Tuki Walmikuna: Quechua Women, Domestic Labor, And Life Hopes In Peru, Elizabeth Sumida Huaman
Tuki Walmikuna: Quechua Women, Domestic Labor, And Life Hopes In Peru, Elizabeth Sumida Huaman
International Journal of Human Rights Education
This article discusses Quechua women, labor, and educational opportunity in Peru and explores the relationship between coloniality and violence, Quechua racialized labor and Spanish exploitation, and unequal access to formal schooling, which have impacted generations of Quechua women. Drawing from a larger narrative project with three generations of Quechua grandmothers, daughters, and granddaughters from the Andean highlands of Peru, the article revisits the Agrarian Reform Law era, foundational and gendered research gaining prominence through the 1970s, and offers insights regarding life hopes gained through newly emerging testimonies.

“It’S Always A Part Of You”: The Connection Between Sacred Spaces And Indigenous/Aboriginal Health, Danelle Cooper, Treena Delormier, Maile Taualii
International Journal of Human Rights Education
Since colonization, Indigenous/Aboriginal Peoples (IAP) have fought for their inherent rights to follow their ways of life on their traditional territories. One continuing battle is the protection of sacred spaces. Sacred spaces are places recognized by IAP as deeply spiritually and powerful. Relationships to sacred spaces sustain spiritual connections integral to our concepts of holistic health/well-being and are vital for cultural integrity. Though all of the natural world is sacred to IAP, the particular cultural and spiritual significance of sacred spaces and impact on health merits attention. Drawing from qualitative research, this article investigates IAP’s perspectives and experiences regarding the …

Gender In Bethel University’S Political Science Department: A Qualitative Study Of The Experiences Of Female Political Science Students, Sarah E. Bylsma
Gender In Bethel University’S Political Science Department: A Qualitative Study Of The Experiences Of Female Political Science Students, Sarah E. Bylsma
Library Research Prize Student Works
In one political science class I took recently, I noticed some interesting behaviors among myself and my classmates...This situation got me thinking about the role that gender plays in politics, and this course gave me the opportunity to closely examine how gender may be playing a role in the Political Science Department at Bethel. Currently, Bethel has no female political science professors, despite intentional efforts to look for female candidates during the most recent hiring process. Statistically speaking, the Political Science Department, which consists of three majors: Political Science, Business and Political Science, and International Relations, is comprised of 45% …

An Examination Of The Characteristics And Perceptions Of School Resource Officers In Rural And Urban Oklahoma Schools, Valerie H. Hunt, Melissa A. Taylor, Brett Fitzgerald, Eric D. Button, Brinck Kerr
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Fueled by concerns about school violence, the number of School Resource Officers (SROs) in the United States has soared. SROs are law enforcement officers who work in elementary and secondary schools and who are tasked to increase school safety. As of 2016, 48 percent of US public schools had SROs, compared to less than one percent in the 1970s, yet there are few studies that measure their effects. In particular, the literature largely ignores rural/urban differences. This study uses survey data from SROs working in public schools in Oklahoma to understand their roles and to determine if there are differences …

Navigating “Red Lines” And Transcending The Binary: Tensions In The Pedagogical And Political Goals Of Peace Education Work, Karen Ross
Peace and Conflict Studies
In this article I explore the tensions that arise in the context of educational initiatives implemented by organizations that have both pedagogical and political aspirations. I draw on the work of Sadaka Reut, a veteran Jewish-Palestinian peace education organization, to highlight how the ideological commitments held by an organization working for structural equality can limit possibilities for openness to multiple perspectives and can thus serve as a barrier towards successfully achieving pedagogical aspirations, in particular Sadaka Reut’s goal of educating towards a binational community of Jewish and Palestinian activists working in partnership. I also highlight the tension inherent in working …
Can Mystical Peace Contribute To Global Peace?, Peter Gan
Can Mystical Peace Contribute To Global Peace?, Peter Gan
Peace and Conflict Studies
Testimonial reports of mystics highlight an experience of peace in the midst of their mystical encounters, despite claiming that these encounters resist description. What I intend to do is to explore ways in which mystical peace, in combination with several principal features of the mystical life, is able to afford some special means in the initiation and building of peace in the world. These special or unique means rest on the distinctive traits of what mysticism harbors; traits such as infinity, all-encompassingness, ultimacy, and paradox.

