Melatonin Signaling A Key Regulator Of Glucose Homeostasis And Energy Metabolism, Sharon Owino, Daniella D.C. Buonfiglio, Cynthia Tchio, Gianluca Tosini Jan 2019

Melatonin Signaling A Key Regulator Of Glucose Homeostasis And Energy Metabolism, Sharon Owino, Daniella D.C. Buonfiglio, Cynthia Tchio, Gianluca Tosini

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Melatonin, a hormone synthesized by both the pineal gland and retina, functions as an important modulator of a number of physiological functions. In addition to its rather well-established roles in the regulation of circadian rhythms, sleep, and reproduction, melatonin has also been identified as an important regulator of glucose metabolism. Recent genomic studies have also shown that disruption of melatonin receptors signaling may contribute to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, although the exact mechanisms underlying its action remain unclear. Additionally, a large number of animal studies have highlighted a role for melatonin in the regulation of both glucose metabolism …

Incorporating Climate Change Refugia Into Climate Adaptation In The Acadia National Park Region, Jennifer Smetzer, Toni Lyn Morelli Jan 2019

Incorporating Climate Change Refugia Into Climate Adaptation In The Acadia National Park Region, Jennifer Smetzer, Toni Lyn Morelli

Second Century Stewardship Refugia Products

Climate change is predicted to have significant impacts on New England’s biodiversity. If emissions continue unabated, mean global temperature is predicted to rise by 3-5 ºC by the end of the century, and well beyond the range of natural variability. Changes are already evident in Acadia National Park (ACAD). Between 1895 and 2010, annual precipitation significantly increased in ACAD by 16% and temperatures by 0.8 ºC; the rate of temperature increase in the park is expected to be 3-6 times greater by 2100, particularly in inland portions. Identifying climate change refugia for representative species can provide valuable information for adapting …

The Role Of Klp-4 In Regulating Cholinergic Signaling In Vivo, Catherine Deuchler Jan 2019

The Role Of Klp-4 In Regulating Cholinergic Signaling In Vivo, Catherine Deuchler

Honors Program Theses

Cellular trafficking is dominated by the use of motor proteins trafficking cargo along the microtubules that make up the cellular cytoskeleton. Polarity within these cells controls the direction of the trafficking, and the cargo consists of organelles, new proteins, neurotransmitters, etc.. Motor proteins differ in the cargo they carry, the direction that they move, as well as the rate and distance that they can travel. The trafficking of neurotransmitters occurs along neurons, highly polarized cells, and this research focuses on neuronal trafficking as a method of controlling the release and degradation of acetylcholine and thus regulating the signals that they …

Identification Of Proteins Interacting With Zebrafish Miro Orthologs In The Yeast Two-Hybrid System, Yiran Tao Jan 2019

Identification Of Proteins Interacting With Zebrafish Miro Orthologs In The Yeast Two-Hybrid System, Yiran Tao

Honors Program Theses

The motility of mitochondria is required for providing energy and maintaining basic cellular functions in neurons. Mitochondrial Rho GTPase (Miro) is an essential component of the mitochondrial trafficking machinery, a protein complex that anchors mitochondria to the microtubule motor protein for long-distance transport. As a protein localizing to the mitochondrial outer membrane, Miro regulates the morphology and the motility of mitochondria. Upon mitochondrial depolarization, the PINK1/Parkin pathway is activated to arrest mitochondrial movement by targeting Miro for phosphorylation and ubiquitination in a calcium-sensitive manner. However, it remains unclear what effects the PINK1-dependent phosphorylation has on the structure and binding properties …

Car T Cells As A Patentable Therapeutic, Mckenzie List Jan 2019

Car T Cells As A Patentable Therapeutic, Mckenzie List

Honors Program Theses

The development of a therapeutic to treat a particular disease is a complicated process that incorporates numerous components such as drug discovery, clinical trials, FDA approval and patentability. In the last two decades, cancer research and development has shifted from identifying small molecule therapeutic agents to focusing research on a novel approach designated as immunotherapy. Today, immunotherapy has progressed from a twentieth century scientific theory into an innovative treatment to cancer. In particular, CAR T cells have demonstrated therapeutic properties for certain types of cancers, but these living cells are not compatible with the traditional therapeutic model. First, the drug …

The Use Of State-Sponsored Torture For National Security: A Debate On The Permissibility Of Torture In The Name Of Public Safety, Matthew Fisher Jan 2019

The Use Of State-Sponsored Torture For National Security: A Debate On The Permissibility Of Torture In The Name Of Public Safety, Matthew Fisher

Honors Program Theses

Can the United States government’s use of state-sponsored torture ever be justified for national security purposes? This question is a taboo subject that frequently elicits passionate responses from individuals who argue both for and against its use in upholding national security. This vigorous debate challenges moral, ethical, legal, and even pragmatic ideals in seeking to determine if state use of torture can ever be a part of America’s national security strategy. These considerations, and others, have inspired this research project and the specific research question which seeks to determine whether the United States government’s use of state-sponsored torture for national …

Inevitably Dying: The Role Of Ideological Legacy-Derived Death Anxieties In Subverting Mortality Salience, Christina Fuleihan Jan 2019

