Embodied Healthcare Intuition: A Taxonomy Of Sensory Cues Used By Healthcare Providers, Lillian Campbell, Elizabeth L. Angeli Jan 2019

Embodied Healthcare Intuition: A Taxonomy Of Sensory Cues Used By Healthcare Providers, Lillian Campbell, Elizabeth L. Angeli

English Faculty Research and Publications

Although healthcare providers’ decision-making is informed by data and protocols for care, recent research suggests that individuals’ intuition—which integrates previous experiences with situational awareness and sensory knowledge—also plays a large role in directing action. Drawing on two different datasets from research on EMS providers and nurses in clinical nursing simulations, this article introduces a taxonomy for the various cues that trigger intuitive action and unpacks how intuition manifests at different stages of care. We argue that healthcare providers rhetorically navigate a wide range of both external and internal intuitive cues, and that external cues draw on sensory engagement with bodies, …

Nebraska’S Natural Resource District System: Collaborative Approaches To Adaptive Groundwater Quality Governance, Gregory N. Sixt, Laurens Klerkx, J. David Aiken, Timothy S. Griffin Jan 2019

Nebraska’S Natural Resource District System: Collaborative Approaches To Adaptive Groundwater Quality Governance, Gregory N. Sixt, Laurens Klerkx, J. David Aiken, Timothy S. Griffin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Nonpoint source pollution of groundwater by nitrates from agricultural activity is a persistent problem for which developing effective policy approaches has proven difficult. There is little empirical information on forms of governance or regime attributes that effectively and sustainably address agricultural nonpoint source pollution of groundwater. Nebraska’s Natural Resource District (NRD) system is a rare example of a groundwater governance regime that is putting programmes in place that are likely to generate sustainable groundwater quality outcomes. We focus on three groundwater nitrate management programmes in the state that collectively represent the broader NRD system. The research shows that four elements …

Comparative Optic Nerve Head Physiology: Glaucoma Induced Retinal Ganglion Cell Apoptosis By Disruption Of The Translaminar Pressure Gradient And Reduced Neurotrophic Signaling, Cassidy Christopherson Jan 2019

Comparative Optic Nerve Head Physiology: Glaucoma Induced Retinal Ganglion Cell Apoptosis By Disruption Of The Translaminar Pressure Gradient And Reduced Neurotrophic Signaling, Cassidy Christopherson

Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness, and the second leading vision loss neurodegenerative disease affecting millions worldwide. Glaucoma is characterized as a group of eye disorders which are initially asymptomatic but may progress to significant optic nerve head damage and vision loss with time. Early stages of glaucoma often go undetected, leading to irreversible damage to the optic nerve head prior to patients seeking medical care. Glaucoma leads to vision loss via death of retinal ganglion cells. Retinal ganglion cell apoptosis is thought to begin due to interference with the normal transmission of neurotrophic signals that arrive by …

Irritable Bowel Syndrome With Constipation (Ibs-C) Treatment Efficacy And The Emerging Importance Of Serotonin, Meghan Schenk

Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects

Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) affects a large proportion of the population. It decreases quality of life for the patient both physically and mentally. Patients report higher levels of mental health issues and other gastrointestinal maladies compared to the normal population, in addition to an IBS diagnosis. Patients have increased healthcare visits and costs, raising insurance rates for all, and also results in more missed time from work. There are limited treatments available for IBS-C, and medicinal and non-medicinal modalities are differentially prescribed to patients throughout the country. Recently, serotonin has emerged as a key mediator of normal gut …

Many experiments were analyzed regarding different CTE pathologies, symptoms, and treatments. Articles used in this paper …

Biblical Principles For Pro-Life Engagement: Personhood, Scripture, And Church History, David Closson Jan 2019

Biblical Principles For Pro-Life Engagement: Personhood, Scripture, And Church History, David Closson

Christian Worldview

With the continued prominence of abortion in American politics and popular culture, it is crucial for Christians to know what the Bible actually says about the issue of abortion. Does the Bible teach that life begins at conception or birth? Is abortion murder? On these questions and others, we believe the Bible has a clear word. Therefore, it is the goal of this publication to present the Bible’s teaching on the issue of abortion. Furthermore, and perhaps surprising to many, the church has grappled with this debate for centuries, and thus has resources from which to articulate a faithful response. …

Mechanical Stresses On Nasal Mucosa Using Nose-On-Chip Model, Zachary Edward Brooks Jan 2019

Mechanical Stresses On Nasal Mucosa Using Nose-On-Chip Model, Zachary Edward Brooks

