Protected Areas In Tanzania: The Coevolution Of Conservation, Communities, And Conflict, Rachael Vannatta Jan 2019

Protected Areas In Tanzania: The Coevolution Of Conservation, Communities, And Conflict, Rachael Vannatta

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The consequences of human activities through territorial occupation, resource extraction, and waste deposition, all characteristics of the Anthropocene, have severely impacted biodiversity. In some countries, passing and enforcing environmental legislation to protect the environment has proven to be a major challenge. Various types of terrestrial protected areas have been established to safeguard, manage, and utilize the biodiversity of non-human species and anthropocentrically-defined natural resources, cover approximately 14.7% of the earth’s surface, according to the World Bank (n.d) and IUCN (2008). With 38% of its land dedicated to protected areas, Tanzania exceeds the global average, but not without controversy. Critics of …

Dr. Robert Ford confides to Dolores that his father would not agree with his creation of robots for the enjoyment of humans. "My father told me to be satisfied with my lot in life. That the world owed me nothing. And so, I make my own world" ("Contrapasso"). This tells us at once that Dr. Ford's father had a Platonic notion of justice.

Memories, Eva Becsei-Kilborn

Swiss American Historical Society Review

It was in the early 1990's that I first met Bob. He was teaching, first as a Soros Foundation Fellow and then as a Fullbright Professor at the Lajos Kossuth University in Debrecen, a city in eastern Hungary. It was only a couple of years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communism. This was a time when it had finally become possible for Hungarians to travel freely in the world, but in practice very few of us were able to afford to do so.

Ecosystem Functional Consequences Of Top Predator Mortality Due To The Invasive Shrub, Lonicera Maackii, Josey Lee-Anne Berta Jan 2019

Ecosystem Functional Consequences Of Top Predator Mortality Due To The Invasive Shrub, Lonicera Maackii, Josey Lee-Anne Berta

Online Theses and Dissertations

Lonicera maackii (Amur Honeysuckle) is an invasive woody plant species that is present across the United States. Previous studies have assessed the biotic effects of honeysuckle, as well as abiotic effects such as changes in soil chemistry, ground level light, and forest floor temperature. Although directs effects of L. maackii on native terrestrial plant communities are well studied, little is known about its indirect effects, especially in aquatic ecosystems. Based on limited prior studies, I predicted addition of L. maackii leaves to aquatic systems would increase mortality of a top amphibian predator due to the release of phenolic compounds that …

A Systematic Review Of Genetic Influence On Psychological Resilience, Kosuke Niitsu, Michael J. Rice, Julia F. Houfek, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Kevin A. Kupzyk, Cecilia R. Barron Jan 2019

A Systematic Review Of Genetic Influence On Psychological Resilience, Kosuke Niitsu, Michael J. Rice, Julia F. Houfek, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Kevin A. Kupzyk, Cecilia R. Barron

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

When exposed to adversity, some individuals are at an increased risk of posttraumatic stress disorder, experiencing persistent biopsychosocial disturbances, whereas others adapt well, described as resilience. Resilience is a complex biopsychosocial phenomenon conceptualized as adaptation to adversity influenced by an individual’s genetic variants, epistasis, epigenetics, and gene-by-environment interactions. Studies on psychological resilience have focused on behavioral and psychosocial variables with far less examination of the genetic contributions. The purpose of this review is to identify specific genetic variants contributing to the biological capacity for psychological resilience. PubMed and PsycINFO were searched using the following key words: psychological resilience AND genotype …

Magic, Greek, Radcliffe G. Edmonds Iii Jan 2019

Magic, Greek, Radcliffe G. Edmonds Iii

Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship

Greek magic is the discourse of magic within the ancient Greek world. Greek magic includes a range of practices, from malevolent curses to benevolent protections, from divinatory practices to alchemical procedures, but what is labelled magic depends on who is doing the labelling and the circumstances in which the label is applied. The discourse of magic pertains to non-normative ritualized activity, in which the deviation from the norm is most often marked in terms of the perceived efficacy of the act, the familiarity of the performance within the cultural tradition, the ends for which the act is performed, or the …

