Phylogenetic Relationship Among Slender Loris Species (Primates, Lorisidae: Loris) In Sri Lanka Based On Mtdna Co1 Barcoding, Saman Gamage, Faiz Marikar, Colin Groves, Craig Turner, Kalinga Padmalal, Sarath Kotagame
Turkish Journal of Zoology
There are 2 species of slender lorises found in Sri Lanka: the red slender loris, Loris tardigradus (Linnaeus, 1758), endemic to the wet zone and montane areas, and the grey slender loris, Loris lydekkerianus (Cabrera, 1908), which is widespread. In addition, currently there are 2 subspecies recognized for each of these 2 slender loris species of Sri Lanka. Yet their taxonomy, evolutionary history, and biogeography are still poorly understood, and there are some preliminary data suggesting the presence of other subspecies. In this study, we have analysed the partial mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene sequence of 21 Loris specimens collected …
Animal Remains Of Alaybeyi Höyük, Abu Bakar Siddiq
Animal Remains Of Alaybeyi Höyük, Abu Bakar Siddiq
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This paper presents the zooarchaeological observations on animal remains of Alaybeyi Höyük unearthed from 2016 and 2017 excavation sessions. Dated to 4721-4553 cal. BC, Alaybeyi stands so far as the oldest archaeological settlement discovered in northeast Anatolia. Therefore, the faunal assemblage at Alaybeyi offers great opportunity to study the status of animals and their relationships with humans in the largely unexplored Kars-Erzurum plateau covering a period from the Chalcolithic to Late Iron Age. Taxonomic and osteometric analyses show that, like the present day, cattle were dominant over caprines, revealing extensive cattle pastoralism in the region for at least about 7 …

Morphometric Analysis Of The Skulls Of Domestic Cattle (Bos Taurus L.) And Water Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis L.) In Turkey, Ermi̇ş Özkan, Abu Bakar Siddiq, Ki̇fayet Oya Kahveci̇oğlu, Muhsi̇n Öztürk, Vedat Onar
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A total of 20 domestic cattle (Bos taurus L.) and 15 water buffalo (Bubalis bubalis L.) skulls were analyzed in this study. All of the specimens belonged to female individuals. Using a total of 27 craniometric measurements from each of the skulls, 9 indices were calculated. Although there were statistically significant differences between the linear measurements of the skulls of both species, while calculating the indices with their ratios, the values of the measurements of the facial area were determinative in the craniology. Among these indices, the facial index 1 value was statistically significant (P < 0.01) in the comparison of these two species. On the other hand, while considering the orbit and foramen magnum measurements, in contrast with the transversal measurement, the height was more determinant for their index and form.

Technologies Of Suspicion And The Ethics Of Obligation In Political Asylum, Bridget M. Haas, Amy Shuman
Technologies Of Suspicion And The Ethics Of Obligation In Political Asylum, Bridget M. Haas, Amy Shuman
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Across the globe, migration has been met with intensifying modes of criminalization and securitization, and claims for political asylum are increasingly met with suspicion. Asylum seekers have become the focus of global debates surrounding humanitarian obligations, on the one hand, and concerns surrounding national security and border control, on the other. In Technologies of Suspicion and the Ethics of Obligation in Political Asylum, contributors provide fine-tuned analyses of political asylum systems and the adjudication of asylum claims across a range of sociocultural and geopolitical contexts.
The contributors to this timely volume, drawing on a variety of theoretical perspectives, offer critical …

Native And Indigenous Women Of Hawai'i: Exploring The Importance Of Indigenous Narratives And Storytelling To Understand Ancestral Knowledge Systems, Renuka Mahari De Silva
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation contains three articles. The research for these articles was conducted through many interviews and working directly in the communities from around the Island of O ‘ahu, Hawai‘i. Each article addresses a research topic that is connected to ancestral stories and historical events brought forward by women through stories and storytelling. These stories embed rich ancestral knowledge from a specific time and a specific place and space. In reading these articles, the reader is exposed to the power of story and storytelling, and how that in turn, reconnects people to places to learn from ancestral knowledge, and apply these …

