Andrei Bolotov (1738–1833) was one of the most prolific writers of the 18th and early 19th centuries, although much of his heritage remained unpublished. In the subsequent critical and scholarly literature the assessments of his works vary from enthusiastic to derogatory. But the reputation of a graphomaniac, one that stuck with Bolotov, is largely due to the difference in the perception of a literary work in the 18th and the subsequent centuries. The penchant for writing poetry became a prominent discussion topic among Russian poets at the very beginning of the 18^th century. While poets would usually exonerate themselves of their own “wretched inclination” to versify profusely, they would ridicule and judge similar proclivities shown by fellow poets: as Feofan Prokopovich put it, Omnes ad nauseam versificari occeperant (“everyone was composing verses in the most annoying way”). This kind of criticism was not unfounded: prolific writing led to a deterioration in style, loss of literary craft, dilettantism, and an overall decline in the prestige of the profession. The paper examines the mention of Giuseppe Bonechi made by Alexander Sumarokov in his letter to count Shuvalov dated the 12^th March 1761 in the context of the quarrel with count Sievers and of Sumarokov’s dismissal from theatre and from service. The expression “the despicable rank of a theatrical versifier” is interpreted in the light of Bonechi’s social position as a subordinate in the court’s Italian troupe, while Sumarokov aspires to a leading position in the Russian company. The article is devoted to Anton Chekhov’s creative connection with Yelena Shavrova, for whom he edited her works and helped her have them published. Shavrova followed Chekhov’s advice: she shortened descriptions and removed fragments calculated for effect. The young writer indeed absorbed Chekhov’s artistic principles: narrating “in the spirit and tone of the character”, relinquishing external eventfulness for the sake of focusing on the characters’ psychological states, open endings. Like her mentor, Shavrova was also interested in gender issues. After Chekhov’s death, Shavrova gave up literary activities.

Konstantin Leontiev presented his religious views in a programmatic opposition to the so-called pink Christianity, found in the works and statements of Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Lev Tolstoy. Due to the central position of both his adversaries in the Russian literary, intellectual and cultural tradition, Leontiev’s dispute with them can be regarded as a polemic of a writer with a broadly understood communal tradition – not only with the Russian one, because in Dostoyevsky’s and Tolstoy’s thought Leontiev recognised symptomatic manifestations of much more general religious, cultural and social tendencies of his time. The author of the article focuses attention on the “Upright Confession” (1774), written by the Russian Empress Catherine II in the form of a letter to her new favourite Grigory Potemkin. Catherine speaks to her lover openly about her liaisons with other men. She tries to explain her amorousness in terms of “natural” properties of her “nature”, an Enlightenment concept current at the time. While in fact admitting to adultery, the Empress never mentions sin as such. There is no remorse, no repentance in Catherine’s “Upright Confession”. What is foregrounded is the frankness of the account, slightly coloured by irony. …

The article considers the translation of two poems by Igor Severyanin into Polish. In the first case a translational analysis of the source and the target text is offered. The second case is an example of a pre-translation analysis followed by an attempt to make a translation. What is taken into account is the issue of the old combining with the new, the innovative with the traditional in the works of the poet (on the level of vocabulary, imagery and form) and the task of reproducing this fusion in translation. The article presents the results of a study on the role of non-verbal communication (gestures and facial expressions) in the poetry of Sergei Yesenin, as well as on the methods of translating thereof into Polish. The article brings an analysis of Dmitry Glukhovsky’s science-fiction writing from the perspective of realistic motifs and the writer’s striving for realism. In his novels and short stories the writer touches upon real problems of the contemporary Russian society: helplessness of an ordinary man in the face of the system, corruption, censorship, falsified election results, iniquity, impunity. Glukhovsky brings up such issues in his Tales about the Motherland and his novels Futu.re, Metro 2035, thus reaching beyond science-fiction. The same problems become the focus of his attention in his latest, realistic novel Text.

