Grassroots-Initiated Policy Advocacy In A Transitional Democracy: A Case Study, Cho Myint Naing
Grassroots-Initiated Policy Advocacy In A Transitional Democracy: A Case Study, Cho Myint Naing
Capstone Collection
While it is acknowledged that public participation in the policy-making process is a cornerstone of democracy, it is unclear how this takes shape in transitioning democracies. Myanmar is currently transitioning from over five decades of military rule to a civilian-led, democratically-elected government. Consequently, public space has opened up, allowing Myanmar citizens to express their opinions and needs vis-à-vis policies in multiple sectors and to engage with policymakers. The majority of these advocacy efforts has been spearheaded by civil society actors, who have been supporting citizens in expressing themselves and facilitating opportunities for direct engagement. This paper is a case study …
Fish Assemblages Of The Withlacoochee River Basin In South Georgia, Usa, Matthew J. Cannister, David L. Bechler
Fish Assemblages Of The Withlacoochee River Basin In South Georgia, Usa, Matthew J. Cannister, David L. Bechler
Georgia Journal of Science
An ichthyofauna review of literature prior to 2008 on the Withlacoochee River basin in south-central Georgia, USA, indicated that the fish fauna was underrepresented compared to other rivers, such as the Suwannee River basin in Florida of which the Withlacoochee River is a tributary. A survey would provide the state of Georgia potentially valuable additional information on the fish fauna within the basin. A 45-site survey within the eastern portion of the Withlacoochee River basin was conducted from 2008 to 2010 employing seines, gill nets, fish traps, trotlines, and creel surveys. Surveys yielded 51 fish species of which three, the …

Universal And Automatic End-To-End Testing Of Smart Tvs, Ping Zhou, Amit Agarwal, Achal Pandey, Eric Yin
Universal And Automatic End-To-End Testing Of Smart Tvs, Ping Zhou, Amit Agarwal, Achal Pandey, Eric Yin
Defensive Publications Series
End-to-end testing of smart TVs has proven to be challenging due to various reasons, such as: the proprietary nature of hardware and software from different TV manufacturers; the difficulty of identifying performance bottlenecks due to visual rendering being performed by cloud-based renderers; etc. As a result, end-to-end testing of a smart TV still relies heavily on time-consuming and costly manual testing. This disclosure describes a framework for end-to-end testing of smart TVs that is automatic, e.g., uses minimal human intervention, and universal (agnostic to TV manufacturer).
Recognition Of Spelled Out Words In Spoken Queries, Felix Weissenberger, Victor Cărbune, Bogdan Prisacari
Recognition Of Spelled Out Words In Spoken Queries, Felix Weissenberger, Victor Cărbune, Bogdan Prisacari
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes techniques to enhance automated speech recognition by enabling automatic recognition of words spelled out by users. Machine learning techniques are utilized to detect explicit user intent to spell out a word as well as detect spelled out words without an explicitly stated user intent. If it is determined that the user is spelling a word, a spelling mode is triggered wherein received letters are concatenated together to form a word. If the user permits, data that includes the user context, audio of the word, audio of the user spelling out the word, and the textual representation of …

Wireless Charging Dock With Low Frequency Speaker, Luigi Zevola
Defensive Publications Series
High quality audio playback requires faithful reproduction of low, middle, and high frequency portions of audio. Low frequency sound playback on small devices such as mobile phones is difficult because of the relatively small size of the transducers used and other constraints. This disclosure describes a charging stand with a built-in speaker that receives and plays low frequency portion of audio from a phone coupled to the stand. The speakers in the phone are utilized for playback of other portions of the audio. Low frequency audio content is obtained using a low pass filter on the phone and is sent …

