Reterminalization Phenomenon In The Process Of Formation Of Internet Terminology, Dilfuzakhon Saidkodirova Senior Teacher, Phd Department Of Intensive Teaching Of Second Language

Philology Matters

The article analyses features of Internet terms in formation of borrowings. Analysis of the structure of Internet terminology in Uzbek shows that majority of Internet terms are borrowed from English and some of them are borrowed from Russian. This is the main point of researching problems of borrowings, structural features of Internet terms in the Uzbek language. There are some-terms, semi terms which were borrowed by model words (tracing and semi tracing) in the Uzbek language. Moreover we can see that borrowed Internet terms from English and Russian are formed with the help of prefixes, which are quite often used …

Nanomaterials For Biosensing Lipopolysaccharide, Palak Sondhi, Helal Maruf, Keith Stine

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are endotoxins, hazardous and toxic inflammatory stimulators released from the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, and are the major cause of septic shock giving rise to millions of fatal illnesses worldwide. There is an urgent need to identify and detect these molecules selectively and rapidly. Pathogen detection has been done by traditional as well as biosensor-based methods. Nanomaterial based biosensors can assist in achieving these goals and have tremendous potential. The biosensing techniques developed are low-cost, easy to operate, and give a fast response. Due to extremely small size, large surface area, and scope for surface modification, nanomaterials …

Orange Trumps Red And Green This Christmas, Steve Eskew

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Hurrah and humbug. Here's to our annual ambivalence. Time to decorate, shop 'til ya drop and develop a mild drinking habit to cope. As a staunch offline shopper, allow me to emphasize that I do indeed love the Internet but I hate the hassle of being hacked. However, I absolutely adore aIl of you online shoppers. Your method of shopping at home helps free up space for me at the malls. I'm no misanthrope, not even a curmudgeon, but I'm also no Mr. Congeniality among fellow shoppers.

Stochastic Orthogonalization And Its Application To Machine Learning, Yu Hong Dec 2019

Stochastic Orthogonalization And Its Application To Machine Learning, Yu Hong

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Orthogonal transformations have driven many great achievements in signal processing. They simplify computation and stabilize convergence during parameter training. Researchers have introduced orthogonality to machine learning recently and have obtained some encouraging results. In this thesis, three new orthogonal constraint algorithms based on a stochastic version of an SVD-based cost are proposed, which are suited to training large-scale matrices in convolutional neural networks. We have observed better performance in comparison with other orthogonal algorithms for convolutional neural networks.

Examining Three Approaches To Supporting English Learners By Leveraging Technology, Jillian Conry Dec 2019

Examining Three Approaches To Supporting English Learners By Leveraging Technology, Jillian Conry

Teaching and Learning Theses and Dissertations

This three-article dissertation examines three distinct approaches to supporting English learners (ELs) by leveraging technology. Framed by the third generation of cultural-historical activity theory (Engeström, 1987; 2001), this research illuminates ways different stakeholder groups within varying activity systems support ELs, by examining technology as 1) an instructional tool in the classroom, 2) a mechanism for family engagement, and 3) a means for preparing teachers to serve ELs. Types of technologies implemented in these studies include various online multimodal tools (e.g., VoiceThread, Zaption), learning management systems (e.g., EdModo, Canvas), social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter), and mixed-reality simulation (MRS; e.g., Mursion). …

Sample Size Considerations For Clustered And Correlated Outcomes In Clinical Research, Xiaohan Xu Dec 2019

Sample Size Considerations For Clustered And Correlated Outcomes In Clinical Research, Xiaohan Xu

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we investigate sample size calculations for three different study designs: stratified cluster randomization trials (CRTs), paired experimental designs and paired cluster experimental designs.

