From Nursery Rhymes To Childlore: Orality And Ideology, Catalina Millán Scheiding
From Nursery Rhymes To Childlore: Orality And Ideology, Catalina Millán Scheiding
Faculty Works
When approaching nursery rhymes, they appear as a concrete, limited and cohesive collection shared by all English-speaking countries packaged in colorful books or fun, animated Youtube channels. Yet they have truly been something that was alive: a group of productions that changed and increased throughout time, drawn from and shared with different languages and cultures, accommodated or purged, considered to hide secret meanings and, subsequently, fossilized in print. They pre-date literary culture although, since society has become literary, nursery rhymes have been generally approached either from the folkloric ethnography field through a collection and analysis of rhymes, their variations and …

Background and Aims: Large clades of angiosperms are often characterized by diverse interactions with pollinators, but how these pollination systems are structured phylogenetically and biogeographically is still uncertain for most families. Apocynaceae is a clade of >5300 species with a worldwide distribution. A database representing >10 % of species in the family was used to explore the diversity of pollinators and evolutionary shifts in pollination systems across major clades and regions. Methods: The database was compiled from published and unpublished reports. Plants were categorized into broad pollination systems and then subdivided to include bimodal systems. These were mapped against the …

Insurmountable Burdens And Slippery Slopes: A Solution For Pleading Toxic Torts In The Plausibility Era, Zachry Sandifer
Insurmountable Burdens And Slippery Slopes: A Solution For Pleading Toxic Torts In The Plausibility Era, Zachry Sandifer
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
With its decisions in Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly and Ashcroft v. Iqbal in 2007 and 2009, the Supreme Court ushered in a new era of federal pleading standards. The old system of notice pleading was replaced by what has become known as plausibility pleading. In order to avoid dismissal, plaintiffs must now craft their complaints so that all nonconclusory allegations, taken as true, give rise to a claim that is plausible on its face. Immediately after the Court’s decision in Twombly, a heated debate arose in the legal community over many aspects of the new pleading standard. Did it …
Dark Sky Tourism: Economic Impacts On The Colorado Plateau Economy, Usa, David M. Mitchell, Terrel A. Gallaway
Dark Sky Tourism: Economic Impacts On The Colorado Plateau Economy, Usa, David M. Mitchell, Terrel A. Gallaway
College of Humanities and Public Affairs
Purpose - This paper aims to examine the economic impact from dark-sky tourism in national parks in the USA on the Colorado Plateau. The Colorado Plateau is a region encompassing parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah that is known for its dark, star-filled night skies. Tourists in national parks are increasingly interested in observing this natural recreational amenity – especially considering that it is an ecological amenity that is quickly disappearing from the planet. Using a 10-year forecast of visitors to the national parks and using standard input-output modeling, it is observed that, for the first time anywhere, …

A Masterpiece Of Simplicity: Toward A Yoderian Free Exercise Framework For Wedding-Vendor Cases, Austin Rogers
A Masterpiece Of Simplicity: Toward A Yoderian Free Exercise Framework For Wedding-Vendor Cases, Austin Rogers
Marquette Law Review
The Free Exercise Clause was enacted to protect diverse modes of religious
practice. Yet certain expressions of free exercise have entailed concomitant
harm to those outside the religious community, especially LGBTQ persons.
This trend has been acutely present in the recent onslaught of wedding-vendor
cases: LGBTQ persons seek the enforcement of statutorily protected rights,
while religious objectors seek refuge from state intrusion under constitutional
shelter. Consequently, wedding-vendor cases present an area of law in which
free-exercise jurisprudence and anti-discrimination jurisprudence have been
clashing.
However, despite the primacy of religious freedom and equal protection in
American jurisprudence, courts analyze wedding-vendor cases …
The Philosopher's Journey: A Chapter In Kindness And Animals, Vaughn E. Sayers
The Philosopher's Journey: A Chapter In Kindness And Animals, Vaughn E. Sayers
UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses
We each are presented with a choice; do we remain in the cave of ignorance or embark on the philosopher’s journey. Your choice will determine the way in which you interpret this paper. However, I will confidently make the assumption that you, like myself, desire to embrace an existence guided by the light of wisdom. This thesis is one of many chapters in the philosopher’s journey, dealing with animals and (cutting through the jargon) kindness. I have found that a lot of scholarship on animal ethics acknowledges a truth, but does not acknowledge that the application of such a truth …
Delayed Judicial Review Of Agency Action, Luis Inaraja Vera
Delayed Judicial Review Of Agency Action, Luis Inaraja Vera
Law Faculty Scholarship
Should Congress be able to completely exempt the orders issued by a government agency from review by the courts? Some scholars argue that limiting courts’ jurisdiction in this fashion would be unconstitutional. What if, instead, Congress merely delays the point in time when a plaintiff may challenge an administrative order?
In recent years, courts have interpreted many statutes to only allow delayed judicial review of orders. This can cause judicial review to be deferred for several months or even years and, as a result, this mechanism can discourage meritorious challenges of orders. Despite the unfairness of delayed judicial review for …

