Linguistic Rights In The Classroom: The Education Of Language Minorities In The United States, Julia Frichter Jan 2019

Linguistic Rights In The Classroom: The Education Of Language Minorities In The United States, Julia Frichter

Theses & ETDs

English dominance has been the overwhelming trend of US history. Native languages have long been eradicated alongside their speakers. Boarding schools were established to Americanize indigenous peoples both culturally and linguistically (Warhol 2011). Naturalization laws mandated English proficiency for migrants, minimizing the number and size of language enclaves across the country, enclaves which used to define the colonies. States individually established English only clauses and banned foreign language education in schools (Malakoff and Hakuta 1990), and though the civil rights era presented hope for language rights, a subsequent wave of English-only sentiment swept the country again in the 1980s. Now, …

Breaking The Bee’S Knees: An Overview Of Global Pollinator Decline And Conservation Efforts On The New College Of Florida Campus, Jackie Lebouitz Jan 2019

Breaking The Bee’S Knees: An Overview Of Global Pollinator Decline And Conservation Efforts On The New College Of Florida Campus, Jackie Lebouitz

Theses & ETDs

We live in a world where anthropogenic activity and its consequences (pollution, habitat destruction, climate change, etc.) have led to the loss of pollinator biodiversity. Both agricultural operations and general ecosystems require pollination for stability. Biodiversity provides an excellent ecological buffer for compromised species that may disappear due to environmental stressors, disease, and genetic bottlenecks. In fact, bats, birds, butterflies, beetles, and even some species of lizards can provide pollination services to plants. Some flowering plants rely on specialist pollinators for their continued persistence in an ecological community, and the vulnerability of these species can lead to disruptions in the …

Fill The Earth And Subdue It: Evangelicals, Environmentalism, And Religious Divides, James Spencer Powell Jan 2019

Fill The Earth And Subdue It: Evangelicals, Environmentalism, And Religious Divides, James Spencer Powell

Theses & ETDs

Christianity contains numerous ecotheologies that present humans as the epitome of creation, but also instruct them to care for the Earth. While Christian environmental organizations have flourished over the past few decades, studies have consistently linked belief in Christianity and Evangelicalism in particular to negative environmental ethics and lack of support for environmental regulation. Numerous explanations for Evangelical’s aversion to environmentalism have been explored and tested such as biblical literalism, religiosity, morality, eschatology, and political conservatism with different explanations ultimately resulting. This led me to explore what aspects of Christianity are responsible for these environmental ethics by studying the social …

Stars, Dinosaurs, And You: A Prehistoric Podcast, Eliza Bychek

Theses & ETDs

This audio podcast surveys the breadth of natural history, starting with the Big Bang and progressing through the formation of stars and planets to our own Earth, from there on serving as an overview of the history of life through its various eras, and culminating in a look at the hominin family tree and the evolution of humankind. The podcast is intended to be accessible to listeners of all levels, requiring only an understanding of English and a willingness to learn. It should leave its audience with a solid scientific foundation for understanding how we and our world evolved to …

Performing The Possibility Of Difference: Analyzing Race, Movement, And Performance In The Work Of Pearl Primus And Ira Aldridge, Eugenia Hayley Titterington Jan 2019

Performing The Possibility Of Difference: Analyzing Race, Movement, And Performance In The Work Of Pearl Primus And Ira Aldridge, Eugenia Hayley Titterington

Theses & ETDs

The medium of performance is a valuable means for engaging racial dialogue since its liveness draws attention to the performing body, allowing us to negotiate what social meanings culture has invested in bodies. However, attention to topics of race and racism in Western theatre has historically avoided confronting intersubjective dialogues about race in favor of objectifying otherized racial identities, most notably performances of blackness, to reaffirm White racial dominance. Black artists have historically worked to resist this by reframing the performance as a site of opposition. This study uses this point of tension to study the ways physicality in dance …

The History, Current State, And Potential Future Of Archaeological Illustration, Madison Brown Jan 2019

The History, Current State, And Potential Future Of Archaeological Illustration, Madison Brown

Theses & ETDs

Archaeological illustration, in the broadest term, is the depiction of human material culture through a visual medium. As technique advanced over time, so too did the understanding of how to best portray images in an archaeological context. The goal of this paper is to present an abridged history of the important innovations that lead up to the formation of this discipline, as well as discuss the conventions of modern practice. The term “convention” is important as the field of archaeological illustration has never truly standardized, so there is a great deal of variation that will not be fully touched upon. …

A Discussion Of The Native American Graves Protection And Repatriation Act, Olivia Sage Grunwald Jan 2019

A Discussion Of The Native American Graves Protection And Repatriation Act, Olivia Sage Grunwald