Stratified CRTs have been frequently employed in clinical and healthcare research. Comparing with simple randomized CRTs, stratified CRTs reduce the imbalance of baseline prognostic factors among different intervention groups. Clusters are often naturally formed with random sizes in CRTs. With varying cluster size, commonly used ad hoc approaches ignore the variability in cluster size, which may underestimate (overestimate) the required number of clusters for each group per stratum and lead to underpowered (overpowered) clinical …

Ethical Consistency And Experience: An Attempt To Influence Researcher Attitudes Toward Questionable Research Practices Through Reading Prompts, Samuel V. Bruton, Mitch Brown, Donald F. Sacco Dec 2019

Ethical Consistency And Experience: An Attempt To Influence Researcher Attitudes Toward Questionable Research Practices Through Reading Prompts, Samuel V. Bruton, Mitch Brown, Donald F. Sacco

Faculty Publications

Over the past couple of decades, the apparent widespread occurrence of Questionable Research Practices (QRPs) in scientific research has been widely discussed in the research ethics literature as a source of concern. Various ways of reducing their use have been proposed and implemented, ranging from improved training and incentives for adopting best practices to systematic reforms. This article reports on the results of two studies that investigated the efficacy of simple, psychological interventions aimed at changing researcher attitudes toward QRPs. While the interventions did not significantly modify researchers’ reactions to QRPs, they showed differential efficacy depending on scientists’ experience, suggesting …

Design And Biological Evaluation Of Colchicine-Cd44-Targeted Peptide Conjugate In An In Vitro Model Of Crystal Induced Inflammation, Khalid A. Zoghebi, Emira Bousoik, Keykavous Parang, Khaled A. Elsaid

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis due to the joint deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals. Phagocytosis of MSU crystals by tissue macrophages results in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and production of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Colchicine use in gout is limited by severe toxicity. CD44 is a transmembrane glycoprotein that is highly expressed in tissue macrophages and may be involved in gout pathogenesis. The P6 peptide is a 20-amino acid residue peptide that binds to CD44. We hypothesized that the conjugation of colchicine to the P6 peptide would reduce its off-target cytotoxicity while preserving its anti-inflammatory effect. …

Kent Philpott And The Charismatic Roots Of Contemporary Conversion Therapy, Chris Babits Dec 2019

Kent Philpott And The Charismatic Roots Of Contemporary Conversion Therapy, Chris Babits

The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community

Second-wave feminism and the sexual revolution changed Americans’ relationship with not only sex and gender but also religion. In the late 1960s, Kent Philpott, a seminary student in San Francisco, experienced these changes first-hand. After feeling a calling to minister in Haight-Ashbury, Philpott increasingly devoted himself to one cause—remedying homosexual men and women. Philpott’s story, however, remains an underreported part of the history of contemporary conversion therapy. More specifically, Philpott’s charismatic beliefs have been lost in the expansive scholarship on sexual reorientation change therapies. The erasure of charismatic beliefs and healing practices from contemporary conversion therapy’s history only underscores the …

Agronomic Or Contentious Land Change? A Longitudinal Analysis From The Eastern Brazilian Amazon, Stephen Aldrich, Cynthia S. Simmons, Eugenio Arima, Robert T. Walker, Fernando Michelotti, Edna Castro Dec 2019

Agronomic Or Contentious Land Change? A Longitudinal Analysis From The Eastern Brazilian Amazon, Stephen Aldrich, Cynthia S. Simmons, Eugenio Arima, Robert T. Walker, Fernando Michelotti, Edna Castro

Department of Earth and Environmental Systems

Since 1984, nearly 1,000 people have been killed in the Brazilian Amazon due to land conflicts stemming from unequal distribution of land, land tenure insecurity, and lawlessness. During this same period, the region experienced almost complete deforestation (< 8% forest cover by 2010). Land conflict exacts a human toll, but it also affects agents’ decisions about land use, the subject of this article. Using a property-level panel dataset covering the period of redemocratization in Brazil (1984) until the privatization of long-term leases in the eastern Amazon (2010), we show that deforestation is affected by land conflict, particularly in cases of expropriation of property for agrarian reform settlement formation. Deforestation on these settlements is much greater when soils are poor for agriculture and when the land has been the object of past conflict. Deforestation and conflict are episodic, and both agronomic drivers and contentious drivers of land change are active in the region. Ultimately, the outcome of these processes of contentious and agronomic land change is substantial deforestation, regardless of who was in possession and control of the land.

Contributions To Variable Selection In Complexly Sampled Case-Control Models, Epidemiology Of 72-Hour Emergency Department Readmission, And Out-Of-Site Migration Rate Estimation Using Pseudo-Tagged Longitudinal Data, Kyle Anderson

Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

This work consists of three different projects.

