Las políticas lingüísticas en México– tanto a nivel regional como nacional – carecen de claridad suficiente, y el francés ocupa un lugar insignificante o incluso inexistente debido a que cada Estado de la República adopta sus propias iniciativas de política lingüística, y donde la decisión sobre el aprendizaje del idioma extranjero se deja a cargo de cada institución, que tiende a tomar decisiones basadas sobre las demandas de su entorno y no sobre los principios del plurilingüismo y el pluriculturalismo (Silva, 2011)