Learning From The Landscape: Industrial Processes And Placer Mining Landscapes In The Elk Creek Mining District, Western Montana, Brent Stephen Rowley
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In 1865 gold was discovered in the Garnet Mountains of Western Montana. This was one of the last of a series of gold rushes in the American West that began with the California Gold Rush in 1849. During this time period miners carried knowledge of geology of placer deposits and placer mining techniques out of California and into the interior west where they encountered quite different geologic conditions. This study examines how miners perceived and learned from these new environments during the construction of placer landscapes in the Garnet Mountains, especially in the Elk Creek Mining District, through a process …
Constructing Distance, Responsibility, And Memory Management Theories: An Anthropological Approach To Death Notification Interactions, Teresa Ann 'Lilly' White
Constructing Distance, Responsibility, And Memory Management Theories: An Anthropological Approach To Death Notification Interactions, Teresa Ann 'Lilly' White
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Following a sudden or unexpected death, coroners often communicate the death to the next-of-kin. Death notifications may occur in hospitals, assisted living or dying facilities, homes, offices or workplaces, correctional facilities, schools, or other locations. A death notification has been perceived by outsiders and many researchers as a one-time, unilateral death-telling event. I argue, instead, death notifications are a series of social interactions and processes necessitating multiple actors and mechanisms. The death notification processes begin for the coroner when they are dispatched to a death scene, while the processes begin for the next-of-kin upon the death-telling event. The end is …
Peace And Subjectivity, Louis E. Wolcher
Peace And Subjectivity, Louis E. Wolcher
Articles
So long as there is law there can be no universal human right to peace. This is because legalized violence, whether in threat or in deed, constitutes the very antithesis of peaceful relations from the point of view of those whom law represses. Law cannot define peace as the absence of all violence—and still less as the absence of all legalized suffering—without gainsaying justice, for as Pascal says, “Justice without might is helpless; might without justice is tyrannical.” Although legal outcomes, like falling boulders and pouncing lions, can always be imputed to historical causes, experience teaches that legal actors generally …

Platy-1 elements are Platyrrhine-specific, short interspersed elements (SINEs) originally discovered in the Callithrix jacchus (common marmoset) genome. To date, only the marmoset genome has been analyzed for Platy-1 repeat content. Here, we report full-length Platy-1 insertions in other New World monkey (NWM) genomes (Saimiri boliviensis, squirrel monkey; Cebus imitator, capuchin monkey; and Aotus nancymaae, owl monkey) and analyze the amplification dynamics of lineage-specific Platy-1 insertions. A relatively small number of full-length and lineage-specific Platy-1 elements were found in the squirrel, capuchin, and owl monkey genomes compared to the marmoset genome. In addition, only a few older …

What Should Law School Rankings Measure And How Should We Measure It: A Comment On Heald & Sichelman's Rankings, Adam Chilton, Jonathan S. Masur
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
There are obvious benefits to ranking academic departments based on objective measures of faculty research output. However, there are considerable difficulties associated with producing reliable and accurate rankings. In this short comment, we offer an evaluation of Heald and Sichelman's recent foray into the project of ranking law schools. Heald and Sichelman are to be commended for the transparency and rigor of their rankings effort. At the same time, it is important to note that their rankings involve a series of contestable discretionary choices and could give rise to potential counterproductive gaming by law schools seeking to improve their place …
Octopus Minds Must Lead To Octopus Ethics, Barbara J. King, Lori Marino
Octopus Minds Must Lead To Octopus Ethics, Barbara J. King, Lori Marino
Animal Sentience
Mather argues convincingly for the existence of minds in octopuses based largely on laboratory experiments. Many of these experiments are highly invasive and involve mutilation and death. Moreover, octopuses are now being hailed as a “new model” for biological research and are being enthusiastically bred in captivity, both for research and for food. We argue that the compelling evidence for mind in octopuses must be accompanied by intense scrutiny of the ethics that shape how we treat them and that the intrinsic value of their individual lives must be recognized.

The Fayoum, The Seila Pyramid, Fag El-Gamous And Its Nearby Cities: A Background, Kerry Muhlestein, Cannon Fairbairn, Ronald Harris
Faculty Publications
Because the excavations discussed in this volume take place in the Fayoum, and cover a time period that spans from the Old Kingdom through the Byzantine era, many readers will find it helpful to understand the history, geography, and geology of the Fayoum. Here we provide a brief outline of those subjects. This is not intended to present new information or be a definitive discussion. Rather, it is aimed at contextualizing the rest of the material presented in this volume, and thus making all of its information more accessible. The Fag el-Gamous cemetery and the Seila Pyramid are located on …

Migrasi Orang Biak Dan Identitas Orang Asli Papua Di Sausapor, Papua Barat, Irin Oktafiani, Herry Jogaswara
Antropologi Indonesia
This paper discusses the migration process and the recognition of identity of Biak people in Sausapor along with the impact of it. Dichotomy of local and outsider is still a clear barrier separating Biak and Abun people in Miossu islands and Sausapor, the capital district of Tambrauw, West Papua. Biak people are considered as outsider with regards to the land ownership issue in Sausapor. On the other side, they are also considered as insider in Kampung Werur which is located in the same region with Sausapor. There are two different identity layers related to the problem of land ownership and …

