Life Cycle Analysis (Lca) Models And Their Value For Solid Waste Planning, David J. Tonjes
Life Cycle Analysis (Lca) Models And Their Value For Solid Waste Planning, David J. Tonjes
Technology & Society Faculty Publications
Solid waste management is a complex undertaking that addresses a basic human need. Wastes can affect human health and the environment. Managing them so as to reduce and minimize these impacts requires expending physical and human resources. Often there are trade-offs among the effects associated with technological and policy choices.
Generally, understanding the effects of the various choices requires expanding scope beyond the immediate issue. Recycling, for instance, reduces disposal needs. It also affects the inputs to manufacturing processes, and can reduce the demand to extract natural resources. A larger perspective on recycling can provide justifications for increasing diversion efforts. …

Modeling And Control Of The Ugv Argo J5 With A Custom-Built Landing Platform, Mohammed Aldaoseri Alghanim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to develop a detailed dynamic model and implement several navigation controllers for path tracking and dynamic self-leveling of the Argo J5 Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) with a custom-built landing platform. The overall model is derived by combining the Argo J5 driveline system with the wheelsterrain interaction (using terramechanics theory and mobile robot kinetics), while the landing platform model follows the Euler-Lagrange formulation. Different controllers are, then, derived, implemented to demonstrate: i.) self-leveling accuracy of the landing platform, ii.) trajectory tracking capabilities of the Argo J5 when moving in uneven terrains. The novelty of the Argo J5 model …
The Impact Of University Writing Curriculum On Preservice Teachers' Praxis I Scores, Virginia Ann Braithwaite
The Impact Of University Writing Curriculum On Preservice Teachers' Praxis I Scores, Virginia Ann Braithwaite
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Until 2014, admission requirements for the educator preparation program at a university in the north central United States included a minimum competency level on the Praxis I basic skills writing test and completion of one general education writing course. However, evidence from the university's ETS reports showed that less than 60% of students as first-time test-takers met the required score. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the required writing course in assisting students to meet the Praxis I writing competencies. In 2014, the ETS Core Academic Skills for Educators test replaced the Praxis I. Because …

The Political Power Of Twitter, James Usher, Pierpaolo Dondio, Lucia Morales
Conference papers
In June 2016, the British voted by 52 per cent to leave the EU, a club the UK joined in 1973. This paper examines Twitter public and political party discourse surrounding the BREXIT withdrawal agreement. In particular, we focus on tweets from four different BREXIT exit strategies known as “Norway”, “Article 50”, the “Backstop” and “No Deal” and their effect on the pound and FTSE 100 index from the period of December 10th 2018 to February 24th 2019. Our approach focuses on using a Naive Bayes classification algorithm to assess political party and public Twitter sentiment. A Granger causality analysis …
Preparing Pre-Service Teachers To Teach Media Literacy: A Response To “Fake News”, Todd S. Cherner, Kristal Curry
Preparing Pre-Service Teachers To Teach Media Literacy: A Response To “Fake News”, Todd S. Cherner, Kristal Curry
Educational Sciences and Organizations
The call for integrating media literacy into public education is not new. However, with the rise of “fake news” and sensationalism along with technology’s ever-growing role in society, media literacy offers teachers and students a set of skills to analyze, critique, and respond to the information that appears before them in the digital texts they read, the television shows they watch, and their social media feeds. As multiple case studies have identified ways teachers are already blending media literacy into their instruction, this case study used a lesson plan assignment coupled with a survey to analyze how pre-service teachers enrolled …

Kurdish Culture And Identity: Building The Homeland In Tennessee, Steve Wininger
Kurdish Culture And Identity: Building The Homeland In Tennessee, Steve Wininger
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without their own state, and are one of the most controversial, overlooked and understudied ethnic groups in academic research. In the field of communication, there is very little research of the Kurdish diaspora in the United States. Identity is a complex subject in itself, but for the Kurds it is even more complicated because of the controversy surrounding them, their claims, and their status as a stateless ethnic group. The necessity for the Kurds to keep their culture and identity has cost them their freedom, homes, and lives, yet they …

