K-2 Mathematicians & Writers: Professional Learning Communities For Developing Conceptual Understanding, Doris Santarone, Angel R. Abney, Sandra M. Webb
Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has long supported the use of children’s literature, writing, and manipulatives to improve conceptual understanding of mathematics (2000). In a professional learning community for K-2 teachers, professional development was designed and implemented on ways to incorporate literacy and manipulatives into a mathematics lesson. The teachers were charged with collaboratively planning lessons that included multiple components: the standard(s), a mathematics activity, manipulatives, a writing task, and children’s literature. As the data were analyzed, it became apparent that while most of the lessons were well connected, this did not happen for all of the lessons. …

The Peer Experience For Older People Encouraging Other Older People To Engage In Resistance Training: A Qualitative Study, Elissa Burton
The Peer Experience For Older People Encouraging Other Older People To Engage In Resistance Training: A Qualitative Study, Elissa Burton
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
Resistance training (RT) can maintain and improve physical and mental health in 2 older adults, but this population has low levels of participation in RT. Linking older people 3 already participating in RT (i.e. peers) with those who have not may promote and maintain 4 adherence to RT participation. This qualitative study explored the experience of peers in 5 encouraging participation in RT among older community-dwelling adults. Data were collected 6 using focus groups, researcher observations, and semi-structured interviews. Thematic 7 analysis was conducted. Older people (n=8) who had engaged in RT for at least two months 8 prior to …

Epidemiology, Clinical Features And Outcomes Of Patients With Sickle Cell Disease Hospitalized With Influenza, Kyle P. Openo
Epidemiology, Clinical Features And Outcomes Of Patients With Sickle Cell Disease Hospitalized With Influenza, Kyle P. Openo
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Influenza is a respiratory viral infection responsible for annual epidemics, periodic pandemics and regularly causes substantial morbidity, mortality and economic burden worldwide. In the United States alone, influenza causes between 9.2 – 35.6 million cases, 140,000 to 710,000 hospitalizations and 12,000 – 56,000 deaths annually. Individuals with comorbid health conditions are at increased risk of hospitalization and severe outcomes from influenza infection and were recommended for vaccination prior to universal vaccine recommendations. Individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) have been included in this group for decades though limited data existed to describe influenza among those with SCD. Recent studies showed …

The Ancient-Future Of Worship Education: The Evangelical-Sacramental Movement's Effect On Modern Worship Education, Jordan Miles Covarelli
The Ancient-Future Of Worship Education: The Evangelical-Sacramental Movement's Effect On Modern Worship Education, Jordan Miles Covarelli
Masters Theses
This thesis looks at developments in evangelical/Pentecostal contemporary Christian worship music (CWM) in response to its theological critiques and analyzes the effects they are having on what training worship leaders will need. CWM has grown into a global phenomenon that largely either disregards or is ignorant of its theological critics. The rapid rate of churches adopting CWM practices in their services has led to numerous universities creating post-secondary degrees in Worship Leadership focused specifically on modern expressions of worship. This thesis uses a convergent parallel mixed methods research model to analyze how worship practices are changing in key evangelical-turned-sacramental churches …

The Sensitivity Of Marginally Stratified Shelf Sea Fronts To Turbulent Mixing Processes, Marcus Zanacchi
The Sensitivity Of Marginally Stratified Shelf Sea Fronts To Turbulent Mixing Processes, Marcus Zanacchi
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Turbulent mixing plays an important role in controlling the vertical structure of temperature, salinity and density in shelf seas. It is crucial in controlling the seasonal stratification in temperate shelf seas, though our incomplete knowledge of the processes involved prevents an accurate representation in numerical shelf sea modelling. This study made use of both observational field work and numerical turbulence modelling to identify first- and second-order mixing mechanisms in weakly stratified waters in the Celtic Sea, U.K. Field work was conducted both in spring (May, 2012) and summer (August, 2012). During the 11-day field work in spring, an overall warming …