Pairing A Robot To A Virtual Entity To Provide Haptic Feedback In Virtual Reality, Tristan G. Fogt Jan 2019

Pairing A Robot To A Virtual Entity To Provide Haptic Feedback In Virtual Reality, Tristan G. Fogt

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Virtual reality (VR) environments are most commonly used for entertainment and gaming, though are also employed in rehabilitative and professional contexts. Virtual reality systems currently have highly convincing visual and aural feedback, allowing for a superficially immersive experience for the user. However, these systems lack haptic feedback, breaking the immersive experience as soon as the user tries to interact with a virtual object or entity physically, which severely limits the uses of VR.

To solve this, instead of the conventional approach of trying to simulate feeling something that isn’t actually there, a physical robot was created to exist in real …

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2019

Small-scale agriculture is the primary source of food for the majority of the developing world. It is a vital component of the total global land usage for agricultural production, and sustaining and improving subsistence farms is critical for meeting global food demand as well as maintaining the integrity of agro-ecological systems. Due to the important role that smallholder farmers play in global agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN developed the Smallholder Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agricultural Systems App (SAFA), a 100-question survey tool created for simplicity and wide-reaching applicability. SAFA is flexible in nature in that …

Race And Sport In The Florida Sun: The Rollins/Ohio Wesleyan Football Game Of 1947, Wenxian Zhang, Raja Rahim, Julian Chambliss

Faculty Publications

As the most popular sport in the United States, football occupies a central place in popular discourse. Since the early twentieth century, public engagement with football has been central to sport culture. Across the South, football provided a moment of common experience, and this was especially true of Rollins College. Being the oldest liberal arts institution in Florida, life at Rollins was linked to football for decades. Yet, as this comment suggested, the nature of the relationship could not be unaffected by the changing racial dynamic in the United States. As a small liberal arts college, the faculty and students …

Ovalbumin-Sensitized Mice Have Altered Airway Inflammation To Agriculture Organic Dust, Kristi J. Warren, John D. Dickinson, Amy J. Nelson, Todd A. Wyatt, Debra J. Romberger, Jill A. Poole

Journal Articles: Environmental, Agricultural & Occupational Health

Agriculture exposures are associated with reducing the risk of allergy and asthma in early life; yet, repeated exposures later in life are associated with chronic bronchitis and obstructive pulmonary diseases. The objective of this study was to investigate the airway inflammatory response to organic dust extract (ODE) in mice with established ovalbumin (OVA)-induced experimental asthma. C57BL/6 mice were either OVA sensitized/aerosol-exposed or saline (Sal) sensitized/aerosol-challenged. Both groups were then subsequently challenged once with intranasal saline or swine confinement ODE to obtain 4 treatment groups of Sal-Sal, Sal-ODE, OVA-Sal, and OVA-ODE. Airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR) to methacholine, bronchiolar lavage fluid, lung tissues, …

Assessing The Role Of Polyphenols As A Vascular Protectant Against Drug Induced Vascular Injury, Anson Jacob Oommen Jan 2019

Assessing The Role Of Polyphenols As A Vascular Protectant Against Drug Induced Vascular Injury, Anson Jacob Oommen

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Vascular injury is identified during pre-clinical toxicity testing within certain pharmacological classes of drug candidates and induces degenerative and hyperplastic changes in endothelial (ECs) and vascular smooth muscle (VSMCs) cells. This drug-induced vascular injury has been show as a side-effect caused by various classes of drugs, including, antibacterial (e.g., azithromycin), anti-malarial (e.g., quinoline), anti-viral (e.g., anti-hepatitis C virus interferons) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen), and affects normal cardiovascular function and can further lead to various cardiovascular conditions like arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, high blood pressure, and even heart attack. The search for agents capable of reducing vascular injury side-effects by …

