Dialogic Teaching In A Detracked High School Ela Class: "We Talk Here", Signy Emler Jan 2019

Dialogic Teaching In A Detracked High School Ela Class: "We Talk Here", Signy Emler

Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation combines the two fields of dialogic teaching and detracking in a study of one teacher’s English Language Arts high school classroom. The policy of tracking students into separate academic classes perpetuates segregation and is antithetical to the principles of democracy. Dialogic teaching is where students and the teacher engage in inquiry and exploratory talk to co-construct knowledge, and all students are provided with frequent opportunities to express their voices. Grounded in theory that views language and identity as socially constructed and situated, this qualitative case study examined how students from different racial, socio-economic, political and cultural backgrounds worked …

Methodology: Interpretive phenomenology was used to better understand the meaning of 11 U.S. female veterans’ experiences. Semi-structured telephone interviews and the analytic approach of Martin …

Assessing The Effects Of Motivative Augmentals, Pay-For-Performance, And Implicit Verbal Responding On Cooperation, Sharlet D. Rafacz, Ramona A. Houmanfar, Gregory S. Smith, Michael E. Levin Jan 2019

Assessing The Effects Of Motivative Augmentals, Pay-For-Performance, And Implicit Verbal Responding On Cooperation, Sharlet D. Rafacz, Ramona A. Houmanfar, Gregory S. Smith, Michael E. Levin

Psychology Faculty Publications

Motivative augmentals are rules or statements that temporarily change the effectiveness of a consequence, similar to establishing operations for nonverbal consequences (Hayes, Barnes-Holmes, & Roche, 2001). Many communications by an organization's leadership may function as such and alter the function of stimuli in the workplace, which in turn may influence employee behaviors (Houmanfar & Rodrigues, 2012). There is a lack of experimental research regarding this, however, particularly under different organizational pay systems (i.e., financial contingencies), which have been repeatedly shown to influence performance (e.g., Gupta & Shaw, 1998; Locke, Feren, McCaleb, Shaw, & Denny, 1980). The current study sought to …

The Potential Benefits Of Flexibility For Dissemination And Implementation: Acceptance And Commitment Therapy As An Example, Michael E. Levin, Brooke M. Smith, Gregory S. Smith

Psychology Faculty Publications

Our commentary on the article by Fixsen and Blase (2018) highlights some of the converging and diverging strategies between the Teaching-Family Model (TFM) and the dissemination and implementation of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). We focus primarily on the potential benefits of flexibility in areas including theory, methodology, and intervention protocols. Examples include the use of middle level terms, randomized controlled trial methods, protocols focused more on function than specific topography, and an open, collaborative approach to dissemination. We also note how this broader set of strategies can be made coherent and progressive through a careful connection back to contextual …

Outreach Assessment: A Two-Pronged Approach, John M. Jackson Jan 2019

Outreach Assessment: A Two-Pronged Approach, John M. Jackson

Librarian Publications & Presentations

“Outreach Librarian” is one of those nebulous terms that seems to encompass a universe of possibilities as it stretches the phrase “other duties as assigned” to its breaking point. One can easily find outreach librarians housed within almost every department known to libraries: in reference departments as instruction designers, in communications departments as marketing directors, in administration units as program coordinators, and in collections departments as faculty liaisons. Determining how to assess the activities of an outreach librarian is no less complex than the myriad nature of the job itself. To that end, it is probably worth noting from the …

Assessing The Relational Nature Of Child Physical Abuse And Neglect Among 12-Year-Old Girls, Corrine Ann Dale

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Child maltreatment is a historical and current problem in the United States. Children are exposed to physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse in alarming numbers. In 2014, state agencies found an estimated 702,000 victims of child maltreatment. With two thirds of this group representing child neglect victims, research studies and effective interventions are needed for this group in particular. This study examined the relational nature of child neglect versus child physical abuse. The sample population consisted of 68 girls aged 12 years old at the Midwest site of the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect research project. The secondary …

Public Service Announcements To Promote Physical Activity, Jennifer Erickson, Jay Greiner

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The World Health Organization promotes physical activity (PA) as important for successful maintenance of health, but many individuals are inactive. Despite the potential for public service announcements (PSAs) to communicate health information and promote behavior change, no previous research on developing video PSAs to promote PA was found. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine how video PSAs designed for public health campaigns affect future levels of intention to engage in PA. The PSAs assessed perceived effectiveness of message foci and the impact of stage of change readiness. They were developed specifically for this study using the model …

An Analysis Of Operator Eye Behavior When Monitoring Simulated, Petrochemical Manufacturing, Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition Alerts And Warnings With Background Noise, Angela Huenerfauth Jan 2019

An Analysis Of Operator Eye Behavior When Monitoring Simulated, Petrochemical Manufacturing, Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition Alerts And Warnings With Background Noise, Angela Huenerfauth

