Social Activism Through Shareholder Activism, Lisa M. Fairfax Nov 2019

Social Activism Through Shareholder Activism, Lisa M. Fairfax

Washington and Lee Law Review

This article is based on the author's keynote address at the 2018-2019 Lara D. Gass Annual Symposium: Civil Rights and Shareholder Activism at Washington and Lee University School of Law, February 15, 2019.

In 1952, the SEC altered the shareholder proposal rule to exclude proposals made “primarily for the purpose of promoting general economic, political, racial, religious, social or similar causes.” The SEC did not reference civil rights activist James Peck or otherwise acknowledge that its actions were prompted by Peck’s 1951 shareholder proposal to Greyhound for desegregating seating. Instead, the SEC indicated that its change simply reflected a codification …

Reader Response Theory: Students’ Encounter And Challenges With E- Literature, Ma. Junithesmer D. Rosales, John Paolo Sarce

English Faculty Publications

This paper investigated the overall experience of learners with e-literature (e-lit). E-lit as a new form of economy in the field of literature and humanities prompted authors and scholars to create newborn sites of learning — videograph fiction, kinetic poetry, text tula (hyperpoem), and hyperfiction. Thus, the digitization of resource materials in literature led the researchers to investigate the outer circle of some of these new born sites by focusing on the following: readers and their experiences on understanding and learning through e-lit; textual which is concerned with performance and complexities of using this new form of literature; and cultural …

Physical Activity And Perceived Fatigue In Men Receiving External Beam Radiation Therapy For Prostate Cancer, Timothy C. F. Fuss, Leorey N. Saligan

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Fatigue is reported to be the most distressing side effect of radiation therapy (RT), negatively effecting physical function and quality of life. This study explores the relationship of fatigue with free living activity measured through accelerometry which has been largely unexplored in men receiving radiation therapy for prostate cancer.

Altered Proteasome Expression And Nuclear Factor (Erythroid-Derived 2)-Like Signaling In Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis, Kara Leasure Shanley Nov 2019

Altered Proteasome Expression And Nuclear Factor (Erythroid-Derived 2)-Like Signaling In Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis, Kara Leasure Shanley

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological disorder characterized by the interactions between heightened inflammation, oxidative stress and neurodegeneration. We and others have previously demonstrated that proteasome dysfunction and its consequences are also important factors in the pathology of both MS and its rodent model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). While proteasome subunit alterations in EAE have been observed, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. The first goal of this dissertation was to characterize the mechanisms that regulate proteasome expression and composition in neural cells in EAE and in vitro.

Immunohistochemical analysis of the EAE spinal cord shows changes in …

Epidemiological Analysis Of Malaria Decrease In El Salvador From 1955 Until 2017, Tatiana I. Gardellini Guevara Nov 2019

Epidemiological Analysis Of Malaria Decrease In El Salvador From 1955 Until 2017, Tatiana I. Gardellini Guevara

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The disease of malaria is complex, with clinical presentation that ranges from severe and complicated to mild and uncomplicated or even to asymptomatic malaria. A recent effort made by several world organizations has shown important advances in the effort to control and eradicate malaria. Following the general ordinance established by the trans-border organizations, each country has tried to define, according to their local geopolitical scenario, individual ¨road maps¨ to succeed in reducing the morbidity and mortality caused by malaria. Moreover, it is now accepted universally that these road maps need to be revised and appropriated in order to correct actions …

"The Weak Are Meat, And The Strong Do Eat"; Representations Of The Slaughterhouse In Twentieth And Twenty-First Century Literature, Stephanie Lance Nov 2019

"The Weak Are Meat, And The Strong Do Eat"; Representations Of The Slaughterhouse In Twentieth And Twenty-First Century Literature, Stephanie Lance

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores how literary representations of the slaughterhouse predict the trajectory of human greed that is fueled by capitalist economic practices that shape environmental policies. I argue that literature brings attention to what is generally hidden from public view: the way humans and animals are erased in the production of food, which includes the inhumane treatment of humans and other animals in the slaughterhouse. The literature in this dissertation provides an avenue through which we can investigate the entangled oppression of humans and other animals in an effort to challenge perceptions that reduce animals, and marginalized humans, to objects. …

Volunteer Contributions In The Emergency Department: A Scoping Review, Sophie Glanz, Brittany Ellis, Shelley L. Mcleod, Cameron Thompson, Don Melady, Michelle Nelson

Patient Experience Journal

The objective of this scoping review was to identify published and unpublished reports that described volunteer programs in the emergency department (ED) and determine how these programs impacted patient experiences or outcomes. Electronic searches of Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and CINAHL were conducted and reference lists were hand-searched. A grey literature search was also conducted. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, reviewed full text articles, and extracted data. The search strategy yielded 4,589 potentially relevant citations; 87 reports were included in the review. Volunteer activities were categorized as non-clinical tasks …

Effect Of Storage Temperature On The Survival Or Growth Of Listeria Monocytogenes On Whole And Fresh-Cut Produce, Juan F. Moreira Calix Nov 2019

