Performance Of Anaerobic Digestion Systems: A Review, Douglas Thompson, Sree Nanukuttan, Daniel Mcpolin Nov 2019

Performance Of Anaerobic Digestion Systems: A Review, Douglas Thompson, Sree Nanukuttan, Daniel Mcpolin

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Anaerobic digesters contain extreme environments that change drastically during the production cycle. Organic material is broken down first into amino and fatty acids, then into volatile fatty acids, ammonia, CO2, H2S and other by-products. These acids and alcohols are converted to acetic acid as well as CO2 and H2, which is then used to create methane. All these biological processes mean that the pH, temperature and type of bacteria vary, creating conditions outside the scope of current standards, such as a concentration of ammonium ions 8 times greater than the upper limit of …

Toxic Tropics: Purity And Danger In Everywhere In Everyday Life, Liza Grandia Nov 2019

Toxic Tropics: Purity And Danger In Everywhere In Everyday Life, Liza Grandia

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

In contrast to popular images of the tropics as verdant Edens, forest dwellers face various pollutants with little-understood environmental health impacts. Drawing upon long-term ethnographic research in northern Guatemala through the lens of Mary Douglas' work on purity, danger, and culture, this paper describes how the inventive re-use of modern waste exposes rural people to new and unknown toxic substances from “matter out of place.” While environmental justice literature has emphasized industrial, extractive, and military disasters, this note draws attention to the less dramatic yet lethal pollutants encountered in the everyday lives of the rural poor through “chemical trespass.”

Marx In A Gay Bar: Indecent Theology As A Reflection
On The Theology Of Liberation And Sexuality, Marcella Althaus-Reid Nov 2019

Marx In A Gay Bar: Indecent Theology As A Reflection
On The Theology Of Liberation And Sexuality, Marcella Althaus-Reid

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article seeks to analyze the relationship between the theology of liberation and sexuality critically. Without denying Latin American Liberation Theology and Feminist Theology’s influence in her thought, Marcella Althaus-Reid demonstrates exchanges between these theologies and the changes that occurred in recent years. However, both theologies arrived at a limit. It’s necessary to go beyond. This «beyond» is the Indecent Theology that inserts fluid sexuality in the contemporary theological agenda.

Developing A Computer-Managed Mentor Matching System For Graduate Students, Donna J. Knudsen Nov 2019

Developing A Computer-Managed Mentor Matching System For Graduate Students, Donna J. Knudsen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Changes to the higher education landscape resulting from digital-age advancements in technology limit the opportunities for doctoral students and faculty to find one another for research and mentorship pairings as they once did when higher education was a wholly brick and mortar enterprise. Further, doctoral student attrition has remained unmoved at approximately 50% since the 1990s, with studies consistently citing the absence of mentoring (or doctoral students’ dissatisfaction with their mentors) as chief among the factors that contribute to the high rate of attrition. Some predict that the rate of doctoral attrition is as much as 20% higher for programs …

Walking The Line: Renaissance And Reformation Societal Views On Lesbians And Lesbianism, Katherine Haas Nov 2019

Walking The Line: Renaissance And Reformation Societal Views On Lesbians And Lesbianism, Katherine Haas

Ramifications

Despite being popular eras, research concerning the European Renaissance and Reformation often push minorities to the side, instead focusing on the men in power. This paper discusses the social freedoms and restrictions on women loving women from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries in England and mainland Europe, and the changes, or lack thereof, that occurred as the Renaissance transitioned into the Reformation, including examples of religious and legal codes, art and literature, and the lives of women from the time. The author used primary source books and documents along with secondary research articles, books and journals to support her case.

Staying Gold: How A Group Of University Students Created Intergenerational Connections Through Art Museum Programming And Community Collaboration, Eli Burke, Carissa Dicindio Ph.D Nov 2019

Staying Gold: How A Group Of University Students Created Intergenerational Connections Through Art Museum Programming And Community Collaboration, Eli Burke, Carissa Dicindio Ph.D

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

In this article, we examine ways in which an intergenerational art program, Stay Gold, helped build relationships between queer youth and elders in an art museum to combat loneliness, isolation, and disconnection. This museum program was initially designed by university students in a graduate art education course to help form connections between queer youth and elders through art-making, sharing stories, and conversations about art. Participants play a large role in shaping the direction of the program, and the program continues to grow and evolve to include more opportunities for collaboration between youth and elders through group projects and dialogue. Although …

Morality At The Margins: Youth, Language, And Islam In Coastal Kenya [Table Of Contents], Sarah Hillewaert Nov 2019

Morality At The Margins: Youth, Language, And Islam In Coastal Kenya [Table Of Contents], Sarah Hillewaert

Sociology

This book considers the day-to-day lives of young Muslims on Kenya’s island of Lamu, who live simultaneously on the edge and in the center. At the margins of the national and international economy and of Western notions of modernity, Lamu’s inhabitants nevertheless find themselves the focus of campaigns against Islamic radicalization and of Western touristic imaginations of the untouched and secluded.

