Chemical Repellents For Reducing Blackbird Damage On Mature Sunflowers: The Importance Of Plant Structure And Avian Behavior In Field Applications, Brandon Amberg Kaiser
Chemical Repellents For Reducing Blackbird Damage On Mature Sunflowers: The Importance Of Plant Structure And Avian Behavior In Field Applications, Brandon Amberg Kaiser
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
Across North America, blackbirds (Icteridae) depredate high-energy crops, such as sunflower (Helianthus annuus), placing an economic burden on producers. Chemically-defended crops, in the form of human-applied repellents, may induce birds to forage elsewhere if a learned aversion can be established. However, repellent deployment must be feasible for producers at the scale of commercial agriculture. Thus, my main objective was to evaluate the efficacy of anthraquinone-based repellents applied to ripening sunflower for reducing blackbird damage. I conducted concentration response (no-choice) and preference tests (two-choice) to evaluate repellent efficacy on captive blackbirds using application strategies practical for agricultural producers. I evaluated field …

Influence Of Neonicotinoid Seed Treatment On Two Co-Occuring Arthropod Pests, Two-Spotted Spider Mite (Tetranychus Urticae) And Western Flower Thrips (Frankliniella Occidentalis), Robert J. Brenner
Entomology
Insecticidal neonicotinoid seed treatments in agriculture is a common insect pest management strategy. Seed treatments have systemic and residual toxicity, which are effective against target insect pests. However, effects on other arthropod pests is less straightforward. We evaluated the effects of a neonicotinoid seed treatment, thiamethoxam, on two soybean pests, herbivorous two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch) and an omnivore and facultative predator of spider mite eggs, western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande). We used greenhouse and laboratory experiments to evaluate thiamethoxam soybean seed treatments on spider mite densities and thrips omnivorous feeding behavior. Our results suggest seed treatment may …
“What Shall Befall Him Or His Children”: The Figure And Anxiety Of The Child In Mary Shelley’S The Last Man, Jasmine Del Banasik
“What Shall Befall Him Or His Children”: The Figure And Anxiety Of The Child In Mary Shelley’S The Last Man, Jasmine Del Banasik
English
The scholarship currently surrounding Mary Shelley’s The Last Man is scarce in comparison to the amount of scholarship with her more well-known text Frankenstein. One of the popular trends of Frankenstein scholarship centers on analyzing anxieties of motherhood in the text. This paper utilizes this scholarship to examine a set of analogous anxieties present in The Last Man, set against an apocalyptic future where there is no next generation. This paper uses a combination of feminist theory, psychoanalysis, and new historicism to examine the anxieties surrounding motherhood and children in The Last Man. I begin by analyzing the figures of …
Bilingual Rabbits, Bilingual Readers: Watership Down As A Case For Animal Texts In Translation, Rachel Ann Grider
Bilingual Rabbits, Bilingual Readers: Watership Down As A Case For Animal Texts In Translation, Rachel Ann Grider
English
Richard Adams’ Watership Down provides readers a unique view of a world that is and isn’t their own, a familiar space from the unfamiliar perspective of an animal. Animal narratives like these are at the core of Animal Studies, a school of thought intent on decentering the Anthropos; yet despite this goal, our explorations of these text still must contend with the fact that they are bound to a language incapable of transmitting their experience and a human-privileged system of value still based within the human frame of reference. By viewing Adams’ novel as a case study for anthropomorphized texts …
The Clear And Present Dangers Of The Clear And Present Danger Test: Schenck And Abrams Revisited, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.
The Clear And Present Dangers Of The Clear And Present Danger Test: Schenck And Abrams Revisited, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.
Articles
From March 3 1919 to November 10 1919 Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes's understanding of the First Amendment underwent a transformation In Schenck Debs and Frohwerk all decided in March 1919 Justice Holmes authored majority opinions that embraced a "bad tendencies" test as the constitutional standard required to regulate "“ or even proscribe entirely "“ political speech that includes a call to unlawful action Although Holmes used the language of a "clear and present danger" these decisions applied a very deferential standard of review and did not require the government to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the probability of political speech …

137 Usability Testing Of A Non-Motor Symptom App In Pd, T Dominey, S Mullin, E Edwards, J Whipps, S Whipps, C Carroll
Peninsula Medical School
BackgroundNon-motor symptoms (NMS) are a significant cause of morbidity in Parkinson’s, with major impact on quality of life. There is an urgent need to empower people with Parkinson’s (PwP) to self-manage NMS, and facilitate timely intervention. A mobile application (NMS Assist) was developed, which enables regular assessment of NMS and provides self-help information in the form of animations.AimTo evaluate key areas for NMS Assist design improvement.MethodPwP and carers were recruited from local Parkinson’s UK groups. NMS Assist user journeys were designed and carried out, filmed with ‘Mr Tappy’, using ‘think aloud’ methodology. Satisfaction was evaluated by the System Usability Scale …
Emergent Regulatory Systems And Their Challenges: The Case Of Combination Medical Products, George Horvath
Emergent Regulatory Systems And Their Challenges: The Case Of Combination Medical Products, George Horvath
Faculty Scholarship
Where regulatory systems overlap, courts and scholars often focus on the undesirable aspects of the overlap—the ways in which systems conflict. One such context involves the regulation of prescription drugs and medical devices by the FDA’s premarket evaluation processes and by state common-law tort and products liability actions. FDA regulation and state common law are often described as separate, conflicting regulatory systems. This Article challenges that description by proposing a model in which FDA premarket evaluation and state common law function as a single regulatory system.
This model brings order to the Supreme Court’s seemingly inconsistent medical products preemption cases, …
