Instructional Message Design: Theory, Research, And Practice, Miguel Ramlatchan, Bethany Emory, Dana Garcia, Meredith Spencer, Travis Saylor, Charles Thull, Frances R. Dukes

Instructional Message Design, Volume 1

Message design is all around us, from the presentations we see in meetings and classes, to the instructions that come with our latest tech gadgets, to multi-million-dollar training simulations. In short, instructional message design is the real-world application of instructional and learning theories to design the tools and technologies used to communicate and effectively convey information. This field of study pulls from many applied sciences including cognitive psychology, industrial design, graphic design, instructional design, and human performance technology to name just a few. In this book we visit several foundational theories that guide our research, look at different real-world applications, …

Chapter 6: Designing And Learning From Modeling And Simulations, Travis Saylor

Instructional Message Design, Volume 1

Instruction message design with simulations is the use of technology to create virtual environments for cost-effective, safe, and authentic learning. This chapter presents a condensed history of simulation learning, an introduction to several approaches to design instructional simulations, and research based best practices that can be used to guide instructional designers. These best practices include the attention to fidelity or realism of the simulation, the removal of extraneous distractions from the design, and the inclusion of sight, sound, and haptic details that the learner will encounter in the real world. Augmented reality, or the blending of virtual and physical environments, …

Chapter 3: Multimedia Learning Theory And Instructional Message Design, Miguel Ramlatchan Oct 2019

Chapter 3: Multimedia Learning Theory And Instructional Message Design, Miguel Ramlatchan

Instructional Message Design, Volume 1

Multimedia learning theory describes how the designers of instructional messages, systems, and learning environments can optimize learning. The principles and heuristics of multimedia learning theory have application in traditional and online environments, with young and adult learners, in K-12, higher education, military, corporate, government, and informal learning environments. This diversity of application is based on the foundational premise that all learners can independently process auditory and visual information, have limited working memory resources, and require cognitive resources to process new information and to learn. This chapter describes the basic tenets of multimedia learning theory, best practices that can improve our …

Chapter 2: Cognitive Load Theory And Instructional Message Design, Bethany Emory

Instructional Message Design, Volume 1

Although theoretical in basis, Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) is pragmatic in nature. Its goal, as it relates to instructional message design, is to present information in a way that enables the learner to process it as efficiently as possible and add it to their brain as learned information. This process relies on the brain for memory, which is separated into two component parts – working memory and long-term memory. Both of these forms of memory are required to connect new information to information that is known – which are essential elements in the learning process. To do this, information that …

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide, and there is currently no effective therapeutic strategy in clinical practice. Gene therapy has great potential for decreasing tumor-induced mortality but has been clinically limited because of the lack of tumor-specific targets and insufficient gene transfer. The study of targeted transport of therapeutic genes in HCC treatment seems to be very important. In this study, we evaluated a gene therapy approach targeting HCC using the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase/ganciclovir (HSVtk/GCV) suicide gene system in HCC cell lines and in an in vivo human HCC xenograft mouse …

The Vitruvian Source Of Marvell’S Tortoise In “Upon Appleton House, To My Lord Fairfax", Dylan Goldblatt Oct 2019

The Vitruvian Source Of Marvell’S Tortoise In “Upon Appleton House, To My Lord Fairfax", Dylan Goldblatt

Faculty Articles

THE TORTOISE IN ANDREW MARVELL’s “Upon Appleton House, To My Lord Fairfax” (1652) is a highly perplexing metaphor that appears twice, framing the poem’s ninety-seven octosyllabic stanzas.1 The initial suggestion that “Beasts [. . .] Birds [. . .] [and] Tortoises” (11–13) inhabit spaces best suited to their anatomies creates a lacuna in the poem, which some scholars have interpreted as a critique of Appleton House.2 Is the Fairfacian dwelling, standing in Brobdingnagian scale against the backdrop of the tortoise shell, unbefitting of its owner, Marvell’s patron, Lord General Thomas Fairfax (1612–1671)? Or does the poet revere the scale and …

Preclinical and clinical data have shown that D-cycloserine (DCS), a partial agonist at the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor complex, augments the retention of fear extinction in animals and the therapeutic learning from exposure therapy in humans. However, studies with nonclinical human samples in de novo fear conditioning paradigms have demonstrated minimal to no benefit of DCS. The aim of this study was to …

Specialty Drugs And The Health Care Cost Crisis, Isaac ("Zack") D. Buck Oct 2019

Specialty Drugs And The Health Care Cost Crisis, Isaac ("Zack") D. Buck

Scholarly Works

Specialty drugs, often dispensed by specialty pharmacies, are among the most expensive drugs on the market. They are significant contributors to the American health care cost problem, but in many ways they escape public and regulatory scrutiny. Surprisingly, medications are designated as specialty drugs by pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), entities that are part of the insurance industry, rather than by the Food and Drug Administration or medical authorities.

Specialty drugs have thus far received little attention in the legal literature. Yet, they raise important legal and regulatory questions. For example, there are no federal government rules (and only a handful …

Negotiating Political Identity In Community-Based Film Festivals: Reflexive Perspectives From Curator-Scholar-Activists, Eve Oishi, Marisa Hicks-Alcaraz

Faculty Papers and Conference Presentations with CGU Graduate Co-authors

This article is a cross-generational exchange of ideas and experiences that explores the intersections of film curating and activism. Its authors set forth accounts of their own experiences as scholars who have worked as film festival curators “on the side” from the 1990s to the present within the context of the new yet rapidly growing field of film festival studies, which provides a useful set of perspectives and methods for understanding how film festivals function and what significance and impact they can have on the multiple stakeholders involved, including but not limited to the filmmakers, festival organizers and staff, and …

Diet‐Induced Obesity Decreases Rate‐Dependent Depression In The Hoffmann’S Reflex In Adult Mice, Gerard Nguyen, Shea Putnam, Mulatwa Haile, Zahra Raza, Martina Bremer, Katherine Wilkinson Oct 2019

Diet‐Induced Obesity Decreases Rate‐Dependent Depression In The Hoffmann’S Reflex In Adult Mice, Gerard Nguyen, Shea Putnam, Mulatwa Haile, Zahra Raza, Martina Bremer, Katherine Wilkinson

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Obesity is associated with balance and motor control deficits. We have recently shown that Group Ia muscle spindle afferents, the sensory arm of the muscle stretch reflex, are less responsive in mice fed a high-fat diet. Here we test the hypothesis that reflex excitability to sensory information from Group Ia muscle spindle afferents is altered in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. We measured the anesthetized Hoffmann’s or H-reflex, the electrical analog of the muscle stretch reflex. Adult mice of both sexes were fed a control diet (CD; 10% kcal from fat) or a high-fat diet (HFD; 60% kcal from …

Honors Program First Year Curriculum Guidelines, David Marshall Oct 2019

Honors Program First Year Curriculum Guidelines, David Marshall

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

In August of 2019, the University Honors Program convened a group of faculty representing three disciplines: English, Philosophy, and Communication Studies. This faculty team produced guidelines for the design of courses in the Honors Program's semester-based first-year curriculum. This document presents those guidelines, which include learning outcomes for each course, recommended types of assignment, and strategies for making connections across courses. The individual course guidelines are prefaced by general guidelines that situate the Honors curriculum within High Impact Practices and that highlight the program's emphasis on metacognition and integrative learning.
