Driven To Distraction? Behavioural Impacts Of Anthropogenic Noise On The European Hermit Crab Pagurus Bernhardus From Individual To Group Level, Svenja Tidau Jan 2019

Driven To Distraction? Behavioural Impacts Of Anthropogenic Noise On The European Hermit Crab Pagurus Bernhardus From Individual To Group Level, Svenja Tidau

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Human activities are altering the planet at an unprecedented scale and pace, ranging from effects on global systems such as climate and carbon cycles to localised but globally wide-spread exposure to anthropogenic pollution such as noise. Anthropogenic noise is an example of human-induced rapid environmental change (HIREC) which can mask, distract and disrupt natural stimuli and sensory-cognitive processes. Since HIREC can alter the sensory environment of animals, and how they detect and process information from their biotic and abiotic environment to make accurate decisions, this process has been termed sensory pollution. While growing evidence shows detrimental effects on across taxa, …

Development Of Autochthonous Probiotic Candidates For Tilapia Aquaculture, Rungtawan Yomla Jan 2019

Development Of Autochthonous Probiotic Candidates For Tilapia Aquaculture, Rungtawan Yomla

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

This programme of work sought to develop autochthonous probiotic solutions for tilapia aquaculture. Initial work began with the isolation of isolate 34 bacterial cultures from the tilapia intestine, which were tested for probiotic potential in vitro. Fifteen isolates displayed positive probiotic properties in in vitro assays. The selection of high potential probiotic candidates was based on multi-parameter properties using the Z−score method, which ranked isolates identified as Bacillus sp. CHP02 (Z score = 1.48), Bacillus sp. RP01 (1.14) and Bacillus sp. RP00 (1.09) as having the greatest potential. These isolates, along with Enterobacter sp. NP02 (0.50), were then assessed for …

Sediment Exchange Between The Beach And The Inner Shelf, Nieves Valiente Jan 2019

Sediment Exchange Between The Beach And The Inner Shelf, Nieves Valiente

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Embayed beaches are often considered closed sediment cells. Contrarily to this widely spread idea, recent studies suggest that the inability of certain embayments to recover to storms is a consequence of significant sediment exchange between the beach and neighbouring areas during extreme wave events; however, the physical coupling is still poorly understood. The estimation of the depth of closure in relation to the depth in front of the bounding headlands along embayed coastlines allows questioning whether embayments experience more headland bypassing than expected. The macrotidal, embayed and high-energy coastline of SW England was used as a natural field laboratory to …

Assessing The Exposure And Behavioural Response Of Grey Seals (Halichoerus Grypus) To Shipping Noise, Leah Trigg Jan 2019

Assessing The Exposure And Behavioural Response Of Grey Seals (Halichoerus Grypus) To Shipping Noise, Leah Trigg

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Marine mammals use sound to drive vital life functions such as communication, foraging and navigation, but the underwater soundscape upon which they rely is changing. Growth in global trade and manufacturing has driven a dramatic increase in the number and size of ships in the commercial fleet. These ships generate chronic underwater noise which has been associated with a number of negative ecological effects such as auditory damage, changes in behaviour and stress. As a result, regulatory bodies have recognised underwater noise as a pollutant. However, there is still a lack of data relating to the noise levels experienced by …

The Effect Of Ionising Radiation On Mussels, Emily Vernon Jan 2019

The Effect Of Ionising Radiation On Mussels, Emily Vernon

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Ionising radiations have undoubtedly played a vital role in modern society. There is however growing concern of their increasing presence in the environment whether by permitted or accidental release, along with other contaminants. While the effects of ionising radiation (IR) on human and mammalian models are well studied, the impacts on aquatic organisms, which play important roles for ecosystem sustainability are yet to be fully understood. This is particularly for chronic, low dose, environmentally relevant exposures, bearing in mind that many of the discharged radionuclides have long half-lives, to which biota are exposed. In this context a multi-biomarker, multi-species approach …

Applying Long Temporal Scale Plankton Data To Marine Strategy Development Under Climate Change, Jacob Bedford Jan 2019

Applying Long Temporal Scale Plankton Data To Marine Strategy Development Under Climate Change, Jacob Bedford

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Assessing changes in the state of marine biodiversity is critical for underpinning sustainable marine management. As the cumulative effects of multiple anthropogenic pressures on marine ecosystems are increasingly understood, and the importance of marine ecosystems in providing goods and services to society is increasingly recognised, marine management frameworks are transitioning towards an ecosystem-based approach, explicitly addressing biodiversity change. Under the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), biodiversity indicators are used to assess the state of marine ecosystems against defined targets. Plankton communities are a key component of these biodiversity assessments and indicators for both phytoplankton and zooplankton are used to …

Disease Ecology Of Two Emerging Amphibian Pathogens In Costa Rica, Felicity Jennifer Wynne Jan 2019