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are a number of potential distractions for operators when viewing plant status-monitoring information in a petrochemical plant: background noises of other employees speaking, sounds of manufacturing equipment and processes and other ambient noises like HVAC and building operation noise. When the monitoring equipment for a chemical or petrochemical plant is not designed to take into account that operators can be distracted by this noise, there is a potential safety hazard for the people in that work environment. Alarms can be missed and fundamental information can be overlooked. SCADA is a type of control system that collects and displays data …

Preparing School Counselors In Training To Implement English As A Second Language (Esl) Strategies During Classroom Lessons, Leonissa Johnson, Amy Cain Jan 2019

Preparing School Counselors In Training To Implement English As A Second Language (Esl) Strategies During Classroom Lessons, Leonissa Johnson, Amy Cain

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

School counselors provide academic, social-emotional, and college and career access information to all students via core curriculum classroom lessons. English Learners benefit from differentiated classroom instruction that makes content engaging and accessible. Despite this need for differentiated instruction, few educators have received English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching strategies training. This mixed methods study examined how an ESL teaching strategies workshop influenced the utilization of these approaches by school counselors in training. A triangulation mixed methods design was used to collect complementary data about participant behavior and thinking. Modeling ESL strategies alone did not yield statistically significant differences in …

Teaching Hidden History: A Case Study Of Dialogic Scaffolding In A Hybrid Graduate Course, Amy K. Swan, Nathan M. Sleeter, Kelly Schrum Jan 2019

Teaching Hidden History: A Case Study Of Dialogic Scaffolding In A Hybrid Graduate Course, Amy K. Swan, Nathan M. Sleeter, Kelly Schrum

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Using an expanded version of Alexander’s (2008) theory of dialogic teaching developed by Rojas-Drummond, Torreblanca, Pedraza, Vélez, and Guzmán (2013), this case study explored how instructors and students in a hybrid graduate course engaged in the process of dialogic teaching and learning (DTL). In particular, we examined the ways in which scaffolding strategies used in the course supported inquiry-based learning. Our findings suggest that instructors and students engaged in all five dimensions of DTL as defined by Rojas-Drummond et al. (2013), and illuminate the ways in which scaffolding can facilitate inquiry-based learning in interdisciplinary instructional settings.

Indoor Positioning Using Multiple Signal Sources (Modes), Vishal Chummar Perekadan Jan 2019

Indoor Positioning Using Multiple Signal Sources (Modes), Vishal Chummar Perekadan

Theses

Computation of accurate indoor positioning information is important in several application areas like mobile robotics, navigation, virtual reality and ubiquitous computing. In spite of its importance we still do not have an indoor positioning system equivalent to the Global Positioning System~(GPS), which is the standard for large scale outdoor positioning, but is unreliable or unavailable in indoor environments. In this work, we present a multi-source radio frequency(RF) based system for automatic indoor positioning using the received signal strength (RSS) and demonstrate its efficacy by simultaneously using broadcast FM radio & GSM signals for position estimation. This method is data driven …

Structural Engineering Of The Antifungal High Mannose Binding Lectin Myxovirin, Jessica L. Osier Jan 2019

Structural Engineering Of The Antifungal High Mannose Binding Lectin Myxovirin, Jessica L. Osier

Theses

The pathogenic encapsulated yeast Cryptococcus neoformans causes a majority of fungal disease related deaths worldwide from pulmonary infections, meningitis, or meningoencephalitis. Loss of efficacy in current treatment options against C. neoformans and the emergence of antifungal drug resistance call for the development of new therapeutics. High mannose binding lectins such as Scytovirin have been shown to be promising anticryptococcal drug candidates. In this work, a homologous antifungal lectin, Myxovirin, was structurally engineered in an effort to improve both its carbohydrate binding affinity and its anticryptococcal activity. Carbohydrate binding was studied using both isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and nuclear magnetic resonance …

Evaluating And Forecasting Development Within Riparian Corridors In North Alabama For Conservation, Leah Parker Jan 2019

Evaluating And Forecasting Development Within Riparian Corridors In North Alabama For Conservation, Leah Parker

As urban development continues to spread from urban centers, natural riparian corridors and their ecosystem services are becoming at risk. This study utilized the Riparian Buffer Delineation Model, the National Land Cover Database, and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to evaluate and summarize historical land cover changes and vegetation health within variable-width riparian corridors between 2001 and 2016 in Madison County and Limestone County of North Alabama. The TerrSet Land Change Modeler was used to predict the risk of urban development by 2030 based on historical land cover trends and driver variables. The predicted future risk of urban development …

Complexity Assessment Using Systems Modelling Language Models, Victor Emmanuel Pierre Lopez Jan 2019

Complexity Assessment Using Systems Modelling Language Models, Victor Emmanuel Pierre Lopez

Theses

A complexity metric was proposed for the quantification of system complexity using information about the composition of a system and its interactions depicted in a System Modelling Language (SysML) model. The proposed metric was adapted from the complexity metric developed by Sinha and Suh for design structure matrix (DSM) applications, and was modified to allow the proposed metric to be applied at different decomposition levels and to accommodate the inclusion of external interactions. The metric was applied to three case studies: an aircraft engine, a Mars lander, and a spacecraft thermal control system. The proposed metric attributed a higher amount …
