Predictors Of Balloon Guide Catheter Assistance Success In Stent-Retrieval Thrombectomy For An Anterior Circulation Acute Ischemic Stroke, Brian Snelling Aug 2019

Predictors Of Balloon Guide Catheter Assistance Success In Stent-Retrieval Thrombectomy For An Anterior Circulation Acute Ischemic Stroke, Brian Snelling

All Publications

Introduction Mechanical thrombectomy has become the standard treatment for large vessel occlusion (LVO) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in well-selected patients. Although many devices and strategies exist, the use of a balloon-tip guide catheter (BGC) with stent-retriever (SR) may hold several advantages. We aim to assess the efficacy and identify predictors of technical success of this unique approach. Methods From our prospectively maintained database, we identified consecutive cases in which a BGC was used for stent-retriever thrombectomy in anterior circulation LVO between 2015 and 2016. Baseline and procedural characteristics were captured and analyzed. Predictors of technical and clinical outcomes were …

Water Quality And Algal Bloom Sensing From Multiple Imaging Platforms, Ryan Ford Aug 2019

Water Quality And Algal Bloom Sensing From Multiple Imaging Platforms, Ryan Ford

Theses

Harmful cyanobacteria blooms have been increasing in frequency throughout the world resulting in a greater need for water quality monitoring. Traditional methods of monitoring water quality, such as point sampling, are often resource expensive and time consuming in comparison to remote sensing approaches, however the spatial resolution of established water remote sensing satellites is often too coarse (300 m) to resolve smaller inland waterbodies. The fine scale spatial resolution and improved radiometric sensitivity of Landsat satellites (30 m) can resolve these smaller waterbodies, enabling their capability for cyanobacteria bloom monitoring.

In this work, the utility of Landsat to retrieve concentrations …

Monitoring Hydrologic Factors Influencing Bog Turtle Persistence At A Site In Connecticut, Julie Webb Aug 2019

Monitoring Hydrologic Factors Influencing Bog Turtle Persistence At A Site In Connecticut, Julie Webb

Master's Theses

A calcareous fen that supported one of the few populations of bog turtles (Glyptemys muhlenbergii) in Connecticut has been shown by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to have declined with no sitings reported since 2004. This study evaluates the current hydrology of the fen in question to provide insight as to why it may be no longer habitable. Possible reasons for turtle decline identified at the outset of the project included salt contamination from deicing of a state road, periodic flooding from seasonal storms, nutrient and pesticide runoff from the draining farms, potential drying …

Sensory Relevance Models, Walt Woods Aug 2019

Sensory Relevance Models, Walt Woods

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation concerns methods for improving the reliability and quality of explanations for decisions based on Neural Networks (NNs). NNs are increasingly part of state-of-the-art solutions for a broad range of fields, including biomedical, logistics, user-recommendation engines, defense, and self-driving vehicles. While NNs form the backbone of these solutions, they are often viewed as "black box" solutions, meaning the only output offered is a final decision, with no insight into how or why that particular decision was made. For high-stakes fields, such as biomedical, where lives are at risk, it is often more important to be able to explain a …

Colonized And Racist Indigenous Campus Tour: Research-In-Brief, Robin Minthorn, Christine A. Nelson

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

This Research-in-Brief explores the macro-structural aspects of college campuses and environments to understand how higher education institutions have created, maintained, and justified hostile campus climates against Indigenous students. It uncovers the embedded racist and genocidal values that are often cherished through dominant campus tours. This includes addressing how an incomplete understanding of history leads to centering oppressive values that disenfranchise Indigenous students in higher education. Offered is an abbreviated interpretation of the concept of Power and Place (Deloria & Wildcat, 2001), centering critical Indigenous values in the assessment. The case study articulates the historical and contemporary aspects of space and …

Computing Observation Geometry For Small Satellites, Charles H. Acton Aug 2019

Computing Observation Geometry For Small Satellites, Charles H. Acton

Small Satellite Conference

Most solar system science missions need a variety of observation geometry–quantities such as position and velocity; range and altitude; viewing latitude and longitude; and lighting angles–to support mission engineering, science planning, and science data analysis activities. NASA's "SPICE" system offers one popular, multi-mission means for doing just that. SPICE comprises both data files, called kernels, and a SPICE software. A mission operations center produces the SPICE kernel files. Scientists and engineers write their own applications programs to address some need, and they include a few SPICE subroutines within that code to do the needed geometry computations. The SPICE system has …

Design Of An In-Situ Sensor Package To Track Cubesat Deployments, Aaron P. Aboaf, Nicholas W. Renninger, Lara C. Lufkin Aug 2019

Design Of An In-Situ Sensor Package To Track Cubesat Deployments, Aaron P. Aboaf, Nicholas W. Renninger, Lara C. Lufkin

