School of Health Professions

Background Caregivers frequently provide support to people living with long-term conditions. However, there is paucity of evidence of interventions that support caregivers in their role. Rehabilitation EnAblement in Chronic Heart Failure (REACH-HF) is a novel home-based, health-professional-facilitated, self-management programme for patients with heart failure (HF) and their caregivers. Methods Based on the random allocation of individual adult patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and left ventricular ejection fraction <45% within the past five years, the caregiver of patients was allocated to receive the REACH-HF intervention over 12 weeks (REACH-HF group) or not (control group). Caregiver outcomes were generic health-related quality of life (EQ-5D-5L), Family Caregiver Quality of Life Scale questionnaire (FamQol), Caregiver Burden Questionnaire HF (CBQ-HF), Caregiver Contribution to Self-care of HF Index questionnaire (CC-SCHFI) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Outcomes were compared between groups at 4, 6 and 12 months follow-up. Twenty caregivers receiving REACH-HF were purposively selected for qualitative interviews at 4 and 12 months. Results Compared with controls (44 caregivers), the REACH-HF group (53 caregivers) had a higher mean CC-SCHFI confidence score at 12 months (57.5 vs 62.8, adjusted mean difference: 9.3, 95% confidence interval: 1.8–16.8, p = 0.016). No significant between group differences were seen in other caregiver outcomes. Qualitative interviews showed that most caregivers who received the REACH-HF intervention made positive changes to how they supported the HF patient they were caring for, and perceived that they had increased their confidence in the caregiver role over time. Conclusion Provision of the REACH-HF intervention for caregivers of HF patients improved their confidence of self-management and was perceived for some to be helpful in supporting their caregiver role.

Purpose: This research aims at investigating the moderating role of co-creation in the implementation of servitization strategies in the pharmaceutical industry in a B-to-B context. More specifically, this investigation explores the impact of different levels of services (base, intermediate and advanced) on servitization and on performance, using co-creation as a moderating factor. Design/methodology/approach: A research framework was developed and empirically tested in the pharmaceutical sector. Data collection was conducted through the online distribution of questionnaires. The final sample included 219 pharmacy stores and the data was analysed using structural equation modelling. Findings: Main findings suggest that when the level of …

The Hydrothermal Rare Earth Element Mineralisation At The Peralkaline Carbonatite Fen Complex In Norway, Christian Marien Jan 2019

The Hydrothermal Rare Earth Element Mineralisation At The Peralkaline Carbonatite Fen Complex In Norway, Christian Marien

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The Fen Complex in Norway consists of a composite carbonatite-ijolite-pyroxenite diatreme intrusion. Locally, the hydrothermally altered, hematite-rich rock rødbergite exhibited high grades (up to 2.1 wt% REE) of rare earth elements (REE). In order to secure the supply of REE for future technology markets in Europe, it becomes increasingly important to establish potential domestic REE sources like the Fen Complex. This project aims to develop a model for the carbonatite-hosted hydrothermal REE deposit (‘Rødbergite’) in the Fen Complex, Norway. SEM and ICP-MS trace element analyses of 73 bulk samples taken along various geological key transects showed the transformation of carbonatite, …

Fighting The "Three Evils": A Structural Analysis Of Counter-Terrorism Legal Architecture In China, Enshen Li

Emory International Law Review

In the aftermath of September 11 attacks, China has not been immune to the global trend of destructive terrorism. However, China's perceptions of terrorism and legal responses to it greatly diverge from those of other countries. This Article first seeks to understand the cause, source, and impact of terrorist threats in China, known as 'Three Evils''terrorism, extremism, and separatism, through a critical inquiry of the country's ethnic and religious policies. It then proceeds to delineate China's legal framework for combating the 'Three Evils' to explore the cultural characteristics of the government's approach against these rising threats. Protecting Human Rights In African Countries: International Law, Domestic Constitutional Interpretation, The Responsibility To Protect, And Presidential Immunities, John Mukum Mbaku Jan 2019

Protecting Human Rights In African Countries: International Law, Domestic Constitutional Interpretation, The Responsibility To Protect, And Presidential Immunities, John Mukum Mbaku

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

In the aftermath of the Cold War, Africans redoubled their efforts to fight impunity and violations of human rights. This renewed effort, however, was part of the struggle that started during the colonial period by Africans to free themselves from European domination and exploitation. Unfortunately, most post-independence African States failed to fully transform the critical domains and provide themselves with institutional arrangements capable of adequately constraining their civil servants and political elites. As a consequence, these countries came to be pervaded by high levels of government impunity, particularly the violation of human rights. During the last several decades, however, grassroots …