Mayan Bloodshed: Examining What Allowed For Genocide To Occur In Early Colonial Yucatan, Tyler C. Rodriguez
Mayan Bloodshed: Examining What Allowed For Genocide To Occur In Early Colonial Yucatan, Tyler C. Rodriguez
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
By the mid-sixteenth century, Yucatan was firmly under Catholic control. By 1561, there were dozens of friars and eight monasteries in operation, and programs aimed at converting Mayan natives to Catholicism appeared to be going smoothly. However, in 1562 friars at Mani were confronted with clear evidence that the “Christian Indians” were still worshiping their previous gods in secret. The Indians accused of idolatry were rounded up and subject to a severe form of torture known as the garrucha, a form of torture including flogging and the burning of flesh using wax.

Leadership Influence In The Adoption Of Innovation By Critical Care Nurses, Michael Mceachern
Leadership Influence In The Adoption Of Innovation By Critical Care Nurses, Michael Mceachern
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Innovation is critical to the survival and continued success of hospitals. Public and political criticism coalesces around costs, quality, and access. This qualitative research study was conducted to discover strategies that may be useful to nurse managers in supporting innovation adoption. The research design of this case study is useful in understanding how managers and nurses experience innovation in critical care settings. Data collection was carried out on the campus of a university-affiliated research hospital located in the southeastern U.S. A semistructured, protocol-driven, interview process, was used to collect data from 12 participants including nurse leaders and staff nurses. Emphasis …

The Governance Of Human (Germline) Genome Modification At The International And Transnational Levels, Cesare P. R. Romano, Andrea Boggio, Jessica Almqvist
History and Social Sciences Faculty Book Publications
In this chapter, we review the key elements of the larger international and transnational framework within which the national legal regimes regulating human germline genome modification exist. Part I is a quick primer to international law and international human rights for the benefit of those who are not familiar with them. Part II presents the relevant norms of international bioethics law, including three main declarations adopted by UNESCO touching on human genome modification. It discusses also the relevant governance activities of the World Health Organization, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and civil society, nationally and transnationally. Part III discusses …

In its first 2 years of operation, the ground-based Terrestrial gamma ray flash and Energetic Thunderstorm Rooftop Array (TETRA)-II array of gamma ray detectors has recorded 22 bursts of gamma rays of millisecond-scale duration associated with lightning. In this study, we present the TETRA-II observations detected at the three TETRA-II ground-level sites in Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and Panama together with the simultaneous radio frequency signals from the lightning data sets VAISALA Global Lightning Dataset, VAISALA National Lightning Detection Network, Earth Networks Total Lightning Network, and World Wide Lightning Location Network. The relative timing between the gamma ray events and the …

A Transcendental Phenomenology Of General Education Teachers' Experiences Instructing Twice-Exceptional High School Students, Jill Denise Collet
A Transcendental Phenomenology Of General Education Teachers' Experiences Instructing Twice-Exceptional High School Students, Jill Denise Collet
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This transcendental phenomenological study examined the experiences of 10 teachers of twice exceptional students at two high schools in northeast Ohio. The central research question was: What are the shared experiences of general education high school teachers instructing twice-exceptional students in northeast Ohio? Sub-questions explored how participants described their experiences in meeting the educational needs of twice-exceptional learners, how teachers described their self-efficacy in regard to teaching twice-exceptional students, and obstacles they found while teaching these students. Moustakas’ (1994) transcendental model to find the essence of the phenomenon was utilized to collect data through interviewing participants, conducting online focus groups, …