The aim of the present article is to analyse the phenomenon of graphomania on the Internet, with Marina Maslova’s 2004 novel Don Juan as an example. The paper is an attempt at describing similarities and differences between Evgeny Vodolazkin’s novel Laurus (Lavr) and the Old Russian literature, in particular such genres of the latter as the lives of saints, religious travel writing, chronicle and paleia. The analogy with ancient Greek novel is also mentioned. The author of the paper on the one hand stresses that due to its syncretic character, the novel Laurus absorbs selected elements of the above-mentioned texts of the past, and on the other hand analyses Vodolazkin’s innovative treatment of time. The article deals with the absorption of another writer’s poetics in Andrei Dragunov’s poetry. In Dragunov’s Monologica elements of Joseph Brodsky’s poetical method manifest themselves on various textual levels (rhythm, syntax, vocabulary, motifs, topoi). While the author may not consider it a form of borrowing, the reader is well aware of the other poet’s rhythmical, stylistic and ideological influence here. The younger poet seems to have directly appropriated the “alien discourse”, and another’s voice is not presupposed “in the imitator’s plan” (Mikhail Bakhtin, based on C. Emerson’s translation – Ed.). Olga Martynova writes in two languages: poetry in Russian and prose in German. Writing poetry, as Martynova states, requires very quick thinking, which is only possible for her in the Russian language. In spite of this limitation, she translates her Russian verses into German – in collaboration with Elke Erb. To consider an example, in “Verse von Rom (3)”, the Russian rhymes “инеем – именем – выменем” are rendered on the one hand literally, as “Raureif – Name – Euter”, and on the other as ‘visual rhymes’: “Namen – Kolonnaden – oben”. Included here are geochemical concentrations (ppm) of ceramic artifacts and clay samples from the archaeological site of Angamuco, Mexico. Additional data include maps and photographs of the ceramic samples. Concentrations were measured via Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis and are available here asAppendix B. These data complement the discussions and interpretations in “Geochemical Analysis and Spatial Trends of Ceramics and Clay from Angamuco, Michoacán”[1].

The motivation for this paper was to design a current feedback-based high load current, low drop-out (LDO) voltage regulator. A bandgap voltage reference (BGR) was also designed in conjunction with the LDO to simulate realistic environments. The schematic was designed with Cadence Virtuoso Schematic XL, using the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) 65-nm CMOS library, used for Internet of Things (IoT) System on Chip (SoC) applications. The proposed capacitor-less LDO with BGR provided an average temperature coefficient (TC) of 13.34 ppm/℃ within the range of -40 to 125 ℃. Seafloor maps are often used in species distribution modeling (SDM), where maps are paired with fish observations to create models predicting habitat suitability, species density, or species biomass. Problems with the current use of SDM include limited understanding of species relationships with benthic morphology, lack of practical model testing, and deficiency of information on the effects of map resolution on population estimates. A drop camera was used to gather observations of fishes along Central California and paired with remotely sensed bathymetry to create predictive models and maps of species density and biomass. Smartphones have become an essential part of modern life, offering access to entertainment, information, and social connections from anywhere, at any time. However, research has associated interactions with these devices with maladaptive behaviors and cognitive impairments. Furthermore, recent research has suggested that the mere presence of a smartphone can deplete cognitive resources. We sought to test the hypothesis that the perceptual salience of smartphones would negatively impact perceptual processes. Using frameworks from critical race theory, social movement theory, and community-based activism, this thesis explores the phenomena of white fragility, white guilt, and colorblind racial ideology and how they impact the ways predominantly white-identified social and environmental justice organizations approach, build, and maintain solidarity with communities of color in Santa Cruz County, California. A qualitative approach was employed to investigate the experiences of white-identified activists and how they attempt to engage in this constantly challenging process. I argue that the shift into modernity is responsible for the loss of women’s autonomy as well as the anxiety experienced by men regarding their power as well as their potential.
