The Influence Of Socio-Demographic Characteristics On Environmental Concern And Ecologically Conscious Consumer Behaviour Among Macedonian Consumers, Barbara Čater, Julijana Serafimova

Economic and Business Review

Western Balkan countries face a decisive moment in the development of their economies, societies and the environment. According to the European Environment Agency, household consumption patterns in these countries have changed rapidly in the recent years and are of key interest due to the fact that unsustainable patterns of consumption are an important cause of environmental problems. The main purpose of this paper is to add to the body of knowledge on environmental consumer profiling, especially in the context of post-transition economies. We present the results of a survey on 323 Macedonian consumers, relating their attitudes and consumption patterns to …

Avian Taxonomic And Functional Diversity In Early Stage Of Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Stands Restored At Agricultural Lands: Variations In Scale Dependency, Myung-Bok Lee, Brian J. Gates, Robert J. Cooper, John P. Carroll Oct 2019

Avian Taxonomic And Functional Diversity In Early Stage Of Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Stands Restored At Agricultural Lands: Variations In Scale Dependency, Myung-Bok Lee, Brian J. Gates, Robert J. Cooper, John P. Carroll

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

In agricultural landscapes, the Longleaf Pine Initiative (LLPI) and the Bobwhite Quail Initiative (BQI) aim to restore longleaf pine forests and early successional habitats, respectively. The early stage of longleaf pine stands and grass and forb vegetation produced by a combination of both restoration programs (LLPI-BQI) may form habitat conditions favorable to early successional bird species and other birds, increasing avian diversity. We investigated how the LLPI and BQI programs affected taxonomic and functional diversity of birds and abundance of early successional birds (grassland and scrub/shrub species), and what environmental characteristics were associated with the diversity and abundance of birds. …

Production Of Zika Virus-Like Particles (Vlps) By Perfusion Processes, Renata G. F. Alvim, Leda R. Castilho

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing IV

Zika virus (ZIKV) emerged as a major international public health concern in 2015 and rapidly spread to more than 80 countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas. ZIKV infection has been shown to cause Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults, as well as severe congenital malformations in fetuses from as much as 42% of infected mothers (Brasil et al., 2016, doi:10.1056/NEJMoa1602412). While no ZIKV vaccine becomes approved for human use, periodic outbreaks will continue to occur in endemic regions and the risk of spreading to non-endemic regions will continue to exist, especially because ZIKV persists in body fluids for very long time …

Experimental Design And Small-Scale Model For High-Performing Perfusion Media And Processes Scalable To 50 L Bioreactors, Andreas Castan, Patrick M Ayrhofer, Renate Kunert Oct 2019

Experimental Design And Small-Scale Model For High-Performing Perfusion Media And Processes Scalable To 50 L Bioreactors, Andreas Castan, Patrick M Ayrhofer, Renate Kunert

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing IV

Cell culture perfusion processes are considered optimal for a truly integrated continuous biomanufacturing pipeline. The nutrient-rich but balanced media should be designed to support very low cell-specific perfusion rates (CSPR) that minimize media consumption but maximize viable cell days and productivities. Optimized processes at low CSPR drastically reduce equipment costs, lab space, and product dilution. Finally, operating at very low CSPR enables running mammalian cell bioprocesses as true chemostat cultures in the future. We demonstrate a general workflow to develop high-performing perfusion media using small-scale models and transferred the process to 50 L scale at CSPR of 20 pL/c/d.

A Belmont Report For Animals?, Hope Ferdowsian, L. Syd M. Johnson, Jane Johnson, Andrew Fenton, Adam Shriver, John Gluck

Professional Science Research Ethics Collection

Human and animal research both operate within established standards. In the United States, criticism of the human research environment and recorded abuses of human research subjects served as the impetus for the establishment of the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research, and the resulting Belmont Report. The Belmont Report established key ethical principles to which human research should adhere: respect for autonomy, obligations to beneficence and justice, and special protections for vulnerable individuals and populations. While current guidelines appropriately aim to protect the individual interests of human participants in research, no similar, comprehensive, …