Theses & ETDs

Despite the importance of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), in my review of the literature, I found the literature regarding NAGPRA to be rather sparse, and the website that covers what has been achieved by NAGPRA has not been updated in a few years. In addition, it is not given much priority in institutions and administrations, especially because there are few repercussions if it is not obeyed. This is an unfortunate mistake, as misconceptions regarding the law and miscommunications between those who must abide by it run rampant, only serving to contribute to the perceived divide …

Enemy At The Gates: The Rise And Fall Of The Chanka Confederation, Cesar Augusto Chavez Lecca Jan 2019

Enemy At The Gates: The Rise And Fall Of The Chanka Confederation, Cesar Augusto Chavez Lecca

Theses & ETDs

The Late Intermediate Period of Peruvian history [ca 1000-1400 C.E.] saw the rise of prominent kingdoms that quickly expanded beyond their borders in the span of a century or so. Most archaeological research has been focused on the Inca Empire and the Kingdom of Chimú. The focus on these two cultures, however, has eclipsed the complexity of Andean geo-politics during the Late Intermediate Period as different groups of people fought for supremacy, control of vital trade networks, resources, and to honor their ancestors. This research paper will explore the Chanka culture [1000 to 1450 C.E.]. This was one of the …

Critiquing Environmental Rhetoric: An Exploration Of Ecocriticism And Its Value To Activism, Tristen Johns Jan 2019

Critiquing Environmental Rhetoric: An Exploration Of Ecocriticism And Its Value To Activism, Tristen Johns

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the field of ecocriticism, tracing its conceptualization as a subgenre of literary critique and discussing its implications for the community of scholars and environmental activists. I explore commonly cited definitions of the field and examine ecocritics’ works. I also discuss the importance of the ecocritical approach and its value to the field of environmental study and activism. I advocate for the importance of the humanities to work in environmental studies, a perspective often missing in my experience from research related to the ecological crisis. Ecocritics do far more than contribute critiques of specific pieces of literature, but …

Chopped By A Double-Edged Sword: An Ethnographic Study Of Florida’S Ballroom Scene, Haiwen Yu Jan 2019

Chopped By A Double-Edged Sword: An Ethnographic Study Of Florida’S Ballroom Scene, Haiwen Yu

Theses & ETDs

In a time of increasing visibility and representation of LGBTQ+ issues, the ballroom community is finding itself thrust into the spotlight. In this thesis I examine these recent changes and their effects on this underground subculture. An account of my own learning process and journey into this community is supplemented with an oral history of the founding of a ballroom scene in the state of Florida. Through in-depth interviews and participant observation, I explore themes of cultural change, exchange, and appropriation as well as authority, performativity, authenticity and sincerity within ballroom. I look at ballroom culture itself, the dynamic of …

The Yucatec Maya Milpa: Integrating Livelihood, Environment, And Culture, Allegra Nolan Jan 2019

The Yucatec Maya Milpa: Integrating Livelihood, Environment, And Culture, Allegra Nolan

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the milpa agricultural system utilized by the indigenous Maya of the Yucatán Peninsula. Informed by both personal fieldwork and anthropological texts, the first two chapters describe the technical and cultural practices within the system. Through this description, I demonstrate the multi-faceted character of the milpa, a framework for food production, environmental management, and cultural expression. This traditional system is not confined to a period of history, but rather continuously adapts to changes in environmental conditions, human needs, and market influences. However, the productive capacity of the milpa field has declined under the pressures of increasingly intense change, …

Queer As Florida: Sexuality And Gender Diversity In The Sunshine State, Hal Trejo Jan 2019

Queer As Florida: Sexuality And Gender Diversity In The Sunshine State, Hal Trejo

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the connections between identity and materiality, and seeks to understand how this research might best be disseminated using museum design. Chapter one discusses the importance of vulnerable researchers, and the life-saving potential of research that centers gender and sexuality. The second chapter introduces the concept of Flintstonification, and wrestles with the issue of contemporary frameworks being overlaid on the past. The third chapter provides transcribed portions of oral history interviews, as well as discussions surrounding identity and belongings. The fourth chapter discusses the construction of the exhibit portion of this thesis, with a brief exploration of methodology …

The Effects Of Altitude On Asthma And Investigation Of Traditional Andean Treatments, Ian Imants Pumpurs Jan 2019

The Effects Of Altitude On Asthma And Investigation Of Traditional Andean Treatments, Ian Imants Pumpurs

Theses & ETDs

Due to asthma’s high prevalence worldwide, it is important to understand how environmental factors such as elevation affect the expression of the disease in order to ultimately improve the quality of life of sufferers. This study reviews the biological basis of the disease and examines the impact that low and high altitude have on the expression and severity of asthmatic symptoms. This review was conducted by examining published articles assessing asthma in specific communities located at various elevations. There were notable differences in the severity of asthmatic symptoms among children and adult populations in these communities. It was determined that …

Pre-Existing Conditions: Christianity, Identity, Gender, And Bodily Autonomy, Alice Corinne Leavengood Jan 2019

Pre-Existing Conditions: Christianity, Identity, Gender, And Bodily Autonomy, Alice Corinne Leavengood