In the first project, I analyze complexly sampled survey data, representative of the US population, to determine what lifestyle behaviors and notions held by participants are most significant with having had a cancer diagnosis. A logistic regression model was built using automatic variable selection with forward selection with backwards elimination. Our results show that sunscreen usage, level of agreeing with the statement "behaviors can affect high blood pressure", age, intent to eat more or less fruit, average daily hours spent watching tv or playing video games, and level of agreeing with the statement …

Habermas And The Question Of Bioethics, Hille Haker Dec 2019

Habermas And The Question Of Bioethics, Hille Haker

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In The Future of Human Nature, Jürgen Habermas raises the question of whether the embryonic genetic diagnosis and genetic modification threatens the foundations of the species ethics that underlies current understandings of morality. While morality, in the normative sense, is based on moral interactions enabling communicative action, justification, and reciprocal respect, the reification involved in the new technologies may preclude individuals to uphold a sense of the undisposability (Unverfügbarkeit) of human life and the inviolability (Unantastbarkeit) of human beings that is necessary for their own identity as well as for reciprocal relations. Engaging with liberal …

Community ecology theory suggests that an individual's phenotype is determined by the phenotypes of its coexisting members to the extent at which this process can shape community evolution. Here, we develop a mapping theory to identify interaction quantitative trait loci (QTL) governing inter-individual dependence. We mathematically formulate the decision-making strategy of interacting individuals. We integrate these mathematical descriptors into a statistical procedure, enabling the joint characterization of how QTL drive the strengths of ecological interactions and how the genetic architecture of QTL is driven by ecological networks. In three fish full-sib mapping experiments, we identify a set of genome-wide QTL …

Food Choice Reform: Shifting American Culture Toward Sustainable Diets, Colleen Mccarthy

Student Theses 2015-Present

Excessive meat consumption is associated with a wide range of environmental problems. Reducing meat consumption has been recognized as one of the most efficient ways to decrease one’s ecological footprint, yet meat consumption is still on the rise and many are not willing to make changes to their diets to include less meat. This paper discusses the problem of America’s continued and rising overconsumption of meat, with the end goal of developing and concluding which strategies are most effective at shifting American culture toward sustainable diets. Chapter 1 gives an overview of why a reduction in meat consumption is necessary …

Voices On The Horizon: A Theory Of Ludic Rhetoric, Jeff Lohr Dec 2019

Voices On The Horizon: A Theory Of Ludic Rhetoric, Jeff Lohr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Voices on the horizon: A theory of ludic rhetoric begins with the assumption that rhetoric and play offer hope for cooperation and community in a fragmented and divided world. Rhetoric and play share an intellectual trajectory in the history of ideas. The earliest use of the terms rhetor and rhetoric in the Western tradition encouraged playful cooperation. The move toward reason and science during the Enlightenment relegated rhetoric to mere techniques for persuasion and silenced alternative avenues for seeking truth. Reclaiming traditional rhetoric as a meeting place for potential negotiation and cooperation encourages constructive civic discourse. The conclusion of this …

C-Metalated Nitriles: Diastereoselective Alkylations And Arylations, Robert John Mycka Dec 2019

C-Metalated Nitriles: Diastereoselective Alkylations And Arylations, Robert John Mycka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Development of an sp3 hybridized halogen-magnesium exchange route to Grignard reagents, chelation-controlled asymmetric induction of γ- and δ-hydroxynitriles as well as a diastereoselective arylation procedure for C-zincated nitriles have been explored. Sequential addition of i-PrMgCl and n-BuLi to 3- and 4-carbon iodoalcohols triggers a facile halogen-metal exchange to generate cyclic magnesium alkoxides capable of intercepting electrophiles to produce a diverse range of substituted alcohols. This work advances progress toward the synthesis of highly desirable chiral Grignard reagents.

