On Video Analysis Of Omnidirectional Bee Traffic: Counting Bee Motions With Motion Detection And Image Classification, Vladmir Kulyukin, Sarbajit Mukherjee
Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications
Omnidirectional bee traffic is the number of bees moving in arbitrary directions in close proximity to the landing pad of a given hive over a given period of time. Video bee traffic analysis has the potential to automate the assessment of omnidirectional bee traffic levels, which, in turn, may lead to a complete or partial automation of honeybee colony health assessment. In this investigation, we proposed, implemented, and partially evaluated a two-tier method for counting bee motions to estimate levels of omnidirectional bee traffic in bee traffic videos. Our method couples motion detection with image classification so that motion detection …

The Skiles Mummy: Care Of A Debilitated Hunter-Gatherer Evidenced By Coprolite Studies And Stable Isotopic Analysis Of Hair, Kirsten A. Verostick, Isabel Teixeira-Santos, Vaughn M. Bryant Jr., Karl Reinhard
Karl Reinhard Publications
The Skiles Mummy (SMM), a naturally mummified adult male from the late archaic period of Lower Pecos Canyonlands of South Texas, represents a unique case of care. SMM is an exceptional mummy within this region due to both the retention of a full head of hair, and having a diagnosed case of megacolon, a complication commonly associated with Chagas disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Stable isotopic analysis of his hair is consistent with a diet incorporating of C4/CAM plants with some C3 plants, freshwater resources, and higher trophic level animals. However, the segments of hair most …

History And/Through Oral Narratives: Relocating Women Of The 1971 War Of Bangladesh In Neelima Ibrahim’S A War Heroine, I Speak, Sanjib Kr Biswas, Priyanka Tripathi
Journal of International Women's Studies
In the postmodern era, one of the primary objectives of oral narratives is to tell the untold stories of history. Amidst the allegations that historical representation of war narratives, tend to be gendered and biased, these oral narratives of women offer not only a fresh perspective to the wars like the 1971 war of Bangladesh, the Sri Lankan Civil War (1983 – 2009) and the Kashmir Insurgency (1989 – present), but also become their own version of pain, suffering, prejudice, and plight. In that sense, they become the voice of the voiceless, giving the victims a chance to assert themselves, …
Media Empowers Brave Girls To Be Global Activists, Gayle Kimball
Media Empowers Brave Girls To Be Global Activists, Gayle Kimball
Journal of International Women's Studies
A surprising way to silence young women globally, in addition to overly protective families, is by scholars of youth studies and development professionals. Ageism against youth is rarely discussed, so this article reveals this academic bias that ignores or discounts youth voices—especially young women. However, in the safe space of their bedrooms, the Internet and the cell phone enable young women to express their voices, even to organize uprisings. They can get around family restrictions and desires to protect them by speaking publicly from a private space. Some media provide empowering images for young women activists and informative networks of …