Performance Assessment Of Blackboard® Technology Among Freshman Undergraduate Students At Purdue University, Rod Van Pelt, Tyler Lim
Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference
At Purdue, almost every student uses electronic devices to access content and perform academic activities through the Blackboard platform. This study was aimed at understanding undergraduate freshmen’ feedback on existing classroom technologies and how this information can inform improvement of platforms’ design and effectiveness. Fourteen students completed a 12-question online survey. Blackboard technology was well accepted (92%) and rated user-friendly (62%). However, approximately 30% of students reported concerns over the convenience of use (23%) or reliability of the program (8%). This study confirmed that use of technology for academic learning and tasks performance is well accepted and didn’t identify major …
Explicitation Vs. Implicitation: Discourse Markersin English-Into-Arabic Translation, Mohammed Farghal, Abdullah Samateh
Explicitation Vs. Implicitation: Discourse Markersin English-Into-Arabic Translation, Mohammed Farghal, Abdullah Samateh
Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات
The present paper aims to examine Blum-Kulka’s (1986) claim that cases of explicitation in the target text (TT) correspond to cases of implicitation in the source text (ST). A corpus of three discourse markers (DMs) in an Arabic translation is examined against the DMs in the English ST. The findings show that there are three types of correspondence in DMs: explicitation to explicitation, explicitation to implicitation, and explicitation to zero equivalents. The paper concludes that the syndetic nature of Arabic discourse, unlike the asyndetic nature of its English counterpart, accounts for the presence of several cases of DMs which do …
The Diverse Roles Of Mitochondrial Dynamics In Retinal Ganglion Cell Maturation, Disease, And Regeneration, Alexander Kreymerman
The Diverse Roles Of Mitochondrial Dynamics In Retinal Ganglion Cell Maturation, Disease, And Regeneration, Alexander Kreymerman
Open Access Dissertations
Mitochondria maintain a diversity of roles central to the array of neuronal functions and survival, as implied by the ubiquitous evidence of mitochondrial roles in neuronal developmental, aging, and disease progression. The canonical function of mitochondria is to produce ATP, a critical and dominant molecule used by cells for energy requiring activities. However, since their discovery more than a century ago, mitochondria have been implicated in a vast collection of cellular processes, largely driven by their expanded function beyond metabolism, including secondary messenger signaling, cytoplasmic Ca2+ signaling, fatty acid oxidation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and protein scaffolding. More recently, …

A Nurse Practitioner-Led Group Advance Care Planning Program In An Independent And Assisted Living Community, Alexander Bustos
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
It has been well documented that the majority of people want to spend their last days in the comfort of their own homes, free of pain, and off any dependent machine. , However, the majority of people have not documented these wishes or talked with their family or provider about end of life care (Hamel, Wu, & Brodie, 2017). The Patient Self Determination Act (PSDA), which took effect on December 1, 1991, was enacted to raise awareness and promote discussions between patients and providers about end of life (EOL) healthcare decisions. The primary care nurse practitioner is in a prime …
Is Innovative Auditory Technology Here To Stay, Krish Galani
Is Innovative Auditory Technology Here To Stay, Krish Galani
Student Work
Innovation is often seen as a necessary constant throughout history, as it is our survival mechanism, evolving from humanity’s inherent ignorance/flaws. However, as society pushes for innovation at an ever-increasing rate, should we be concerned about its implications on the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) in the United States? The DHH has been quite sensitive to this surplus of innovation, with an increasing amount of ‘auditory aid related’ technologies being marketed every day. What does this mean for deaf culture? More importantly, how will these innovations shape the future of deaf behavior and linguistics?

Expression Of Lysine-Mediated Neuropeptide Hormones Controlling Satiety And Appetite In Broiler Chickens, Collins N. Khwatenge, Boniface M. Kimathi, Thyneice Taylor-Bowden, Samuel N. Nahashon
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Lysine is the second most limiting amino acid after methionine and is considered the most limiting amino acid for growth in poultry. Lysine requirement for broiler chickens has changed over the years. Leptin and adiponectin represent 2 adipokines that mediate metabolism by eliciting satiety effects whereas ghrelin peptide hormone influences appetite. We hypothesize that this affects growth performance of chicks. This study evaluates the effect of varying dietary lysine homeostasis on performance of broiler chickens through satiety- and appetite-mediating hormones. In 3 replications, 270 one-day-old chicks were reared for 8 wk feeding on diets comprising 0.85, 1.14, and 1.42% lysine …

Terrence Mcnally’S Universalizing Model: The Role Of Disability In Andre’S Mother; Lips Together, Teeth Apart; And Love! Valour! Compassion!, Alexa Burnstine
English (MA) Theses
In his works such as Andre’s Mother; Lips Together, Teeth Apart; and Love! Valour! Compassion!, playwright Terrence McNally utilizes categorically gay themes such as homophobia and living with HIV and AIDS in a time when little was understood about the illnesses. For these reasons, McNally critics customarily analyze McNally’s plays with a queer theory lens. This work examines those same topics and others, but with a critical disability lens. Inspired by Robert McRuer’s analytical partnership of queer, AIDS, and disabilities studies, this work assesses McNally’s use of various types of languages and finds the figures who are …
