Communication During Perimmigration: A Life-Line Interview Method Study, Giada Roberta Rossi
Communication During Perimmigration: A Life-Line Interview Method Study, Giada Roberta Rossi
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
This thesis examines the communication challenges faced by migrants and their impact on acculturation using a new approach. The study analyzed autobiographical memories of immigrants’ communication to explore both positive and negative experiences over time. The study extends previous intercultural communication research by using the Life-Line Interview Method (LIM) (Assink & Schroots, 2010) to collect autobiographical narratives from twelve participants about their communication journeys. The findings reveal consistencies with past intercultural communication research insofar as uncertainty and identity problems were pervasive, but also positively extends past research arguing that supportive environments, characterized by culturally responsive educators and peer networks, play …

In its decision overruling the Chevron doctrine—which directed judges to accept an agency’s reasonable interpretation of ambiguous statutory language—the Supreme Court declares: “[A]gencies have no special competence in resolving statutory ambiguities. Courts do.” This Article shows why this statement exhibits a profoundly blinkered judicial hubris. Our interview-based empirical study, involving dozens of agency officials across the administrative state, shows agencies’ special, indeed unique, competence in working with statutes to make democratic enactments real.
Agencies, we show, act as a statute’s custodians, managing the statutory regime over a life cycle that exceeds any single governing coalition. Borrowing ideas from private law, …

Chief Justice Roberts of the United States Supreme Court has said that “the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”1 In this Article, I examine what it means to discriminate on the basis of race—or what it means to stop discriminating on the basis of race. I consider interventions designed to enhance social welfare in an economy with racially discriminatory games operating at its base. One set of interventions is color-blind, in the sense that it treats all actors alike regardless of race. The other set of interventions is …

Every so often, a prison strike will make national news, as it did in 2014, 2016, and 2018. 1 The media will focus on the atrocious conditions of confinement; the unchecked violence; the wages numerated in pennies; and the state’s indifference to the strikers’ modest demands for food, medical care, and human contact.
Orisanmi Burton’s2 book, Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism, Prison Repression, and the Long Attica Revolt, urges us to process such reporting with a healthy dose of skepticism. What if prison rebellions were telling us something else, something even more important? What if they were …

Bridging Human Expertise And Ai In Qualitative Research: Understanding Ownership, Trust And Bias In Ai-Assisted Coding, Anoushka Jagadeesh Puranik
Theses
Qualitative research is a multifaceted process involving data collection, transcription, organization, coding, and thematic analysis. As qualitative data analysis (QDA) tools gain popularity, artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated to automate aspects of this workflow. This study investigates researchers’ QDA practices, their experiences with existing tools, and their perspectives on AI involvement in qualitative research. We introduce ChromaScribe, a prototype QDA tool, and gather feedback to assess whether it addresses the limitations of current tools. Through interviews with 16 qualitative researchers, we examine their preferences for traditional coding, AI-initiated coding, and human-initiated coding, exploring factors such as ownership, trust and …

Objectives: There is limited knowledge on how providers and patients in the emergency department (ED) use electronic health records (EHRs) to facilitate the diagnostic process. While EHRs can support diagnostic decision-making, EHR features that are not user-centered may increase the likelihood of diagnostic error. We aimed to identify how EHRs facilitate or impede the diagnostic process in the ED and to identify opportunities to reduce diagnostic errors and improve care quality.
Materials and methods: We conducted semistructured interviews with 10 physicians, 15 nurses, and 8 patients across 4 EDs. Data were analyzed using a hybrid thematic analysis approach, which blends …

Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism
This study developed a reliable scale for measuring Social Capital in the context of tourism operations and examines its influences on Peoples' Involvement. The quantitative research method was employed, and the five stages of data purification processes were performed: identification of dimensions and indicators, item-to-total correlation, and explorative factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and the structural equation model. The study identifies four dimensional scales of social capital across 13 indicators: bonding social capital, social bridging capital, social linking capital, and social harmless capital, and confirms that social capital has a significant influence on peoples' involvement. As the first effort at …
A New Application Of The Coimbra Method For Cranial Entheseal Changes, Emily Carlo
A New Application Of The Coimbra Method For Cranial Entheseal Changes, Emily Carlo
Research in the Capitol
The study of entheseal changes (EC) has a lengthy history within biological anthropology, aiding in the reconstruction of habitual activities, lifestyles, and physiological stress experienced by past populations. However, most existing research has focused on postcranial entheses, leaving cranial entheses largely unexplored. This study aims to apply the Coimbra Method, a recent and standardized scoring system, to analyze cranial entheses and investigate the relationship between age, sex, and entheseal changes. By observing and scoring entheses associated with the insertions of five cranial muscles, this research will contribute to a deeper understanding of skeletal plasticity in response to mechanical stress. The …

Research in the Capitol
Museums and scientific institutions in the United States house human remains and important cultural objects in their collections; materials obtained in various manners over the past few centuries. In 1990, Congress passed the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, which mandated that federally funded institutions return Native remains and cultural objects to the affiliated tribe. Over the last three decades the rules have been modified a couple of times with the input of tribes and institutions. This has become an ongoing negotiation process as both public and professional conversations change. In recent conversations of repatriation, the topic has even …

The Life Of Terence, Revisited, Hannah Čulík-Baird
The Life Of Terence, Revisited, Hannah Čulík-Baird
New England Classical Journal
Suetonius’ biography of Publius Terentius Afer, i.e., Terence the African (c. 195-159 BCE), identifies the Roman comic poet as a former slave from Carthage, describing him physically as a slim man of medium height and “dark color” (colore fusco). Yet classicists have historically denied Terence’s blackness out of a belief that “humanistic” or linguistic excellence could not be reconciled with blackness and African identity. This article addresses the Eurocentric logic underpinning classical scholars’ treatment of Terence, ultimately affirming both the ancient and modern traditions which make legitimate claims on the black poet as an ancestral figure.