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research was to design and fabricate a nose-on-chip device and bi-directional airflow system that models flow within the nasal cavity to investigate how airflow induced mechanical stresses impact nasal secretion rates and cytoskeletal remodeling. This research hypothesizes that the airflow induced shear stresses on the nasal mucosa will influence mucus production and the cytoskeleton of the cells. The RPMI 2650 cell line was used to model the nasal mucosa. The system was used to replicate the wall shear stresses (WSS) and wall shear forces (WSF) present in the anterior region of the nose. The WSS and …

The Role Of Antarctica In Biogeographical Reconstruction: A Point Of View, Manuel De La Estrella, Sven Buerki, Thais Vasconcelos, Eve J. Lucas, Félix Forest

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Premise of research. The opening of the Drake Passage in the Miocene (disconnecting Antarctica and South America and resulting in the establishment of the Circumpolar Current preventing warm waters from the north to reach the polar continent) has led to the formation of the ice sheets and the retreat of the temperate to tropical vegetation that had covered Antarctica for millions of years. With only two current native vascular plant species, Antarctica has been virtually ignored in biogeographical reconstructions and, when considered, only a posteriori invoked as a route of dispersal to reconcile inferred disjunct biogeographical patterns.

Methodology. Here, we …

Puerto Rico Sicydium Goby Diversity: Species-Specific Insights On Population Structures And Distributions, Augustin C. Engman, Gabriela M. Hogue, Wayne C. Starnes, Morgan E. Raley, Thomas J. Kwak Jan 2019

Puerto Rico Sicydium Goby Diversity: Species-Specific Insights On Population Structures And Distributions, Augustin C. Engman, Gabriela M. Hogue, Wayne C. Starnes, Morgan E. Raley, Thomas J. Kwak

Neotropical Biodiversity

Sicydiine gobies are major contributors to Caribbean stream fish biodiversity, and ecosystem functions and services. In the Caribbean, Sicydiine gobies are represented by a single genus, Sicydium, but species-level Sicydium taxonomy and distributions remain unresolved in this region. A previous study posited that four species of Sicydium are present in Puerto Rico, including the recently described Sicydium gilberti; however, that study relied solely on morphological characters, and samples from a limited number of locations. Identification of Sicydium to species in studies with more comprehensive sampling has not occurred due to the impracticality of field identification. In our study, we employed …

A Cost-Effective Protocol For Total Dna Isolation From Animal Tissue, Nicolás Peñafiel, Diana M. Flores, Juan Rivero De Aguilar, Juan M. Guayasamin, Elisa Bonaccorso Jan 2019

A Cost-Effective Protocol For Total Dna Isolation From Animal Tissue, Nicolás Peñafiel, Diana M. Flores, Juan Rivero De Aguilar, Juan M. Guayasamin, Elisa Bonaccorso

Neotropical Biodiversity

Laboratories that perform PCR on a routine basis need to count on reliable DNA isolation methods. In locations where supply of DNA extraction kits depends on importation, having an in-house protocol is desirable. This is also important for laboratories limited by budget constraints. We present a low-cost DNA isolation protocol that incorporates well-known techniques, but that we have adapted to various animal tissues. We tested this protocol on animal blood and muscle, and on cell suspension from skin swabs. The results were comparable, in terms of amount and quality of DNA, to those obtained with two other commercially available methods. …

Clown Eggs, David Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski Jan 2019

Clown Eggs, David Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski

Faculty Articles

Since 1946, many clowns have recorded their makeup by having it painted on eggs that are kept in a central registry in Wookey Hole, England. This tradition, which continues today, has been referred to alternately as a form of informal copyright registration and a means of protecting clowns’ property in their personae. This Article explores the Clown Egg Register and its surrounding practices from the perspective of law and social norms. In so doing, it makes several contributions. First, it contributes another chapter to the growing literature on the norms-based governance of intellectual property, showing how clowns—like comedians, roller derby …

The Fallacy Of Defensive Protection For Traditional Knowledge, Margo A. Bagley Jan 2019

The Fallacy Of Defensive Protection For Traditional Knowledge, Margo A. Bagley

Faculty Articles

Proponents of databases as defensive protection posit that having sources of traditional knowledge easily accessible to, and searchable by, examiners during the prosecution process should minimize the grant of patents covering traditional knowledge, and avoid the problems such erroneously granted patents may produce. Some countries, such as India, which support an international sui generis positive protection instrument, also support the use of traditional knowledge databases, as the two approaches are not mutually exclusive. India's CSIR, which created and maintains the TKDL, asserts that the database has thwarted the grant of scores of patents in IP offices across the globe, although …

