Comparing Abundance Estimates From Closed Population Mark-Recapture Models Of Endangered Adult Atlantic Sturgeon, J E. Kahn, C Hager, J C. Watterson, N Mathies, K J. Hartman
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus were listed as 5 distinct population segments under the US Endangered Species Act in 2012. At that time, only 2 abundance estimates of the Atlantic sturgeon population were available: one from commercial fisheries landings in the Hudson River ending in 1995 and one from mark-recapture research in the Altamaha River, Georgia, in 2004 and 2005. In 2013, we verified spawning in the York River, Virginia, system and initiated a multiple-year mark-recapture study focusing on spawning-run abundance. We used a Schumacher-Eschmeyer model and Program CAPTURE to produce estimates of annual spawning abundances from 2013 to 2018. …

In Silico Design And In Vitro Development Of A Highly Accurate Test To Detect Brucella Species, Hosein Safari, Setareh Shahnazari, Maysam Mard-Soltani, Somayeh Tavakoli, Bahman Khalesi
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background: Conventionalmethods of detecting Brucella spp. suffer from technical and biological complications. Besides, newly characterized species of the genus Brucella could be neglected by previously designed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. Therefore, a more accurate PCR-based test seems to be imminently needed. Materials and methods: Blood samples were collected from 39 patients diagnosed with brucellosis and 25 healthy controls. Multiple sequence alignments (MSA) were performed on 500 Omp2-related protein and gene sequences. Thereafter, specific primers were designed and synthesized for the regions with highest conservancy. The collected samples were assessed by PCR test. To overcome the cross-reactivity issue, PCR thermal …

Inhibitory Effect Of Canine Amniotic Membrane Against Common Bacterial Pathogens Associated With Ulcerative Keratitis, Rajit Lohajaroensub
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Infectious ulcerative keratitis is one of the significant ocular diseases in dogs leading to aggressive damage of the cornea and possibly loss of vision. Canine amniotic membrane (CAM) transplant revealed satisfactory result in canine complicated ulcers. However, antimicrobial activity of CAM has not yet been elucidated. This study is to assess antimicrobial activities of fresh CAM on bacteria associated with ulcerative keratitis and to investigate antimicrobial peptide genes expression. A total of twenty-three CAMs from healthy puppies were collected. Nineteen CAMs were tested for antimicrobial activity by modified disk diffusion test. Four CAMS were tested for mRNA expression of antimicrobial …
Shaping Sexual Identity In Weimar Republic Germany, Megan Caldwell
Shaping Sexual Identity In Weimar Republic Germany, Megan Caldwell
Undergraduate Research Awards
The Weimar Republic, existing from 1919 to 1933, has conventionally been seen by scholars as a time of sexual discovery. In general, the late 19th and early 20th century saw an increase in the formalized study of sexuality, called sexology. This was nowhere more prominent than in Germany where notable sexologists like Magnus Hirschfeld and Richard von Krafft-Ebing carved out their professions. In addition to providing terms and medical explanations for forms of attractions outside of the understood norm, the works of sexologists that emerged and gained distinction during this time featured progressive – albeit limited – ideas that worked …

Secreted Protein Acidic And Rich In Cysteine In The Periodontal Ligament: Mechanisms Of Collagen Assembly And Cross-Linking In Health And Disease, Emilie Ann Rosset
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The collagen fibers that span the periodontal ligament (PDL) connect teeth to the bone socket by weaving through the cementum of each tooth as well as into the alveolar bone. Collagen type I is the main structural component of the PDL. High rates of extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover are characteristic of PDL tissue. Periodontal disease (PD) afflicts approximately 50% of the population in the United States. PD is marked by chronic inflammation of the periodontium leading to PDL degradation, alveolar bone loss, and eventual tooth loss. There are currently no accepted methodologies to regenerate this collagenous PDL tissue. Thus PDL …

