Cardiac hypertrophy often causes impairment of cardiac function. Xenon (Xe), a naturally occurring noble gas, is known to provide neurological and myocardial protection without side effects. The conventional method of Xe delivery by inhalation is not feasible on a chronic basis. We have developed an orally deliverable, effective Xe formulation for long-term administration. We employed 2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD), which was dissolved in water to increase the Xe concentration in solution. The beneficial effects of long-term oral administration of Xe-enriched solutions on cardiovascular function were evaluated in vivo. HPCD increased Xe solubility from 0.22 mM to 0.67 mM (3.8-fold). Aged ApoE knockout …

Data Mining Raman Microspectroscopic Responses Of Cells To Drugs In Vitro Using Multivariate Curve Resolution-Alternating Least Squares, David Perez-Guaita, Guillermo Quintas, Zeineb Farhane, Roma Tauler, Hugh Byrne
Articles
Raman microspectroscopy is gaining popularity for the analysis of time-dependent biological processes such as drug uptake and cellular response. It is a label-free technique which acquires signals from a large variety of components, including cell biomolecules and exogenous compounds such as drugs and nanoparticles, and is commonly employed for in vitro analysis of cells and cell populations with no labelling or staining required. By monitoring the changes to the Raman spectra of the cell as a result of a perturbing agent (e.g. inoculation of a drug or toxic agent), one can study the associated changes in cell biochemistry involved in …

Engaging Residents In Participatory Photomapping And Readiness Conversations To Address The Rural Obesogenic Context, Kirstin D. Jensen, Kathee Tifft, Tammy Winfield, Kathy Gunter, Grace Goc Karp, Deborah H. John
Journal of Extension
Extension engaged rural Idaho community stakeholders to assess local resources and readiness to address obesogenic contexts through use of the Extension tool HEAL MAPPS. Through participatory photomapping, focus group involvement, and a community readiness conversation, residents identified environmental resources and local efforts as supports for and barriers to healthful eating and active living. Findings indicated that the community was "vaguely aware" that rural obesity risk is a socioenvironmentally determined issue. Extension professionals using HEAL MAPPS effectively promoted new and shared knowledge of weight health resources among community members, enabled rural residents to have a voice in addressing the community context, …

3D face alignment approaches have strong advantages over 2D with respect to representational power and robustness to illumination and pose. Over the past few years, a number of research groups have made rapid advances in dense 3D alignment from 2D video and obtained impressive results. How these various methods compare is relatively unknown. Previous benchmarks addressed sparse 3D alignment and single image 3D reconstruction. No commonly accepted evaluation protocol exists for dense 3D face reconstruction from video with which to compare them. The 2nd 3D Face Alignment in the Wild from Videos (3DFAW-Video) Challenge extends the previous 3DFAW 2016 competition …

Synthesis and characterization of the first mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) containing tantalum are reported here, along with their potential application as hemostats. Silica MBGs were synthesized using with the molar composition of (80-x)% Si, 15% Ca, 5% P, and x% Ta. It was found that incorporation of >1 mol % Ta into the MBGs changes their physical and chemical properties. Increasing Ta content from 0 to 10 mol % causes a decrease in the surface area and pore volume of ~20 and ~35%, respectively. This is due to the increase in nonbridging oxygens and mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient which …