Triclosan (TCS) is antimicrobial agent that is used in a lot of consumer products, including toothpaste, liquid and bar soap, and cosmetics. TCS has been found in many lakes and rivers in the United States. However, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned TCS recently and it will no longer be used in household products. Despite the recent ban, TCS is known to persist in the environment and may have long-term impacts. We conducted an experiment on using fresh water from three locations Houghton, Green Bay and the Huron Mountains. Our goals in the study is to assess the impact …
The Orexin System In Doca-Salt Hypertension: Regulation Of Vasopressin, Jeremy Bigalke
The Orexin System In Doca-Salt Hypertension: Regulation Of Vasopressin, Jeremy Bigalke
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Orexin is a neuropeptide with a large range of functions, with a recently discovered role in blood pressure (BP) regulation. Although the role of brain orexin system in hypertension has been investigated in several hypertensive animals, it remains unclear whether activation of the orexin system contributes to the development of Deoxycorticosterone-acetate (DOCA) hypertension, an animal model of human salt sensitive hypertension. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that Orexin-1 receptor (OX1R) expression is increased in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), a critical brain area controlling cardiovascular function, which subsequently increases vasopressin (AVP) expression and peripheral secretion, resulting in hypertension development …

Application Of Short Tandem Target Mimic (Sttm) Technique For Functional Analysis Of Micro-Rna396 In Transgenic Poplar Trees, Surattana Boonsai
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Short Tandem Target Mimic (STTM) is a commonly technique used for functional studies of a number of genes in several plant model systems. However, very little is known about application of STTM technique in tree species. In this study, STTM was applied to knock down microRNA396 (miR396) in transgenic poplar trees for the first time. STTM396 expression resulted in dramatic decrease in miR396 expression levels leading to taller plants with larger leaves and larger leaf cell size. Additionally, an expression analysis of growth regulating factor genes (GRFs) that are members of miR396 target gene family showed up-regulation of GRF07 gene …
Pathogen And Indicator Organism Inactivation And Quantification For Low-Cost Low-Tech Biosolids Treatment, Karina Eyre
Pathogen And Indicator Organism Inactivation And Quantification For Low-Cost Low-Tech Biosolids Treatment, Karina Eyre
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Biosolids are a by-product of municipal wastewater treatment which, when treated to reduce pathogens, can be land applied as a fertilizer. Class A biosolids must contain low pathogen levels and are unrestricted in their use. This thesis describes methods to identify pathogen and indicator organism (PIO) inactivation mechanisms and PIO inactivation rates for use in low-cost low-tech Class A processes. Procedures to control the levels of spiked bacteria and viruses, total solids, volatile fatty acids, pH, and temperature in biosolids are described for their use in laboratory experiments. Methods for coliphage in biosolids as a surrogate for total enteric viruses …
A Broadly Protective Thermostable Next Generation Hpv Vaccine Based On A Concatemer Peptide And A Consensus Peptide Of L2 Displayed On Bacteriophage Virus-Like Particles, Lukai Zhai
