Salivary Proteomic Analysis For Detection And Monitoring Treatment Response In Canine Oral Tumors, Sekkarin Ploypetch
Salivary Proteomic Analysis For Detection And Monitoring Treatment Response In Canine Oral Tumors, Sekkarin Ploypetch
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Tumors of the oral cavity account for 8% of all canine neoplasia. Malignant oral mass such as melanoma, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and fibrosarcoma covers approximately 59% of canine oral neoplasia. Among these, canine oral melanoma (COM) is the most common oral tumors in dogs, with approximately 30–40% of all oral tumors. With high recurrence and/or distant metastasis rate, biomarkers are required for early detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring treatment response. Since saliva directly contacts tumors and saliva collection is non-invasive, easily accessible and cost effective, salivary biomarkers are suitable to support the evaluation of oral diseases. This study …

Computational Design And Production Of Levansucrase With Increased Thermostability, Methus Klaewkla
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Levansucrase is a carbohydrate-modifying enzyme that catalyzes hydrolysis of sucrose and transfructosylation of a fructosyl unit of sucrose to produce levan and levan-type fructooligosaccharides (LFOs). Due to their various beneficial properties such as low viscosity and non-toxicity. Levan and LFOs have potential applications in many industries such as prebiotics in food industries and anti-tumor agents in pharmaceutical industries. Previous study found that the Y246S mutant of Bacillus licheniformis RN-01 levansucrase (Oligosaccharide Producing Levansucrase, OPL) could effectively produce LFOs, but its thermostability is limited at high temperature. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) and computational protein design were used to design …

Tyrosinase Inhibitors From Some Plants, Ponglada Sadangrit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Tyrosinase is the key enzyme in melanogenesis leading to skin darkening. Many skin whitening products contain tyrosinase inhibitors or extracts that inhibit tyrosinase activity. Moreover, natural extracts are one of the most popular alternatives. They are safe and have less side effects. To determine the effects of plant compounds on melanogenesis, tyrosinase activity was evaluated in in vitro and cellular screening. Melanin level was measured in B16F10 melanoma cells. In addition, the gene expression level of melanogenesis-related genes was explored by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Fifteen plant compounds were tested by in vitro mushroom tyrosinase inhibition assay to …

Biocompatible Materials Loaded With Plant Extract For Ph Sensing, Kasitnun Chayavanich
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The pH-sensitive films and resin were developed based on natural pH-sensitive coloring agents and biocompatible polymers. Anthocyanins and a curcumin derivative were selected as the natural pH-sensitive coloring agents. At first, anthocyanins were extracted from red radish and their contents were determined by using the pH-differential method. Difluoro boron curcumin was synthesized to improve its photophysical and stability properties. Next, both coloring agents were characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, and NMR techniques as well as their color response in solution was studied in different pHs with UV-Vis profiles. The results showed that the red radish anthocyanin solution could change the colors …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Nosocomial infection or hospital acquired infection is the major factor for micro- and macro- economic issues since this contagion provides physical and psychological suffering of infected patients and their own families. Moreover, the government has to subsidize for new case reduction and relief in which this infection trends to increase every year. Thus, this research aimed to solve this main issue by reducing the pathway of cross-contamination on the textile products. Coating textiles with antimicrobial and water-repellent material was selected for this work. The coating material was produced using cellulose nanofibers from sugarcane bagasse waste which sugarcane is the important …

Evidence-Based Music Therapy Treatment To Elevate Mood During Acute Stroke Care, Jessica L. Rushing
Evidence-Based Music Therapy Treatment To Elevate Mood During Acute Stroke Care, Jessica L. Rushing
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. with approximately 795,000 Americans experiencing a stroke each year. In addition to common difficulties with communication and physical impairments following stroke, psychosocial impacts warrant assessment and treatment. Experiencing a stroke can lead to depression, mood disorders, and difficulties with emotion regulation. It is well documented that post-stroke depression (PSD) affects a third of stroke survivors. Higher levels of depression and depressive symptoms are associated with a less efficient use of rehabilitation services, poor functional outcomes, greater odds of hospital readmission, negative impacts on social participation, and increased mortality. The …

With the growing prevalence of myopia, already at epidemic levels in some countries, there is an urgent need for new management approaches. However, with the increasing number of research publications on the topic of myopia control, there is also a clear necessity for agreement and guidance on key issues, including on how myopia should be defined and how interventions, validated by well-conducted clinical trials, should be appropriately and ethically applied. The International Myopia Institute (IMI) reports the critical review and synthesis of the research evidence to date, from animal models, genetics, clinical studies, and randomized controlled trials, by more than …

