A History Of Non-Western Bowed Instruments A Look Into The Eastern History Of The Modern-Day Violin, Sarah A. Bogen
A History Of Non-Western Bowed Instruments A Look Into The Eastern History Of The Modern-Day Violin, Sarah A. Bogen
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
No one can say for sure when and where the story of the violin began. By the end of the 1800s, the consensus was that it came into being between two important dates in history, the first voyage of Columbus in 1492 and the birth of Shakespeare in 1564. Many believe its creation was in Europe but that is not the case. In fact, its birth was in the East, and it migrated into Europe by way of the Silk Road. By exploring the Eastern World of Bowed Instruments, I aim to shine light on a topic not often discussed …

Patents And The Pharmaceutical Industry: Curbing The Abusive Practices Employed By Blockbuster Drug Companies To Prolong Market Exclusivity, Kelley Chandler
Patents And The Pharmaceutical Industry: Curbing The Abusive Practices Employed By Blockbuster Drug Companies To Prolong Market Exclusivity, Kelley Chandler
Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy
Patent law in the pharmaceutical space presents unique challenges. Interactions between patent terms, the FDA, the drug development process, and the need for quality medical solutions create a complex dynamic which leads to uncertainty. This uncertainty makes it difficult to discern between solutions which might be effective, and solutions which will spawn new challenges where they so intently sought to eliminate old ones. Although Hatch-Waxman was a success in many ways, in other ways it has proven to frustrate the purposes behind its enactment. The suggestions presented here are a sound starting point for alleviating some of the burden plaguing …

Communicative Disorders Faculty Publications
Around the world, institutions of higher education are recognising their responsibilities to achieve the full inclusion of individuals with differing needs and/or disabilities. The frameworks of universal design (UD) and universal design for learning (UDL) offer unique ways to build inclusiveness in our systems. The role of UD and UDL to strengthen successful inclusion of persons with differing needs in higher education programmes is presented from literature, inclusive of national and international policies and resources. Examples from South African and US institutions of higher learning are shared. Discussions of online accessibility, environmental issues, professional development, barriers to inclusion and recommendations …

Increasing evidence supports the beneficial effects of polyphenol-rich diets, including the traditional Mediterranean diet, for the management of cardiovascular disease, obesity and neurodegenerative diseases. However, a common concern when discussing the protective effects of polyphenol-rich diets against diseases is whether these compounds are present in systemic circulation in their intact/parent forms in order to exert their beneficial effects in vivo. Here, we explore two common classes of dietary polyphenols, namely isoflavones and lignans, and their gut microbial-derived metabolites for gut and blood–brain barrier predicted permeability, as well as protection against neuroinflammatory stimuli in murine BV-2 microglia. Polyphenol microbial metabolites (PMMs) …

The Art Of Caring: Increasing Empathy Through Conversation, Joy Harlynking
Honors Program Theses
In our every day lives we use empathy more than we would assume, however a current empathy deficit has led us to wonder how we can increase our empathy. The present study aimed to find a way to increase one’s empathy, specifically through an emotional conversation with another individual. There were 61 participants who were separated into either an emotional or factual conversation group. They first took surveys including the IRI, closeness questions, and the pre Revised Eyes Test and then engaged in conversation with another participant. They then took a post Revised Eyes Test after their conversation. The results …

Ecopedagogy: Learning How To Participate In Ecological Consciousness, Peterson, Eric
CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century
This paper is the result of an inquiry into ecological consciousness through a participatory paradigm. The dialectical relationship between institutionalized education and consciousness is central to this inquiry’s focus. This exploration into ecological consciousness has lead to the following question: How can institutionalized education be designed, delivered, and experienced in a way that nurtures ecological intelligence, ecological consciousness, and more importantly, ecological activism? The ‘sense of self ‘is a central theme within the paper, and led to the conception of intraearthal and interearthal relationships as a way of communicating our need to identify as being in Earth. The author utilizes …

Text As Afterthought: Jana Riess’S Treatment Of The Jacob-Sherem Episode, Duane Boyce
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The Neal A. Maxwell Institute recently published a book on the encounter between Jacob and Sherem in Jacob 7. Jana Riess’s contribution to this volume demonstrates the kind of question-asking and hypothesis formation that might occur on a quick first pass through the text, but it does not demonstrate what obviously must come next, the testing of those hypotheses against the text. Her article appears to treat the text as a mere afterthought. The result is a sizeable collection of errors in thinking about Jacob and Sherem.

