Equality’S Understudies, Aziz Z. Huq
Equality’S Understudies, Aziz Z. Huq
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Our Republic these days is riven by divides about what equality demands of us as private and public actors. Consider just a few recent examples:
• Harvard University is challenged in federal court for preferring African-Americans over other racial minorities, especially Asian-Americans, in their admissions pool.1 Harvard’s flagship law review, meanwhile, faces its own suit over its preferment of minority candidates.2
• Virginia’s Governor Ralph Northam and its Attorney General Mark Herring are swept up into political controversy by news that both dressed in ‘blackface’ during their college or medical school days.3 The historical significance of ‘blackface’ …
Hippocampal Volumetry And Episodic Memory In Preterm Born Children, Dana Marie Anderson Mccall
Hippocampal Volumetry And Episodic Memory In Preterm Born Children, Dana Marie Anderson Mccall
Wayne State University Dissertations
Objective The hippocampus (Hc) is essential for memory and vulnerable to the sequelae of premature birth. Relationships between subcomponents of the Hc and memory performance have been documented in adults. Yet little is known about the generalization of these findings to young children, whether term or preterm-born. This tripartite investigation focused on Hc subregion and subfield volumes, a potential latent construct for episodic memory, and the relationship between Hc volume and memory performance across birth weight (BW) and gestational age (GA).
Participants and Methods Forty-eight children (20 preterm), ages 5-7, completed an MRI scan and several episodic memory tasks. An …
Immune Modulation By Amphiphilic Oligonucleotides, Chunsong Yu
Immune Modulation By Amphiphilic Oligonucleotides, Chunsong Yu
Wayne State University Dissertations
Immunotherapy is emerging as one of the most promising therapeutic strategies for cancer treatment in clinical practice. Immunotherapy leverages the host’s immune system to attack and kill tumor cells. Rationally-designed cancer vaccines are emerging as one of the powerful immunotherapies primarily because of the promise of inducing tumor antigen-specific immune responses. To improve immunogenicity of cancer vaccines, vaccine antigens are administered with vaccine adjuvants which can robustly activate innate immune system and subsequently lead to adaptive immune response. However, the major challenge of achieving significant therapeutic efficacy is lack of efficient targeted-delivery of vaccine components. By taking advantage of endogenous …
Carlisle Indian Boarding School Portraits: From The Nineteenth Century To Contemporary Art, Nina Leigh Fiorucci
Carlisle Indian Boarding School Portraits: From The Nineteenth Century To Contemporary Art, Nina Leigh Fiorucci
Wayne State University Theses
This essay examines how Carlisle Indian Boarding School portraits portray transformation in students and the aesthetic history that perception holds with portrait painting, the ideological use of student portraits as illustrations of assimilation, and the continued emotional weight those portraits carry in contemporary media. Formal and aesthetic choices by the official school photographer and propagandistic uses by the school’s founder determine the role of nineteen-century assimilationist and racist ideology in the commission and dissemination of CIBS student portraits. Additionally, the appearance of these images in contemporary media and art provide a continued analysis of CIBS portraits as visual representatives of …
Comparison Study Of Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms For Real Time Prediction Of Uav Behaviors, Brian Baity
Comparison Study Of Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms For Real Time Prediction Of Uav Behaviors, Brian Baity
Theses
An American scientific writer/critic of the mid-20th century, Joseph Wood Krutch, stated, “Technology made large populations possible: large populations now make technology indispensable.” Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become a vital part of society, evolving from solely military use to commercial and even personal day-to-day use. UAV application has grown for mobility on demand, increasing the number of UAVs in the sky. Consequently, more UAVs increases the possibility of aerial collisions, challenging the safety of passengers flying and bystanders on the ground. Understanding the behavior of UAVs and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in general, therefore, will decrease the possibility of …

