Impact Of The Human Footprint On Anthropogenic Mortality Of North American Reptiles, Jacob E. Hill, Travis L. Devault, Jerrold L. Belant
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Human activities frequently result in reptile mortality, but how direct anthropogenic mortality compares to natural morality has not been thoroughly investigated. There has also been a limited examination of how anthropogenic reptile mortality changes as a function of the human footprint. We conducted a synthesis of causespecific North American reptile mortality studies based on telemetry, documenting 550 mortalities of known cause among 2461 monitored individuals in 57 studies. Overall 78% of mortality was the result of direct natural causes, whereas 22% was directly caused by humans. The single largest source of mortality was predation, accounting for 62% of mortality overall. …

Phytoplankton Community And Algal Toxicity At A Recurring Bloom In Sullivan Bay, Kabetogama Lake, Minnesota, Usa, Victoria G. Christensen, Ryan P. Maki, Erin A. Stelzer, Jack E. Norlan, Eakalak Khan
Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
Kabetogama Lake in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota, USA suffers from recurring late summer algal blooms that often contain toxin-producing cyanobacteria. Previous research identified the toxin microcystin in blooms, but we wanted to better understand how the algal and cyanobacterial community changed throughout an open water season and how changes in community structure were related to toxin production. Therefore, we sampled one recurring bloom location throughout the entire open water season. The uniqueness of this study is the absence of urban and agricultural nutrient sources, the remote location, and the collection of samples before any visible blooms were present. Through quantitative …

Effect Of Biosurfactant And Biochar On Ecosystem Functions And Oil Remediation In Crude Oil Contaminated Wetland Soils, Zhuo Wei
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Decontamination of oil spill from coastal wetland soils requires a delicate approach. Remediation strategies using biochar, biosurfactant, and nutrient additions have been proposed. However, there is little information on application of these with combination for treatment of crude oil-contaminated wetland soil. Therefore, incubation studies were carried out to investigate the impact of biochar and rhamnolipid (RL) biosurfactant along with nitrogen (N) application on petroleum hydrocarbon degradation in a Louisiana coastal saline marsh and their impacts on greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. Additionally, the toxicity of crude oil as well as remediation materials on coastal wetland ecosystem were assessed at three levels: …
Evaluation Of Metsulfuron-Methyl For Giant Salvinia (Salvinia Molesta) Control And Non-Target Species Sensitivity, William Prevost
Evaluation Of Metsulfuron-Methyl For Giant Salvinia (Salvinia Molesta) Control And Non-Target Species Sensitivity, William Prevost
LSU Master's Theses
The invasive aquatic fern giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta D.S. Mitchell) has been invading waterbodies across Louisiana and Texas since 1998. Recently, the non-aquatic herbicide metsulfuron-methyl was found to be highly efficacious against giant salvinia, but limited information is available on application techniques, use rates and concentrations, as well as its impact on non-target species. Therefore, a series of mesocosm experiments were conducted to further evaluate foliar and subsurface applications of metsulfuron against giant salvinia, as well as foliar applications of metsulfuron in combination with aquatic herbicides commonly used for giant salvinia control. When applied to the foliage of giant …
Assessment Of Off-Bottom Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Aquaculture Techniques On Biofouling In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Ellis Chapman
Assessment Of Off-Bottom Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Aquaculture Techniques On Biofouling In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Ellis Chapman
LSU Master's Theses
Although off-bottom oyster aquaculture is a rising industry in the northern Gulf of Mexico, it is susceptible to biofouling, the accumulation of organisms on industry surfaces. Biofouling creates problems for commercial growers by increasing the costs of labor associated with biofouling management. The most used off-bottom production techniques involve aerial exposure. OysterGro™ 6-slot off-bottom oyster cages were used in this project to test aerial exposure frequency, antifouling coatings and bag position on mortality, growth rates, shell ratios and condition indices on four sites in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Aerial exposure of floating cages was performed in increments of once …
Thermal-Kinect Fusion Scanning System For Bodyshape Inpainting And Estimation Under Clothing, Sirazum Munira Tisha
Thermal-Kinect Fusion Scanning System For Bodyshape Inpainting And Estimation Under Clothing, Sirazum Munira Tisha
LSU Master's Theses
In today's interactive world 3D body scanning is necessary in the field of making virtual avatar, apparel industry, physical health assessment and so on. 3D scanners that are used in this process are very costly and also requires subject to be nearly naked or wear a special tight fitting cloths. A cost effective 3D body scanning system which can estimate body parameters under clothing will be the best solution in this regard. In our experiment we build such a body scanning system by fusing Kinect depth sensor and a Thermal camera. Kinect can sense the depth of the subject and …
Immune Gene Diversity And Populations Structure Of Reticulated Flatwoods Salamander (Ambystoma Bishopi), Steven Tyler Williams
Immune Gene Diversity And Populations Structure Of Reticulated Flatwoods Salamander (Ambystoma Bishopi), Steven Tyler Williams
LSU Master's Theses
Reticulated flatwoods salamander (Ambystoma bishopi) populations began decreasing dramatically in the late 1900s. Contemporary populations are small, isolated, and may be susceptible to inbreeding and reduced adaptive potential because of low genetic variation. Genetic variation at immune genes is especially important as it influences disease susceptibility and adaptation to emerging infectious pathogens, a central conservation concern for declining amphibians. Connectivity between isolated populations is also vital to maintain genetic diversity and avoid inbreeding. I collected tissue samples from across the extant range of this salamander to examine genetic variation and population structure in: immune genes broadly (immunome), the …