Bioturbation In Estuarine Sediments: Modelling Macrofauna-Mediated Oxygen Dynamics, Xiaoyu Fang
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The aim of this thesis was to provide a comprehensive examination of the roles of macrofauna in estuarine biogeochemistry by adopting a multidisciplinary field and laboratory-based approach and integrating species distribution modelling with biomass-dependent ecosystem function relationships. Eventually, an ecosystem management tool to provide insights into the ecological consequences of anthropogenic disturbance in estuaries was developed using the Western Scheldt as a model system. To establish a baseline understanding of the spatio-temporal patterns of macrobenthos (activities) and ecosystem functioning in the Scheldt estuary, a seasonal survey was carried out during four consecutive seasons in 2015 and 2016, sampling three habitats …
The Dietary Bioaccumulation And Detection Of Engineered Nanosilver In Fish, Nathaniel Clark
The Dietary Bioaccumulation And Detection Of Engineered Nanosilver In Fish, Nathaniel Clark
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Emerging contaminants, including engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), need to undergo environmental risk assessment, whereby they are tested for properties of persistence in the environment, toxicity or bioaccumulation. To date, little data exists for the bioaccumulation of ENMs in animals, particularly fish, with a focus on alternative methods to in vivo testing. Also, interpretation of data for hazard assessment is hampered by the lack of routine methods to detect the form of materials in the tissues following exposure. Therefore, there were three main aims to the thesis; the first was to determine the dietary accumulation of ENMs into fish, using a tiered …
Human Impacts On Oligotrophic Marine Ecosystems: Case Studies From Cyprus, Mediterranean Sea, Demetris Kletou
Human Impacts On Oligotrophic Marine Ecosystems: Case Studies From Cyprus, Mediterranean Sea, Demetris Kletou
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Highly oligotrophic marine waters cover about a third of the Earth’s surface and have diverse communities that are affected by multiple stressors, such as ocean acidification, warming, marine litter, pollution, overfishing. The low nutrient Mediterranean Sea has high biodiversity and endemism but is heavily impacted by these human pressures and a recent major influx of invasive alien species that compete, predate and infect indigenous species. Aquaculture effluents and eutrophication alter water quality and add pressure on coastal ecosystems that are already subject to habitat loss and degradation due to coastal developments. This PhD dissertation reviews human impacts on highly oligotrophic …
The Sources And Fate Of Plastic Entering The Marine Environment, Imogen Napper
The Sources And Fate Of Plastic Entering The Marine Environment, Imogen Napper
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Plastics can come in many forms and bring a wide range of societal benefits in healthcare, agriculture, transport, construction and packaging. However, plastic is a large proportion of marine litter and an internationally recognised pollutant. Marine litter results from the indiscriminate disposal of waste items that are either directly or indirectly transferred into aquatic environments. This debris can cause harmful effects for wildlife, commercial fisheries, maritime industries, tourism and human well-being (Chapter 1). Over the past decade, increased scientific interest has produced an expanding knowledge base for plastic contamination in the environment. However, fundamental questions and issues remain unresolved. This …

On The Inability Of Markov Models To Capture Criticality In Human Mobility, Vaibhav Klukarni, Abhijit Mahalunkar, Benoit Garbinato, John Kelleher
Conference papers
We examine the non-Markovian nature of human mobility by exposing the inability of Markov models to capture criticality in human mobility. In particular, the assumed Markovian nature of mobility was used to establish an upper bound on the predictability of human mobility, based on the temporal entropy. Since its inception, this bound has been widely used for validating the performance of mobility prediction models. We show that the variants of recurrent neural network architectures can achieve significantly higher prediction accuracy surpassing this upper bound. The central objective of our work is to show that human-mobility dynamics exhibit criticality characteristics which …

The Evolution Of Cognitive Load Theory And The Measurement Of Its Intrinsic, Extraneous And Germane Loads: A Review, Giuliana Orru, Luca Longo
Conference papers
Cognitive Load Theory has been conceived for supporting instructional design through the use of the construct of cognitive load. This is believed to be built upon three types of load: intrinsic, extraneous and germane. Although Cognitive Load Theory and its assumptions are clear and well-known, its three types of load have been going through a continuous investigation and re-definition. Additionally, it is still not clear whether these are independent and can be added to each other towards an overall measure of load. The purpose of this research is to inform the reader about the theoretical evolution of Cognitive Load Theory …