What does it mean to be young, modern, and Muslim here? How are these denominators imagined and enacted in daily encounters? Documenting the everyday lives of Lamu youth, this ethnography explores how young people negotiate cultural, religious, political, and …

The Implementation Of An Open Source Electronic Medical Record At A Faith-Based Community Clinic, Gabri Warren Nov 2019

The Implementation Of An Open Source Electronic Medical Record At A Faith-Based Community Clinic, Gabri Warren

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Faith-based nursing and healthcare is increasingly gaining popularity as the industry looks to minimize costs and improve health outcomes. Historically, qualitative studies have not shown the extent to which individuals and communities are impacted by health initiatives initiated by faith institutions. Healthcare technology can help support the specialty by providing increased quantity and quality data to analyze. Traditional, proprietary EMRs are too costly; however, open source systems offer a low cost, and easily modifiable option to non-profit, or smaller organizations. The data collected by an open source system allows organizations to improve the care that patients receive, and helps guide …

Spiritual Rituals Of Chinese Ink Painting: The Suggestions Of Shitao, Eva Kit Wah Man Nov 2019

Spiritual Rituals Of Chinese Ink Painting: The Suggestions Of Shitao, Eva Kit Wah Man

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Ritual has an essential connection with art. This article suggests that the study on Shitao has significance in proposing a ritual theory of art for two reasons. First, textual analysis on his treatise on ink painting, Hua-pu, demonstrates that an artist is/should be involved in the interconnectedness of what he or she depicts. This involvement requires penetration into the primordial intuition towards what he or she perceives and has an ethical imperative to use the artist’s talent conferred by heaven. Second, Shitao’s artistic practice is interpreted as a form of rites that are a reaction to the sociopolitical changes …

Monsters In Society: Alterity, Transgression, And The Use Of The Past In Medieval Iceland, Rebecca Merkelbach Nov 2019

Monsters In Society: Alterity, Transgression, And The Use Of The Past In Medieval Iceland, Rebecca Merkelbach

Northern Medieval World

Dragons, giants, and the monsters of learned discourse are rarely encountered in the Sagas of Icelanders, and therefore, the general teratological focus on physical monstrosity yields only limited results when applied to them. This, however, does not equal an absence of monstrosity — it only means that monstrosity is conceived of differently. This book shifts the view of monstrosity from the physical to the social, accounting for the unique social circumstances presented in the Íslendingasögur and demonstrating how closely interwoven the social and the monstrous are in this genre. Employing literary and cultural theory as well as anthropological and historical …

The Tragedy Of Theresa Sturla: Murder, Insanity, And Womanhood On Trial In Nineteenth-Century Chicago, Jake Engelman Nov 2019

The Tragedy Of Theresa Sturla: Murder, Insanity, And Womanhood On Trial In Nineteenth-Century Chicago, Jake Engelman

Theses and Dissertations

On the morning of July 10, 1882, a young prostitute named Theresa Sturla murdered her lover, Charles Stiles, on the sixth floor of the Palmer House in Chicago. During her trial four months later, Sturla’s attorney employed a dual argument of self-defense and insanity. He claimed that his client suffered from dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation, and that she had gone temporarily insane at the time of the murder due to her defective reproductive system. According to the defense, Stiles’ abuse toward his mistress had exacerbated the disease and her only solution was to respond with violence. After a month-long trial, …

Learning To Think In The Language Of Strangers: Indigenous Education In A Colonized And Globalized Pacific, Konai Helu Thaman

International Journal of Human Rights Education

This notes from the field article is about my personal, educational, and professional journeys as an Indigenous woman living and working in the small island states of Oceania. My own story describes the struggles that continue today among many young Indigenous students, be they in school or in higher education institutions with structures and processes that do not take their cultural backgrounds or identities into consideration. The results are often damaging both to the students, as well as to the institutions themselves. However, in this work, I advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous knowledges in education, as I have for …