Digital Access, Digital Skills, And Academic Success: Rethinking Digital Capital In Higher Education, Nicholas Boon
Digital Access, Digital Skills, And Academic Success: Rethinking Digital Capital In Higher Education, Nicholas Boon
Honors Thesis
Recent scholarship has suggested that “digital capital” (DC), encompassing digital access and competency, may play a critical role in processes of social reproduction. However, there has been limited scholarship exploring this concept’s empirical utility. Especially within higher education, where increasing digitalization may exacerbate inequality by disadvantaging students with low DC. Using a survey of 239 students at two institutions of higher education in the Midwest, this study examines the usefulness of the DC concept for understanding unequal educational outcomes in the contemporary university context. This study is among the first to empirically investigate the relationship between sociodemographic factors, DC accumulation, …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Wetlands, as a crucial component of the Earth's ecosystem, play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and preserving biodiversity. However, wetlands are currently facing severe challenges, as both natural and human-induced factors are contributing to their global degradation. Gaining a deep understanding of the species composition and biodiversity within wetland-covered areas and accurately analyzing their changing trends not only helps assess the current and future state of wetlands but also provides strong support for the formulation of scientifically sound wetland conservation strategies. In recent years, the rapid development of geospatial intelligence and remote sensing technologies has brought new opportunities …
Radical Resistance In The Penumbra Of The Law: Legal Mobilization For Migrant Farmworkers Under Neo-Colonial Racial Capitalism, Vasanthi Venkatesh
Radical Resistance In The Penumbra Of The Law: Legal Mobilization For Migrant Farmworkers Under Neo-Colonial Racial Capitalism, Vasanthi Venkatesh
Journal of Law and Social Policy
Workers from the Global South with temporary immigration status provide a transitory, cheap, exploitable workforce that is responsive to economic vicissitudes and supremacist anti-migration discourse. They are created as an exceptional category of persons “essential” for their work but with no right to remain and claim citizenship-type entitlement to the Global North. The programs in agriculture are rooted in the legacies of indentureship, plantation, and other forms of racialized coerced labour. These programs continue to entrench a neocolonial racial capitalist global order where “unfree labour” is sanctified by contemporary liberal laws. Caught in the vice of a hegemonic, racial, state-governed …

Empowering The Future: The Role Of Women Landowner Networks In Succession Planning, Charlotte Brockman, Andrea Basche Dr., Brooke Mcwherter Dr.
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Women non-operating landowners play a critical yet often overlooked role in agricultural land management and decision-making. This study examines the intersection of emotional, economic, and social factors influencing their land tenure decisions, particularly in the context of succession planning and tenant relationships. Through qualitative analysis, findings reveal that women landowners navigate unique challenges, including limited access to tailored resources, legal and financial barriers, and gendered dynamics in agricultural advising. Participants expressed strong emotional attachments to their land, influencing their stewardship goals and interest in conservation practices. Additionally, the study highlights the need for increased support structures, such as legal guidance, …

This article takes a transdisciplinary approach to a relatively simple-sounding task – tree measuring. It asks the question, ‘How many ways are there to measure a tree?’, in order to provoke a discussion of our different ways of knowing. It attempts to engage a reader in thinking about disciplines and what they do. It does so by sharing insights from a project in which diverse scholars, practitioners and children came together for the common purpose of producing engaged knowledge. The experience of reading the article should prompt questions about whose knowledge counts and why, and the value of university research …

Hikikomori is a mental health condition characterized by social withdrawal, causing distress for both the affected individuals and those around them. While factors such as gender, anxiety, and depression have been linked to hikikomori, research on this condition in Indonesia remains limited. This study investigated the association between gender, depression, and anxiety with the risk of hikikomori in West Lombok, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Hospital X in West Lombok, Indonesia, involving 60 patients with depression attending the Mental Health Polyclinic. The respondent ages ranged from 20 to 79 years. Data on gender, depression, anxiety, and hikikomori were …

The Age Of Neoliberal Capitalism And The Eclipse Of Intergenerational Care: A Philosophical Reading At The Aftermath Of The Pandemic, Ferdinando G. Menga
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
Taking its cue from the experience of pandemic, which has had an enormous impact on society at a global level, this paper makes a two-faceted plea by way of a philosophical analysis. In the first place, it claims that care should entail not only a present-based reach, but also an intergenerational character. In the second place, the paper analyzes the deep genealogy of the current structural blindness towards a future-oriented understanding of care, a genealogy which is to be traced back to the very modern liberal-capitalist design of society, and, furthermore, is to be detected nowadays in its extreme form …

Rethinking Hope In Dystopian Times: A Critical Assessment, Gerard Delanty
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
I begin by discussing the salience of the idea of hope for the present day with some examples which illustrate its strong political and cultural resonance. However, the now very extensive literature on hope, mostly in moral and political philosophy, is somewhat diverse and unclear as regards how it should be understood in ways that make it meaningful for the present day. While some of the most important perspectives are in the political philosophy of hope, there is almost no discussion of its sociological significance. I offer a brief critical strand of the main themes in recent writing on hope …
