Learning From The Past To Educate The Future: An Analysis Of The Modern Classical School, Miranda Boljat
Learning From The Past To Educate The Future: An Analysis Of The Modern Classical School, Miranda Boljat
Senior Honors Theses
Classical schooling combines the wisdom of thousands of years of learning with the knowledge necessary to succeed in today’s world. Despite the antiquity of some of these ideas, the movement has continued to grow in both number of schools and also number of students attending, measuring almost 100 new schools each decade since 1993. One of the motives for this growth is how Classical schools utilize a curriculum which includes the trivium, Latin, and the Great Books of Western Civilization. Together, these elements of the curriculum lead to improved test scores and general college readiness.
Face Detection Ensemble With Methods Using Depth Information To Filter False Positives, Loris Nanni, Sheryl Brahnam, Alessandra Lumini
Face Detection Ensemble With Methods Using Depth Information To Filter False Positives, Loris Nanni, Sheryl Brahnam, Alessandra Lumini
College of Business
All rights reserved. A fundamental problem in computer vision is face detection. In this paper, an experimentally derived ensemble made by a set of six face detectors is presented that maximizes the number of true positives while simultaneously reducing the number of false positives produced by the ensemble. False positives are removed using different filtering steps based primarily on the characteristics of the depth map related to the subwindows of the whole image that contain candidate faces. A new filtering approach based on processing the image with different wavelets is also proposed here. The experimental results show that the applied …

Appraisal Confusion: The Intended And Unintended Consequences Of Delaware's Nascent Pristine Deal Process Standard, Alex Peña, Brian Jm Quinn
Appraisal Confusion: The Intended And Unintended Consequences Of Delaware's Nascent Pristine Deal Process Standard, Alex Peña, Brian Jm Quinn
Marquette Law Review
In a merger, shareholders who believe the consideration being offered is too low have a statutory right to seek fair value for their shares through a judicial process called appraisal. In recent years, there has been an explosion in the number of appraisal actions leading some to argue that the remedy was being abused. In this Article, we argue that a recent line of cases by the Delaware Supreme Court that places heavy reliance on merger price as part of the judicial determination of fair value in appraisal proceedings is misguided and may lead to unintended consequences. Rather than rely …

The Emergence Of Southern Dialectical Features In Native Spanish-Speaking English Language Learners In The American Deep South, Ana Chua
Honors Theses
It is generally assumed that students who study a target language in a particular country or region will gain the dialectical features of the place in which they had studied. While the current body of research generally supports this finding, dialectical adaptation to a specific area does not occur equally among all individuals, and studies that attempt to explain this resulting degree of dialectical adaptation based on individual and social factors is one that still needs greater attention. This investigation sought to examine the extent of dialectical adaptation to Southern American English (SAE) in six Spanish-speaking English Language Learners who …

Assessing The Impact Of Computer-Based Simulations On The Interprofessional Education Of Undergraduate Students, Heather Isaacson
All NMU Master's Theses
Interprofessional Education (IPE) is not unique as it is a concept that has been advocated for more than 40 years by the Institute of Medicine (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], 2016). Interprofessional education occurs “when two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes” (World Health Organization [WHO], 2010, p. 13). It is a staple in the education of nurses and doctors; however, it is starting to make an appearance in Communication Sciences and Disorders programs. As a result, this is a topic of great interest to faculty teaching in the …
China's Maritime Grand Strategy, Sarah Quan
China's Maritime Grand Strategy, Sarah Quan
Undergraduate Honors Theses
China’s goals in the South China Sea are twofold: to expand sovereignty while keeping the peace. I argue this is accomplished through rhetorical strategic ambiguity and military clarity, which have characterized China’s maritime grand strategy since 2010. Using confusion and clarity—two seemingly opposite strategies—allows China to simultaneously expand sovereignty and maintain peace. This paper first introduces the literature and theory behind grand strategy and strategic ambiguity. It then demonstrates how China’s intentions are made clear through military actions, then shows that China’s rhetoric is ambiguous to members of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) by weighing evidence that China is …

With the fast development of Internet of Things, huge volume of data is being collected from various sensors and devices, aggregated at gateways, and processed in the cloud. Due to privacy concern, data are usually encrypted before being outsourced to the cloud. However, encryption seriously impedes both computation over the data and sharing of the computation results. Computing maximum and minimum among a data set are two of the most basic operations in machine learning and data mining algorithms. In this paper, we study how to compute maximum and minimum over encrypted data and control the access to the computation …
Controlling Strain Energy Density In 3d Cellular Collagen Constructs During Complex Loads, Katherine Hollar
Controlling Strain Energy Density In 3d Cellular Collagen Constructs During Complex Loads, Katherine Hollar
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Mechanical stimulation applied to damaged soft tissues, such as ligament, can promote tissue remodeling to accelerate healing. To help identify treatments that encourage ligament healing, bioreactors have been designed to subject 3D cellularized constructs to various loading conditions in order to determine the mechanical mechanisms that trigger cell-mediated repair. An innovative approach is to use a bioreactor to apply controlled states of biaxial stress to study the effects of strain energy density and distortion energy on cell activity. Tissue distortion has been linked to changes in the structure and function of ligament, yet the specific impact of distortion energy on …

Detection And Countermeasure Of Saturation Attacks In Software-Defined Networks, Samer Yousef Khamaiseh
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The decoupling of control and data planes in software-defined networking (SDN) facilitates orchestrating the network traffic. However, SDN suffers from critical security issues, such as DoS saturation attacks on the data plane. These attacks can exhaust the SDN component resources, including the computational resources of the control plane, create a high packet loss rate and a long delay in delivering the OpenFlow messages due to the bandwidth consumption of the OpenFlow connection channel, and exhausting the buffer memory of the data plane.
Currently, most of the existing machine learning detection methods rely on a predefined time-window to start analyzing the …