Performance Of Amaranth Accessions Against Moisture Stress And Key Insect Pests And Their Indigenous Parasitoids In Arusha, Tanzania, Stephen Tarmogin Omburo Othim Jan 2019

Performance Of Amaranth Accessions Against Moisture Stress And Key Insect Pests And Their Indigenous Parasitoids In Arusha, Tanzania, Stephen Tarmogin Omburo Othim

All PhD Dissertations

Amaranths are African indigenous vegetables (AIVs) that have recently gained importance as a food source in Africa owing to the high nutritional value of their leaves and grains. Production of this crop is, however, limited by arthropod pests especially the lepidopteran leaf-webbers, leaf-worms and stem weevils. The use of insecticides for their management is uneconomical and also present health and environmental concerns. Host plant resistance (HPR) to insects is an effective, economical and environmentally friendly alternative that is poorly understood and unexploited among AIVs. The aim of this study was to assess Amaranthus accessions for resistance to leaf-webbers and stem …

Potential Effects Of Climate Change On Tritrophic Interactions In Crucifer Farming Systems Of Mount Kilimanjaro And Taita Hills, Benignus Valentine Ngowi

All PhD Dissertations

Diamondback moth (DBM) (Plutella xylostella L.), a pest of cruciferous vegetables worldwide, is resistant to major groups of insecticides, and attention has shifted to biological control using parasitoids. However, DBM and its parasitoid species have individual climatic requirements which, when not met adequately due to climate change, will potentially disrupt biological control of the pest. The response of this pest and its parasitoids to climate change at a local scale is less documented than in international scale and is largely ignored in a region where climate patterns have been changing in a way that is likely to interfere with the …

Mechanisms Of Resistance And Tolerance In African And European Honeybees Apis Mellifera L., Against Varroa Destructo, Beatrice Tchuidjang Nganso Jan 2019

Mechanisms Of Resistance And Tolerance In African And European Honeybees Apis Mellifera L., Against Varroa Destructo, Beatrice Tchuidjang Nganso

All PhD Dissertations

The honeybee, Apis mellifera L., is indispensable to global food security, poverty alleviation and natural biodiversity conservation. However, the ecto-parasitic mite Varroa destructor and its associated pathogens are one of the most serious threats to the health of honeybees, especially both wild and managed European honeybees found in Europe and North America. In contrast to European honeybees, their African counterparts appear to be minimally affected by these stressors. However, the underlying mechanisms that contribute to their survival against the mites remain mostly unknown. To test the hypothesis that resistant defence behavioural mechanisms are responsible for the survival of A. m. …

Endophytic Activity Of Beauveria Bassiana In Tomato And Its Efficacy Against Red Spider Mites (Tetranychus Evansi, Caroline Anaye Omukoko

All PhD Dissertations

The tomato red spider mite, Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard, is an important pest of tomatoes in Kenya. Acaricides commonly used in excessive amounts by farmers have led to cases of resistance as well as widespread residues in the food chain and the larger environment. There is need to seek alternative control measures such as the use of endophytes. In this study, laboratory and greenhouse experiments were carried out to screen for Beauveria bassiana isolates that could establish as endophytes in tomato varieties and control red spider mites. Five Beauveria bassiana isolates (ICIPE 10, ICIPE 35, ICIPE 273, ICIPE 279 …

The Effect Of Predator Kairomones On Caudal Regeneration By Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamanders (Desmognathus Ochrophaeus), Wesley I. Payette, Aaron M. Sullivan

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Many prey use autotomy as an antipredator mechanism. Rapid regeneration of autotomized appendages is beneficial because forfeited tissues may serve as organs for energy storage, accessories for locomotion, or indicators of social status. We monitored levels of caudal regeneration by Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamanders (Desmognathus ochrophaeus Cope, 1859) exposed to kairomones from predatory Eastern Garter Snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis (Linnaeus, 1758)). After the induction of autotomy, salamanders were exposed to one of three treatment regimens: blank (water), or acute (30 min per week) or chronic (constant) exposure to predator kairomones during a 12-week study period. Overall, the mean volume …
