Reconstructing Greek Identity And Exploring The Self: The Early Works Of Yiannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989), Anna Wichmann
Reconstructing Greek Identity And Exploring The Self: The Early Works Of Yiannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989), Anna Wichmann
Theses & ETDs
While the early works of Yiannis Tsarouchis were painted in the style of Matisse, it is clear that Tsarouchis cannot be framed as “the Greek Matisse,” or as an artist who simply wished to copy Matisse. By establishing his artistic development before encountering Matisse’s work, and charting the deliberate alterations he made to Matisse’s model, I will show that Tsarouchis used Matisse’s work as a mode through which to explore Greek identity as syncretic and multilayered. Greekness, to Tsarouchis, contains visible layers of historical and cultural periods on the same plane. These individual layers maintain their distinction between each other …
Taking Off The Mask: Superheroism And Identity, Rachel Reimer
Taking Off The Mask: Superheroism And Identity, Rachel Reimer
Theses & ETDs
Since the invention of Superman in 1939, comic books have majorly influenced and have been influenced by the moral ideals of social and political movements. This study is designed to better understand the psychological impact of superheroes on the avid consumer via two routes. Through the theoretical lens of parasocial interaction, superheroes are viewed as a partner within a one-sided social exchange. Alternatively, the theory of identification depicts superheroes as a model for emulation. Using a survey method, participants were asked a series of questions regarding both parasocial and identification behaviors with superhero characters, as well as demographics information and …
Water With Standing: A Comparative Analysis Of The Legal Personalities Of Lake Erie And Te Awa Tupua, Devin Johnson Hogan
Water With Standing: A Comparative Analysis Of The Legal Personalities Of Lake Erie And Te Awa Tupua, Devin Johnson Hogan
Theses & ETDs
Human survival is dependent on a functioning environment to support our basic requirements of life. The estimated value of Earth’s ecosystem services is $125 trillion annually, but consistent degradation is limiting the ability of the environment to perform ecosystem services. The significant environmental impacts of human activity necessitate a new approach to environmental law, in which nature is granted basic rights to exist without pollution or destruction. The Rights of Nature movement calls for a shift in the relationship between ecology and law that acknowledges the interdependence of human and natural communities. In 2017, New Zealand passed the Te Awa …
Anime Made Me Gay And Trans: Interaction, Formation, And Perceptions Of Queer And Anime Fan Identity, Gloria Pritchard
Anime Made Me Gay And Trans: Interaction, Formation, And Perceptions Of Queer And Anime Fan Identity, Gloria Pritchard
Theses & ETDs
GSMs (Gender and Sexual Minorities) continue to come out of the closet in droves, largely spearheaded by the young adult population, yet are still heavily discriminated against. For this reason, it is important to explore different avenues in which the GSM identity formation process can be aided through interpersonal and community support. The anime community is observed as a potential haven for GSMs in which they might receive social support from fellow anime fans and have access to more positive media representations of GSMs. Two studies were conducted to investigate the interaction between anime fan identity and queer identity. Study …
Biometrics And Job Stress, Zachary L. Rahner
Biometrics And Job Stress, Zachary L. Rahner
Theses & ETDs
This study explores Residential Advisors' sympathetic nervous system (SNS) reactivity during an acute stress task and its relation to occupational outcomes. Specifically, this study assessed whether individuals’ SNS reactivity, measured using skin conductance and heart rate, correlates with subjective job stress and coworkers' evaluations of a participant's ability to manage stress, respond to emergencies, and make the right decisions. Although there were no statistically significant results, SNS activation appears to be practically associated with job stress and coworker evaluations. A greater change in heart rate was practically correlated with more positive coworker evaluations, and a greater change in skin conductance …
The Scientific Method In The Formulation Of Physics, Jasper Fay
The Scientific Method In The Formulation Of Physics, Jasper Fay
Theses & ETDs
This thesis is an inquiry into the Scientific Method, as it has been employed in the historical development of physics. The goals are to determine the course followed by physics as a science in the discovery and formulation of its theories, to identify the methodological principles and philosophical precepts at work in its evolution from ancient to modern times, and to present the theoretic history of this particular science, in such a way that the general scientific method is embodied in the exhibition. My strategy consists in examining primary sources—i.e. works of natural philosophy by scientists who therein contributed to …