The Element-Based Method Of Civilization Study, Andrew Targowski Oct 2019

The Element-Based Method Of Civilization Study, Andrew Targowski

Comparative Civilizations Review

The purpose: to define the element-based method of studying civilization with a meaningful contribution to contemporary life. The methodology: the transdisciplinary, big-picture view of human development on Earth based on graphic modeling of civilizational elements, their relations, and dynamics. The findings: about 200+ civilizational elements have been recognized within about 500 possible elements of society, culture, and infrastructure. Practical implications: today, civilization infrastructure challenges society and culture, which can lead to the fall of the Homo sapiens race and the rise of a human-machine race. Moreover, one of the options will be the rise of designer babies and the dichotomy …

The Twisted Mirror Of Perception: Social Science In Service Of Political/Ideological Expediency -- The Case Of Russian Eurasianism, Dimtry Shlapentokh

Comparative Civilizations Review

There are many reasons why certain creeds or phenomena from foreign countries remain unknown in the West. They could be almost totally ignored for decades before becoming interesting to the scholarly community and general public until, eventually, works about them become published by the leading presses.

Reproduction And Dispersal Of Biological Soil Crust Organisms, Steven D. Warren, Larry L. St. Clair, Lloyd R. Stark, Louise A. Lewis, Nuttapon Pombubpa, Tania Kurbessoian, Jason E. Stajich, Zachary T. Aanderud

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Biological soil crusts (BSCs) consist of a diverse and highly integrated community of organisms that effectively colonize and collectively stabilize soil surfaces. BSCs vary in terms of soil chemistry and texture as well as the environmental parameters that combine to support unique combinations of organisms—including cyanobacteria dominated, lichen-dominated, and bryophyte-dominated crusts. The list of organismal groups that make up BSC communities in various and unique combinations include—free living, lichenized, and mycorrhizal fungi, chemoheterotrophic bacteria, cyanobacteria, diazotrophic bacteria and archaea, eukaryotic algae, and bryophytes. The various BSC organismal groups demonstrate several common characteristics including—desiccation and extreme temperature tolerance, production of various …

Get In The Ring: Professional Wrestling And Heavy Metal Music In Parallel, Cenate Pruitt

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

The sociological study of commonalities between professional wrestling and heavy metal music seems intuitive. Both are considered loud, flashy, and aggressively macho. Both have seen an explosion of critical academic analysis in the last decade. Both are perfect embodiments of what Barthes (1956) called “the spectacle of excess”. And yet, no academic research has explicitly brought the two together until now. This article serves as a beachhead, to first establish commonalities between the two forms, and then to explore the specific ways in which heavy metal culture has both infiltrated and been co-opted by mainstream American professional wrestling in the …

Whole-brain volumetric microscopy techniques such as serial two-photon tomography (STPT) can provide detailed information on the roles of neuroinflammation and neuroplasticity throughout the whole brain post-stroke. STPT automatically generates high-resolution images of coronal sections of the entire mouse brain that can be readily visualized in three dimensions. We developed a pipeline for whole brain image analysis that includes supervised machine learning (pixel-wise random forest models via the “ilastik” software package) followed by registration to a standardized 3-D atlas of the adult mouse brain (Common Coordinate Framework v3.0; Allen Institute for Brain Science). These procedures allow the detection of cellular fluorescent …

Using Cultural Mindsets To Reduce Cross‐National Auditor Judgment Differences, Aaron Saiewitz, Elaine Ying Wang Oct 2019

Using Cultural Mindsets To Reduce Cross‐National Auditor Judgment Differences, Aaron Saiewitz, Elaine Ying Wang

Department of Accounting Faculty Research

In a globalized audit environment, regulators and researchers have expressed concerns about inconsistent audit quality across nations, with a particular emphasis on Chinese audit quality. Prior research suggests Chinese audit quality may be lower than U.S. audit quality due to a weaker institutional environment (e.g., lower litigation and inspection risk) or cultural value differences (e.g., greater deference to authority). In this study, we propose that lower Chinese audit quality could also be due to Chinese auditors' different cognitive processing styles (i.e., cultural mindsets). We find U.S. auditors are more likely to engage in an analytic mindset approach, focusing on a …

Phoenicians: The Quickening Of Western Civilization, John C. Scott Oct 2019

Phoenicians: The Quickening Of Western Civilization, John C. Scott

Comparative Civilizations Review

A relatively recent field of inquiry, Phoenician and Punic studies covers much the same time and geographical areas as Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic Greek and Roman history.1 Adjacent fields include economic, business, writing, agricultural, nautical, and biblical history. Scholarship today is moving beyond the Hellenocentric and Romanocentric viewpoints and the record of Phoenician history is increasingly seen as critical for understanding European origins.