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Current human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines (Cervarix and Gardasil-9) are highly immunogenic and derived from the major capsid proteins (L1) of different HPV types. L1 is not conserved among different HPV types. Thus, these L1-based vaccines protect mostly against the HPV types included in the vaccines with minimal cross-protection against non-vaccine HPV types. In addition to this, the vaccines require refrigeration during transportation and storage. To broaden protection against diverse HPV infection, we targeted epitopes (17-31, 69-86, and 108-122) on the major capsid protein (L2) of HPV, which are conserved among different HPV types for vaccine design. We explored the display …
Biogeochemical Response To Vegetation And Hydrologic Change In An Alaskan Boreal Fen Ecosystem, Danielle L. Rupp
Biogeochemical Response To Vegetation And Hydrologic Change In An Alaskan Boreal Fen Ecosystem, Danielle L. Rupp
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Boreal peatlands store approximately one third of the earth’s terrestrial carbon, locked away in currently waterlogged and frozen conditions. Peatlands of boreal and arctic ecosystems are affected increasingly by shifting hydrology caused by climate change. The consequences of these relatively rapid ecosystem changes on carbon cycling between the landscape and the atmosphere could provide an amplifying feedback to climate warming. Alternatively, the advancement of terrestrial vegetation into once waterlogged soils could uptake carbon as a sink. Previous work suggests that fens will become an increasingly dominant landscape feature in the boreal. However, studies investigating fens, their response to hydrologic and …
The Implications Of Science And Technology For Chinese Women: A Cultural Study Of The Chinese Era Of Reforms, Wenjing Liu
The Implications Of Science And Technology For Chinese Women: A Cultural Study Of The Chinese Era Of Reforms, Wenjing Liu
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Abstract
This dissertation addresses the gendered implications of science and technology in the era of reforms. It argues that in this era, which began in 1978 and continues today, science and technology are highly romanticized as nearly omnipotent. This results in its being embedded not only into ordinary Chinese people’s lives, hoping to bring them positive changes, but also into the Chinese government’s political practices, hoping to achieve its political purposes through science and technology. It also points out that in the era of reforms, Chinese women’s lived experiences are full of tensions, struggles, and conflicts, as evidenced by the …

Cellulose Nanocrystals As 'Green' Emulsifiers Stabilized Crude Oil In Water Emulsions, Omayma Alazzam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the ability of CNC to stabilize crude o/w Pickering emulsions. The effects of concentration of CNC, ionic strength of the aqueous phase, volume fraction of crude oil to water, and the presence of divalent ions on the stability of crude o/w emulsions were examined. Emulsions stabilized with different concentrations of CNC vary from 0.1 to 1.0wt% were prepared and examined by visual assessment for creaming analysis and microscopic pictures to analyze droplet size and size distribution. Low concentration of CNC as 0.1wt% didn’t help with forming stable emulsions. As the concentration of CNC stabilized the emulsions increased, …