Does In-Vitro Fertilization Increase The Risk For Birth Defects?, Tehila Tropper
Does In-Vitro Fertilization Increase The Risk For Birth Defects?, Tehila Tropper
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Since 1978 when the first “petri dish” baby was born, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has been used as a tool to give couples struggling with infertility the opportunity to have children. Using this method of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), the woman is given medication to stimulate her ovaries for the maturation of multiple eggs, which are then retrieved via needle aspiration, fertilized in a petri dish, and inserted in the uterus with the hopes of achieving a successful pregnancy. Many times IVF is completed with another technique known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where the sperm is injected straight into the …

Welcome To Trump's Ice Age: Violations Of Undocumented Immigrants' Fourth Amendment Rights During Workplace Raids, Gianni Piantini
St. Thomas Law Review
This Comment addresses the implications of ICE agents violating Fourth Amendment rights of undocumented immigrants who have been unreasonably seized during workplace raids. Part II discusses how the Fourth Amendment protections extend to the workplace, as well as the influence of ICE on immigration law and how the Fourth Amendment applies in the immigration context. Part IH addresses how Trump's antiimmigrant oratory has encouraged ICE to conduct workplace raids, which result in egregious violations of the Fourth Amendment. Part III further addresses the effect of the holding in Delgado on workplace raids and how ICE has conducted the raids in …
Developing Leadless Heart Rate Monitoring Technique In Elasmobranchs, Madison Weaver
Developing Leadless Heart Rate Monitoring Technique In Elasmobranchs, Madison Weaver
Theses & ETDs
The purpose of this study was to successfully obtain a reliable method of measuring the heart rate of elasmobranchs that is noninvasive and eliminates confounding factors common in present heart rate monitoring techniques. DST-centi HRT loggers have successfully recorded heart rate without the use of leads in bony fish, but elasmobranch trials have not been successful. Implanting high amplitude DST-centi HRT loggers, in combination with DSTcenti ACT loggers, into the abdominal cavity of a member of Chiloscyllium plagiosum, the whitespotted bamboo shark, allowed for a reliable heart rate measurement to be made in one subject (N = 4), yielding a …

And Your Little Dog Too: Witchcraft In The Cultural Imagination From The 17th To The 21st Century, Claire Craven
Theses & ETDs
Across centuries, the figure of the witch has been used to represent cultural fears and fantasies surrounding gender and power. This thesis examines the varying cultural narratives that have emerged around the archetype of the witch. Chapter One is a reading of three 17th-century English witchcraft plays, William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1606), John Ford, Thomas Dekker and William Rowley’s The Witch of Edmonton (1621), and Richard Brome and Thomas Heywood’s The Late Lancashire Witches (1634), exploring how witchcraft was portrayed in an era when it was widely believed to exist as a real phenomenon. Chapter Two explores historical fiction written about …
The Frankenstein Tradition: Intertextual Readings, Amanda Hash
The Frankenstein Tradition: Intertextual Readings, Amanda Hash
Theses & ETDs
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has served as a basis for modern science fiction and continues to inspire narratives even 200 years later. This thesis places Frankenstein within its intertextual tradition, analyzing its named sources as well as a modern adaptation in order to explore its continued resonance. The first chapter looks at how the novel uses Paradise Lost in order to discuss the role of God and dualities of good and evil, as well as the relationship between creator and creature. The second chapter explores how the 20th-century novel Poor Things uses Frankenstein in order to reflect on how adaptation creates …
An Evaluation Of Elasmobranch Abundance, Diversity, And Habitat Utilization In Manatee River, Florida, Mauryn Brownback
An Evaluation Of Elasmobranch Abundance, Diversity, And Habitat Utilization In Manatee River, Florida, Mauryn Brownback
Theses & ETDs
In this study longline and gillnet fish survey methods were used to survey elasmobranch diversity, abundance, and habitat utilization in the estuarine portion of the Manatee River, Florida. Collecting data on these species is important to conservation, regulation, and management of areas determined to be essential. Essential Fish Habitat is commonly used to define important areas for species, but it is often too broad to enforce effective conservation strategies. One way to determine more crucial habitat is to characterize an area as nursery habitat with three guidelines stated by Heupel et al. (2007). A total of six shark and three …