This Is The Last Straw: Reducing Plastic Straw Usage On A College Campus, Rajalakshmi Somasundaram
Graduate Theses - Engineering Management
Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology developed by Motorola in the mid-1980’s to optimize processes. Six Sigma allows for a quantitative study of a process with the goal of improving the quality of the output of the process by removing the causes of defects and reducing variability in the process. The methodology has been applied in numerous industries, such as manufacturing, healthcare, and education. Statistically speaking, it drives a process towards six sigma by centering the process’s mean and decreasing its standard deviation so that the distance between its mean and nearest specification limit is six standard …
Surface Flow Measurements In The Ballona Wetlands Freshwater Marsh, Calvin Foss, Michele Romolini, E. Simso, Sarah Bruce-Eisen
Surface Flow Measurements In The Ballona Wetlands Freshwater Marsh, Calvin Foss, Michele Romolini, E. Simso, Sarah Bruce-Eisen
Center for Urban Resilience Research Posters
The Ballona Wetlands Freshwater Marsh is a 26-acre constructed wetland located in coastal Los Angeles, CA. The Marsh serves an important ecological function of capturing and filtering runoff from the surrounding urbanized area before it enters the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. Mosquito populations in the Marsh are monitored by Los Angeles County Vector Control to prevent public health risks. Knowledge of the areas in the Marsh with the least water movement, an indication of the highest probability of mosquito breeding, may help to maximize the efficiency with which the control is being exercised. Additionally, knowledge of the marsh hydrology will …

On The Relevance Of Cognitive Neuroscience For Community Of Inquiry, Mark Weinstein, Dan Fisherman
On The Relevance Of Cognitive Neuroscience For Community Of Inquiry, Mark Weinstein, Dan Fisherman
Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works
Community of inquiry is most often seen as a dialogical procedure for the cooperative development of reasonable approaches to knowledge and meaning. This reflects a deep commitment to normatively based reasoning that is pervasive in a wide range of approaches to critical thinking and argument, where the underlying theory of reasoning is logic driven, whether formal or informal. The commitment to normative reasoning is deeply historical reflecting the fundamental distinction between reason and emotion. Despite the deep roots of the distinction and its canonization in current educational thought contemporary cognitive neuroscience presents a fundamental challenge to the viability of the …
Linking Gut Permeability, Microbial Translocation And The Microbiome In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Pathogenesis, Elizabeth Ogunrinde
Linking Gut Permeability, Microbial Translocation And The Microbiome In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Pathogenesis, Elizabeth Ogunrinde
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Objective – Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by loss of tolerance to self-antigens and production of autoantibodies. Growing evidence suggests that autoimmune diseases may arise or worsen due to increased intestinal permeability allowing passage of antigens into the systemic circulation. Translocation of microbes or microbial components into the systemic circulation can result in consequences including alteration of microbiota composition and immune system activation. In SLE disease, the extent of intestinal permeability and microbial translocation and their effect on SLE disease pathogenesis is yet to be defined. We hypothesized that increased gut permeability resulting in …
Prescription Trends In Branded Versus Generic Glatiramer Acetate Utilization Among Insurers For The Treatment Of Multiple Sclerosis In The United States, Stephen G. Smith
Prescription Trends In Branded Versus Generic Glatiramer Acetate Utilization Among Insurers For The Treatment Of Multiple Sclerosis In The United States, Stephen G. Smith
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic condition managed by disease modifying pharmaceutical therapies (DMTs). Health care cost is increasing due to high prescription drug spending. The high cost of branded DMTs highlights the potential value of lower cost generic therapies. Using generic DMTs could reduce the spending in the prescription drug sector. Recently, generic glatiramer acetate (GA) that treats relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis has become available. Appropriate insurer policies and practices are imperative to promote the use and utilization of generics like GA. Notably, no study has specifically evaluated the differences in utilization uptake of branded vs generic GA …

A Decade's Tale: Consent Decrees And Police Use Of Disproportionate Excessive Force With Communities Of Color, Dasha J. Rhodes, David L. Robinson, Paul C. Archibald, Laurens Van Sluytman
Social Work Faculty Publications
According to the U.S. Department of Justice (US DOJ, 2016), African Americans have experienced disproportionate instances of police use of excessive force as a result of discriminatory practices and insufficient training. Officers are permitted to use appropriate force in specific situations; however, when force is excessive and deemed unnecessary, it then becomes an issue of concern. The U.S. Department of Justice was invited to investigate police departments that participated in the use of excessive force and a consent decree was developed with those departments to remedy the DOJ's findings. The researchers conducted a consent decree analysis examining government investigations of …

