Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory rheumatoid disease categorized within spondyloarthropathies (SpA) and manifested by chronic spinal arthritis. Several innate and adaptive immune cells and secreted-mediators have been indicated to play a role in AS pathogenesis. Considering the limitations of current therapeutic approaches (NSAIDs, glucocorticoids, DMARDs and biologic drugs), finding new treatments with fewer side effects and high therapeutic potentials are required in AS. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with considerable immunomodulatory and regenerative properties could be able to attenuate the inflammatory responses and help tissue repair by cell-to-cell contact and secretion of soluble factors. Moreover, MSCs do not express HLA-DR, …

Studying Children’S Verb Learning Across Development, Jane B. Childers, Sneh Lalani, Blaire Porter, Sophia Arriazola, Priscilla Tovar-Perez, Bibiana Cutilletta Jan 2019

Studying Children’S Verb Learning Across Development, Jane B. Childers, Sneh Lalani, Blaire Porter, Sophia Arriazola, Priscilla Tovar-Perez, Bibiana Cutilletta

Psychology Faculty Research

A key challenge for young children is learning a language, which is difficult as learning language involves tackling five major rule systems (phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics). This chapter will focus on procedures that can be used to study an important part of language learning: how children learn new words (or the lexicon), particularly verbs. The chapter will begin with practical insights on how to structure a team of undergraduate research assistants who can independently collect data from preschool-aged children (2- to 4-year-olds) in local child care centers. The rest of the chapter will describe three major types of …

Seasonal Diet Variation In Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel (Ictidomys Tridecemlineatus) In Southernwestern Michigan, Austin Menzmer Jan 2019

Seasonal Diet Variation In Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel (Ictidomys Tridecemlineatus) In Southernwestern Michigan, Austin Menzmer

Master's Theses

Thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) are omnivorous ground squirrels that range from Texas to Alberta and from Michigan to Utah. The amount and type of both animal and plant matter in their diet may vary both geographically and seasonally. The present study was motivated by prior work, based on δ13C analysis of incisor enamel of thirteen-lined ground squirrels from a colony in southwestern Michigan, suggesting that these animals underwent a pronounced, late-season shift in diet from predominantly C3 to C4 plants. However, this inferred dietary shift was not directly demonstrated. Here, I tracked diet of thirteen-lined ground squirrels in southwestern …

Assessment Of Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes (Sistrurus Catenatus) In Berrien County Historical Sites, Roshelle M. Hall

Master's Theses

The Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus; EMR) is a small robust pit viper currently found in nine states and the province of Ontario, Canada. Wetland habitats have experienced significant destruction and fragmentation by humans; as a result, the current distribution of the EMR is a fraction of its historic distribution. For this reason, the EMR has been federally listed as threatened. In general, little is known about the current distribution of this rattlesnake (in the southwest corner of Michigan, the size of local populations or their stability and genetic diversity. Much of this knowledge is based upon historical data. My …

Data Usage In Mir: History & Future Recommendations, Wenqin Chen, Jessica Keast, Jordan Moody, Corinne Moriarty, Felicia Villalobos, Virtue Winter, Xueqi Zhang, Xuanqi Lyu, Elizabeth Freeman, Jessie Wang, Sherry Cai, Katherine M. Kinnaird

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

The MIR community faces unique challenges in terms of data access, due in large part to country-specific copyright laws. As a result, there is an emerging divide in the MIR research community between labs that have access to music through large companies with abundant funds, and independent labs at smaller institutions who do not have such expansive access. This paper explores how independent researchers have worked to overcome limitations of access to music data without contributing to the crisis of reproducibility. Acknowledging that there is no single solution for every data access problem that smaller labs face, we propose a …

Statutory Interpretation As “Interbranch Dialogue”?, James J. Brudney, Ethan J. Leib Jan 2019

Statutory Interpretation As “Interbranch Dialogue”?, James J. Brudney, Ethan J. Leib

Faculty Scholarship

Much in the field of statutory interpretation is predicated on “interpretive dialogue” between courts and legislatures. Yet, the idea of such dialogue is often advanced as little more than a slogan; the dialogue that courts, legislators, and scholars are imagining too often goes unexamined and underspecified. This Article attempts to organize thinking about the ways participants and theorists conceive, and should conceive, of interbranch dialogue within statutory interpretation.

