The Other Of Jacques Lacan, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2019

The Other Of Jacques Lacan, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Language in the symbolic of Lacan is defined by the Other, which is the “intersubjectivity of the ‘we’ that it assumes,” as described in Écrits. The subject enters language in relationship to the other in perception, the per-ceived object or person, as recognized by the other. As described by Lacan, “What constitutes me as subject is my question. In order to be recognized by the other, I utter what was only in view of what will be [the future ante-rior of what I shall have been for what I am in the process of becoming].”

The Legislative Role In Procedural Rulemaking Through Incremental Reform, Briana L. Rosenbaum Jan 2019

The Legislative Role In Procedural Rulemaking Through Incremental Reform, Briana L. Rosenbaum

Scholarly Works

Public policy theory generally studies two types of institutional change: major changes at critical moments and incremental change. Using an institutional public policy theoretical lens, this Article explores congressional efforts to incrementally change the substantive law through procedural change and litigation reform. While much attention has been paid to the 115th Congress’s policy-based proposals, scant attention has been paid to the fact that Congress had, at the same time, proposed sweeping changes to court access. From trans-substantive measures affecting procedure in every civil case, to targeted measures changing the procedures in police misconduct cases and medical malpractice lawsuits, the legislature …

The Movement Of The Spirit: A Constructive Comparison Of Divine Grace In The Theologies Of Paul Tillich And John Wesley, Thomas Albert Barlow Jr Jan 2019

The Movement Of The Spirit: A Constructive Comparison Of Divine Grace In The Theologies Of Paul Tillich And John Wesley, Thomas Albert Barlow Jr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work is a constructive comparison of the ways in which the operations of divine grace resonate in the theologies of John Wesley and Paul Tillich. The primary questions which initially motivated this project: First, how does Tillich's concept of theonomy intersect Wesley's conceptions of the activity of grace? Second, how would those intersections serve to provide a renewed (or clarified) understanding of Wesley's framework of grace? How does Tillich's concept of theonomy, and his method of correlation, inform Wesley's understanding of the activity of grace in human culture? How might gleaned from this comparison inform the work of faith …

An Archaeological Investigation Into Social Organization And Political Reform In The Reserve Area Of New Mexico, A.D. 1000–1350, Cameron D. Benton Jan 2019

An Archaeological Investigation Into Social Organization And Political Reform In The Reserve Area Of New Mexico, A.D. 1000–1350, Cameron D. Benton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes archival data from archaeological sites with great kivas in the Reserve region of west-central New Mexico dating to A.D. 1000-1350 and examines sociopolitical organization and reform between the dynamic Reserve (A.D. 1000-1100) and Tularosa (1100-1350) Phases. Specifically, studies in this thesis compare great kiva architecture and ceramic types present between sites using methods of descriptive statistics and quantitative analysis, which allowed for interregional variation and change to be identified between those time periods. The results of those analyses are correlated with the archaeological histories of the Mimbres and Chaco societies that bordered the Reserve area in prehistory …

Analyzing Brain Sample Via Hplc Method, Neethu Mathew

BIO4950: Internship in Biology

This paper aims to investigate the principle methodology behind extraction and detection of an anti-cancer drug from brain samples via the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. In order to assess the efficiency of the methodology carried out in the Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute of Cancer Research (RGI), numerous peer-reviewed journals and articles were analyzed over the duration of this internship. They were filtered on the basis of inclusion of keywords, date written, peer-reviewed credibility, and similarity to RGI’s research. The literature that has been chosen to be reviewed includes studies that present similar methodologies or test drugs with similar functions. From …

Why Is Meat So Cheap, Lewis Bollard Jan 2019

Why Is Meat So Cheap, Lewis Bollard

Diet

Investment banks and consultancies are making bold predictions for meat alternatives’ success: by 2030, UBS thinks meat alternatives will be a $85B global market; Barclays thinks they’ll be worth $140B; and AT Kearney thinks they’ll be worth $390B. Think tank RethinkX even predicts that, by 2030, meat alternatives’ success will have rendered the beef industry “all but bankrupt.” There is reason for optimism. The Beyond Burger is now sold in over 53,000 outlets, including a trial at 28 McDonald’s restaurants in Canada. The Impossible Burger just launched in retail, and outsold all ground beef in its first two weeks on …

Idiot Science For A Blue Humanities: Shakespeare's The Comedy Of Errors And Deleuze's Mad Cogito, Steven Swarbrick Jan 2019

Idiot Science For A Blue Humanities: Shakespeare's The Comedy Of Errors And Deleuze's Mad Cogito, Steven Swarbrick

Publications and Research

Can we imagine a Blue Humanities that takes the non-relation as a starting point for ecological thought? I believe we can. Following Shakespeare and Deleuze, this essay engages in a thought experiment that, if it is not too absurd, might, like the ship of fools of medieval times, unmoor the Blue Humanities from its current safe harbor by putting the thought of ‘our’ world under erasure. This is not a matter of turning thought around, such that, by turning to the sea, we turn thought away from calculation and instrumental reason and rediscover our true nature. Rather, the image of …

There Must Be A Reason People Come Here, Brian James Foley Jan 2019

There Must Be A Reason People Come Here, Brian James Foley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The poems in this collection are meant to be read as a preparation of ground and ask to be connected to a larger thought beyond the discrete experience of the poem itself. That thought is that no artistic expression exists outside of the historical conditions in which it was made, and those conditions must be broadcast in concert with the poem.