Double deprotonation of γ- and δ-acyclic hydroxynitriles with i-PrMgCl effects highly diastereoselective alkylations via a singly-chelated magnesiated nitriles. …

A Study Of Chloride Levels In Pine Creek, Allegheny County, Pa, Selina Prettner Dec 2019

A Study Of Chloride Levels In Pine Creek, Allegheny County, Pa, Selina Prettner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pine Creek is a 22.8-mile long tributary to the Allegheny River draining over 67 square miles of northern Allegheny County, PA. The main stem runs along Route 8 and receives extensive runoff from road salt from deicing. A site near Etna, PA sampled biweekly in 2013 consistently showed elevated conductivity that correlated with increased chloride levels. Winter road deicing runoff produced acute chloride concentrations up to 678 mg/L. Chloride fluctuated in the summer and autumn months but did not exceed the USEPA Secondary Drinking Water Standard (250 mg/L) or the aquatic life criterion for chronic concentrations (230 mg/L). Sampling throughout …

A Case Study Of An Online Teacher Study Group As A Digital Professional Development Tool, Jessica Martin Dec 2019

A Case Study Of An Online Teacher Study Group As A Digital Professional Development Tool, Jessica Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, there appears to have been a shift in professional development approaches for teachers from short-term workshops to teacher communities of professional practice, which extend over a while and focus on the expert knowledge teachers need to use in their setting (Goya, 2014). A supportive approach to teacher learning communities is a teacher study group. An even more promising and flexible approach to teacher learning communities in a global aspect is an online teacher study group. An online teacher study group provided a universal and flexible venue to engage in collaborative discussion between general education and special education …

The Effect Of Invasive Plants On Soil Microbial Activity In A Ny Temperate Forest, Victoria Dawn Hull Dec 2019

The Effect Of Invasive Plants On Soil Microbial Activity In A Ny Temperate Forest, Victoria Dawn Hull

Theses - ALL

Invasive woody plants are often strong competitors that can have large effects on ecosystem function. While there is evidence that Northeastern invasive species can increase nitrogen cycling in monocultures, little is known about how invasive plants alter biogeochemistry in the field. I hypothesized that the high-quality leaf and root litter of invaders would enhance the quality of soil organic matter, leading to greater belowground microbial activity and faster rates of nitrogen mineralization. In the summer of 2017, I conducted a field survey of invasive and native understory shrubs to see how invasive woody plants influence microbial activity in central New …

Characterization Of Phenolic Acids For Incorporation Into Shape Memory Polymer Foams, Jingyi Liu Dec 2019

Characterization Of Phenolic Acids For Incorporation Into Shape Memory Polymer Foams, Jingyi Liu

Theses - ALL

Shape memory polymer (SMP) foams provide a promising new option for hemorrhage control on the battlefield; however, they lack a mechanism to control wound infections that can delay healing processes. Adding phenolic acids (PAs) into SMP foams provides a natural, non-drug option for incorporations of antioxidant and antimicrobial functionalities that may promote healing. However, PAs lack a systemic characterization of their structure/property relationships, and their chemical incorporation into SMP foams may alter their efficacy. In this work, a library of PAs was screened in terms of antioxidant and antimicrobial properties to provide a full understanding of how their structure affects …

Variation In Herbivore Effects On Grassland Primary Production: A Test Of Three Models, Jacob Penner Dec 2019

Variation In Herbivore Effects On Grassland Primary Production: A Test Of Three Models, Jacob Penner

Theses - ALL

Grazing animals influence a wide range of plant and soil processes in the world’s grasslands. Ecologists have long understood that grazing can stimulate aboveground net primary production (ANPP), although this phenomenon has not been broadly generalizable across grasslands and grazing regimes. The mechanisms underlying grazer stimulation of ANPP are therefore of interest to a wide variety of stakeholders from ecologists to land managers. Three data-supported hypotheses offer differing explanations for the ways in which grazing interacts with resource availability to drive ANPP: the compensatory continuum hypothesis (CCH) implicates background resource availability, the limiting resource model (LRM) considers the direct effects …

Fighting Food Insecurity For Nyc Children And Youth: Urban Agriculture And Food Justice, Devin C. O'Mara

Student Theses 2015-Present

The positive benefits of urban agriculture go beyond just providing fresh and healthy food to metropolitan areas. As the practice of urban farming has become increasingly more popular over the last decade or so, it has proven to develop community relations and aide with metropolitan and global issues such as poverty. Children and teens especially benefit from urban agriculture, specifically those that comes from underprivileged homes that may not have the resources to obtain fresh food every day. A shocking number of kids can go hungry every day due to lack of available food. Many children that live in metropolitan …
