these levels of meaning, for example through their technological and mediatised take on Oulipo’s …

Newborn And Childhood Differential Dna Methylation And Liver Fat In School-Age Children, Madelon L. Geurtsen, Vincent W.V. Jaddoe, Lucas A. Salas, Susana Santos, Janine F. Felix

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common chronic liver disease in children in western countries. Adverse early-life exposures are associated with higher liver fat percentages in children. Differential DNA methylation may underlie these associations. We aimed to identify differential DNA methylation in newborns and children associated with liver fat accumulation in childhood. We also examined whether DNA methylation at 22 cytosine-phosphate-guanine sites (CpGs) associated with adult non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with liver fat in children. Within a population-based prospective cohort study, we analyzed epigenome-wide DNA methylation data of 785 newborns and 344 10-year-old children in relation …

Percieved Threat Of Homosexuals In Indonesia: Construct, Measurement, And Correlates, Susana Tjipto, Elisabeth Haksi Mayawati, Allan B. I. Bernardo

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

In Indonesia, homonegativity still exists and acts of violence against homosexual groups still happen, but there has not been much research on aspects of this homonegativity beyond inquiring into general attitudes towards homosexuals. This study has several aims: to qualitatively explore dimensions of perceived threat, to develop a measure of perceived threat of homosexuals, and to study some correlates and perceived threat of homosexuals in Indonesian samples. We used a mixed-method approach (qualitative-quantitative) to gather the data. Study 1 is a qualitative study that seeks to identify expressions and dimensions of perceived threat of homosexuals using thematic analysis of responses …

Attracting And Retaining Young Workforce In Indonesia: Does Person-Organization (P-O) Fit Matter?, Dina Sartika Dec 2019

Attracting And Retaining Young Workforce In Indonesia: Does Person-Organization (P-O) Fit Matter?, Dina Sartika

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Rooted in the similarity−attraction−attrition paradigm, Cable and Judge’s framework has been one of the leading models in explaining Person−Organization fit. It associates perceived value congruence with employee work attitudes pre and post their entry. This study extends the model and findings by looking at the specific, underlying value dimensions that cause these effects. Drawing on a sample of 800 Indonesian jobseekers, I applied polynomial regression to test the model. Results showed that congruence between personal and organizational social responsibility value was the strongest and most consistent dimension predicting employee job satisfaction and organizational commitment.

Some Histopathological Findings In Dead Kihansi Spray Toads In Captivity, Joshua J Malago

Tanzania Journal of Science

Raising of Kihansi spray toad (KST), Nectophrynoides asperginis, in captivity is associated with disorders that can be fatal. Since diagnosis of these disorders cannot be confirmed grossly, the current study was aimed at exploring histopathological findings in dead KSTs kept under captivity in Tanzania. Dead KSTs were immediately recovered, observed for gross changes, fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin, processed routinely, and stained sections reviewed for histological changes. Observed infectious agents were strongyloides (25.3%), ciliates (1.7%), lungworms (0.6%), fungi (3.4%) and bacteria (5.1%) or mixed infections (9%) of these agents. Noted histopathological lesions in affected organs included infiltration of inflammatory …