Mens Rea Reform As A Demand-Side Solution To The Problem Of Sex Trafficking, Daniel Michael Criswell Jan 2019

Mens Rea Reform As A Demand-Side Solution To The Problem Of Sex Trafficking, Daniel Michael Criswell

Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law

Trafficking in persons has existed around the world for many years, yet the United States has only begun to take this modem form of slavery seriously in the last two decades. The nature of sex trafficking has caused confusion for the United States and others around the globe regarding how to best deal with the commercial sex industry. The failure to reduce the commercial sex industry through traditional means of prosecuting the traffickers and their victims has motivated Sweden, and consequently the United States, to pursue a different strategy: reducing the demand through the prosecution of the buyers of commercial …

World War Web: Rethinking "Aiding And Abetting" In The Social Media Age, Rebecca J. Cambron Jan 2019

World War Web: Rethinking "Aiding And Abetting" In The Social Media Age, Rebecca J. Cambron

Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law

ISIS's use of social media presents a new challenge for counterterror efforts. The organization aims to recruit followers and incite violence through social media. Given that this is a new medium for terrorist organizations, social media companies have come under fire for indirectly providing ISIS with farreaching platforms to spread its content. The companies, as well as national governments and international entities, have attempted to respond to the threat posed by such content. These responses, however, have proven ineffective. This Note argues that to effectively respond to and combat the threat posed by terrorist speech, national governments should adopt a …

An Institutional Theory Of Corporate Regulation, Iris H-Y Chiu Jan 2019

An Institutional Theory Of Corporate Regulation, Iris H-Y Chiu

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The regulation of corporate behavior has persisted in spite of peaks of neo-liberalism in many developed jurisdictions of the world, including the U.K. This paradox is described as “regulatory capitalism” by a number of scholars. Of particular note is the proliferation of corporate regulation to govern “socially responsible” behavior in recent legislative reforms in the EU and U.K. In seeking to answer the broader question of whether corporate regulation indeed effectively governs and moderates corporate behavior, this paper focuses on the nature of corporate regulation. Although different pieces of corporate regulation purport to achieve different objectives and impose different types …

Crouching Tigers And Hidden Dragons On The Great Wall Street: Decoding The Corporate Goverance Of Chinese Commercial Banks, Yueh-Ping (Alex) Yang Jan 2019

Crouching Tigers And Hidden Dragons On The Great Wall Street: Decoding The Corporate Goverance Of Chinese Commercial Banks, Yueh-Ping (Alex) Yang

Washington International Law Journal

As China’s economic influence on the world grows, its system of state capitalism is likewise receiving increasing scrutiny. Behind the state capitalism, China’s banking sector, the “Great Wall Street”—parallel to the “Wall Street” in the United States—plays a fundamental role in financing and supporting China’s economy. Contemporary studies of China’s state capitalism, however, focus mainly on Chinese state-owned enterprises, leaving less attention specific to China’s state-owned banking sector which adopts a rather different corporate governance practice. In this paper, I conduct a comprehensive and critical review of the bank governance practice in China. Statutorily, Chinese commercial banks generally follow corporate …

Uniform Interpretation Of Cisg Jan 2019

Uniform Interpretation Of Cisg

The International Lawyer

This UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) has been U.S. law for a generation and requires that it be interpreted “to promote uniformity in its application”. This article argues that uniform interpretation is impractical because 1) it is written in six official languages which do not always mean the same thing; 2) with more than 90 countries’ courts and arbitrators applying CISG, each in its own language, some of which do not regularly print their opinions, it is difficult to access all opinions on a single point; 3) since Civil Law countries consider the writings …

Two- And Three-Year-Olds Consider Ownership When Selecting And Allocating Resources, M Petrowski, Patricia Kanngiesser, Ori Friedman Jan 2019

Two- And Three-Year-Olds Consider Ownership When Selecting And Allocating Resources, M Petrowski, Patricia Kanngiesser, Ori Friedman

School of Psychology

In three experiments, we investigated whether 2- and 3-year-olds (N = 240) consider ownership when taking resources for themselves and allocating resources to another agent. When selecting resources for themselves, children generally avoided taking resources that belonged to another agent and instead favored their own resources (Experiments 1 and 2). However, they did not avoid taking the agent’s resources when the only other resources available were described as not belonging to the agent (Experiment 3). Children also selected fewer of the agent’s resources when taking for themselves than when giving to the agent (Experiments 2 and 3). In giving to …