Inevitably Dying: The Role Of Ideological Legacy-Derived Death Anxieties In Subverting Mortality Salience, Christina Fuleihan

Honors Program Theses

Existential debates – regarding life, death, and the states which potentially succeed existence – have widespread spiritual and ethical implications for general society. Rather than aimlessly questioning the metaphysical value of death on life, there are clear bioethical applications to exploring exaggerated human death anxieties. These fears are unique to our species and have wide-spread societal repercussions. By and large, discomfort with the notion of mortality permeates unequivocally throughout our species’ histories. We become our own worst enemies when we fail to admit and confront the inevitability of death. The lack of mortality salience encouraged by our trepidations fuels an …

Alkylaminophenol Induces G1/S Phase Cell Cycle Arrest In Glioblastoma Cells Through P53 And Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Signaling Pathway., Phuong Doan, Aliyu Musa, Nuno R Candeias, Frank Emmert-Streib, Olli Yli-Harja, Meenakshisundaram Kandhavelu

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common type of malignant brain tumor in adults. We show here that small molecule 2-[(3,4-dihydroquinolin-1(2H)-yl)(p-tolyl)methyl]phenol (THTMP), a potential anticancer agent, increases the human glioblastoma cell death. Its mechanism of action and the interaction of selective signaling pathways remain elusive. Three structurally related phenolic compounds were tested in multiple glioma cell lines in which the potential activity of the compound, THTMP, was further validated and characterized. Upon prolonged exposer to THTMP, all glioma cell lines undergo p53 and cyclin-dependent kinase mediated cell death with the IC

Reverting Immune Suppression To Enhance Cancer Immunotherapy., Bella S Guerrouahen, Cristina Maccalli, Chiara Cugno, Sergio Rutella, Emmanuel T Akporiaye

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Tumors employ strategies to escape immune control. The principle aim of most cancer immunotherapies is to restore effective immune surveillance. Among the different processes regulating immune escape, tumor microenvironment-associated soluble factors, and/or cell surface-bound molecules are mostly responsible for dysfunctional activity of tumor-specific CD8

Rosana Paulino And The Art Of Refazimento: Reconfigurations Of The Black Female Body In The Land Of Racial Democracy, Flávia Santos De Araújo Jan 2019

Rosana Paulino And The Art Of Refazimento: Reconfigurations Of The Black Female Body In The Land Of Racial Democracy, Flávia Santos De Araújo

Africana Studies: Faculty Publications

This essay analyzes the historical and aesthetic significance of the visual art project Assentamento(s) (2012-2013) by Rosana Paulino. Her work reinscribes the black female body into the historical narrative of Brazil, complicating long-established notions of “Brazilianness”. By using art techniques and materials that combine lithography, digital printing, drawing, sewing, video, and sculpting, Paulino develops a multi-layered artistic assembly that she describes as a process of refazimento (“remaking”). Paulino pushes the boundaries of the historical archives, highlighting both the struggles and agency of black women within Brazilian society. I argue that, as a contemporary black woman visual artist, Paulino engages in …

Anxiety-Like Behavior In Adolescent Rats Following Maternal Separation And Chronic Cocaine Exposure, Jonathan Handy

Behavioral Neuroscience Honors Papers

Cocaine is one of the most widely used illicit substances in the world and has an addiction rate comparable to opioids. Early Life Stress (ELS) has been shown to have a profound influence on the development of an individual, showing strong correlations to the development of psychiatric disorders and psychostimulant abuse. Adolescents in particular are at a high risk for the abuse of psychostimulants such as cocaine. Previous studies have individually described the correlation between cocaine addiction and anxiety, and the correlation between ELS and cocaine addiction. Rats who have experienced some form of ELS have shown a higher levels …

Hazing In “White” Sororities: Explanations At The Organizational-Level, Gregory S. Parks, Sarah J. Spangenburg Jan 2019

Hazing In “White” Sororities: Explanations At The Organizational-Level, Gregory S. Parks, Sarah J. Spangenburg

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Hazing has been a persistent issue in a variety of contexts, institutions, and organizations. In forty-four states, legislatures have passed anti-hazing statutes. However, the law, as a whole, has been insufficient to curtail hazing. This Article analyzes this phenomenon by looking through the lens of historically white-predominant sororities. Among the broad range of organizational dynamic, at play are the pervasive cognitive biases among members. Further, sororities face many challenges to integrating new and better information across the membership. Lastly, the Article analyzes a range of organizational dynamics that play a role in sorority members’ collective decision-making processes.