I cite that these poems are the result of existential degradation developed during the production of subjectivity under modern, hegemonic structures of Neoliberal Capitalism. They were cultivated from "bits of sensitivity" drawn from an unexceptional past regulated by systems …

Transgenerational Effects Of Maternal Age On Offspring Fitness In Crickets, Jacob D. Wilson Jan 2019

Transgenerational Effects Of Maternal Age On Offspring Fitness In Crickets, Jacob D. Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Advanced parental age is an important aspect of parental condition that can have both positive and negative effects on offspring fitness, and thus, parental age can be considered a parental effect. As a parental effect, parental age may affect a variety of offspring traits and may cascade to influence several generations of offspring. Given the complexities of studying both paternal and maternal age, we studied the effects of maternal age only. Using the Pacific field cricket, Teleogryllus oceanicus, we asked 1) does maternal age have influences over several generations of offspring and 2) does maternal age influence the reproductive …

Rapid-Scan Epr And Imaging, Yilin Shi Jan 2019

Rapid-Scan Epr And Imaging, Yilin Shi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

EPR imaging at low frequency is a powerful tool to obtain important biological information in vivo in a non-invasive way. Properties of nitroxide and trityl radical imaging reagents have been studied. Developments in rapid scan imaging techniques are reported that improve efficiency of experiments and user-friendliness of software.

Relaxation and signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) in pulse experiments on trityl radicals were measured at frequencies between 400 MHz and 1.5 GHz. Relaxation time increases as the frequency increases and the radical concentration decreases. Since relaxation time is a sensitive and accurate measure of oxygen pressure, this study provides criteria for the selection …

Cognitive Rigidity In Patients With Anorexia Nervosa, Miriam Sheynblyum Jan 2019

Cognitive Rigidity In Patients With Anorexia Nervosa, Miriam Sheynblyum

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by significantly low body weight and over-evaluation of weight and shape in self-identity. The complex etiology of Anorexia Nervosa renders many current treatments ineffective, thereby prolonging the course of the illness. Among the many psychological and behavioral features of AN, cognitive features like obsessiveness, rigidity, and perfectionism are often described. Patients hold firm beliefs about an ideal body weight and find it difficult to alter their thinking patterns. Recent studies have identified a pathway to understanding this disorder through characterization of it’s cognitive features. With this research, advances have been made in …

Predicting Human Interpretations Of Affect And Valence In A Social Robot, David Mcneill, Casey Kennington Jan 2019

Predicting Human Interpretations Of Affect And Valence In A Social Robot, David Mcneill, Casey Kennington

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we seek to understand how people interpret a social robot’s performance of an emotion, what we term ‘affective display,’ and the positive or negative valence of that affect. To this end, we tasked annotators with observing the Anki Cozmo robot perform its over 900 pre-scripted behaviors and labeling those behaviors with 16 possible affective display labels (e.g., interest, boredom, disgust, etc.). In our first experiment, we trained a neural network to predict annotated labels given multimodal information about the robot’s movement, face, and audio. The results suggest that pairing affects to predict the valence between them is …

Language Policy And Practice In Almost-Bilingual Classrooms, Elaine Allard, S. Apt, Isabel M. Sacks , '15 Jan 2019

Language Policy And Practice In Almost-Bilingual Classrooms, Elaine Allard, S. Apt, Isabel M. Sacks , '15

Educational Studies Faculty Works

This study explores language policies in “almost-bilingual” classrooms, in which most but not all students share a home language. Teachers who are bilingual face a dilemma in these settings. Should they draw on shared linguistic expertise to benefit the majority while excluding a few, or should they forego significant benefits for most in the interest of equity? This qualitative study examines the classroom language policies and practices of one English-as-a second-language (ESL) teacher at a majority-Latino high school. Drawing on field notes, interviews, and systematic teacher reflection, the authors identify a collection of multilingual practices across ESL and sheltered content …

Biological Variation, Imsa Fusion

An Epidemiological Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity

Objectives:

  • Identify different phenotypes of corn (maize) kernels.
  • Use ratios and sampling to determine which of two different ears of corn is most likely to have produced a given sample of kernels.
  • Use Punnett Squares to determine the genotypes of the “parents” that produced the different kernel samples.
  • Compare and contrast traditional selective breeding techniques with genetically engineering a desired trait in corn.
  • Model the regulation of gene expression in a hypothetical cell.
  • Discuss the potential role that epigentic variation may play in improving corn crops of the future.

Bioaccumulation Of Heavy Metals In Mesozooplankton From A Human-Impacted South Western Atlantic Estuary (Argentina), Diana M. Villagran, Melisa D. Fernández Severini, Florencia Biancalana, Carla V. Spetter, Eleonora M. Fernández, Jorge E. Macrovecchio

Journal of Marine Research

The total metal concentrations (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, Ni, Cr, and Fe) in the mesozooplankton (200 μm–2 mm) were studied for a year in a human-impacted estuary strongly affected by urban and industrial discharges located in the South Atlantic. Over the last 25 years, this estuary has been the site of significant anthropogenic impacts including industrial activities, maritime traffic, and regular dredging. A quantitative and qualitative analysis was also carried out to identify the mesozooplanktonic community that was sampled for metal determinations. The mesozooplankton had high concentrations of toxic metals such as Cd, Pb, Cr, and Ni, which may …