Exploration Of Molecular Basis For Rebound Weight Gain In Caenorhabditis Elegans., Sarah Nosacka
Exploration Of Molecular Basis For Rebound Weight Gain In Caenorhabditis Elegans., Sarah Nosacka
Theses & ETDs
In the midst of the obesity epidemic, a broad understanding of metabolic conditions is necessary for proper care of obese and overweight individuals. Rebound weight gain, that which follows a period of significant weight loss, is an adaptive symptom which minimizes the utility of caloric deficit as a long-term treatment of obesity. Rebound weight gain is documented in humans and mice, and mice have been found with increased levels of a fat-synthesis gene, acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC, pod- 2), in response to starvation and refeeding. In the present study, the model organism, Caenorhabditis elegans, was age-matched with hypochlorite treatment, starved …

Investigating The Effects Of Fructose, Stevia, And Aspartame On The Lifespan And Body Fat Content Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Kara Grissom
Theses & ETDs
The consumption of sugar has increased greatly over the last few decades, and is correlated with obesity and several major diseases. While fructose is a natural sugar, it is the main component in high fructose corn syrup which has been targeted as an offender in the obesity epidemic in recent years. Aspartame, an artificial sweetener, has over 100 studies that support its safety however its efficacy in use for diabetics is still questioned. Stevia is a relatively new sweetener that comes from a plant in the form of steviol glycosides, however the leaf and crude extract safety have not been …

Theses & ETDs
This thesis reviewed the relationship between usage of online Facebook support groups for siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities and participant living arrangement in relation to their siblings, as well as levels of Depression, Anxiety and Stress. The current study hypothesized that participants who live with their sibling would have an increased usage of the Facebook page(s) for emotional and social support, along with an overall increased usage in comparison to their counterparts who live away from their sibling. The current study also predicted that participants who live with their siblings would have higher Depression, Anxiety, and Stress scores than …
The United Fissure: Temporality And Projection In The Poetics Of Robert Creeley And Charles Olson, Jacquelyn Grace Harrison
The United Fissure: Temporality And Projection In The Poetics Of Robert Creeley And Charles Olson, Jacquelyn Grace Harrison
Theses & ETDs
As poets and as figures in the literary community, Charles Olson and Robert Creeley greatly influenced the trajectory of technical and stylistic development of the mid-20th century. Olson’s pamphlet Projective Verse is widely referenced by poets as means of evaluating and developing their work, and Creeley’s sentiment about content as an extension of form has become pervasive in the field. This study approaches these figures through the temporal lens and attempts to locate the extents to which each poet is in temporal motion or evading it. Although the conclusion is that neither poet fully occupies either a temporal or atemporal …
“This Is Who We Are, This Is Who I Am” Exploring Queerness In Cartoons Through Steven Universe, Roxanne Seraphina Kennedy
“This Is Who We Are, This Is Who I Am” Exploring Queerness In Cartoons Through Steven Universe, Roxanne Seraphina Kennedy
Theses & ETDs
Cartoons offer significant teaching opportunities in the way they discuss and normalize identities. This thesis examines queer gender and sexual content in cartoons as examples of the power of positive representation, specifically looking at Cartoon Network’s popular animated series Steven Universe. Over the last several decades, cartoons as a genre have gone through notable thematic shifts in order to address public awareness of gender and sexuality. Contemporary animation is currently seeing a queer renaissance, where shows explicitly discuss and represent LGBTQ+ identities in their stories. In order to better understand how Steven Universe accomplishes this, I focus on the ways …
Non-Conformative Gender Expression In Manga, Visual Arts, And Fashion In Modern Japan, Hannah Oberlin
Non-Conformative Gender Expression In Manga, Visual Arts, And Fashion In Modern Japan, Hannah Oberlin
Theses & ETDs