Disease Ecology Of Two Emerging Amphibian Pathogens In Costa Rica, Felicity Jennifer Wynne

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The emergence of infectious diseases is increasing globally, whilst biodiversity is being lost at an unprecedented rate. The amphibian chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) has driven the extinction of more species than any other known pathogen. This loss was particularly severe among Neotropical amphibians, with several infamous extinctions from Costa Rica. Although chytrid has been attributed to all enigmatic population declines in Costa Rica, its presence has only been investigated from a few populations. Alongside chytrid, another pathogen, ranavirus (Ranavirus spp.), is considered a significant threat to amphibian populations. Very little is known about ranaviruses outside of temperate regions, but its …

A Two-Fold Study Of Equine Weaning Practices And Behaviours Displayed Following Mare Removal, Catherine Mcmeeking Jan 2019

A Two-Fold Study Of Equine Weaning Practices And Behaviours Displayed Following Mare Removal, Catherine Mcmeeking

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The behavioural effects on the foal and dam during weaning in horses are well documented and it is commonly agreed that both are likely to suffer from stress at this time. Many different weaning methods are employed worldwide, with no indication of the least stress inducing. This study has two aims. First, to document frequency of weaning method, type of breeder, foal age at the time of mare removal and reason for use of weaning method. Second, to compare behaviours following abrupt and gradual weaning methods. The first aim was addressed by a questionnaire distributed globally via social media and …

Can We Distinguish Eustress From Distress In Marine Mammals? Trade-Offs In Expression Of Molecular Stress Markers And Consequences For Cell Damage And Whole-Animal Fitness Measures In Grey Seals (Halichoerus Grypus), Holly Clare Armstrong Jan 2019

Can We Distinguish Eustress From Distress In Marine Mammals? Trade-Offs In Expression Of Molecular Stress Markers And Consequences For Cell Damage And Whole-Animal Fitness Measures In Grey Seals (Halichoerus Grypus), Holly Clare Armstrong

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The ability to respond adequately to stress is crucial to an organism’s survival and fitness. Stress influences reproductive success, development, energy balance and immune responses and thus shapes life histories, population dynamics and evolutionary trajectories. Little is known about the links between cellular and whole-animal physiological stress responses in marine mammals, and their impact on tissue damage and fitness. Although stress responses may be activated under specific conditions, we need to recognise that the induction alone does not always represent a state of distress. If we are to understand the role of stress as a driver of individual health, population …

Microplastic Abundance, Distribution And Composition In The Atlantic And Arctic Oceans, La Daana Kanhai Jan 2019

Microplastic Abundance, Distribution And Composition In The Atlantic And Arctic Oceans, La Daana Kanhai

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Microplastics are ubiquitous, persistent particles that are capable of posing a threat to organisms that inhabit or depend upon marine ecosystems. Understanding the origin, transport pathways and fate of these particles in the ocean is fundamentally important when evaluating the risks associated with such particles to marine organisms. In the Atlantic Ocean, the Canary and Benguela Upwelling Ecosystems are regions of high primary productivity which sustain large commercial fisheries. The influence of oceanic phenomena such as upwellings on microplastic abundance, distribution and composition remains unknown. Any microplastics that are present within such upwelling ecosystems can potentially interact with the associated …

What Is A Bim Design Model?, James Peters, Malachy Mathews Jan 2019

What Is A Bim Design Model?, James Peters, Malachy Mathews

Conference papers

The recent report into Building Information Management or BIM, by construction law experts May Winfield and Sarah Rock entitled “Winfield Rock Report” [1] gives reason to state that the UK architectural, engineering and construction industry or AEC, is hindered by the absence of a clear definition of Level 2 BIM. The ISO 19650-2 standard published in 2019, is based upon PAS1192-2:2013. The intent of ISO 19650-2 is to provide a road map to facilitate the standardisation of BIM process in a uniformed fashion. A key pillar of ISO 19650 is the “information cycle” and central to this is a federated …

Facial Re-Enactment, Speech Synthesis And The Rise Of The Deepfake, Nicholas Gardiner Jan 2019

Facial Re-Enactment, Speech Synthesis And The Rise Of The Deepfake, Nicholas Gardiner

Theses : Honours

Emergent technologies in the fields of audio speech synthesis and video facial manipulation have the potential to drastically impact our societal patterns of multimedia consumption. At a time when social media and internet culture is plagued by misinformation, propaganda and “fake news”, their latent misuse represents a possible looming threat to fragile systems of information sharing and social democratic discourse. It has thus become increasingly recognised in both academic and mainstream journalism that the ramifications of these tools must be examined to determine what they are and how their widespread availability can be managed.