Innovating Authentically: Cultural Differentiation In The Animation Sector, Susan Standing, Craig Standing
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper examines the concept of authentic innovation and the development of the animation industry in Malaysia. Authenticity is a concept that has been investigated from philosophical and institutional perspectives in the quest to explain the role of self-fulfillment and decision-making. It links with systems thinking because authenticity as a strategy requires a holistic approach since it is based upon values that influence action. The desire for authenticity can create expression outside the norms and produce innovation. We present interpretations of authenticity, explain the concept of authentic innovation and relate this to three case studies of Malaysian animation studios. We …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Genetic factors influence susceptibility to diabetic kidney disease. Here we mapped genes mediating renal hypertrophic changes in response to diabetes. A survey of 15 mouse strains identified variation in diabetic kidney hypertrophy. Strains with greater (FVB/N(FVB)) and lesser (C57BL/6 (B6)) responses were crossed and diabetic F2 progeny were characterized. Kidney weights of diabetic F2 mice were broadly distributed. Quantitative trait locus analyses revealed diabetic mice with kidney weights in the upper quartile shared alleles on chromosomes (chr) 6 and 12; these loci were designated as Diabetic kidney hypertrophy (Dkh)-1 and -2. To confirm these loci, reciprocal congenic mice were …
Quantification Of Mitochondrial Membrane Potential In The Isloated Rat Lung Using R6g, Anthony Cammarata
Quantification Of Mitochondrial Membrane Potential In The Isloated Rat Lung Using R6g, Anthony Cammarata
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Mitochondrial membrane potential (Δm) plays a key role in vital mitochondrial functions, and its dissipation is a hallmark of mitochondrial dysfunction in various cell types. The objective of this study was to develop an experimental and computational approach for estimating Δm in intact rat lungs using the lipophilic fluorescent cationic dye rhodamine 6G (R6G). Rat lungs were isolated and connected to a ventilation-perfusion system. The experimental Protocol consisted of three single-pass phases: loading, wash, and uncoupling, in which the lungs were perfused with R6G-containing perfusate, fresh R6G-free perfusate, or R6G-free perfusate containing the mitochondrial uncoupler FCCP, respectively. This Protocol was …
The Biogeochemical Behavior And Speciation Of Mercury In The Sea Surface Microlayer: Implications For Transport To Watersheds Via Fog, Alexander J. Olson
The Biogeochemical Behavior And Speciation Of Mercury In The Sea Surface Microlayer: Implications For Transport To Watersheds Via Fog, Alexander J. Olson
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Neurotoxic monomethylmercury (MMHg) found in coastal Central California marine advective fog is thought to be a source of elevated MMHg levels throughout the terrestrial coastal foodweb. While not currently present at hazardous concentrations for human exposure directly (17-54 pM), MMHg in fog along the coast poses potential health and ecosystem threats via food-web bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes. The likely marine source and the mechanism of its transport remain unknown.
While 2014 vertical profiles from coastal California show surface waters (<6 m) relatively deplete in MMHg (25-185 fM), similar to other ocean basins, surface grab sampling revealed elevated concentrations of MMHg in the uppermost (top ~100 m) portion of the water column known as the surface microlayer (SML). When corrected for dilution during sampling, this could represent a SML concentration of MMHg as high as 1.3 nM, orders of magnitude greater than the localized seawater and fog water; as well as the first such known measurements.
Further refined sampling in 2015 of nearshore and offshore waters of California and Oregon supported 2014 findings, with underlying bullk …

Termites are major biotic factors that contribute to crop damage and yield losses to maize (Zea mays L.) in western Ethiopia. This study evaluated mulching maize stover, intercropping maize with soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) and desmodium (Desmodium intortum (Mill.) Urb.), and integration of mulching and intercropping for their effectiveness in reducing damage of Microtermes spp mainly Microtermes vadschaggae Sjostedt and Microtermes adschaggae (Sjosted) to maize. Five termite management treatments and a control (sole maize) were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates on 2 farm sites in 2016 and 7 sites in 2017 cropping seasons in …
Fusion Of Multimodal Embeddings For Ad-Hoc Video Search, Danny Francis, Phuong Anh Nguyen, Benoit Huet, Chong-Wah Ngo
Fusion Of Multimodal Embeddings For Ad-Hoc Video Search, Danny Francis, Phuong Anh Nguyen, Benoit Huet, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The challenge of Ad-Hoc Video Search (AVS) originates from free-form (i.e., no pre-defined vocabulary) and freestyle (i.e., natural language) query description. Bridging the semantic gap between AVS queries and videos becomes highly difficult as evidenced from the low retrieval accuracy of AVS benchmarking in TRECVID. In this paper, we study a new method to fuse multimodal embeddings which have been derived based on completely disjoint datasets. This method is tested on two datasets for two distinct tasks: on MSR-VTT for unique video retrieval and on V3C1 for multiple videos retrieval.

Evaluation Of Sigfox Lpwan For Sensor-Enabled Homes To Identify At Risk Community Dwelling Seniors, Crys Tan, Hwee-Pink Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
It is projected that Singapore will become superaged (where 20% of its population will comprise seniors) by 2025. Although various community programs are available to promote active ageing among seniors who are well, provide befriending services for seniors at risk of isolation and care and support for frail and vulnerable seniors, it is not easy to differentiate between `well' seniors and `at risk' seniors. While privacy-preserving z-wave based sensor-enabled homes have been piloted in 100 homes of seniors living alone and have been successful in the timely detection of at-risk seniors, they have limited scalability due to high costs, reliability …

Nonuniform Timeslicing Of Dynamic Graphs Based On Visual Complexity, Yong Wang, Daniel Archambault, Hammad Haleem, Torsten Moeller, Yanhong Wu, Huamin Qu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Uniform timeslicing of dynamic graphs has been used due to its convenience and uniformity across the time dimension. However, uniform timeslicing does not take the data set into account, which can generate cluttered timeslices with edge bursts and empty timeslices with few interactions. The graph mining filed has explored nonuniform timeslicing methods specifically designed to preserve graph features for mining tasks. In this paper, we propose a nonuni-form timeslicing approach for dynamic graph visualization. Our goal is to create timeslices of equal visual complexity. To this end, we adapt histogram equalization to create timeslices with a similar number of events, …