The Suffering Joker And The Cruel Joke: Nabokov's And Bellow's Dark Laughter, Gerald David Naughton, Yulia Pushkarevskaya Naughton
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article interrogates the interrelationship between cruelty, suffering, and laughter in novels by Saul Bellow and Vladimir Nabokov, positing an affective reading of how bodies that suffer come to produce laughter as a confounding, unexpected, and at times inappropriate readerly affect. Nabokov’s Laughter in the Dark and Bellow’s Henderson the Rain King both explore suffering as a form of excessive somatic cruelty inflicted on protagonists who, in experiencing such punishment, engender a strange, troubling, and potentially transformative form of laughter. In order to bring together a discussion of the body, suffering, cruelty, and laughter in Nabokov and Bellow, the essay …
Becoming As Suffering: A Genealogy Of Female Suffering In Chinese Myth And Literature, Peina Zhuang, Jiazhao Lin
Becoming As Suffering: A Genealogy Of Female Suffering In Chinese Myth And Literature, Peina Zhuang, Jiazhao Lin
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article “Suffering as Becoming: A Genealogy of Female Suffering in Chinese Myth and Literature,” Peina Zhuang and Jiazhao Lin undertake a comparative study of three Chinese mythical and literary novels: the Chinese myths of Chang’eh, Ding Ling’s Miss Sophie’s (1928), and Bi Feiyu’s novel The Moon Opera (1999). They focus on the point that the characterization of all three women (or female personae) is centered on their common act of taking some sort of medicine. However, they also historicize and politicize these three texts, setting them respectively in the contexts of the establishment of patriarchy in the Han …
Suffering And Climate Change Narratives, Simon C. Estok
Suffering And Climate Change Narratives, Simon C. Estok
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Suffering and Climate Change Narratives" Simon C. Estok begins with a brief survey of definitional issues involved with the term “suffering” and argues that there has been a relative lack of theoretical attention to suffering in climate change narratives, whether literary or within mainstream media. Estok shows that suffering, far from being singular, is a multivalent concept that is gendered, classed, raced, and, perhaps above all, pliable. It has social functions. One of the primary reasons for the failure of climate change narratives to effect real changes, Estok argues, is that they often carry the functions of …
The Punctum In History: Representing The M(Other)’S Death In Peter Handke’S A Sorrow Beyond Dreams, Hivren Demir Atay
The Punctum In History: Representing The M(Other)’S Death In Peter Handke’S A Sorrow Beyond Dreams, Hivren Demir Atay
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article aims to discuss how Handke’s autobiographical narrative, A Sorrow Beyond Dreams (1972), stages the writer’s literary project through a neutral account of his mother’s suicide. Telling the story of his mother, who witnessed the Second World War and the nazi regime, Handke narrates the traumatic history of an Austrian town along with his own suffering. Concentrating on his attempt at a distanced language and his questioning of history as an objective fact, the article suggests that Handke’s perception of death and mourning parallels his understanding of the acts of writing and reading. Drawing particularly on Barthes’s concept …
Eating And Suffering In Han Kang’S The Vegetarian, Won-Chung Kim
Eating And Suffering In Han Kang’S The Vegetarian, Won-Chung Kim
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article “Eating and Suffering in Han Kang’s The Vegetarian” Won-Chung Kim examines how Han investigates suffering through the topic of food and eating. Kim shows that The Vegetarian is a work that thoroughly investigates both what constitutes suffering and what role carno-phallogocentric thinking can play in such suffering: suffering becomes in the novel a psychological, physical, and spiritual effect of dietary resistance to male-dominated Korean society. After offering a working definition of sufferings, Kim argues how the suffering caused by Yeong-hye’s refusal to follow the reigning norms of the meat eating, patriarchal society disintegrates the intactness of …

The Different Representation Of Suffering In The Two Versions Of The Vegetarian, Young-Hyun Lee
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article “The Different Representation of Suffering in the two versions of The Vegetarian” the author examines how different the representation of suffering in the original and translated versions of The Vegetarian and explores the reasons for this difference. The author in particular refers to representative episodes which the translator’s strategy distorts even the central concepts of suffering in the original work. Her translated version results in critical misrepresentation of suffering and violence in the original version.
Enduring The Long Take: Tsai Ming-Liang’S Stray Dogs And The Dialectical Image, Louis Lo
Enduring The Long Take: Tsai Ming-Liang’S Stray Dogs And The Dialectical Image, Louis Lo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This essay attempts to show that Tsai’s Stray Dogs (2013) offers a social critique of Taipei as a neoliberal, global, consumer city, and by so doing establishes a cinema of contemplation through such cinematic devices as the sustained long-take and slow, virtually still cinematic images. By developing Walter Benjamin’s formulation of the dialectical image, this essay explores the extent to which Tsai’s cinematic aesthetics reveals an aspect of the city which cannot be shown otherwise. It argues that his slow cinema creates a potentially revolutionary awakening in an audience accustomed to an immersive mode of cinematic experience which turns the …
Shelley’S Frankenstein As A Book Of Love And Despair, Shun-Liang Chao
Shelley’S Frankenstein As A Book Of Love And Despair, Shun-Liang Chao
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Influenced by Enlightenment philosophes like Rousseau and Smith, Romantic writers, such as Coleridge and Percy Shelley, celebrate the sublime power of sympathetic love to merge the self and the other (be it human or inhuman) into a wondrous whole, thereby precluding the dangers of solitude and solipsism. Not all Romantic writers, however, share the same sanguine view of love. In Frankenstein, for instance, Mary Shelley offers an alternative to the optimistic perspective on the capacity of (mutual) sympathy. She shapes the novel into tales of bitter solitude, one caused by the lack of sympathetic understanding between Victor and nature, …
Narrating Animal Suffering In Ye Guangqin’S Animal Stories, Chao Xie
Narrating Animal Suffering In Ye Guangqin’S Animal Stories, Chao Xie
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article “Narrating Animal Suffering in Ye Guangqin’s Animal Stories,” Chao Xie analyzes animal suffering depicted in the contemporary Chinese writer Ye Guangqin’s animal story collection The Tiger Dafu (2004). Through reading the interconnected suffering of animals and humans represented in Ye’s works, Xie argues that Ye expresses an attitude of posthumanism which is needed to examine animal suffering. The shared victimhood between animals and humans in Ye’s works, which is largely due to the process of Chinese modernization, provides a new insight into the idea of the Anthropocene.
Introduction To Suffering, Endurance, Understanding: New Discourses Within Philosophy And Literature, Douglas S. Berman
Introduction To Suffering, Endurance, Understanding: New Discourses Within Philosophy And Literature, Douglas S. Berman
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Literature is generally seen as depicting the lives of human subjects through their unique narratives. And that, while its endpoint may be universal, it is typically grounded in the specificity of a human being (or, occasionally, an animal). Philosophy is tasked with providing the foundational cognitive tools to grasp the meaning of experience for the whole. In Hegelian terms, it unfolds the history of the concept. Yet, as George Steiner, Jacques Derrida, and other recent authors have shown, both philosophy – along with its agonistic cousin, religion -- evoke literary themes, rhetorics, and struggles. Over the past fifty years, Continental …

