Florida Science: The Science That Makes Florida Different, Terence W. Cavanaugh Jan 2019

Florida Science: The Science That Makes Florida Different, Terence W. Cavanaugh

Secondary Level Resources

This book was created to assist students with their understanding of how science occurs in Florida. When teaching science or any subject it’s important to remember to begin with the concrete and then move to the abstract. I have found that it has helped my students when I begin by teaching science concepts in a concrete manner and expand from there. For example, when I taught about topographic maps, the students were much more successful in their learning when I started with local topographic maps that included the school and the surrounding area than with places that had mountains or …

Is Police Behavior Getting Worse? Data Selection And The Measurement Of Policing Harms, John Rappaport, Aurelie Ouss Jan 2019

Is Police Behavior Getting Worse? Data Selection And The Measurement Of Policing Harms, John Rappaport, Aurelie Ouss

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Public concern about harmful policing is surging. Governments are paying historic amounts for law enforcement liability. Has police behavior changed? Or is society responding differently? Traditional data sources struggle with this question. Common metrics conflate the prevalence and severity of policing harms with the responses of legal actors such as lawyers, judges, and juries. We overcome this problem using a new data source: liability insurance claims. Our dataset contains 23 years of claims against roughly 350 law enforcement agencies that contract with a single insurer. We find that, while lawsuits and payouts have trended upwards over the past decade, insurance …

State Standing’S Uncertain Stakes, Aziz Z. Huq Jan 2019

State Standing’S Uncertain Stakes, Aziz Z. Huq

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Whether states have Article III standing is a question that has in recent years induced a puzzling and nonstandard patterning of votes amongst the Justices of the Supreme Court. It is, of course, not uncommon for that bench to be characterized by sharp ideological divides. What is unusual and symptomatic in the state standing litigation context is rather this: Specific Justices seem to adopt divergent, seemingly inconsistent, positions on the same basic question of constitutional law when it is presented in different litigation matters.1 When it comes to state standing, the Court’s ideological divide is not merely acute but …

Free Speech And Cheap Talk, Daniel Hemel, Ariel Porat Jan 2019

Free Speech And Cheap Talk, Daniel Hemel, Ariel Porat

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

We present a new framework for analyzing defamation liability that serves both to clarify and complicate understandings of the law’s consequences for speakers, victims, and the marketplace of ideas. In addition to the familiar deterrence and chilling effects, we show how defamation liability can generate a “warming effect,” making statements more credible and potentially raising both the quality and quantity of speech. We also explain how a more plaintiff-friendly liability regime may exacerbate harms to defamation victims. We end by considering the possibility of “self-tailored” defamation law, with victims or speakers selecting the defamation liability regime that applies to them.

“Taken To Vt. State Hospital”: Localizing The History Of Mental Health Institutions, A Study Of The Vermont State Asylum For The Insane, 1891-1912, Alecia Bassett

Master's Theses and Capstones

ABSTRACT

“TAKEN TO VT. STATE HOSPITAL”:

LOCALIZING THE HISTORY OF MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTIONS,

A STUDY OF THE VERMONT STATE ASYLUM FOR THE INSANE, 1891-1912

By

Alecia Bassett

University of New Hampshire, December 2019

Often, the term “insane asylum,” invokes a macabre image of a crowded, outdated institution that does not so much care for its patients as secludes them from society. This popularized notion about care for the mentally ill in the many decades before contemporary medicine, is, as often times is the case, based in both fact and fiction. Institutional demands, such as overcrowding, forced many asylum administrators to …

Changes In Walleye Fecundity And Egg Size Before, During, And After Rehabilitation Of The Red Lakes Fishery, Benjamin J. Miller, Benjamin D. Erb Jan 2019

Changes In Walleye Fecundity And Egg Size Before, During, And After Rehabilitation Of The Red Lakes Fishery, Benjamin J. Miller, Benjamin D. Erb

Journal of Earth and Life Science

The Red Lakes in northern Minnesota experienced a major Walleye Sander vitreus fishery crash in the late 20th century, but has since recovered to record abundances and supports a major commercial and recreational fishery. Fecundity is an integral aspect of recruitment that can contribute greatly to the understanding of fishery population dynamics. To elucidate the effects of varying Walleye densities and exploitation rates on fecundity and egg size in years 1989 (overexploited fishery), 2004 (recovering fishery), and 2017 (recovered fishery), we analyzed linear models that related fecundity or egg size to morphological features for these three sampling periods. Walleyes were …

Goldeye Hidon Alosoides Calorimetry In Red Lake, Jesse Mendel Jan 2019

Goldeye Hidon Alosoides Calorimetry In Red Lake, Jesse Mendel

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Goldeye Hiodon alosoides are found across North America and are a relatively unstudied group of fish as they have had no economic value in the past. Ecologically speaking, these fish could have importance to the waters that they inhabit, as they are prey to fishes like Walleyes Sander vitreus, Northern Pike Esox lucius, and Muskellunge Esox masquinongy. These fish could potentially be vital to predatory fishes because of the amount of oil found in these fish, creating gram for gram more energy than compared to other consumable substances. The average energy density for all Goldeye was 6.73 …