Visualizing Nutrient Effects On Root Pattern Formation, Robert E. Zdor
Visualizing Nutrient Effects On Root Pattern Formation, Robert E. Zdor
Faculty Publications
This lab gives students hands-on experience with visualizing the root architecture of plants exposed to varying concentrations of the vital nutrient phosphorus. By maintaining Brassica sp. seedlings in the presence of different quantities of phosphate, students can quantify changes in the number of lateral roots as an example of how the environment influences plant pattern formation. Additional variables in the experimental design, such as the use of plant mutants altered in plant regulator action or the presence of plant regulators in the plant growth medium, allow for exploration of how plant growth regulators are involved in root development. The quantitative …
Reconstituting We The People: Frederick Douglass And Jürgen Habermas In Conversation, Paul Gowder
Reconstituting We The People: Frederick Douglass And Jürgen Habermas In Conversation, Paul Gowder
Northwestern University Law Review
This Article draws on Black American intellectual history to offer an approach to fundamental questions of constitutional theory from the standpoint of the politically excluded.
Democratic constitutional theory is vexed by a series of well-known challenges rooted in the inability to justify law without democracy (“the countermajoritarian difficulty”) and the inability to justify any particular composition of the popular demos without law (“the problem of constituent power”). Under conditions of genuine egalitarian political inclusion, a constitutional conception of popular sovereignty derived primarily from the civic republican constitutional patriotism associated with Jürgen Habermas and others can resolve these challenges by providing …
The Constitutionalisation Of Development, Maartje De Visser
The Constitutionalisation Of Development, Maartje De Visser
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
There is a steadily growing interest among academics and policymakers alike in the role of constitutional law in fostering socio-economic development. This attention ties in, at a practical level, with the latest wave of law and development thinking, which conceives of rule-of-law institutions and democracy as existing in a symbiotic relationship with economic growth that together will propel countries to achieve higher levels of foreign investment and overall prosperity. The idea that public law, and the constitution more specifically, has potential in spurring development has for instance found expression across a range of the Sustainable Development Goals formulated under the …

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers
Cerebral aneurysms (CAs) are characterized by a pathological wall structure with internal elastic lamina and media disruption, which leads to focal weakened pouches of the arterial wall. The prevalence of unruptured CAs has been estimated to be 2%-5% in the general population. During the past few decades, the pathophysiological mechanisms behind the formation, growth, and rupture of CAs have been the focus of numerous research studies. In the present review, we have summarized the inflammatory pathways, genetics, and risk factors for the formation, growth, and rupture of CAs. In addition, we have discussed the concepts of geometric indexes, flow patterns, …

Art And The Ecology Of Leisure, Curtis Carter
Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications
Philosophers, scientists, and artists alike are prone to explore important questions concerning ecology as it relates to the impact of human actions for the future of nature and human civilizations. The main focus in this essay is to consider ecological implications of art understood as a form of leisure. Art is of course more than leisure for the artists and other arts professionals, but its personal and societal roles also serve as leisure activities. Both the production of art and its consumption have important ecological implications. Select philosophical (Hegel) and scientific (Escobar) concerning art and nature provide a context for …
The Missing Regulatory State: Monitoring Businesses In An Age Of Surveillance, Rory Van Loo
The Missing Regulatory State: Monitoring Businesses In An Age Of Surveillance, Rory Van Loo
Faculty Scholarship
An irony of the information age is that the companies responsible for the most extensive surveillance of individuals in history—large platforms such as Amazon, Facebook, and Google—have themselves remained unusually shielded from being monitored by government regulators. But the legal literature on state information acquisition is dominated by the privacy problems of excess collection from individuals, not businesses. There has been little sustained attention to the problem of insufficient information collection from businesses. This Article articulates the administrative state’s normative framework for monitoring businesses and shows how that framework is increasingly in tension with privacy concerns. One emerging complication is …

When God Put Daylight On Earth We Had One Voice': Kwakwaka'wakw Perspectives On Sustainability And The Rights Of Nature, Douglas Deur, Kim Recalma-Clutesi, Adam Dick
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this chapter the authors ask: How are the 'Rights of Nature' truly manifested in an indigenous context? We contend that one especially illuminating example can be found in the teaching of the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people of coastal British Columbia. The Kwakwaka'wakw are among the most studied indigenous people in Americas, and are thus a key reference point, providing a rich tradition that is widely known and accessible through accounts of past anthropologists and a handful of living experts.
The authors of this article all speak from deep groundings in Kwakwaka'wakw tradition.
An Investigation Of Veterinary Sales Professionals' Perceptions Of Self-Directed Learning: A Multiple Case Study, Agostino Salvatore Scicchitano
An Investigation Of Veterinary Sales Professionals' Perceptions Of Self-Directed Learning: A Multiple Case Study, Agostino Salvatore Scicchitano
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this multiple case study was to investigate sales professionals’ perceptions of self-directed learning within their current positions. The veterinary industry is a highly knowledge-intensive entity that values professional identity, sense of self, compassion, competence, and the human-animal bond; the veterinary sales professional plays an important role in this industry. However, with sales training waning after the first three years of a sales professional’s employment, self-directed learning becomes an important tool for the veterinary sales professional. Yet, there are no studies that provide an in-depth understanding of the role of self-directed learning in veterinary sales. The following central …