Developing A Culturally Responsive Assessment Model For Short-Term Study Abroad At An Urban Community College, Grace Pai, Katie Wilson
Developing A Culturally Responsive Assessment Model For Short-Term Study Abroad At An Urban Community College, Grace Pai, Katie Wilson
Publications and Research
The literature on assessing education abroad is dominated by studies using pre-/post-survey instruments to measure student growth across broad dimensions like global perspectives or intercultural competencies. Most studies also focus on study abroad programs in private, four-year or graduate schools. There is limited research assessing programs in community colleges serving underrepresented students, despite the increasing diversity of education abroad participants. This article addresses that gap, and even more important, illustrates the process of how an urban, Minority Serving Institution-designated community college designed a culturally responsive assessment framework—one that that combines quantitative analysis of surveys with qualitative analysis of student e-Portfolios— …

Central nervous system oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT) manifests as tonic-clonic seizures and is a limitation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), as well as of recreational and technical diving associated with elevated partial pressure of oxygen. A previous study showed that ketone ester (1,3-butanediol acetoacetate diester, KE) administration delayed latency to seizures (LS) in 3-month-old Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. This study explores the effect of exogenous ketone supplements in additional dosages and formulations on CNS-OT seizures in 18 months old SD rats, an age group correlating to human middle age. Ketogenic agents were given orally 60 min prior to exposure to hyperbaric oxygen …

Chicken Paprika And Tug Of War: The Romantic "Dream Song 4" By John Berryman, Patrick Connell
Chicken Paprika And Tug Of War: The Romantic "Dream Song 4" By John Berryman, Patrick Connell
The Criterion
Helen Vendler argues that John Berryman’s The Dream Songs synthesizes the Freudian Id and the Christian Conscience as personified by Henry and Mr. Bones respectively. Through a close reading, this essay seeks to analyze Vendler’s claim specifically within “Dream Song 4”, in which, the poet utilizes a trope from American minstrelsy to depict the lustful thoughts of a man, presumably Berryman himself, dining at an upscale restaurant. The two speakers of the poem personify and divide his mind and in keeping with the vaudeville performances Berryman draws from, Henry behaves with erratic irrationality, curbed only by the reason of his …

Music As An Expression Of Traumatic Pasts And Conflicting Futures, Nina Masin-Moyer
The Criterion
Chad Abushanab’s “On the Dred Ranch Road Just off 283” and Emily Dickinson’s “Better—Than Music!” use their poetic forms to express the idea of music as being representative of each of their speakers’ spectrum of experiences and troubles. Despite the two poems being separated by hundreds of years and completely different life experiences, both speakers use the premise of music to establish their troubled pasts. The two poems begin to diverge when they also use music as a means of conveying their expectations for the future. Abushanab’s speaker laments his father’s alcoholism and the speaker has convinced himself the he …

Uridine Promotes Neurite Outgrowth In Neuro2a Cells, Jacquelyn Spathies
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's are the main causes of age-related dementia. These diseases can be due to neuronal cell death and/or impairment of neurite outgrowth. Giant oyster mushroom (GOM), Pleurotus giganteus, is used as a nootropic to improve cognitive function. GOM can also be used to prevent the onset of dementia. The underlying mechanism behind the medicinal property of GOM is unclear. Previous studies have shown that GOM has a high concentration of uridine. In this study, I examined the effects of uridine on neurite outgrowth in the Neuro-2a (N2a) neuroblastoma cell line. We also examined …

Exploration Of Sonic Hedgehog Gene Expression In Fathead Minnows (Pimephales Promelas), Brooke Renee Greiner
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Pollutants, as a result of wastewater treatments, have been shown to have negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems. To better understand the possible consequences caused by effluents on ecosystems, it is important to examine ecotoxicology data. One of the most commonly used species for water quality testing is the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas. Ecotoxicology can then be taken one step further to understand the effects of pollutants on a molecular level. Previous research had identified effluents as causes for abnormal minnow fin morphology. In order to collect additional data on development, tanks with fathead minnows were placed at the Charleston …