Our solution of the anti-monopoly problems must be in terms of our ideals-- the ideals of political and economic democracy. We want no economic or political dictatorship imposed upon us either by the government or by big business. We want no system of detailed regulation of prices by the government nor price fixing by private interests. We do not want bureaucracy or regimentation of any kind, but we will prefer governmental to private bureaucracy and regimentation, if we have to make such a choice. We cannot permit private corporations to be private governments. We must keep our economic system under …

Inquiries Of Entomophagy: Developing And Determining The Efficacy Of Youth-Based Curriculum, Dakota Vaccaro, Kaitlyn Anderson, Lauren Clark, Ellie Gluhosky, Sarah Lutch, Spencer Lachman
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Entomophagy is the human use of insects as food. This practice is exhibited around the world by a variety of cultures with densities highest in the continents of Africa, Australia, and South America. However, entomophagy is not commonly practiced in the United States and as a result many Americans lack the knowledge necessary for understanding, appreciating, and using this practice. As the value of finite natural resources and impacts of food production are recognized by Americans, entomophagy has become a more socially-viable alternative food source because its environmental benefits allow consumers to justify their interest and adoption of the practice. …

JUSTICE Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.'s “marketplace of ideas” analogy continues to deeply influence First Amendment doctrine. It provides a rational substratum upon which the political or self-realization characterizations of free speech are built. However, typically overlooked is the Social Darwinistic root of the Justice's thought. He championed the spread of ideas and the political sway of majority opinions. That analytical insight is key to many of the Supreme Court's free speech precedents. On the one hand, the concept is invaluable for defending free discussions about philosophy, political science, the arts, humanities, pedagogy, and social sciences. In these areas, the …

Comparing Live-Capture Methods For Nutria: Single- Versus Multiple-Capture Cage Traps, Trevor Robert Sheffels, Mark D. Sytsma, Jacoby Carter, Jimmy D. Taylor
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Herbivory and burrowing by nutria (Myocastor coypus) cause substantial ecological and economic damage. Trapping is a common, effective practice for reducing nutria damage; however, trapping approaches must continually be adapted to keep pace with evolving animal welfare and ethical issues and to more effectively target pest species of interest. Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of 2 nonlethal trap types for nutria: single-capture (SCT) and multi-capture (MCT) cage traps. We established 3 MCTs and 3 SCTs at each of 7 sites on a 10,500-ha mixed-use island located 15 km northwest of Portland, Oregon, USA. We pre-baited using …

Relationship Between Exposure To Nature In Childhood And Environmental Identity In Adulthood, Samantha Koss
Relationship Between Exposure To Nature In Childhood And Environmental Identity In Adulthood, Samantha Koss
Student Research Posters
It is a universal understanding that in order for nature to survive, humans must live responsibly. In October 2018 at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world’s leading scientists issued a twelve year ultimatum to change our environmental habits (National Geographic, 2018). However, the critical issue of climate change has not evoked a correspondingly serious and crucial response among the general public.
Ecological identity, otherwise known as Environmental identity, refers to how one views oneself in relation to the natural world, and a part of how we form our self-concept (Clayton, 2013).
Past research has shown that humans feel …
Defining Boundaries: How A City And County Addressed Legalized Recreational Marijuana, Tera Kathleen Hinkley-Bressi
Defining Boundaries: How A City And County Addressed Legalized Recreational Marijuana, Tera Kathleen Hinkley-Bressi
Geography Masters Research Papers
In 2012 Washington state voters legalized recreational marijuana; local jurisdictions retained the option to ban recreational marijuana production, processing, and/or retail sales. Licenses for marijuana business could be distributed by the state to licensees in areas where local laws prohibited the business. This disconnect prompted legal battles between local governments and would-be business owners, as exemplified in the central Washington county of Yakima and the county seat, the city of Yakima. After a series of state policy changes and local community outcry, the city of Yakima reversed its initial ban, while the county continued prohibition. This paper explores issues underlying …