Aim: Reveal the evolutionary processes that contributed to biotic diversification in the Cerrado savanna using amphibians as a model. Evolutionary patterns were investigated by comparing the phylogeographic and biogeographic history of biome-specific yet widely distributed amphibian species (Chiasmocleis albopunctata, Dendropsophus rubicundulus and Physalaemus nattereri). Location: Cerrado region, central South America. Methods: I sampled thousands of loci randomly distributed throughout the genomes of all three species. I applied phylogenetic, phylogeographic, demographic, and coalescent species delimitation methods to these molecular data, in combination with species distribution modeling for the past, in order to resolve questions of evolutionary history, taxonomic diversity, …
3d Challenges: Ensuring Competition And Innovation In 3d Printing, Michal S. Gal
3d Challenges: Ensuring Competition And Innovation In 3d Printing, Michal S. Gal
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Not often does a general-purpose technology disrupt numerous markets and significantly affect social welfare. 3D printing is an exception. This technology promises to improve the quality of certain goods and to greatly increase the efficiency of their production processes. More importantly, it holds potential to reshape entire supply chains, including the design, manufacture, assembly, distribution, warehousing, and marketing of some goods, potentially even eliminating some parts of such chains. By changing the Coasean tradeoff, 3D printing also reshapes relationships between market players. This Article reviews the potential disruptive effects of 3D technology, analyzing the ways it impacts market dynamics and …
Story Reading As A Method For Cognate Vocabulary Learning In Preschool Children, Patricia Thomasio Quinelato
Story Reading As A Method For Cognate Vocabulary Learning In Preschool Children, Patricia Thomasio Quinelato
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative experimental study aims to investigate the learning outcomes of foreign-language cognate vocabulary in preschool children with the use of story reading; more specifically, how the frequency of appearance of the words in children's stories affect the learning outcomes of foreign-language cognate vocabulary and how the children's retention of highly similar cognates compares to that of partial cognates. Stories are believed to be an authentic and credible source of knowledge; they make information more memorable and promote active meaning making (Rossiter, 2002). The procedure includes six sessions with the children for each story: 1. a vocabulary pre-test before each …
Neural Circuits Underlying Rodent Sociality: A Comparative Approach, Nicole S. Lee, Annaliese K. Beery
Neural Circuits Underlying Rodent Sociality: A Comparative Approach, Nicole S. Lee, Annaliese K. Beery
Neuroscience: Faculty Publications
All mammals begin life in social groups, but for some species, social relationships persist and develop throughout the course of an individual’s life. Research in multiple rodent species provides evidence of relatively conserved circuitry underlying social behaviors and processes such as social recognition and memory, social reward, and social approach/avoidance. Species exhibiting different complex social behaviors and social systems (such as social monogamy or familiarity preferences) can be characterized in part by when and how they display specific social behaviors. Prairie and meadow voles are closely related species that exhibit similarly selective peer preferences but different mating systems, aiding direct …
Nature's Queer Negativity: Between Barad And Deleuze, Steven Swarbrick
Nature's Queer Negativity: Between Barad And Deleuze, Steven Swarbrick
Publications and Research
This essay offers a critique of the vitalist turn in queer and ecological theory, here represented by the work of Karen Barad. Whereas Barad advances an image of life geared towards meaningful connection with others, human and nonhuman, Deleuze advances an a-signifying ontology of self-dismissal. The point of this essay isn’t to separate their two views, but to draw out the consequences of their entanglement. Insofar as Barad’s work conceptualizes life (and art) as a vitalizing encounter, it cannot, this essay argues, account for the queer negativity at play in environmental politics, including the politics of climate change.

Background
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is defined by amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles and characterized by neurodegeneration and memory loss. The majority of AD patients also have Aβ deposition in cerebral vessels known as cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), microhemorrhages, and vascular co-morbidities, suggesting that cerebrovascular dysfunction contributes to AD etiology. Promoting cerebrovascular resilience may therefore be a promising therapeutic or preventative strategy for AD. Plasma high-density lipoproteins (HDL) have several vasoprotective functions and are associated with reduced AD risk in some epidemiological studies and with reduced Aβ deposition and Aβ-induced inflammation in 3D engineered human cerebral vessels. In mice, …

Water‐borne hormone measurement is a noninvasive method suitable for amphibians of all sizes that are otherwise difficult to sample. For this method, containment‐water is assayed for hormones released by the animal. Originally developed in fish, the method has expanded to amphibians, but requires additional species‐specific validations. We wanted to determine physiological relevance of water‐borne corticosterone in spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) by comparing concentrations to those taken using established corticosterone sampling methods, such as plasma. Using a mixture of field and laboratory studies, we compared water‐borne corticosterone levels to other traditional methods of sampling corticosterone for spotted salamander larvae, …