This thesis will explore how gender non-conforming individuals in Japan live their lives through means of opposition to societal expectations and desire for the removal of (gendered) constraints. Through the lenses of Japanese manga, visual arts, and fashion, I will examine the history of Japan’s gender roles, how the country as a whole has been affected by gendered power dynamics, and what the current social environment is for people who do not conform to modern expectations of what gender should and should not look like. Therefore, this study will yield new understandings of how gender is conceived of in Japan, …
Who’S Next To You: Perceived Emotional Closeness As A Predictor Of Response To Product Advertisements, Bianca Persechino
Who’S Next To You: Perceived Emotional Closeness As A Predictor Of Response To Product Advertisements, Bianca Persechino
Theses & ETDs
It is established that the social context of viewers affects the way an advertisement is received. The present study explores how the perceived emotional closeness between viewers affects their likelihood to change their attitude towards the product and their desire/intent to purchase the product. This was tested by having paired participants watch a show with ads and answer related questions. Results showed no significant relationship between closeness and likelihood to desire or intend to purchase the product or likelihood to change their attitude towards the product. There was a significant difference between the average reported closeness according to relationship type …
"I’M Sorry I Got Us Lost": Over The Garden Wall, Adaptation, And Fairytale Retellings In Post-Golden Age Disney Animation, Araya Hope Barnes
"I’M Sorry I Got Us Lost": Over The Garden Wall, Adaptation, And Fairytale Retellings In Post-Golden Age Disney Animation, Araya Hope Barnes
Theses & ETDs
Retellings allow for new ideas to be forged from old gems. In Cartoon Network's 2014 miniseries Over the Garden Wall, modern ideas of growing up and sibling relationships are depicted through new imaginings of classic folk and fairytales. In this thesis, I show the ways Garden Wall's style of retelling is relevant and necessary for a modern young audience and as a display of modern American cultures and values. While films such as The Wizard of Oz and classics by Disney Studios (films discussed here will be Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and Tangled due to their spacing across different …
Dismantling Digital First: An Ethnographic Study Of The Importance Of Community Engagement For Local Publications, Michala Anne Head
Dismantling Digital First: An Ethnographic Study Of The Importance Of Community Engagement For Local Publications, Michala Anne Head
Theses & ETDs
The objective of this thesis was to provide a comprehensive look at local media and journalism trends in 2018 through ethnographic study of a local, lifestyle magazine. With the Internet came the new ability to communicate directly with others online. This disrupted multiple streams of revenue for traditional print publications, as this development rendered classified postings and print advertising obsolete. The circulation of information online also unfathomably increased competition for the attention of readers. My thesis research used ethnographic methods to produce qualitative findings on the strategies employed by SRQ , a local publication in Sarasota, Florida, to stay afloat …
Cauliflower Communities: A Comparative Analysis Of Bacterial Endophytes Within Differentiating Tissues Of Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis, Hanah Chaudry
Theses & ETDs
Fungal and bacterial endophytes live within the tissue of every plant and are beneficial to their hosts in many ways. Endophytic presence can affect plant morphology, metabolism and gene expression leading to advantages like increased abiotic stress tolerance, disease resistance and pest deterrence. Endophytic communities, which are thought to have evolved from Rhizosphere bacteria, have differing compositions in different tissues (Card et al. , 2015, (Liu et al., 2013) ). However, the development of this diversity is not well studied. The curd of cauliflower ( Brassica oleracea var. Botrytis), was used for tissue culturing because of its ability to differentiate …
Becoming Over Being In Michelangelo’S Madonnas: The Reception Of His Unfinished Sculptures, Mia Reich
Becoming Over Being In Michelangelo’S Madonnas: The Reception Of His Unfinished Sculptures, Mia Reich
Theses & ETDs
The Italian Renaissance is considered to be the moment where the concept of artistic style was first created. There emerged a shift in attitude toward art: the creative process came to be valued as much as the material product. Concrete evidence of this shift is seen in the appreciation and positive reception of unfinished artwork- more specifically, the unfinished work of Michelangelo Buonarroti. The provenance of the incomplete Pitti Tondo and Taddei Tondo prove them to have been just as successful on their own terms as Michelangelo’s pristinely polished Vatican Pietà. The examination of these works together will document two …