The Purple Plague: Effect Of High Intensity Grazing Post Fire On Purple Threeawn Cover And Reproductive Effort And Prairie Dog Responses, Justin Roemer

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Purple threeawn (Aristida purpurea Nutt.) is a native warm-season bunchgrass found in western Kansas on The Nature Conservancy’s Smoky Valley Ranch and across rangelands of western North America. Upon reaching maturity, grazing/clipping pressure decreases for this bunchgrass due to poor forage quality and extreme unpalatability for cattle (Bos taurus) and Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). This decrease in grazing/clipping has led to development of near monocultures which cause negative impacts to the prairie ecosystem including decreases in rangeland quality and suitable habitat for prairie dogs, a keystone species. This decrease in prairie dog habitat …

Are Autonomous Entities Possible?, Shawn Bayern Jan 2019

Are Autonomous Entities Possible?, Shawn Bayern

Scholarly Publications

Over the last few years, I have demonstrated how modern business-entity statutes, particularly LLC statutes, can give software the basic capabilities of legal personhood, such as the ability to enter contracts or own property. Not surprisingly, this idea has been met with some resistance. This Essay responds to one kind of descriptive objection to my arguments: That courts will find some way to prevent the results I describe either because my reading of the business-entity statutes would take us too far outside our legal experience, or because courts will be afraid that robots will take over the world, or because …

Subcellular Compartmentalization Of Pkm2 Identifies Anti-Pkm2 Therapy Response In Vitro And In Vivo Mouse Model Of Human Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer., Akiko Suzuki, Sachin Puri, Pamela Leland, Ankit Puri, Tarsem Moudgil, Bernard A Fox, Raj K Puri, Bharat H Joshi

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) is an alternatively spliced variant, which mediates the conversion of glucose to lactate in cancer cells under normoxic conditions, known as the Warburg effect. Previously, we demonstrated that PKM2 is one of 97 genes that are overexpressed in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines. Herein, we demonstrate a novel role of subcellular PKM2 expression as a biomarker of therapeutic response after targeting this gene by shRNA or small molecule inhibitor (SMI) of PKM2 enzyme activity in vitro and in vivo. We examined two established lung cancer cell lines, nine patients derived NSCLC and three normal lung …

America’s National Parks are rich with cultural history, flora, fauna and some of nature’s most impressive landscapes. As climate change continues to accelerate, these parks and their cultural and natural resources are being threatened. In this project, I will present a colorful, informational booklet that concentrates on 4 specific parks: Yellowstone National Park, National Park of American Samoa, Glacier Bay National Park and Mesa Verde National Park. I will focus on the archaeology and cultural significance of these parks, while also examining the ways that climate change is putting these, and other associated assets of the parks, at risk. I …

Animal Agriculture And Climate Change, Lewis Bollard Jan 2019

Animal Agriculture And Climate Change, Lewis Bollard

General – Farm Animal Issues

Earlier this year the prestigious EAT-Lancet Commission called on the world to eat less meat to slow climate change. Three other reports in the last year echoed that message, including two published in Science and Nature, and one produced in partnership with two UN agencies and the World Bank. Even the normally cautious Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change noted in its October report the “increasing agreement that overall emissions from food systems could be reduced by targeting the demand for meat and other livestock products.” This marks a major change. The climate movement long ignored the inconvenient truth of meat’s …

Patellar Tendon Morphology In Trans-Tibial Amputees Utilizing A Prosthesis With A Patellar-Tendonbearing Feature, Kai-Yu Ho, Michelle Harty, Jessica Kellogg, Kelly Teter, Szu-Ping Lee, Yu-Jen Chang, Gregory Bashford

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

A patellar-tendon-bearing (PTB) bar is a common design feature used in the socket of trans-tibial prostheses to place load on the pressure-tolerant tissue. As the patellar tendon in the residual limb is subjected to the perpendicular compressive force not commonly experienced in normal tendons, it is possible for tendon degeneration to occur over time. The purpose of this study was to compare patellar tendon morphology and neovascularity between the residual and intact limbs in trans-tibial amputees and healthy controls. Fifteen unilateral trans-tibial amputees who utilized a prosthesis with a PTB feature and 15 age- and sex- matched controls participated. Sonography …

Wallaceward The American Literature Survey Course Takes Its Way, Ralph Clare Jan 2019

Wallaceward The American Literature Survey Course Takes Its Way, Ralph Clare

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

Finding a comfortable fit for David Foster Wallace's work in the American literature survey is a challenge that raises a host of questions regarding Wallace and American literature itself. Wallace criticism has tended to situate his oeuvre in relation to postmodernism in general and, more specifically, to postmodern metafiction. This is an important critical task, to be sure. Like many, I have taught Wallace's stories, essays, and novels in an array of courses, including twentieth-century American literature, postmodernist literature, and the single author course, all formats in which I had a luxurious amount of time to get students acquainted with …

Decoding Water Law: Ten Areas Of Texas Water Law Every Ag Lawyer Should Know, Jason T. Hill, Victoria Rose Messer Jan 2019

Decoding Water Law: Ten Areas Of Texas Water Law Every Ag Lawyer Should Know, Jason T. Hill, Victoria Rose Messer

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Texas water law is not a model of clarity. As a body of law, it is riddled with jargon, double-meaning, and esoteric context that can sometimes read and work like a Rube Goldberg device. Landowners not trained in the dark arts of Texas water rights and regulation are often (rightfully) frustrated with attempts to understand, exercise, market, and simply explain one of the most important property rights in Texas agriculture.

Fear not. While not a categorical truth, much of Texas’ water law can be translated into a language that is helpful to those involved in Texas agriculture. The authors give …