Small Satellite Conference

Currently, radar measurements of low-earth-orbit CubeSats are only possible during a small portion of a CubeSat’s orbit – typically long after the CubeSat’s deployment – making near real-time space situational awareness (SSA) difficult. The CU Boulder Smead Aerospace Engineering Department has developed a concept to monitor CubeSat deployments from the deployer itself and provide relative position and velocity measurements of deployed payloads to provide faster orbital parameter estimation. Teaming with NanoRacks LLC, the VANTAGE team (Visual Approximation of Nanosat Trajectories to Augment Ground-based Estimation) has developed an innovative sensor package prototype consisting of an Infra-red (IR) Time of Flight (ToF) …

Addressing The Anthropology Of Business Ethics: Insights From Catholic Social Thought, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen Aug 2019

Addressing The Anthropology Of Business Ethics: Insights From Catholic Social Thought, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

This paper proposes an alternate anthropology as seen in the Vocation of a Business Leader, a document on business and Catholic social thought, which responds to the question of what good economics and business ethics is, and the Economy of Communion, that seeks to live such an anthropology out concretely in business. This anthropology is grounded in an understanding of the human being that focuses on relationality, the common good, solidarity, and subsidiarity, which undergirds a communitarian model of business. Such a communitarian model of business is more line with the public’s expectation of business as a social force for …

Extending Video Games By Using Machine Learning, Leon Nicholls Aug 2019

Extending Video Games By Using Machine Learning, Leon Nicholls

Defensive Publications Series

Video game development requires significant design and coding effort to develop levels, characters, movements, animations, and other elements that are tied to the game engine. Once a game is completed and published, play by users is typically restricted to the actions and choices made possible by the developer of the video game, without customization or alteration. While user-developed modifications exist, developing such modifications requires significant effort. This disclosure describes the use of machine learning techniques to extend video games. A machine learning model is trained based on game play of a game and learns features of the game such as …

Kanwaljeet S. Anand Oral History. Aug 2019

Kanwaljeet S. Anand Oral History.

Pediatric Palliative Care Oral History Project

Dr. Kanwaljeet Anand begins the interview by describing his journey into pediatric pain and symptom management through his work examining metabolic and hormonal stress responses of infants undergoing surgery. From this work, he retraced history to understand where the notion of "babies don't feel pain" came from, and then eventually studied more closely the pain responses of infants.

Dr. Anand describes how he was surprised to find that babies mounted three times the metabolic stress response to surgery as compared to adults, and how his pediatric pain research initially received a lukewarm response from his peers. However, that lukewarm response …

An Effective Electric Dipole Model For Voltage-Induced Gating Mechanism Of Lysenin, Eric Krueger, Daniel Fologea Aug 2019

An Effective Electric Dipole Model For Voltage-Induced Gating Mechanism Of Lysenin, Eric Krueger, Daniel Fologea

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lysenin is a pore-forming toxin, which self-inserts open channels into sphingomyelin containing membranes and is known to be voltage regulated. The mechanistic details of its voltage gating mechanism, however, remains elusive despite much recent efforts. Here, we have employed a novel combination of experimental and computational techniques to examine a model for voltage gating, that is based on the existence of an “effective electric dipole” inspired by recent reported structures of lysenin. We support this mechanism by the observations that (i) the charge-reversal and neutralization substitutions in lysenin result in changing its electrical gating properties by modifying the strength of …

The Influence Of Signaling Conspecific And Heterospecific Neighbors On Eavesdropper Pressure, Paula A. Trillo, Christopher S. Benson, Michael S. Caldwell, Tiffany L. Lam, Oliver H. Pickering, David M. Logue Aug 2019

The Influence Of Signaling Conspecific And Heterospecific Neighbors On Eavesdropper Pressure, Paula A. Trillo, Christopher S. Benson, Michael S. Caldwell, Tiffany L. Lam, Oliver H. Pickering, David M. Logue

Biology Faculty Publications

The study of tradeoffs between the attraction of mates and the attraction of eavesdropping predators and parasites has generally focused on a single species of prey, signaling in isolation. In nature, however, animals often signal from mixed-species aggregations, where interactions with heterospecific group members may be an important mechanism modulating tradeoffs between sexual and natural selection, and thus driving signal evolution. Although studies have shown that conspecific signalers can influence eavesdropper pressure on mating signals, the effects of signaling heterospecifics on eavesdropper pressure, and on the balance between natural and sexual selection, are likely to be different. Here, we review …

In a series of boxes in the D.H. Hill Library at North Carolina State sit scores of historical pamphlets and newspaper articles advocating an end to cruelty toward animals. The documents date back to the nineteenth century, and provide an undeniable record of the history of strong public sentiment against the mistreatment of animals. The collection preserves the stories of countless activists who opposed inhumane treatment in slaughterhouses, research labs, the entertainment industry, transport, and sport, among other endeavors. These activists dedicated inspiring amounts of time, energy, and resources to a cause that is seldom given the attention that it …

Choline: Exploring The Growing Science On Its Benefits For Moms And Babies, Hunter W. Korsmo, Xinyin Jiang, Marie A. Caudill Aug 2019

Choline: Exploring The Growing Science On Its Benefits For Moms And Babies, Hunter W. Korsmo, Xinyin Jiang, Marie A. Caudill

Publications and Research

The importance of ensuring adequate choline intakes during pregnancy is increasingly recognized. Choline is critical for a number of physiological processes during the prenatal period with roles in membrane biosynthesis and tissue expansion, neurotransmission and brain development, and methyl group donation and gene expression. Studies in animals and humans have shown that supplementing the maternal diet with additional choline improves several pregnancy outcomes and protects against certain neural and metabolic insults. Most pregnant women in the U.S. are not achieving choline intake recommendations of 450 mg/day and would likely benefit from boosting their choline intakes through dietary and/or supplemental approaches.