“Our Father, Our King”: The Creators Of Artificial Life In Novels Featuring Artificial Intelligence, Golems, And Frankenstein’S Creature, Emily Mulholland
“Our Father, Our King”: The Creators Of Artificial Life In Novels Featuring Artificial Intelligence, Golems, And Frankenstein’S Creature, Emily Mulholland
Theses & ETDs
In my thesis I explore the artificial creation of life in literature through novels featuring golems, artificial intelligence, and the Creature of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I trace these figures through The Golem and the Wondrous Deeds of the Maharal of Prague by Yudl Rosenberg, The Puttermesser Papers by Cynthia Ozick, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and He, She, and It by Marge Piercy. I explore the relationship between a human Creator and their nonhuman Creation in each text. This raises religious questions of origins, as well as ethical questions regarding how humanity is defined. I argue that the assumption of the …
How To Make Gold And Other Impossible Things: Examining Alchemy In Greco-Roman Egypt, Virginia Lewis
How To Make Gold And Other Impossible Things: Examining Alchemy In Greco-Roman Egypt, Virginia Lewis
Theses & ETDs
How to Make Gold and Other Impossible Things: Examining Alchemy in Greco-Roman Egypt seeks to understand alchemy in Greco-Roman Egypt through an examination of the historical context of the alchemists and alchemical philosophy as well as translations of alchemical texts. The process also involved performing chemistry experiments in order to understand further the types of experiments ancient alchemists could have performed and the types of reactions they may have observed, expanding the understanding of ancient alchemy even further.
Comparative Effects Of Acute Low And High-Toxin Red Tide (Karenia Brevis Wilson) Exposure On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica Gmelin) Feeding Response, Daniel Collins Niedospial
Comparative Effects Of Acute Low And High-Toxin Red Tide (Karenia Brevis Wilson) Exposure On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica Gmelin) Feeding Response, Daniel Collins Niedospial
Theses & ETDs
Red Tide causes extensive ecological and economic damage through massive marine deaths, water quality shifts and human illness. A contributor to the health of coastal ecosystems and economies, it’s important to understand how the Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin) responds to red tide and its toxins. Studies on the chronic effects of Karenia brevis exposure on bivalve mollusks are increasing, but few have explored its short-term effects on Eastern Oyster feeding response. In this study, Eastern Oysters were fed Tetraselmis impellucida and Isochrysis galbana, starved for 48 hours, and exposed to Karenia brevis Low-Toxin and High-Toxin Wilson in a static …
A Musician Muses On Musical Amusements As The Mood Suits Her, Jacqueline Christie
A Musician Muses On Musical Amusements As The Mood Suits Her, Jacqueline Christie
Theses & ETDs
The following pages are part of an experimental multimedia art project with the general theme of “things that one might encounter in musical academia.” This part of the project works like a multi-movement composition, each section having a different character but containing and developing some shared themes. The dominant theme is “Spinning Gears,” or hagurama, which is an homage to Akutagawa Ryūnosuke’s semiautobiographical story of the same name (歯車). It follows the protagonist through his haunting polyglottic descent into madness, characterized by his intermittent hallucinations of “a set of translucent spinning gears.”1
Resetting The Connection: Legal Personhood And Decolonization In Aotearoa New Zealand, Sarah Kelly
Resetting The Connection: Legal Personhood And Decolonization In Aotearoa New Zealand, Sarah Kelly
Theses & ETDs
Exploitation and pollution of the environment has led some to search for a better way to protect the environment in law. In its current form, the majority of Western environmental policy only considers human interests. This shortcoming has been confronted in a few notable cases around the world where law has granted nature itself with “all the rights, powers, duties, and liabilities of a legal person.” Synthesizing philosophical, historical, ethnographic, and legal sources, this thesis examines how the “rights of nature” movement provides an avenue for decolonization and the legitimization of indigenous worldviews in mainstream policy. Two New Zealand examples …
The Story Of Lies: Preparation Effects And Prosocial Deception, Renbourn Chock
The Story Of Lies: Preparation Effects And Prosocial Deception, Renbourn Chock
Theses & ETDs