Securities Disclosure As Soundbite: The Case Of Ceo Pay Ratios, Steven A. Bank, George S. Georgiev Jan 2019

Securities Disclosure As Soundbite: The Case Of Ceo Pay Ratios, Steven A. Bank, George S. Georgiev

Faculty Articles

This Article analyzes the history, design, and effectiveness of the highly controversial CEO pay ratio disclosure rule, which went into effect in 2018. Based on a regulatory mandate contained in the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010, the rule requires public companies to disclose the ratio between CEO pay and median worker pay as part of their annual filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The seven-year rulemaking process was politically contentious and generated a level of public engagement that was virtually unprecedented in the long history of the SEC disclosure regime. The SEC sought to minimize compliance costs by providing …

A Review Of Equine Laminitis: Risk Factors And Predispositions, Molly C. Henion Jan 2019

A Review Of Equine Laminitis: Risk Factors And Predispositions, Molly C. Henion

Honors Theses and Capstones

Equine laminitis is a disease of the hoof characterized by inflammation or disruption of the sensitive and insensitive laminae located within the hoof. These structures are responsible for maintaining a secure connection between the third phalanx (P3) and the hoof wall. Damage to these laminae can weaken the attachment between the hoof wall and P3, causing separation and eventual rotation of P3. Equine laminitis can result from multiple triggers, but the most commonly seen cases of the disease are those which are related to endocrinopathy and metabolic related issues. This review will focus on determining the metabolic risk factors associated …

Malate Dehydrogenase Allele Frequencies In Honeybee Populations And Its Correlation With Temperature, Thitipan Meemongkolkiat Jan 2019

Malate Dehydrogenase Allele Frequencies In Honeybee Populations And Its Correlation With Temperature, Thitipan Meemongkolkiat

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Temperature is one of the major factors that affect on the variation in honeybee in term of DNA and protein variants. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the three structural variants of the cytosolic malate dehydrogenase (cMDH) protein of the honeybee can explain clinal variation in allele frequencies. To test the hypothesis that there is a molecular basis to the temperature-dependent fitness of cMDH variation, the enzymic activity was determined across a range of temperatures in vitro. The F and S alleles have higher activity and are less sensitive to high temperatures than the M allele. Next, …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research aimed to develop the blended bacterial cellulose (BC)/ alginate (A)/ gelatin (G) incorporating with curcumin (C) for wound dressing application. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy showed that the interaction among bacterial cellulose/alginate/gelatin curcumin molecules were only physical but not chemical intermolecular level. Water vapor and oxygen permeabilities of the fabricated films were close to commercially avaialbe wound dressings. Curcumin incorporation lowered fluid absorption ability, water vapor and oxygen permeabilities. In vitro culture of human keratinocytes, and human gingival fibroblasts evidenced that the fabricated composite films could promote cell proliferation. Curcumin-loaded films showed anticancer activity against human oral cancer …

Prediction Of Catalyst Bed Density And Simulation Of Glycerol Steam Reformer For Hydrogen Production, Vorathorn Charoensuk

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

A simple method was proposed to generate a rigid model and to predict the packing density of catalyst using Blender software. It is a free and open-source 3D creation suite animating catalyst pellets freely falling into a container. The effects of different catalyst shapes (sphere and cylinder) and sizes (2–5 mm) on the packing density of catalyst bed were investigated. It was found that the void fraction decreased with decreasing catalyst pellet diameter for all reactor diameters (18-50 mm). Moreover, the void fraction decreased with increasing reactor size for all catalyst shapes and sizes. The results also showed that the …

Microemulsion Based Soil Remediation Using Mixed Anionic And Extended Nonionic Surfactant, Virin Kittithammavong Jan 2019

Microemulsion Based Soil Remediation Using Mixed Anionic And Extended Nonionic Surfactant, Virin Kittithammavong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The anionic-nonionic mixed system has a synergistic effect on the microemulsion formation by a reduction of interfacial tension. The challenge of the mixed surfactant based on soil remediation is how to find the appropriate condition. This study aims to investigate the phase behaviors of the anionic-nonionic mixed systems and to formulate their hydrophilic-lipophilic deviation (HLD) equations. Then the mixed surfactant solutions are applied to determine the oil removal efficiency. The conventional anionic surfactants (i.e., sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dihexyl sulfosuccinate (SDHS), and sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT)) and the extended nonionic surfactants (i.e., alcohol ethoxylate series (AE(EOn) and alkyl polyglycol …