Suku Bangsa Enggano Dalam Perdebatan Rumpun Bangsa Dan Bahasa Austronesia: Suatu Tinjauan Antropologis, Iman Fachruliansyah
Antropologi Indonesia
Enggano Island is located at the southernmost of the Barrier Islands, after Simeulue, Nias and Mentawai, off Sumatra’s west coast. Rising up from the deep seabed of the Indian Ocean, Enggano is often described as an isolated island. Literature on the inhabitants, known as the Engganese, are scarce or else limited to travel account and stories about their traditional culture that are no longer practiced. Studies on Enggano, especially in anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics, attempted to group Engganese language and culture with Nias and Mentawai given the close geographical location and degree of similarities. The Engganese position within the Austronesian …

Imaji Identitas Nasional Di Ruang Diaspora Anggota Ppi Di Thailand, M. Rifaldi Akbar
Antropologi Indonesia
National identity is a construct that grows in the memories of the nation’s members. In a diaspora space, Indonesian national identity has a more significant role than local identities. This article explores the articulations of national identity by the members of the Indonesian students abroad (PPI) in Thailand. As foreign students, they encounter with people from other nations who have limited knowledge about polyethnic Indonesia in daily basis. Thus, they are trapped in a space that requires them to define Indonesia. Therefore, the representation of national identity becomes the autonomy of each PPI member. This article argues that the similarity …

Violent conflicts that have been occurring in the Land of Papua since 1965 indicate no signs of coming to an end, even compounded by repression, discrimination, and marginalization of indigenous Papuans. This article aims to trace a number of studies of the Papuan conflict and its consequences to encourage the peace process. In addition, it aims to identify the gap between knowledge about the Papua conflict produced by researchers and the government policy to resolve the conflict. This research uses literature study. These studies were selected due to their focus on the asymmetrical power relations between the state and the …

Telaah Kritis Terhadap Pendekatan Ekoteologi Dalam Upaya Pelestarian Hewan Liar Di Minahasa, Glenn Allen Tielung, Tony Rudyansjah
Antropologi Indonesia
The environmental theology approach, known as ecotheology, attempts to make people aware of their actions towards the natural environment through a theological framework. Its basic assumption departs from the idea that the dogma of hierarchical construction of the universe is the dominant factor in influencing ethical relation between humans and the natural world surrounding them. Within the framework of the dogma, humans are given a special mandate to maintain other creations. This article argues that ecotheology’s approach in conserving wild animals in Minahasa is still trapped in the ontological model of dualism. It is characterized by humans’ special status compared …

Collectives as a non-formal cultural institution began to emerge and widespread at around the 1998 Reformation. As a new form of cultural movement in Yogyakarta, collectives were different to formal cultural institutions, such as museums and art galleries, which mostly depend on financial support from the government, corporation, or some individual patrons. This article discusses the contemporary cultural organization domain with the case of collectives based in Yogyakarta. Some groups with characteristics of collectives were initiated in the urban sphere and run by young people. We comprehend this activism of collectives as a ‘cultural acts’ (laku budaya)—they ran various cultural …

Women Creatives And Machismo In Mexican Advertising: Challenging Barriers To Success, Marta Mensa Torra, Jean M. Grow
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
This study explores the experiences of women working as creatives in Mexican advertising creative departments. It is based on 22 in-depth interviews and suggests that these women face significant challenges within the machismo culture, which permeates Mexican advertising creative departments. Mexico plays an important role in global advertising, particularly in Latin America, but in this country female workers only represent five per cent of those working in creative departments. This is the first study focused on Mexican women creatives in advertising, highlighting the confluence of advertising women creatives and Mexican culture. Analysis reveals ten subcategories which articulate the horizontal and …

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
While the environment has long played a role in humanistic expressions and investigations, the need for a more integrated look at the human-environment relationship has become ever more pressing. More than ever, humanities scholars are recognizing their ability to mobilize critical and creative action to address pressing socioeconomic, sociopolitical, and socioenvironmental problems. Teaching and engaging students through interdisciplinary methods, connecting students and communities, developing a sense of agency and responsibility for planetary sustainability has become a visible focus in higher education. My study aimed to understand how an environmental humanities class affects, if at all, the way students construct worldview. …