Lies are stories that are told in order to deceive their target, but as stories they must be prepared beforehand. If prepared stories can be distinguished from unprepared stories, it may be possible to distinguish certain lies from truths. In a novel study design, 30 undergraduate participants told one self-serving lie, one unprepared truth, and one prosocial lie. These stories were analyzed for evidence of preparation. The preparation effects measured were ending type and inclusion of additional details. Participants were also asked to report the amount of time spent preparing their lies. Results suggested that people spend more time preparing …

In Sleeping Dogs, players become Wei Shen, an undercover cop combating the triad organizations of Hong Kong. Players explore a condensed version of the city as they navigate through the criminal underworld and experience Wei’s journey. The developers’ vision of what Hong Kong means as an identity, place, and culture is illustrated through the design of the environment, structure of the narrative, and creative choices. Although created for leisure purpose, …
The Nutcracker Queen: An Analysis Of Drosselmeyer And Marie In E.T.A. Hoffmann’S The Nutcracker And The Mouse King, Diana Barroeta
The Nutcracker Queen: An Analysis Of Drosselmeyer And Marie In E.T.A. Hoffmann’S The Nutcracker And The Mouse King, Diana Barroeta
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis I will dive into E.T.A Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and The Mouse King. analyze the character of Marie and Drosselmeyer using Propp’s morphology of folktale as a reference. In order to see the bigger picture and deepen the level of understanding of the story, the introduction offers background information on the author, the place the story was written and the literary movement it was born into. I divided each chapter into sections containing each other character types Marie and Drosselmeyer represented and included evidence to show how multidimensional they both are, and how complicated each of their relationships …
Robots ‘Я’ Us What Science Fiction Tells Us About Gender, Race, And Humanness, Bethany Wilson
Robots ‘Я’ Us What Science Fiction Tells Us About Gender, Race, And Humanness, Bethany Wilson
Theses & ETDs
Narratives centering on human contact with the “other”—aliens, monsters, and robots—are prevalent in science fiction. While these narratives encourage us to consider the physical and ethical boundaries of humanness, they also problematically recenter the experiences and perceptions of men—of White men—as those of a non-existent “neutral” human being. In this thesis, I analyze representations of robotic beings in science fiction to deconstruct Western logics of oppression and expose the constructed nature of the category “human.” In particular, I focus on the limitations of the binary logic of “self” as opposed to “other” in regard to race and gender. I begin …
Extending Hanson's Thoughts On Observation, Shane Archuleta
Extending Hanson's Thoughts On Observation, Shane Archuleta
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I argue that observation is a practically engaged, on-going, evaluative endeavour. In order to do so, I draw from Hanson’s seminal essay “Observation”, identifying the factors which inform observation that consequently lead to thinking of observation as an experience, rather than as a product/output. This is followed by a thorough exploration of an everyday example of observation. Finally, I expose the evaluative dimensions of observation. One of the main aims of this thesis is to contribute to critiques against hard-minded empiricist approaches to observation and the world.
“Altering The Earth To Fit Vera” Analyzing Sustainable Fashion Supply Chain Management, Iyanu O. Corniel

While clothing is an integral part of our daily lives, it’s current mode of production pose a serious threat to the environment. Current fashion production practices, named fast fashion, has evolved in the past few decades and has brought with it some economic benefits but considerable environmental challenges. The need for sustainable fashion, otherwise known a slow fashion practices have arisen. Using a qualitative approach to study design, this research sought to identify best practices in the management of supply chains in the top four sustainable fashion brands. Primary and secondary source information regarding sustainable practices and economic performance was …
Orbital Corrections Due To Cpt Violation, Leo Law
Orbital Corrections Due To Cpt Violation, Leo Law
Theses & ETDs
CPT stands for charge, parity, and time, and CPT-symmetry is the assumption that in a universe where CPT are all inverted at once with respect to our universe, the laws of physics remain the same. CPT-symmetry is respected by the Standard Model of particle physics, which most Physicists agree to be incomplete. In this thesis, the first order effects of a CPT-violating model on the orbit of a particle moving in the Schwarzschild metric gravitational field are calculated. The model introduces a uniform background vector field which couples with the helicity of the particle, and leads to a spin-dependent precession …