The Effects Of Academic Success Coaching On First-Year Students, Mark A. Minglin
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Student retention has been of increasing concern for college and university administrators for over the last 20 years, but the need for more effective strategies to address retention issues has never been more of a pressing matter than it is today (Allen, D. F. & Bir, 2012). Some research (Bettinger & Baker, 2011; Dansinger, 2000; Griffiths, 2012; Knight, 2012) has identified peer academic success coaching as potential intervention strategy to address the retention issue in higher Education. Relatively few studies have addressed the assessment of these coaching interventions and the majority have been qualitative in nature. The purpose of this …

Theses & Dissertations
Absorption refers to the phenomenon of total attentional engagement. The purpose of the current study was to gain a preliminary understanding of the roles that absorption may have in different music therapy approaches. The research questions were: a) How might music therapists know when their clients are in states of absorption?, b) How might absorption influence the ability of music therapy clients to progress towards therapeutic goals?, and c) What is the potential relationship between absorption and music? Three music therapists with self-identified expertise and experience in conceptualizing absorption in music therapy were interviewed about their observations and opinions of …
Dialogic Teaching In A Detracked High School Ela Class: "We Talk Here", Signy Emler
Dialogic Teaching In A Detracked High School Ela Class: "We Talk Here", Signy Emler
Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation combines the two fields of dialogic teaching and detracking in a study of one teacher’s English Language Arts high school classroom. The policy of tracking students into separate academic classes perpetuates segregation and is antithetical to the principles of democracy. Dialogic teaching is where students and the teacher engage in inquiry and exploratory talk to co-construct knowledge, and all students are provided with frequent opportunities to express their voices. Grounded in theory that views language and identity as socially constructed and situated, this qualitative case study examined how students from different racial, socio-economic, political and cultural backgrounds worked …

Motivative augmentals are rules or statements that temporarily change the effectiveness of a consequence, similar to establishing operations for nonverbal consequences (Hayes, Barnes-Holmes, & Roche, 2001). Many communications by an organization's leadership may function as such and alter the function of stimuli in the workplace, which in turn may influence employee behaviors (Houmanfar & Rodrigues, 2012). There is a lack of experimental research regarding this, however, particularly under different organizational pay systems (i.e., financial contingencies), which have been repeatedly shown to influence performance (e.g., Gupta & Shaw, 1998; Locke, Feren, McCaleb, Shaw, & Denny, 1980). The current study sought to …

The Potential Benefits Of Flexibility For Dissemination And Implementation: Acceptance And Commitment Therapy As An Example, Michael E. Levin, Brooke M. Smith, Gregory S. Smith
Psychology Faculty Publications
Our commentary on the article by Fixsen and Blase (2018) highlights some of the converging and diverging strategies between the Teaching-Family Model (TFM) and the dissemination and implementation of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). We focus primarily on the potential benefits of flexibility in areas including theory, methodology, and intervention protocols. Examples include the use of middle level terms, randomized controlled trial methods, protocols focused more on function than specific topography, and an open, collaborative approach to dissemination. We also note how this broader set of strategies can be made coherent and progressive through a careful connection back to contextual …

This study examined the function of hoarding behaviors and the relations between hoarding and a series of cognitive and affective processes in the moment using ecological momentary assessment. A matched-groups design was used to compare college students with higher hoarding symptoms (n = 31) and matched controls (n = 29). The two groups did not differ in what function they reported acquiring served, and positive automatic reinforcement was the most commonly reported function in both groups. Engaging in hoarding-relevant behaviors did not predict change in positive or negative affect when controlling for previous affect. Emotional reactivity and experiential avoidance in …

Outreach Assessment: A Two-Pronged Approach, John M. Jackson
Outreach Assessment: A Two-Pronged Approach, John M. Jackson
Librarian Publications & Presentations
“Outreach Librarian” is one of those nebulous terms that seems to encompass a universe of possibilities as it stretches the phrase “other duties as assigned” to its breaking point. One can easily find outreach librarians housed within almost every department known to libraries: in reference departments as instruction designers, in communications departments as marketing directors, in administration units as program coordinators, and in collections departments as faculty liaisons. Determining how to assess the activities of an outreach librarian is no less complex than the myriad nature of the job itself. To that end, it is probably worth noting from the …