Psychology Faculty Publications

Metaphors linking the heart to warm intuition and the head to cold rationality may capture important differences between people because some locate the self in the heart and others locate the self in the head. Five studies (total N = 2575) link these individual differences to religious beliefs. Study 1 found that religious beliefs were stronger among heart-locators than head-locators. Studies 2 and 3 replicated this relationship in more diverse samples. Studies 4 and 5 focused on questions of mediation. Heart-locators believed in God to a greater extent partly because of empathy-related processes (Study 4) and partly because they tended …

Oxytocin Receptor Genotype And Serotonin Transporter Genotype As Mediators Of Social Behavior: A Rhesus Macaque Model, Ryno Kruger Aug 2019

Oxytocin Receptor Genotype And Serotonin Transporter Genotype As Mediators Of Social Behavior: A Rhesus Macaque Model, Ryno Kruger

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Studies suggest that sociality plays a major role in physical and mental health, with loneliness, hostility, and aggression contributing to ill health. Genetic variation functions as a foundational basis for positive sociality, as well as antisocial behaviors such as social alienation and aggression. It is widely believed that the central serotonin and oxytocin systems are two neurotransmitter systems that play important roles in sociality and antisocial behavior. In this study, we investigate the genetic impact of the serotonin transporter gene (SERT) and a recently discovered oxytocin receptor (OXTR) gene on social isolation and antisocial behavior using a rhesus monkey model …

Background: Verubecestat, a BACE1 inhibitor that reduces Aβ levels in the cerebrospinal fluid of humans, was not effective in a phase 3 trial (EPOCH) of mild-to-moderate AD and was associated with adverse events. To assist in the development of BACE1 inhibitors, we report detailed safety findings from EPOCH. Methods: EPOCH was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 78-week trial evaluating verubecestat 12 mg and 40 mg in participants with mild-to-moderate AD diagnosed clinically. The trial was terminated due to futility close to its scheduled completion. Of 1957 participants who were randomized and took treatment, 652 were assigned to verubecestat 12 mg, 652 …

Characterization Of Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Serine-600 Phosphorylation, Kevin Patel Aug 2019

Characterization Of Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Serine-600 Phosphorylation, Kevin Patel

Master of Science in Chemical Sciences Theses

Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is part of a family of three nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes that catalyze the production of nitric oxide (NO). NO is a gaseous, free-radical signaling molecule that has a variety of cellular and physiological functions that range from maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis to neurotransmission. The function of NO greatly depends on the concentration and is cell type specific. eNOS is the most regulated of the three NOS isoforms and the mechanisms of regulation can be through protein-protein interactions and posttranslational modifications. A connection with eNOS and the cell cycle has begun to form with recent …

Parr Going The Distance: How Migratory Difficulty Influences Red Muscle Lipid Storage In Juvenile Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Emily Jean Morse

Dissertations and Theses

Adult salmonid populations embarking on difficult migrations have evolved to store more somatic energy prior to river entry. While it is known that lipids are the primary fuel for endurance swimming in fish, uncertainty still surrounds how these mechanisms are utilized by juvenile fish during seaward migration. A key phase in salmonid migration is the preparatory season of feeding and growth before swimming downstream. During this period, juvenile fish build somatic fuel stores through dietary uptake. Intestinal microbiota of steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) vary drastically across their geographic range, with significant differences in the coastal and inland subspecies' …

Catalyzing Privacy Law, Anupam Chander, Margot E. Kaminski, William Mcgeveran

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The United States famously lacks a comprehensive federal data privacy law. In the past year, however, over half the states have proposed broad privacy bills or have established task forces to propose possible privacy legislation. Meanwhile, congressional committees are holding hearings on multiple privacy bills. What is catalyzing this legislative momentum? Some believe that Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force in 2018, is the driving factor. But with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) which took effect in January 2020, California has emerged as an alternate contender in the race to set the new standard for …

Unlocking The Next Generation Of Nano-Satellite Missions With 320 Mbps Ka-Band Downlink: On-Orbit Results, Kyle Leveque, Louis Carleton, Jan King, Zach Cuseo, Russell Babb

Small Satellite Conference

Relatively low downlink data rates have historically limited the scientific and commercial return from CubeSats and SmallSats. As the capability of payloads for these satellites continues to increase, high-speed downlink capability is required to realize the increasing potential from these systems. In this paper we present the on-orbit results of our high-speed Ka-band transmitter operating aboard the twin Corvus-BC3 and Corvus-BC4 6U CubeSats. The 1-U form factor Ka-band system enables the unprecedented data return from a multi-spectral imager in this class of spacecraft. We highlight the spacecraft design and operational challenges that have been overcome on these missions that will …