The Article itself proceeds by using a dialogic and dialectical method. It first develops various positions against “interbranch dialogue.” By invoking arguments from textualism, public choice, and positive political theory, it advances …

Poetry In Motion: The Federal Rules Of Evidence And Forward Progress As An Imperative, Daniel J. Capra, Liesa L. Richter Jan 2019

Poetry In Motion: The Federal Rules Of Evidence And Forward Progress As An Imperative, Daniel J. Capra, Liesa L. Richter

Faculty Scholarship

This Article dives into the long-standing debate about the propriety of altering the time-honored Federal Rules of Evidence. Noted authorities, such as the late Chief Justice Rehnquist, have eschewed any modification to the Rules, claiming that they must remain essentially fixed in their original form to maximize their utility to trial advocates and to avoid wasteful dislocation costs that accompany updates. Unlike the many scholarly works examining the merits and demerits of particular evidence rules, this Article shines a light on the lesser examined process of amending the Federal Rules of Evidence, revealing a taxonomy of evidentiary circumstances or trigger …

Fiduciary Constitutionalism: Implications For Self- Pardons And Non-Delegation, Ethan J. Leib, Jed H. Shugerman

Faculty Scholarship

The idea that public servants hold their offices in trust for subject-beneficia-ries and that a sovereign’s exercise of its political power must be constrained by fiduciary standards—like the duties of loyalty and care—is not new. But scholars are collecting more and more evidence that the framers of the U.S. Constitution may have sought to constrain public power in ways that we would today call fiduciary. In this article, we explore some important legal conclu-sions that follow from fiduciary constitutionalism.

After developing some historical links between private fiduciary instruments and state and federal constitutions, we opine on what a fiduciary constitution …

Using The Vast Challenge In Undergraduate Cs Research, Christopher P. Andrews, R. Jordan Crouser

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

The Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) Challenge is a yearly competition designed to push forward visual analytics research through synthetic, yet realistic analytic tasks. In this paper, we discuss the challenges and the successes we have experienced incorporating the VAST Challenge and associated datasets into undergraduate research programs at two liberal arts colleges. We advocate for increased undergraduate participation in this and similar competitions, arguing they afford unique opportunities for positive development in early researchers.

Towards Modeling Conceptual Dependency Primitives With Image Schema Logic, Jamie C. Macbeth, Dagmar Gromann Jan 2019

Towards Modeling Conceptual Dependency Primitives With Image Schema Logic, Jamie C. Macbeth, Dagmar Gromann

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Conceptual Dependency (CD) primitives and Image Schemas (IS) share a common goal of grounding symbols of natural language in a representation that allows for automated semantic interpretation. Both seek to establish a connection between high-level conceptualizations in natural language and abstract cognitive building blocks. Some previous approaches have established a CD-IS correspondence. In this paper, we build on this correspondence in order to apply a logic designed for image schemas to selected CD primitives with the goal of formally taking account of the CD inventory. The logic draws from Region Connection Calculus (RCC-8), Qualitative Trajectory Calculus (QTC), Cardinal Directions and …

Family Law: Above And Beyond The Call Of Duty, Marianne Cristina Gonzalez Jan 2019

Family Law: Above And Beyond The Call Of Duty, Marianne Cristina Gonzalez

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

Family law practitioners play a delicate and important role in the lives of clients and their families. As lawyers, we have a duty and an obligation to listen to and understand the client's legal needs, while competently advocating to meet their goals and expectations. But how often do we really pay attention to the mental and spiritual needs of our clients to achieve their goal? Chances are we generally do not, since our own emotional baggage has been left unchecked. We have mastered the skill of tuning out the "red herrings" by trimming the excess, non-essential emotional noise that not …

Erie Doctrine, State Law, And Civil Rights Litigation, Alexander A. Reinert Jan 2019

Erie Doctrine, State Law, And Civil Rights Litigation, Alexander A. Reinert

Articles

How should state law questions and claims be resolved when they arise in federal civil rights litigation? In prior work, I have criticized the given wisdom that the Erie doctrine, while originating in diversity cases, applies in all cases whatever the basis for federal jurisdiction. In that work, I proposed a framework, “Erie Step Zero,” to place Erie questions in their jurisdictional context. As I have argued, the concern with forum shopping and unequal treatment that prompted Erie have less salience in federal question cases. Different concerns emerge when one focuses on the presence of state law issues in …

How U.S. Family Law Might Deal With Spousal Relationships Of Three (Or More) People, Edward D. Stein Jan 2019

How U.S. Family Law Might Deal With Spousal Relationships Of Three (Or More) People, Edward D. Stein

Articles

For much of this nation's history, the vast majority of people have believed that being married to more than one person at the same time is deeply problematic. Further, polygamous marriage has never been legal in the United States. Despite this, some people have been in plural or group relationships and some of these people have wished to gain legal recognition for these relationships. The arguments for recognizing such relationships are persuasive, but the prospects for legalization of polygamous marriage seem slim in the near future. This Article offers a suggestion of how the law of domestic relations might deal …