Effect Of Storage Temperature On The Survival Or Growth Of Listeria Monocytogenes On Whole And Fresh-Cut Produce, Juan F. Moreira Calix

LSU Master's Theses

Whole and fresh-cut produce are minimally processed and, therefore susceptible to microbial contamination. This study examined the survival or growth of Listeria monocytogenes on whole, and fresh-cut produce at different storage temperatures. Fresh fruits (cantaloupes, pears, pineapples, papayas, and watermelon) and vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, kale, and green bell peppers) were cut into 25 g pieces and were spot inoculated with 0.5 mL (8 Log CFU/mL) of Listeria monocytogenes. Inoculated fresh-cut samples were stored at 4°C or 13°C for 6 days. To represent the outer surface of the produce, cantaloupes and green bell pepper disks (20 cm2) were cut with …

Is It ‘A Marriage Of True Minds’? Balanced Reading In Northanger Abbey And Persuasion, Lynda A. Hall Nov 2019

Is It ‘A Marriage Of True Minds’? Balanced Reading In Northanger Abbey And Persuasion, Lynda A. Hall

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Jane Austen often uses reading as a way to develop her characters. For instance, in Persuasion, Captain Benwick‘s melancholic disposition is revealed through his partiality for Romantic poetry, but Anne Elliot’s value for balance is expressed when she recommends moral essays. Other times, and not unfrequently, characters’ reading choice falls on the works of William Shakespeare—such as Hamlet, which Willoughby reads to Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility, and the excerpts from Elegant Extracts we learn that Northanger Abbey’s Catherine Morland has memorized.

Some of Austen’s characters read Shakespeare with seductive intent, but others show their …

Exploring The Relationship Between Geriatric Patients And Their Carers Through Portraiture: Giving, Receiving, Observing & Witnessing Care (Growing Care), Mark A. Gilbert, Regina Idoate, Kenneth Rockwood Nov 2019

Exploring The Relationship Between Geriatric Patients And Their Carers Through Portraiture: Giving, Receiving, Observing & Witnessing Care (Growing Care), Mark A. Gilbert, Regina Idoate, Kenneth Rockwood

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

The process of creating a portrait relies on a series of intimate interactions. Portraits, even those that depict a single individual, are a visual testament to a relationship. Portrait sitters are required to engage with artists in the creation of their personal visual narrative. As viewers of a portrait, we are invited to actively participate in other’s stories, to observe, to question, even stare. This process is integral to the portraits evolving meaning. Giving, receiving, observing & witnessing care (GROWing Care), the case study presented in this manuscript, draws on these multiple exchanges to explore the experience of dementia and …

Preventing Clostridium Difficile Transmission In Hospitals: Family Members Adherence To Infection Control, Danielle Maria Stossier

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Despite widespread knowledge that consistent adherence to contact isolation precautions is a cornerstone of Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) prevention, recent studies continue to demonstrate poor compliance with these basic yet crucial infection prevention interventions, although hygiene has been shown to be the most important risk factor in hospitals acquired infections.

Habitat Associations And Reproduction Of Fishes On The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico Shelf Edge, Elizabeth Marie Keller Nov 2019

Habitat Associations And Reproduction Of Fishes On The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico Shelf Edge, Elizabeth Marie Keller

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Several of the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) shelf-edge banks provide critical hard bottom habitat for coral and fish communities, supporting a wide diversity of ecologically and economically important species. These sites may be fish aggregation and spawning sites and provide important habitat for fish growth and reproduction. Already designated as habitat areas of particular concern, many of these banks are also under consideration for inclusion in the expansion of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. This project aimed to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the communities and fish species on shelf-edge banks by way of gonad histology, …

The Role Of Adaptive Immunity In Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension, Levi David Maston Nov 2019

The Role Of Adaptive Immunity In Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension, Levi David Maston

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Inflammation is a prominent pathologic feature in pulmonary arterial hypertension as demonstrated by pulmonary vascular infiltration of inflammatory cells, including T and B lymphocytes. However, the contribution of the adaptive immune system is not well characterized in pulmonary hypertension (PH) caused by chronic hypoxia (CH). Inflammatory cells, through various mechanisms, have the capability to increase pulmonary vascular resistance in various disease states. CD4+T cells have the potential to play a significant role in the disease process initiated by hypoxia. CD4+T cells are largely responsible for orchestrating downstream immune processes and are critical in focusing and amplifying …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential effects of isomaltodextrin (IMD), a dietary saccharide polymer derived from enzymatically produced from starch, on the ability to alter immune response (IR) bias to hen egg ovalbumin (Ova) induced allergic inflammation in mice. Groups of Balb/c mice were pre-treated with various doses of IMD in drinking water (1.0, 2.5, and 5.0% w/v) for 6 weeks and subsequently sensitized to the Ova together with continuous administration of IMD. To evaluate changes in immune response bias, immunoglobulin isotype-associated antibody activity, concentrations of type 1 and 2 cytokines and the percentage of T-regulatory …