This research project seeks to examine …

‘Bloodwood’ And ‘Liminal Spaces, Timeless Places: Abjection, Liminality And Landscape In Australian Gothic Fiction’, Karleah Olson Jan 2019

‘Bloodwood’ And ‘Liminal Spaces, Timeless Places: Abjection, Liminality And Landscape In Australian Gothic Fiction’, Karleah Olson

Theses : Honours

This creative honours project comprises a work of fiction titled ‘Bloodwood’ and an accompanying exegetical essay, exploring the concept of liminal space within the Australian landscape. It investigates the anxieties and consequences of past trauma that linger within the landscape of modern Australia, exploring themes such as time, connection to nature, trauma and grief. Using Julia Kristeva’s abjection theory, particularly her ideas on liminal space, this work addresses the contentious issue of postcolonial theory within the field of literary studies, as well as the concept of grief as a liminal process. These ideas are explored through the storylines of three …

Image-Based Sexual Abuse: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Lived Experience And Perceived Consequences For Women, Brienna L. Webb Jan 2019

Image-Based Sexual Abuse: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Lived Experience And Perceived Consequences For Women, Brienna L. Webb

Theses : Honours

Being a highly convoluted and contemporaneous issue, defining and conceptualising image based sexual abuse has proved difficult for scholars. Although research on image-based sexual abuse is limited, previous inquiries have identified serious consequences and accumulative harms for affected individuals. I aimed to explore the lived experience and consequences of image-based sexual abuse as identified by women, in an attempt to taper the research dearth on this phenomenon. An in-depth qualitative phenomenological exploration of seven women’s experiences of image-based sexual abuse saw five overarching themes emerge from participants’ discourse. The themes comprised mental health impacts; perceptions of self; loss of control; …

American Option Pricing: An Accelerated Lattice Model With Intelligent Lattice Search, Qianru Shang, Brian Byrne Jan 2019

American Option Pricing: An Accelerated Lattice Model With Intelligent Lattice Search, Qianru Shang, Brian Byrne

Articles

The authors introduce to the literature an intelligent lattice search algorithm to efficiently locate the optimal exercise boundary for American options. Lattice models can be accelerated by incorporating intelligent lattice search, truncation, and dynamic memory. We reduce computational runtime from over 18 minutes down to less than 3 seconds to estimate a 15,000-step binomial tree where the results obtained are consistent with a widely acclaimed literature. Delta and implied volatility can also be accelerated relative to standard models. Lattice estimation, in general, is considered to be slow and not practical for valuing large books of options or for promptly rebalancing …

Ex-Post Service Contract Performance Management, Brian Forbes, Malcolm Brady Jan 2019

Ex-Post Service Contract Performance Management, Brian Forbes, Malcolm Brady

Articles

This paper highlights how contract incompleteness can threaten the performance of public procurement facilities management contracts during their implementation stages, based on a multiple case study comprising five public procurement services contracts. The paper takes a principle-agent view and with the unit of analysis being the contract itself. The paper shows that contract contingencies are almost inevitable and may stem from the written contract or from the participating organisations. Written and unwritten contract management mechanisms were used in practice to deal with contingencies as they arose in the services case studies examined. The paper found that written contracts do not …

Expanding University Entrepreneurial Ecosystems To Under-Represented Communities, Emma O'Brien, Thomas M. Cooney, Per Blenker Jan 2019

Expanding University Entrepreneurial Ecosystems To Under-Represented Communities, Emma O'Brien, Thomas M. Cooney, Per Blenker

Articles

Purpose – Entrepreneurship education has moved from an elitist view focussing on a start-up and picking-the-winners philosophy towards a broader enterprising behaviour approach; recognising entrepreneurship as an activity of relevance for everybody. The purpose of this paper is to extend this development and identify how university entrepreneurial ecosystems can be expanded to support communities that are under-represented in entrepreneurship.

Design/methodology/approach – Based on an integrative literature review (Torraco, 2005), this paper draws together and synthesises literature from the field of entrepreneurship, higher education studies and under-represented communities in an integrated fashion, leading to the development of a new conceptual model. …

Activity Monitoring In Professional Soccer Goalkeepers During Training And Match Play, Victor Moreno-Pérez, Shane Malone, Lluís Sala-Pérez, Manuel Lapuente-Sagarra, Miguel Angel Campos-Vazquez, Juan Del Coso

Articles

The purpose of the present study was to quantify the external load of professional soccer goalkeepers. Twenty professional goalkeepers participated in the study. Data were classified according to the number of days before or after the match day (MD) as follows: MD-4, MD-3, MD-2, MD-1 for the sessions before the match, and MD+1 for the session after the match. The total running distance covered (TD), the high metabolic load (HMLD), the number of high metabolic load efforts (HMLE) were progressively reduced from MD-4 to MD-1 but the values of these variables were always inferior to MD (ES: -3.79 to −1.11). …