"Don't Have A Cow" . . . Or The Restatement (Second), David G. Epstein, Roxanne M. Eastes
Law Faculty Publications
“Don’t have a cow” is not only Bart Simpson’s mantra but also the admonition of the Michigan Supreme Court in Lenawee County Board of Health v. Messerly. For almost a hundred years, law students and lawyers had a cow to instruct them on the law of mistake: Rose II of Aberlone – the cow in Sherwood v. Walker.
Most American lawyers and judges have read Sherwood v. Walker in their contracts casebook and/or have heard their contracts professor talk about the Michigan Supreme Court decision in Sherwood v. Walker and Rose II of Aberlone. Lawyers of a certain age remember …

Childhood adversity is associated with altered reward processing, but little is known about whether this varies across distinct types of adversity. In a sample of 94 children (6–19 years), we investigated whether experiences of material deprivation, emotional deprivation, and trauma have differential associations with reward-related behavior and white matter microstructure in tracts involved in reward processing. Material deprivation (food insecurity), but not emotional deprivation or trauma, was associated with poor reward performance. Adversity-related influences on the integrity of white matter microstructure in frontostriatal tracts varied across childhood adversity types, and reductions in frontostriatal white matter integrity mediated the association of …

Frank Beach Award Winner: Neuroendocrinology Of Group Living, Annaliese K. Beery
Neuroscience: Faculty Publications
Why do members of some species live in groups while others are solitary? Group living (sociality) has often been studied from an evolutionary perspective, but less is known about the neurobiology of affiliation outside the realms of mating and parenting. Colonial species offer a valuable opportunity to study nonsexual affiliative behavior between adult peers. Meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) display environmentally induced variation in social behavior, maintaining exclusive territories in summer months, but living in social groups in winter. Research on peer relationships in female meadow voles demonstrates that these selective preferences are mediated differently than mate relationships in …

A Review Of The Putative Causal Mechanisms Associated With Lower Macular Pigment In Diabetes Mellitus, Grainne Scanlon, James Loughman, Donal Farrell, Daniel Mccartney
Articles
Macular pigment (MP) confers potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects at the macula, and may therefore protect retinal tissue from the oxidative stress and inflammation associated with ocular disease and ageing. There is a body of evidence implicating oxidative damage and inflammation as underlying pathological processes in diabetic retinopathy. MP has therefore become a focus of research in diabetes, with recent evidence suggesting that individuals with diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, have lower MP relative to healthy controls. The present review explores the currently available evidence to illuminate the metabolic perturbations that may possibly be involved in MP’s depletion. Metabolic co-morbidities …

Designing Biomimetic Implant Surfaces To Promote Osseointegration Under Osteoporotic Conditions By Revitalizing Mechanisms Coupling Bone Resorption To Formation, Ethan M. Lotz
Theses and Dissertations
In cases of compromised bone remodeling like osteoporosis, insufficient osseointegration occurs and results in implant failure. Implant retention relies on proper secondary fixation, which is developed during bone remodeling. This process is disrupted in metastatic bone diseases like osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is characterized low bone mass and bone strength resulting from either accelerated osteoclast-mediated bone resorption or impaired osteoblast-mediated bone formation. These two processes are not independent phenomena. In fact, osteoporosis can be viewed as a breakdown of the cellular communication connecting bone resorption to bone formation. Because bone remodeling occurs at temporally generated specific anatomical sites and at different times, …

Drug‐reinforced excessive operant responding is one fundamental feature of long-lasting addiction‐like behaviors and relapse in animals. However, the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms responsible for the persistent drug‐specific (not natural rewards) operant behavior are not entirely clear. In this study, we demonstrate a key role for one of the de novo DNA methyltransferase, DNMT3a, in the acquisition of morphine self‐administration (SA) in rats. The expression of DNMT3a in the hippocampal CA1 region but not in the nucleus accumbens shell was significantly up‐regulated after 1‐ and 7‐day morphine SA (0.3 mg/kg/infusion) but not after the yoked morphine injection. On the other hand, saccharin …

The Social Interaction Model Of Objectification: A Process Model Of Goal-Based Objectifying Exchanges Between Men And Women, Sarah Gervais, Gemma Sáez, Abigail R. Riemer, Olivier Klein
The Social Interaction Model Of Objectification: A Process Model Of Goal-Based Objectifying Exchanges Between Men And Women, Sarah Gervais, Gemma Sáez, Abigail R. Riemer, Olivier Klein
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
People perceive and treat women as sex objects in social exchanges. The interaction processes through which women are objectified, however, have rarely been considered. To address this gap in the literature, we propose the Social Interaction Model of Objectification (SIMO). Rooted in social exchange and objectification theories, the SIMO predicts objectifying behaviors stemming from sexual goals between men and women. We propose that the behavioral dynamics of objectification can be understood through a series of goal-based exchange processes that are shaped by patriarchy. Articulating the SIMO and its predictions for Behavior in social interactions, we describe the scant social psychological …

Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) is a modelling tool used to evaluate sufficiently realistic simulations of potential policy choices in complex systems. As a contribution to the Integrated Marine Biosphere Research (IMBeR) project IMBIZO V, which occurred in October 2017, a workshop was convened with the goal of developing a coherent understanding of best-practice approaches for MSEs. MSEs are becoming standard approaches to characterizing risk across fisheries management organizations globally. MSEs are important tools that aid in delineating objectives, costs, and constraints that define risk and provide a possible mechanism to meet assessment challenges. The MSE workshop considered case studies drawn …
Approach To Constitutional Principles And Environmental Discretion In Canada, Lynda Collins, Lorne Sossin
Approach To Constitutional Principles And Environmental Discretion In Canada, Lynda Collins, Lorne Sossin
Articles & Book Chapters
One of the most important and least scrutinized areas of environmental policy is the exercise of administrative discretion. Those committed to environmental action tend to focus on law reform, international treaties, and political commitments - for example, election proposals for carbon taxes and pipelines, or environmental protections in global protocols and trade agreements. Many proponents of stronger environmental protection have focused their attention on the goal of a constitutional amendment recognizing an explicit right to a healthy environment, while others seek recognition of environmental protection within existing Charter rights. As the rights conversation evolves, advocates must continue to grapple with …

The paper stems from a research collaboration with the Anishini community of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI), known as the people of Big Trout Lake in the far north of Ontario. In the face of renewed threats of encroachment by extractive industries onto their homelands, our research team visited the community on the invitation of leadership in 2017. The community was engaged in strategic planning and reflection on the work that they have done in recent years to articulate and record their own laws for the territory, and to gain recognition for those laws from settler governments. Between 2008 and 2018, …

Employment Standards (es) legislation sets minimum terms and conditions of employment in areas such as wages, working time, vacations and leaves, and termination and severance. es legislation is designed to provide minimum workplace protections, particularly for those with little bargaining power in the labour market. In practice, however, es legislation includes ways in which legislated standards may be avoided, including through exemptions that exclude specified employee groups, fully or partially, from legislative coverage. With a focus on the Ontario Employment Standards Act, this article develops a case study of exemptions to the overtime pay provision of the act and regulations …
Value Creation: A Constant Principle In A Changing World Of International Taxation, Jinyan Li, Nathan Jin Bao, Huaning Li
Value Creation: A Constant Principle In A Changing World Of International Taxation, Jinyan Li, Nathan Jin Bao, Huaning Li
Articles & Book Chapters
The authors consider the new nomenclature of value creation in terms of its meaning, theoretical basis, and importance in the context of the international taxation of business profits. The authors’ central claim is that the principle of value creation is a profound elaboration of the doctrine of economic allegiance, which is the theoretical basis for the current international tax system; and that international tax norms, such as the arm’s-length principle, are meant to give effect to the doctrine of economic allegiance (and now to the principle of value creation). As demonstrated by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development/Group of …

Masked By Trust: Bias In Library Discovery, Matthew Reidsma
Books and Contributions to Books
The rise of Google and its integration into nearly every aspect of our lives has pushed libraries to adopt similar "Google-like" search tools, called discovery systems. Because these tools are provided by libraries and search scholarly materials rather than the open web, we often assume they are more "accurate" or "reliable" than their general-purpose peers like Google or Bing. But discovery systems are still software written by people with prejudices and biases, library software vendors are subject to strong commercial pressures that are often hidden behind diffuse collection-development contracts and layers of administration, and they struggle to integrate content from …

Metaphorical Imagery In Colossians: The Narrative Of Christian Living, Paul Muther
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Muther, Paul D. “Metaphorical Imagery in Colossians: The Narratives of Christian Living.” STM thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2019. 114 pp.
Although many recent theologians employ conceptual metaphor theory to the Bible’s imagery surrounding the Gospel, few apply the same theory to the metaphors of Christian living. Although many theologians develop models to demonstrate the overall picture of Christian living, few tease out the implications of individual metaphors throughout a given work.
By applying conceptual metaphor theory and Justin Rossow’s narrative analysis tool of the actantial model to the text of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, this STM thesis examines three metaphors …

A novel class of bivalent ligands targeting putative protease-activated receptor (PAR) heteromers has been prepared based upon reported antagonists for the subtypes PAR1 and PAR2. Modified versions of the PAR1 antagonist RWJ-58259 containing alkyne adapters were connected via cycloaddition reactions to azide-capped polyethylene glycol (PEG) spacers attached to imidazopyridazine-based PAR2 antagonists. Initial studies of the PAR1–PAR2 antagonists indicated that they inhibited G alpha q-mediated calcium mobilization in endothelial and cancer cells driven by both PAR1 and PAR2 agonists. Compounds of this novel class hold promise for the prevention of restenosis, cancer cell metastasis, and other proliferative disorders.