Investigating The Mechanisms Of Hydrolysis And Amyloidosis Through Computational Approaches, Gaurav Sharma
Investigating The Mechanisms Of Hydrolysis And Amyloidosis Through Computational Approaches, Gaurav Sharma
Open Access Dissertations
Hydrolysis reaction is involved in a wide range of biological and industrial applications. In our body, phosphoester and peptide hydrolysis are accomplished using specialized enzymes known as phosphoesterases and proteases. These enzymes constitute about 60% of all the enzymes that are used today in textile, food, leather, paper, and ethanol production industries. In this thesis, I have focused on the following three projects; (1) exploring the interactions of various biomolecules (such as enzymes, antimicrobial peptides, DNA, and amyloid β fibrils) with their binding molecules; (2) understanding the mechanism of phosphoester and peptide hydrolysis by glycerophosphodiesterase (GpdQ) and Streptomyces griseus aminopeptidase (SgAP), …

Colistin is a “last resort” antibiotic for treatment of infections caused by some multidrug resistant Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. Resistance to colistin varies between bacterial species. Some Gram-negative bacteria such as Burkholderia spp. are intrinsically resistant to very high levels of colistin with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) often above 0.5 mg/ml. We have previously shown DedA family proteins YqjA and YghB are conserved membrane transporters required for alkaline tolerance and resistance to several classes of dyes and antibiotics in Escherichia coli. Here, we show that a DedA family …

Gene Expression Of Endangered Coral (Orbicella Spp.) In Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary After Hurricane Harvey, Rachel M. Wright, Adrienne M.S. Correa, Lucinda A. Quigley, Lory Z. Santiago-Vázquez, Kathryn E.F. Shamberger, Sarah W. Davies
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
About 190 km south of the Texas–Louisiana border, the East and West Flower Garden Banks (FGB) have maintained > 50% coral cover with infrequent and minor incidents of disease or bleaching since monitoring began in the 1970s. However, a mortality event, affecting 5.6 ha (2.6% of the area) of the East FGB, occurred in late July 2016 and coincided with storm-generated freshwater runoff extending offshore and over the reef system. To capture the immediate effects of storm-driven freshwater runoff on coral and symbiont physiology, we leveraged the heavy rainfall associated with Hurricane Harvey in late August 2017 by sampling FGB corals …

Plasmonic Stimulation Of Electrically Excitable Biological Cells, Parveen Bazard, Robert Dana Frisina, Joseph Paul Walton, Venkat Rama Bhethanabotla
USF Patents
A novel method to stimulate electrically active biological cells using visible wavelength light and metallic nanoparticles possessing plasmonic properties is presented herein. Using this technology, prosthetic devices such as cochlear and retinal implants and cardiac pacemakers can be developed to have superior properties as compared to the currently utilized electrical stimulation designs. These properties include improved spatial resolution; less or non-invasive devices; and higher fidelity of transduction. An additional advantage of using visible light wavelengths is the avoidance of unwanted heating of surrounding tissue that occurs with infrared stimulation.

Weaponizing Radioactive Medical Waste - The Looming Threat, Shreekumar Menon, Vagish Kumar L.S.
Weaponizing Radioactive Medical Waste - The Looming Threat, Shreekumar Menon, Vagish Kumar L.S.
International Journal of Nuclear Security
Across the globe, use of radioactive substances for medical treatment, by hospitals has resulted in generation of toxic wastes on a large scale. Disposal of these wastes are being entrusted to waste disposal vendors. Environmental concerns, pressures, restrictions and high labor costs, compel these vendors to dump these wastes in third world countries, where enforcement and awareness are substantially low. Unrestricted access to these waste dumps is an open invitation to terror organizations to extract toxic substances and fabricate crude dirty bombs to threaten public safety, and cause low-level contamination of sensitive installations. It is therefore imperative to create an …

Predation Of The Mexican Deer Mouse (Peromyscus Mexicanus) By Long-Tailed Weasel (Mustela Frenata) In Laguna Bélgica Educational Park, Ocozocoautla De Espinosa, Chiapas, O. Iván Martínez Vaca-León, Elizabeth Arellano, Xavier López-Medellín
Western North American Naturalist
The long-tailed weasel (Mustela frenata) is a generalist predator that feeds mainly on rodents and rabbits. However, predation on Peromyscus rodents has been reported mostly at the genus level and records are scarce. In April 2018, we made a field trip to Laguna Bélgica Educational Park, Chiapas, to capture, handle, and study mammalian wildlife species. We set 15 Sherman traps 5 m apart on a 70-m linear transect for one night. One male M. frenata was captured along with a dead Mexican deer mouse (Peromyscus mexicanus) in the same trap. The rodent had incision marks on …

Using Poultry Litter Ash As A Fertilizer Source For Bermudagrass (Cynodon Dactylon) Establishment And Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Plantation, Crystal L. Vance
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Lower solubility of P in poultry litter ash (PLA) than conventional phosphorus (P) fertilizers such as triple superphosphate (TSP) may reduce P losses in drainage and runoff; however, lower P solubility may reduce its efficacy as a P source. A laboratory experiment was conducted to examine the effect of acidity on P release and the effect of different combustion temperatures on P solubility as a prerequisite to the following studies. The first research objective was to determine the effect of soil pH on the efficiency of PLA relative to TSP for establishment of common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) and …

Feet, Lines, Weather, Labyrinth: The Haptic Engagement As A Suggestion For An Ecological Aesthetics, Nicola Perullo
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
In this paper I present a philosophical approach stemming from the general framework of ecological aesthetics, specifically defined here as a perceptual attitude that entails intimacy, engagement, participation, and care. In order to develop this approach, I lean on some authors that I find sympathetic to my view; particularly important are John Dewey, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Arnold Berleant and Tim Ingold. Following Ingold, I propose a revaluation of what he calls “feet” to highlight the active and mobile nature of perception and a consideration for an ontology of living beings as a fluid meshwork composed by lines. I then propose to …