Theses & ETDs

This art project is a culmination of research in Medieval and Gothic Christian culture, coupled with contemporary politics and social commentary on gender, identity, sexual freedom, and reproductive rights. Through an examination of the culture wars and development of the Religious Right and rise of anti-abortion propaganda, my thesis explores political iconography as a way to reaffirm personal freedom relating to gender, identity, and reproductive rights. Stained glass windows are simulated through screen printing on Plexiglass, a new technique of my own creation. Depicting narratives concerning the oppression of queer and female-bodied people and the need for the feminist and …

Glass And Lapidary Beads At Jamestown, Virginia: An Updated Assessment, Emma Derry Jan 2019

Glass And Lapidary Beads At Jamestown, Virginia: An Updated Assessment, Emma Derry

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

An updated assessment of the trade beads in the Jamestown collection has long been overdue since Heather Lapham’s 1998 study. The size and variation of the collection has expanded to include nearly 4,000 glass beads representing over 100 Kidd and Kidd varieties, as well as nearly 100 lapidary beads made of amber, coral, jet, amethyst, carnelian, chalcedony, agate, and quartz. The Jamestown assemblage strongly resembles those found at 16th-century Spanish colonial sites, due to the presence of navy blue Nueva Cadiz beads manufactured in Venice and faceted quartz-crystal beads likely produced in Spain. Other beads in the collection, however, may …

Roman To Islamic Beads And Pendants From Matmar And Mostagedda, Middle Egypt, Joanna Then-Obłuska, Alexandra D. Pleşa Jan 2019

Roman To Islamic Beads And Pendants From Matmar And Mostagedda, Middle Egypt, Joanna Then-Obłuska, Alexandra D. Pleşa

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Between 1927 and 1931, British archaeologists Guy Brunton and his wife Winifred recorded over 150 graves assumed to date from Late Dynastic to early Islamic times in the cemeteries of Matmar and Mostagedda, Middle Egypt. Sixty-four bead objects found in funerary context are now located in six museum collections. Recent studies of material found in these tombs and the radiocarbon dating of textile samples allowed for a revision of Brunton’s initial chronology and an overview of the typology of the bead corpus based on the revised chronological framework. The analysis of the Matmar and Mostagedda corpus also opens the avenue …

Beaded Aprons Of The Coastal Peoples Of The Guianas, Michael Oehrl Jan 2019

Beaded Aprons Of The Coastal Peoples Of The Guianas, Michael Oehrl

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Although many beaded aprons from the coastal area of the Guianas are among the oldest preserved collected objects of the South American lowlands, there is still no general consensus as to who the manufacturers of these aprons were. The glass beads used differ from those typically employed at the end of the 19th century and can be dated between 1750 and 1850. In the literature and museums, these aprons are not frequently described in detail, and the author is not aware of any early object for which a collector has provided more detailed information. This article is intended to give …

An Evaluation Of The Refugee Experience Of Liminality And The Impact Of Best Practice Models Of Care, Hanna Erickson Jan 2019

An Evaluation Of The Refugee Experience Of Liminality And The Impact Of Best Practice Models Of Care, Hanna Erickson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Globalization presents massive challenges for healthcare providers and the blend of language, expectation and cost creates increased risk for all patients. Refugees are among the most vulnerable of populations when overall health outcomes are measured and access to healthcare is analyzed.1 This is due to rapid modernization of health care systems and the fact that refugees are typically leaving a volatile place of origin and migrating to a wealthier, more stable country where different modalities are used to access care. Women of childbearing age comprise a huge portion of refugees and will be the population of focus examined here.

A …

Barriers To Sexual And Reproductive Health Care Access In Central America With A Focus On Modern Contraception, Maria Mccoshen Jan 2019

Barriers To Sexual And Reproductive Health Care Access In Central America With A Focus On Modern Contraception, Maria Mccoshen

Theses and Graduate Projects

Reproductive health is an important indicator of overall population health and is a priority of international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The UN includes the right to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in their international covenant on rights stating, “...a woman’s reproductive option is considered a basic human right”. This paper will evaluate whether SRH, specifically modern contraceptive access, is met throughout areas of Central America, with a focus on the country of Costa Rica.

Teaching Data Reproducibility Through Service Learning, Anne Nurse, Trish Staiger Jan 2019

Teaching Data Reproducibility Through Service Learning, Anne Nurse, Trish Staiger

All Faculty Articles

Data reproducibility is becoming increasingly important in the social sciences, but it has yet to be incorporated into many undergraduate sociology programs. This note describes a service–learning activity that can be added to an introductory statistics course. Students partner with a nonprofit and analyze quantitative data to answer questions selected by the agency. Reproducibility is the central mechanism of communication between the nonprofit, the students, and the course instructor. An assessment of the project suggests that students achieve an understanding of how to create reproducible data. They also come to see its value as a method of communication about data …