Coalescing Finish, Daniel James Mcminn

Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones

This thesis comprises five short stories, the climactic chapter of a novel, two short plays, one short screenplay, and two poems by Daniel James ("Dan") McMinn. The work focused on satisfying endings. Most of the work is speculative fiction---either science fiction or fantasy. The work is prefaced by a statement describing Dan's development as a writer in the Stonecoast MFA in Creative Writing program. The short stories address the following topics:

  • An aging salesman gets replacement internal organs and becomes an opera singer
  • A female presidential candidate must keep a straight face while watching a ridiculous PSA
  • A sniggler (eel-catcher) …

"A Dark, Abiding, Signing Africanist Presence" In Walker Percy’S Dr. Tom More Novels, David Withun Jan 2019

"A Dark, Abiding, Signing Africanist Presence" In Walker Percy’S Dr. Tom More Novels, David Withun

The Coastal Review

Many of the tropes, commonplaces, symbols, and values used and reflected by American literary works written by white authors, as Toni Morrison writes, are “in fact responses to a dark, abiding, signing Africanist presence.” The black/white racial binary and racial différance that mark this presence inform the use of racialized characters as signifiers in the novels of Walker Percy. In the Dr. Tom More novels Love in the Ruins and The Thanatos Syndrome, Percy adopts racial symbolism as a means toward his critique of the American notion of “the pursuit of happiness.” In Love in the Ruins, Percy …

The Effect Of Season Upon The Life Cycle Of Haemonchus Contortus In Experimentally Infected Lambs, Marissa Brummett

Open Access Master's Theses

This project was developed to study the life cycle of the most pathogenic gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) affecting small ruminants, Haemonchus contortus. The main goal of the study was to test the effects that the environment and the age of the adult worm have on the resulting egg’s ability to hatch in vitro and the larvae’s ability to undergo exsheathment both artificially in vitro as well as in vivo within the rumen. A secondary study objective was to compare the results from the two exsheathment assays in order to see how well they correlate.

This study was designed to run …

Minimizing Bee Bycatch In Japanese Beetle Traps, Steven J. Sipolski Jan 2019

Minimizing Bee Bycatch In Japanese Beetle Traps, Steven J. Sipolski

Open Access Master's Theses

Native and introduced bees were attracted to and captured in commercially available Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman, traps baited with floral lure components (geraniol, eugenol, phenethyl propionate [3:7:3]). Studies in Rhode Island found that Bombus impatiens Cresson was significantly more attracted to geraniol alone and as a component in a floral lure blend than to either eugenol or phenethyl propionate alone. Xylocopa virginica L. was more selective in being primarily attracted to traps baited with higher amounts of geraniol in 2016. In 2016, 32 baited and eight unbaited traps captured 856 B. impatiens and 124 X. virginica in 11 days …

This article applies a micro-level lens to details of disincentives embodied in the new U.S. tax law effective in 2018, affecting corporate action to address climate change, and applies a macro-level assessment of how corporate action is affecting U.S. realization of its climate change goals and requirements. The article examines and offers several state law options that can substitute as alternative incentives, and an unrelated ‘Opportunity Zone’ provision in the new federal tax law, all of which can provide alternative legal paths.

The Links Between Motivational Techniques, Successful Physical Therapists, And Successful Rehab Clinics, Abigail Alyse Richmond Jan 2019

The Links Between Motivational Techniques, Successful Physical Therapists, And Successful Rehab Clinics, Abigail Alyse Richmond

Senior Honors Theses

There is a strong positive correlation between a successful physical therapist (PT), their clinic, and the motivational techniques used during therapy. The PT should be prepared to sit down with each patient and set short- and long-term goals to help them accomplish what they desire through therapy. Effective communication skills, practical skills and technique, individualized care, and organizational and environmental factors are the four major aspects that define patient-therapist relationships. Patient adherence to their home exercise program (HEP) is vital to a successful rehabilitation, and therefore the PT’s goal should be to help the patient understand the importance of the …

Music As Evidence For A Creator, Andrew Foster Jan 2019

Music As Evidence For A Creator, Andrew Foster

Senior Honors Theses

Throughout history, mankind has made music. While music is artistic, it is also scientific and informed by natural occurrences within the physical world. Mathematical relationships between frequencies, the harmonic series, the materials necessary to build musical instruments, and naturally measured time provide bases for the musical elements of pitch, timbre, and rhythm. Though scientific discovery can inform the practice of music, the origin of music cannot be explained through scientific or evolutionary means because music is not a necessity for survival. The fact that music does exist and has natural bases suggests that music is designed, and its elements were …

Evolution Of C-Reactive Protein, Asmita Pathak, Alok Agrawal Jan 2019

Evolution Of C-Reactive Protein, Asmita Pathak, Alok Agrawal

ETSU Faculty Works

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an evolutionarily conserved protein. From arthropods to humans, CRP has been found in every organism where the presence of CRP has been sought. Human CRP is a pentamer made up of five identical subunits which binds to phosphocholine (PCh) in a Ca2+-dependent manner. In various species, we define a protein as CRP if it has any two of the following three characteristics: First, it is a cyclic oligomer of almost identical subunits of molecular weight 20–30 kDa. Second, it binds to PCh in a Ca2+-dependent manner. Third, it exhibits immunological cross-reactivity with human CRP. In the …