PCOM Scholarly Works

Myo/Nog cells are identified by their expression of the skeletal muscle specific transcription factor MyoD and the bone morphogenetic protein inhibitor noggin, and binding of the G8 monoclonal antibody. Their release of noggin is critical for morphogenesis and skeletal myogenesis. In the adult, Myo/Nog cells are present in normal tissues, wounds and skin tumors. Myo/Nog cells in the lens give rise to myofibroblasts that synthesize skeletal muscle proteins. The purpose of this study was to screen human lens tissue, rhabdomyosarcoma cell lines, and tissue sections from rhabdomyosarcoma, Wilms and tumors lacking features of skeletal muscle for co-localization of antibodies to …

Methods For The Visualization Of Placental Vasculature In Fetoscopic Surgery, Praneeth Sadda Jan 2019

Methods For The Visualization Of Placental Vasculature In Fetoscopic Surgery, Praneeth Sadda

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome is a potentially fatal disease of placental vasculature in twin pregnancies. It is treated with fetoscopic laser photocoagulation surgery, a procedure in which a surgeon uses an endoscope to find and cauterize abnormal vascular anastamoses on the placental surface. However, even after surgery, mortality remains as high as twenty to forty-eight percent, largely due to anastamoses being missed during the operation. Many technical challenges contribute to anastamoses being missed, including poor endoscopic image quality and a limited field of view. Any tools capable of addressing these challenges would be clinically valuable. This thesis presents the design and …

Evaluation Of The Mechanisms Of Anti-Cancer Immune Responses, Noel Turner Jan 2019

Evaluation Of The Mechanisms Of Anti-Cancer Immune Responses, Noel Turner

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Metastatic melanoma historically carries a grim prognosis, with a median survival of 9 months and a long-term survival rate of 10%. Melanoma is highly immunogenic, and the development of immunotherapies has dramatically changed the landscape of metastatic melanoma treatment. To study the immune mechanisms engaged by these therapies, the Bosenberg lab developed YUMMER, an immunogenic mouse melanoma line that forms tumors when injected into mice. This and other immunogenic murine cancer models were used to demonstrate that B cell depletion does not impair the anti-PD-1-induced anti-tumor immune response in mice. In addition, supplementing immune checkpoint inhibition with therapies targeting myeloid …

A Brief History Of The Catholic Church In Vietnam, Peter N. V. Hai Jan 2019

A Brief History Of The Catholic Church In Vietnam, Peter N. V. Hai

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

In a succinct form, Peter N. V. Hai traces the historical growth of the Church in Vietnam from its beginning (1533) to its present maturation. He brings out salient features of such development: the lay people’s exemplary witness of faith, at times to the point of shedding their blood, their fidelity to the Church, and their zeal for lay ministry. At present they are taking a fuller role in the evangelizing mission of the Church.

Prophetic Dialogue With Cultures And Religions In Fiji: A Pastoral Imperative, Timoci Kolodisi Jan 2019

Prophetic Dialogue With Cultures And Religions In Fiji: A Pastoral Imperative, Timoci Kolodisi

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Timoci Kolodisi begins with a survey of the geography, ethnic groups, socio-cultural and political landscape, and the religious affiliations of the islands of Fiji. He then describes the society’s traditional social structures with its worldview, values, and beliefs before discussing the coming of Christianity to the islands, and the early efforts at inculturation. In conclusion, he invites the Church—if it wishes to be an effective sign and a path to peace—to focus on its spiritual meaning and enhance its relations with the different communities and religions in Fiji.

A New Way Of Being Church: Fabc Teachings On Basic Ecclesial Communities, Ramesh Lakshmanan

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Asian bishops and general AsIPA (Asian Integral Pastoral Approach) assemblies have always insisted that the Asian Church has to be participatory. This is realized through Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs). BECs encourage lay participation in the life and mission of the Church, particularly in the parishes. BECs have brought a new dimension to the ministry of the Church. They have become a good platform to carry out new ministries. This article presents the teachings of the Asian bishops and the AsIPA in their final statements.

Stability Conditions For Coupled Oscillators In Linear Arrays, Pablo Enrique Baldivieso Blanco, J.J.P. Veerman Jan 2019

Stability Conditions For Coupled Oscillators In Linear Arrays, Pablo Enrique Baldivieso Blanco, J.J.P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we give necessary conditions for stability of flocks in R. We focus on linear arrays with decentralized agents, where each agent interacts with only a few its neighbors. We obtain explicit expressions for necessary conditions for asymptotic stability in the case that the systems consists of a periodic arrangement of two or three different types of agents, i.e. configurations as follows: ...2-1-2-1 or ...3-2-1-3-2-1. Previous literature indicated that the (necessary) condition for stability in the case of a single agent (...1-1-1) held that the first moment of certain coefficients governing the interactions between agents has to be …