Breeding colonies of birds represent groups of individuals that associate during one breeding season, at least partially dissociate for the non-breeding season, and may re-associate the next year through collective settlement at another breeding site. Little is known about the extent to which colonial birds maintain group integrity when occupying different sites in different years or the benefits of long-term associations among colonial individuals. For cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) in western Nebraska, USA, we examined ecological correlates and potential benefits associated with group integrity. Using a dataset of over 25,000 individuals, we found that associations between dispersing cliff swallows were …

Book Review: Paradigms Of International Human Rights, By Aaron Xavier Fellmeth, Eric Freeman
Book Review: Paradigms Of International Human Rights, By Aaron Xavier Fellmeth, Eric Freeman
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Aaron Xavier Fellmeth's Paradigms of International Human Rights Law makes an important contribution to the scholarship on international human rights law (IHRL). In the introduction, Fellmeth begins by noting that previous scholarly literature on IHRL has often focused on the content and enforceability of human rights, but that the broader structure and framing of human rights has been undertheorized. With that in mind, Fellmeth identifies that the first purpose of his book “is to begin a structural critique of some of [the] systemic features of IHRL.” The second purpose is “to make some progress in bridging moral theory with legal …

3D printing/bioprinting are promising techniques to fabricate scaffolds with well controlled and patient-specific structures and architectures for bone tissue engineering. In this study, we developed a composite bioink consisting of silk fibroin (SF), gelatin (GEL), hyaluronic acid (HA), and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and 3D bioprinted the silk fibroin-based hybrid scaffolds. The 3D bioprinted scaffolds with dual crosslinking were further treated with human platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to generate PRP coated scaffolds. Live/Dead and MTT assays demonstrated that PRP treatment could obviously promote the cell growth and proliferation of human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (HADMSC). In addition, the treatment of PRP …

Condition Bias Of Decoy‐Harvested Light Geese During The Conservation Order, Drew N. Fowler, Elisabeth B. Webb, Mark P. Vrtiska
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Evidence that decoy harvest techniques primarily remove individuals of poorer body condition is well established in short‐lived duck species; however, there is limited support for condition bias in longer‐lived waterfowl species, such as geese, where decoy harvest is considered primarily additive because of their high natural survival rates. We evaluated support for the harvest condition bias hypothesis of 2 long‐lived waterfowl species, the lesser snow goose (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) and Ross’s goose (Anser rossii). We used proximate analysis to quantify lipid and protein content of lesser snow and Ross’s geese collected during the Light Goose Conservation Order (LGCO) in 2015 …

The Impact Of Estradiol And Stress On Spatial Memory, Soniya Assudani Patel
Doctoral Dissertations
Spatial memory is a critical cognitive function that involves for navigating, interpreting, and representing environments, planning a route, remembering the location of an object or event, and understanding spatial configurations. The three studies presented are original investigations on how estradiol, anxiety, and stress influence hippocampal-dependent spatial memory. The first study assessed the impact of estradiol level on spatial memory in young adult women. Salivary assays were obtained to determine the exact estradiol level. Women at the high and low estradiol phases of their natural menstrual cycle were compared to each other and to women on oral contraceptives (OCs). Behavioral performance …
